Jo said that she hasn't made up her mind about the Book 7 title. (one of the references) I was thinking that we might offer her a helping hand.

She gave us the title of the 6th book more than a year before the book was published, so I must say that the missing of the title for the last book is scaring me a bit.

Then, I just wonder, if it wasn't for The Pillar of Storgé rumour, maybe we wouldn't have got the title so early?

So, my idea is to make predictions for the title of the Last Harry Potter book. Maybe if we invent something as awful as The Toenail of Icklibõgg, she will feel the need to give us the real title?

She already offered few wrong titles on her official site under the rumours section:

Harry Potter and the Pyramids of Furmat
Harry Potter and the Graveyard of Memories

I've always imagined that the last book's title would be
Harry Potter and the Final Battle
although I could never imagine Jo using that title.
I also remember some people calling it
Harry Potter and the Last Book
which I find a very appropriate title.

I must say that I'm quite intrigued with the character of Severus Snape. We seem to be quite sure that Harry is on the good side, but we desperately need the Seventh Book to see which side is Snape on. For me, personally, it is more important to se the end of Snape than the end of Harry or Voldemort because I have the feeling that I already know how will they end, but I have no idea about Snape. So, looking from that angle, Snape becomes the center of interest and the Last Book's title might be
Severus Snape and Harry Potter

Next thing that I found on the rumours section was about the title of a chapter of the HBP. So I thought that we could let our imagination think about the possible chapter titles in the Last Book too. We should just make sure that we propose them separately in order not to make a great mess of this thread.

An example:

Possible Book titles:
Harry Potter and Two Sides of One Coin
Harry Potter and the Happy End
Harry Potter in the Deep Forest

Possible Chapter Titles:
The Best Birthday Ever
The Chat with the Portrait
The Life Debt

Of course, there is no way that we could avoid few comments at the end.

I was wondering about that new word that she was inventing recently too... But no, I think that would be just too much for one thread.

Very good idea Lina!

I think that Hagrid too will play a very important role in Book 7, so I propose:

Possible book title:
Harry Potter and the Keeper of the Keys

And there are LOTS of "keys" Harry still has to find in book 7!

As for the chapters:
Godric's Hollow
The Red Dawn
The Rising of the Phoenix
And I think the book should end with a chapter called "The Man Who Lived"

kaykay1970 - Oct 21, 2006 9:16 am (#2 of 148)

Cool thread Lina!

The horcrux hunt will be central to the plot. Some horcruxes may be harder to find than others. Nagini will be with Voldemort and the locket may be the one from Grimmauld Place. Some horcruxes may even be right under his nose but he has no idea...

Possible book title:

Harry Potter and the Cursed Tiara

I love all of Elanor's chapter titles, especially The Man Who Lived!

OOOO Great idea, Lina!

Book titles, hmmmmmmm:

Harry Potter and the Connections of Wands! LOL I dunno, I'm not very creative! But I think that the fact that Vold and Harry's wands are brothers is important!

I like "The Man who lived for the title of the last chapter!

Gotta run!

Me kayaking, Niagara River, August 2006. I have been likened to Reepicheep in this photo.
The problem with Harry Potter and the Final Battle, of course, is that it's too similar to The Last Battle, the final book of The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis.

"The Man Who Lived" is a great idea. Good going, Audrey!

As for book titles… with the exception of the words 'Azkaban' and 'Half-Blood,' everything in a book title has been something new, completely unintroduced in previous books. I'm afraid guessing a title might be too difficult. Don't forget, also, her most recent titles (recent as in books 4-6) haven't been the absolute central story to the plot (most especially "Goblet of Fire"), so don't be expecting the words following "and the" to be the key to learning something to the book's plot.

legolas returns - Oct 21, 2006 11:01 am (#7 of 148)

Chapter titles may be a little difficult to guess. The chapter where Ron got poisoned was called "Birthday surprises". The chapter where Dumbledore arrived at Privit drive was called "Will and Wont". We spent ages wondering what "Spinners End" was about when JKR put it on her Website.

