This topic is an archive of material orginally posted on the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum, hosted on WorldCrossing, which ceased operations on April 15, 2011

The following are tributes to timrew (Scrambledeggs), one of the original Forum members, who passed away in 2009.  In the photo below, timrew is on the left, posing with his son (see post #38).

I received the following two emails:

From: Matt Kik <mattyk@btopenworld.com>
Date: 1/23/2009 3:36:23 am
To: kipc@iglide.net
Subject: My Father, Tim Kik

Hi Kip

You don't know me but my name is Matthew Kik and I am the son of Tim Kik who was a regular contributor some years ago to the forums on the Harry Potter Lexicon website. I don't know if you will remember him at all (he started out on there using the name Scrambledeggs) but I noticed from his e-mail account that he corresponded with you several times about the forum.

I was e-mailing to tell you that sadly my father died last Friday at the age of 59. I know it's been a while since he wrote anything on the forums as he'd stopped using the internet but I was wondering if you would mind posting some sort of notice. I know he really enjoyed writing on the forums because he was always passing on snippets of news he read there, regaled me with stories about how he'd occasionally wind up the younger members and I think there was even the odd controversy when he actually ended up accidentally offending someone, for which he later apologised (I think this was the gist of one of the e-mails I saw that he'd written to you).

I know he was also very fond of a lot of the members and overwhelmed at the response he got when he informed people that his father had died, back in 2004. At the time he asked me to copy all the notices posted from the forums and print them out so my Nana could see how far the tributes that poured in stretched around the world.

An additional request, I don't know if you or any of the existing members knew Dad well enough for this but I'm asking everyone and a community of literary enthusiasts should certainly not be left out. Just as my father wrote a story of his fat her's life for people at the funeral, I am trying to do the same. However, I don't think I could do it justice and I don't know half the stories people could tell about him. I'm asking anyone who knew him, if they would like to, to write down a story or a memory they have of my Dad so I can compile them into a tribute. I know this is a lot to ask so please don't feel obligated to do this, I just thought if anyone could think of anything they could write it would be nice.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer, it is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Matt Kik

Kip

You don't know me but may have heard of my existance through my brother, Tim, also known as Timrew on your site.

It is with great sadness that I tell you that he passed away last Friday at the age of 59. I know he loved your site although I am not sure how often recently he had been on - he had moved home and wasn't in the best of health. When my father passed in 2004, there were many kind messages from your forum, from people who never knew my father but shared a bond with my brother.

Tim was a talented writer and poet and quiet, gentle reserved man who will be sorely missed by all who had the fortune of knowing him.

Please can you thank everyone who sent these messages on behalf of my family and also for making my brother such a welcome member of your site.

God bless, Christel

Many of you may not have known Tim, but he was one of the original members of our Forums. I have a lot to say; however I have a huge amount of research to accomplish first. Please check back for updates. Information following as I can produce it!

You are invited to email your recollections and/or post your thoughts on this thread.

Matt,

I am so sorry to here of the loss of your father. I knew him as Scrambledeggs and Timew. I always enjoyed his quirky sense of humor. And his humorous perspective.

On the offense side, I once said something off the cuff, to which he took exception (it was a location remark, not mean), however, he simply replied in good humor. It is wonderful to come here and chat with people from all over the world to see what makes us all the same. Your father was particularly good at making us all comfortable together.

Dear Matt,

Yep I knew your dad. He was the funniest guy on the forum. I would post something just to get a rise out of him, but alas he saw through me and just responded in that insane humor and wit he so possessed. Trading barbs with him was a part of my day that made the waiting for another book passable. He didn't have a missed word for anyone, and always was around at the right time when one of his fellow forumers needed a lift.

I will never forget the guy in a rowboat holding a dumb fish grinning back at me, or the man playing rock and roll.

My prayers are with your family during your time of grief. May God bless you all.

Wow. I remember him as timrew when he had recently changed to that name. Some people were still calling him scrambledggs to make the connection. Very easily he was the funniest one on the boards. I could not take offense to his posts because I knew his humor and great wit. Sometimes discussions got intense and he would come in with something silly that would put me (and everyone else) in stitches. If we had to vote, I would say he had given rise to the most SPEW moments. I also got the sense from his posts that he was a very genuine, kind, and likeable guy - definitely one of my HP Lex favorites!

Not long ago, I began wondering where he'd gone to lately and missed his funny posts. And then, oddly, someone else mentioned him on the chat thread - though this is not the answer we wanted to hear - but I know where he is and is making everyone laugh until their cheeks hurt. I'm so glad I was on these threads early enough to have known him. My daughter remembers him with fondness, too. I can't say how many times we sat and laughed hard over and over again at his posts.

One of his prediction posts:
Voldemort is dragged into watching, ITV's "Play 2006" on ITV 7000.

He ends up at the final of the Poker Championships, 2006, where he loses to Snape in the final.

He is so teed off with this, he descends into gloom, finally killing himself in the last chapter of the book, where he dicovers there is no afterlife (for him, anyway!)..........

He will be missed.

I remember Timrew too, I'm saddened by this news! My condolences.
Like most forum members when I think of Tim the words kind and funny come to mind.
Of course the fishing picture stands out (wasn't he also wearing this typical fisherman's hat?) and I think Timrew was also there when Sigrid started dreaming of renting a big castle in Scotland for a forum get together for book 7. (It remained a dream, unfortunately).

For the forum: Now I wish the search function worked, we could have found some funny quotes. but I went looking in the archive folders (that's a trip down memory lane, specially now that everyone has their avatars back) And the oldest one Hem Hem, "-- Chat and Greeting Thread (25 Sep 03 to 26 Feb 04)" #1, 25 Sep 2003 7:42 pm September 2003, starts just after Tims birthday, he has that rockband picture next to his posts.

One Tim quote about Guy Fawkes bonfires:
"A tip on keeping warm at bonfires.....you have to imagine you're on a spit and keep rotating where you stand. That way, you keep warm all over.

Granted, you look stupid, and the person you're talking to only gets to hear what you're saying every ten seconds or so; but at least you're warm!"

Matt and Cristel,

I am so sorry to hear about Tim's passing. My deepest sympathies to you and the rest of the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

What a wonderful guy Tim was! I knew him from the beginning on the other server we had, where he was "scrambledeggs" and then he became "timrew," but whatever name he used, he was the funniest person on the Forum! Tim's posts were witty, insightful, and always lightened the mood and brightened the day of anyone who read them. It was such a privilege to share our common journey of experiencing the Harry Potter books with him.

I remember that one of his avatars showed him standing before some beautifully colored tapestries or fabrics, and when he was asked about it, he told us he worked with textiles, and I remembered thinking at the time "How wonderful to work in such beauty all the time -- no wonder he's always in a good mood!" The part of his life that he shared with us made it clear that he enjoyed his days on this Earth -- fishing (I remember another Forumer joking with him about the fish from the avatar on the boat "Was there a fish? It was so small I couldn't see it!" LOL!), playing music, reading, and writing. What a blessing.

We have missed timrew lately here on the Forum; in fact, I recently thought of him and came *thisclose* to posting his name just the other day (the 26th) when someone here taught us Americans a new Manchester-word ("nesh.") I filed it away in my memory banks right next to my very favorite new word of all time, which was taught to me by none other than timrew. We were discussing the Harry Potter character Madam Marsh and her... er... upset stomach while riding the Knight Bus, and timrew said she must've been "rat-legged." I almost fell off my chair laughing. Such a great word, and I could just hear it coming out of timrew's mouth! For the rest of my days I will cherish that.

I had always held out hope that someday my family and I would be able to visit Great Britain and have a get-together with all our Forum friends on that side of the pond. It was all in the plan to sit around at a pub and listen to timrew's band and actually hear his voice saying "rat-legged." I am saddened by the fact that we will not be able to share this now. Although we feel like we have lost one of our "family members" here, it is so wonderful to know that he had such obviously caring "real-life" family members like yourselves. Thank you so much for remembering us and sharing your news with us. We will remember him fondly and miss him greatly.

I remember Tim as both scrambledeggs and timrew. How can anyone who spent any time here not know Tim and his incredible humor?

Tim was moderated on more than one occasion but it was not because he was a troublemaker, it was he expected everyone to "get" him and sometimes people didn't. He would cheerfully correct a problem and go forth once more.

Tim and I had a scuffle once over something that was posted, emails went back and forth and as a result, a few unkind words were said between us. Tim decided to leave the Forum for a time even though it was not necessary. He was told that he would always be welcome and would be missed more than he realized. I was very glad to get an email a short time later, from Tim, seeking permission to return.

I told him again that no permission was needed, he was welcome back and had been missed. It just shows the kind of all around good guy he was that he wanted to be sure that things were okay between us (They were! Always had been)

We got to see pictures of Tim fishing, Tim with his son, Tim with his bands and so we got to know Tim and make him part of our Lexicon Forum family. I hope he knew how much he was a valued member of the family here.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading what Tim had to say and how much I enjoyed his sense of humor.

Tim was one of a kind and I am so very sorry for your loss.

Timrew (Scrambledeggs) was one of the first people that stuck with me in reading posts. When I first came to the Forum and was skimming post to get the gist of a thread, I always thoroughly read Tim's post. They were always so funny. Like Maria said, he was probably responsible for the most "spew" posts.

Tim will be greatly missed.

I am very sad to learn of our loss. I knew timrew only through his posts here in the last few years, but anytime his name appeared you could be sure that the post would be succinct, pithy and LOL funny. I second the assertion that timrew was undoubtedly responsible for more SPEW-worthy posts than any other forum member. I can't count the times folks had to post about literally cleaning soda or coffee off their computer screens due to a timrew comment. The joy and humor he shared with us will always be a fond memory, and the good feelings we gained in the moment....who can measure that? Please share our heartfelt condolences with your family and friends.

I'm not sure if we can use this thread for this but this is a great Timrew quote from movie character thread in 2002:

I heard that Stephen Spielberg offered to Direct the first Harry Potter movie, but was turned down by JK Rowling because he wanted to condense all four books into one film and set it in America. Can you imagine it? This got me wondering who he would cast. No doubt Haley Joel Osment would have been Harry Potter. Dumbledore would be played by Jack Nicholson, Professor McGonagall – Julia Roberts, Professor Snape – Sylvester Stallone, Hagrid – Arnold Schwartzenegger, Peeves – Eddie Murphy, Sirius Black – Vin Diesel, Remus Lupin – Jean Claude Van Damme, Professor Flitwick – Danny De Vito, Gilderoy Lockhart – Tom Cruise, the list is endless. What would you pay NOT to see a film like that? Smile

My favorite is Dany De Vito as Flitwick!

Matt and Christel,

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember "meeting" Tim when I first began posting here in the summer of 2004. Like Mike, I remember those terrible puns and silly jokes he used to make. I loved them!

Recently I was poking through some of the archived threads and ran across a few of Tim's "diamonds" hidden in among them. I wish I'd had the opportunity to know Tim personally. He seems to have been such an interesting and accomplished person, and I'm willing to bet his joy spilled out over those who were privileged to spend time with him. I'm glad I had the opportunity to get a glimpse of his humor and friendliness here on the Forum.

Again, my condolences to you and your family.

Sincerely,

shepherdess - Jan 29, 2009 2:21 am (#23 of 53)

Today, when I learned of Tim's death, I was crying when I told my daughter that a former forum member had passed away. Her first thought upon seeing how upset I was, was "not Temrew" because she knew how much he meant to me.

This forum was started on October 2, 2002. On October 27, Tim introduced himself to us as "Scrambledeggs". I admit that, at first, I didn't quite know what to make of him. But I quickly learned about his sense of humor; that which has touched the lives of so many people and left an unforgettable impression.

I don't know if Kip would want me to mention this, but at one point Tim was considered as a possible host on the forum. He politely declined the invitation because he didn't want to be one who made or enforced rules; he preferred breaking them. Lol. Tim could be a little irreverent at times, leading to the occasional moderating "Tim you can't say that here". But as Denise mentioned, he would be the gentleman, apologize, and go on making people laugh. I respected him for that. I think he enjoyed being a part of the forum as much as we enjoyed having him here.

Tim was proud to be a Harry Potter fan. Having read the books several times, he was quite knowledgeable about them. The messages he posted were intelligent and thought provoking. I'm glad he lived long enough to read the last book and see how the series ended. I would love to be able to discuss it with him.

He taught me a couple of things non-Harry Potter related. Oddly enough, he taught me about the origin of golf. (Yes; it tied in with a Harry Potter discussion.) I also remember having a discussion with him about the difference between being English and being British. He was a bright and interesting man.

He was an asset to the forum, and we were blessed to have him as a member, and to get to know Tim the man.

To Matt, Christel, and the rest of Tim's family:

We are saddened and sorry for your loss. Please understand that, as we loved him too, we feel the loss with you and share in your grief. He will be remembered. He lives in a special place in many hearts, including mine.

Thank you for sharing him with us.

Timrew's posts on this forum were always vibrant, to the point, often with an element of wit, in a word: pithy. And like his life, seemed too short.

I'm so sorry to hear of Tim's passing. I know I'm not telling you anything new, but he was a fun loving, kind spirited, generous man. Tim will be sorely missed by those blessed to have known him. Whether in real life or just here on the HP Forum, he was someone special & it was a privileged to have called him a friend.

I didn't know Tim quiet as well as some on the HP Forum did, but it was always a joy to read his posts. He had a certain knack/gift for making us laugh....a knack that many aspire to have, but none do as well as what Tim did.

I remember when his father passed away. I truly think it surprised him on how many condolences & heartfelt sympathies he received back then. Yes, we might not have known his Dad personally, but we knew Tim & felt his loss. Now we've lost one of our own & it is a sad day here.

May the powers that be, bless & be with you (& all of Tim's family/friends) now & in the days to come.

Today I was thinking about how Tim coined a phrase that became quite popular here on the forum. When referring to the next generation of Death Eaters (Draco Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle, etc.), he dubbed them "Death Nibblers". LOL. That's hilarious! That's Tim! I loved that from the first time I read it.

Tim gone?
Tim gone....
Tim gone.
When I joined the forum, he was already there, and as has been mentioned by faster Forumers than I am, he was always good for a laugh - or better a broad smile, because with his funny sentence, he hit the nail right down. And this smile is worth much more than a laugh.
This made his contribution so valuable.

Much has been said about him and I cannot contribute more. But I offer my condolences to you and hope, that the memories you have of your father will survive in you, as he survives in you.

My condolences to the family.

There have been many times especially on the Snape thread where discussions would get heated but never once did I get the impression of him being overly caught up in the thick of it although he did have his opinions. As others have noted he was the one with the sly sense of humor that allowed us to laugh.

His term "death nibblers" so adequately captured how many people felt about Draco and his gang.

I am very saddened by this news. I pray that Tim's family might find strength and comfort during this time.

Arriving late to this discussion, I cannot add anything that hasn't already been said. Suffice to say, he will be sorely missed by our little corner of the internet. I remember his spirited posts on the Snape thread and his love of being devil's advocate.

I didn't have the good fortune of meeting Tim as I joined the forum quite late. Still, I have read his posts and feel that I got to know him this way ("Death Nibblers" is classic), and the news of his loss is devastating. He will be missed, never forgotten.

My prayers are with Tim's family.

I didn't know timrew as well as some of the other Forumers but I was genuinely sad to hear of his passing. I remember that he had been here a long time, I remember his fishing avatar, and I remember his reputation for SPEW moments. I am so sorry for your loss, Matt and Christel, and my thoughts are with you and everyone else who knew him.

I also want to extend my condolences to those fellow forumers who knew him better than I did and are grieving from the loss.

*hugs to all*

I only saw this thread today. I do remember timrew's posts, especially his wit and the fun fishing pictures. His posts were always fun to read. He is missed on the Forum.

Hi All!

This is Matt Kik, Tim's son. I just wanted to come on here and thank you all so much for all your messages and condolences, they really mean a lot and I know that my Dad really enjoyed the time he spent posting messages on these forums (the number of times he'd start telling me about something he'd heard about here or about people he was winding up!).

I was originally planning to print out all these messages to display at the funeral (which was on Tuesday) but having so much else to organise, I completely forgot so instead I'm going to e-mail the link to this thread out so people can come directly to read it.

Thanks again for all the messages, they are very much appreciated!

Matt

P.S That's Dad in my pic!

Matt and Cristel, I am deeply saddened by your loss. When I first found this forum, I thought, "These people are just a bit too into Harry Potter." It was Tim's funny posts that got me hooked, and I eventually ended up spending most of my life for the next 2 1/2 years on this forum. You have my sympathies.

Hugs...

I just returned from a long hiatus and saw this thread. I am saddened to hear of Tim's passing. He was one of the first people to greet me here when I first joined. It is a great loss indeed. He was one of the best debaters I have ever known and gentleman of the first quality.

Kip, do you think it would be a good idea to email Matt and let him know about the April 15th deadline for WX so that he will have the opportunity to save posts from this thread if he's so inclined? I don't know when he was last here; there may be some messages he hasn't read.

shepherdess, I definitely agree that Matt should be emailed. I will attempt to handle that today. Thanks for the thought!

Subject: Harry Potter Lexicon Forum ends 15 April 2011

Dear Matt,

On April 15 of this year, our Harry Potter Lexicon Forum will end and with that action, the thread on your father (+ Remembering timrew (Scrambledeggs) will cease to exist.

You should be able to copy the entire file to your hard drive and print it out, if you so desire. I felt that you should be notified of this so you could make plans. I have already save the entire thread to a print file; however it takes 72.8 MB, which is quite large for an email attachment.

I hope that you will be able to visit the Forum before April 15th. Your father and you are still in our thoughts.

Kip

Hi folks!

I got your e-mail and came as quickly as I could! I'm very sorry to hear about the end of the forum. If everyone here enjoys it half as much as my Dad used to then it's going to be a very sad day. Is something else being set up to replace it?

I have been back to this thread quite a few times in the last two years although I try not to come back too often. Every time I'm here I end up reading every single message and it a) takes me quite a while and b) get's me all emotional! I have indeed saved the page to my hard drive. It's so nice to re-read all the messages and it's always amazing how one person can have such an effect on a worldwide community.

For those who are interested, Dad's story finally ended on May 11th 2009 when I went with my wife and two close friends to Mount Snowdon in Wales to scatter Dad's ashes. In his youth he was very fond of walking and a few years ago he took himself off for a day to hike to the top and back, a journey he filmed on his old video camera. Quite a funny bit of film actually but I can't watch it any more as I only have it on video!

Anyway, we picked a pretty good day for it, not a cloud in the sky. Only problem was that the wind at the top of Snowdon was 80mph, too fast for the train to run to the top so two of Dad's old band mates who met us there were unable to meet us at the top.

We had a great day hiking up to the top and when we got there, everyone else stood back while I found a nice outcrop, un-corked Dad's remains and promptly "Big Lebowski'd" myself (I'm not going to explain that. You'll either have to watch the film or work it out for yourself!)

Despite that, it was a really beautiful spot and I think it's what he would have wanted (never thought to ask, was really expecting a decade or two more out of the stubborn git!)

Anyway, it was a day filled with good times and laughter, much like his funeral. It's an odd thing to find yourself enjoying a funeral but I really did, surrounded by friends and family it was a great day with music and, believe it or not, ceilidh dancing too!

Anyway I digress (a lot!) Thanks again to everyone here. Thank you for creating such a great community, thank you for welcoming my Dad into it, he really did love it and most of all, thank you for all the memories and messages of love. They were wonderful to read and still are to this day.

Matt, it sounds like Mt. Snowden is a beautiful spot and you had a lovely and fitting final tribute to your father (with the possible exception of the "Lebowski" part, which I am not certain about because I did not see the film, but I have a good idea... and if it is what I think it is, then it sounds exactly like something Tim would "do" and would think hysterically funny. )

My mom has a saying she uses sometimes for a father/son or mother/daughter who are much alike: "John Sr. will never be dead as long as John Jr. is alive." In this case I think we can safely say "Tim will never be dead as long as Matt is alive!" Thank you for the update and for another smile like the ones we used to get from Tim long ago.

"It's an odd thing to find yourself enjoying a funeral . . ."

I don't think so, Matt. When my dad died in 2005, we didn't actually have a funeral. It was really a celebration of his life, and there were probably as many belly laughs as there were tears. He was one of a kind, and he touched so many lives. Your dad was the same sort of person, I think. Even though most of us on this forum never met him in person, he touched nearly all of us with his wit and humor. I'm betting his impact on those he actually met and knew was even greater.

My dad died in 2005, and I still meet people, on occasion, who will tell me something I didn't know about my dad. Because I teach in a district where he farmed most of his life, I will sometimes meet people I didn't even know he knew, and it lights up a part of his life for me. As you continue your journey through life, I bet you will continue to meet new people whose lives were brightened by having come into contact with your dad, both online and in "real life." He was just that kind of guy.

Remembering Tim always has the power to make us smile. That was a gift he had and that you have too! Thank you for the smiles.

BTW, did you go bowling? (Big Lebowski joke - I do recommend seeing the movie if you haven't, it's priceless. Just be prepared to watch something er... unique.)

Tim, Those are the best kind of funerals. We made sure when my dad died that the "service" was telling funny stories and celebrating his life. I imagine there were times when you and your dad were at funerals and you found something funny but couldn't laugh. LPO

From what I knew of Tim, he would have loved the Lebowski moment. I'm glad to hear he can still bring smiles even after he's gone.