Genealogy....Where you confuse the dead & irritate the living!
When I read Elanor's chapter title of The Rising of the Phoenix made me think that it would be be good as a book title too. Such as:

Book Titles:

Harry Potter & the Flight of the Phoenix

---others---

Harry Potter & The Journey's End
Harry Potter & Dumbledore's Tale
Harry Potter & The Founder's Battle

Not much there I know, but in trying to keep with the "Harry Potter &..." theme, well it was kinda limiting. And I loved "The Man Who Lived" as the last chapter too. Great job, Elanor!!!

- - - - - - - - - -
legolas returns - Oct 21, 2006 12:37 pm (#10 of 148)

"The man who lived" would be a great chapter. It would be a great temptation to turn to the back of the book first-even though that would be cheating.

I think a good chapter title for Harrys journey to Godrics Hollow would be-"Return to the begining". Its in keeping with JKRs way of calling chapters. The chapters dont mean much until you have read the chapter.

I like the "Journey's End" title for the book.

How about: Harry Potter and the Phoenix Song

My brother suggested: Harry Potter and the Big Conclusion

- - - - - - - - - -
Phelim Mcintyre - Oct 22, 2006 5:36 am (#13 of 148)

Okay, the first four words are easy - Harry Potter and the .... The title is a clue to what happens in the book. So now what? I doubt it will be anything as obvious as horcrux hunt. Phoenix Song is a good title, but if we got the title that could give the game away - but then with our guesses concerning who the Half-Blood Prince was it may not. But how about Harry Potter and the Squeaky Stair.

Chapter titles: Godric's Hollow is a great one, as is the Man Who Lived (presuming Harry surivies). I think there could be other titles like Ollivanders Shop (if the wand is a horcrux). There will be a chapter title about when Harry and Voldemort meet for the last time. Probably where they meet. I think it could be somewhere we have seen before, either the Ministry or the Cave. I would love it to be at Godric's Hollow - for Harry to finally vanquish Voldemort where his saga started. I can see Graveyard of Memories being a chapter title even if Jo has dismissed it as a book title.

- - - - - - - - - -
Good Evans - Oct 22, 2006 6:34 am (#14 of 148)

Practically perfect in every way
Great idea for a thread Lina - and some lovely ideas so far.

I think this last book title has to be big enough in order to bring it all to a conclusion, yet remain enigmatic so lets think .....

Harry Potter and the Greatest Wizard
Harry Potter and the Double Agent
Harry Potter and the Wizards Legacy
Harry Potter and the Forgotten Friend

some chapters as I would like to see them...

Vows and promises - the wedding and something to do with the unbreakable vow that Snape swore to narcissa - maybe confirming it is now released
Through the Privet - back to the Durselys
Fur and Fangs - the squeaky stair / attack by death eaters (including Greyback) and Mr Tibbles saves the day!!!
RAB revealed - off to Godrics Hollow, a horcrux and discovery of RAB
The House Elfs tale- Kreachers story of how he helped Regulus get the locket
The Darkening skies - a quick look at Voldemorts side, maybe Narcissa, Draco, Bella or Snape also dark goings on in the magical community and increased panic and impending doom
A Big Mistake - something to do with Hagrid and Grawp

That'll do to start it off - I like Audreys final chapter name - its very appropriate - I hope! Gosh I can't wait to read it now!!...... oh yes, these are our guesses and not the actual titles - rats!!!

- - - - - - - - - -
Phelim Mcintyre - Oct 22, 2006 8:55 am (#15 of 148)

I like the idea of Kreacher helping Regulus get the horcrux. Would he have been effected by the potions and protections in the same way as a human?

Book Titles: -Harry Potter and the Final Chance -Harry Potter and the Seer's Dream (Trewlaney, I think she is going to be a key facotr...how I dunno, but she is!)

Oooooooooooooooh, I love you people, you are really great! So many titles I would really like to see in the book.

I join all who like The man who lived. Very romantic.

I like The red Dawn too but I even think it would be more appropriate for the Book title:

HP and the Red (or Ruddy) Dawn

I agree whit all who think that there will definitely be a chapter Godric's Hollow. (Why didn't I think of it? )

I admit that I thought of Harry Potter and the Phoenix Song after I saw Harry Potter & the Flight of the Phoenix, too. I do think that the Phoenix song will reappear when Harry and Voldemort meet again.

I love the Squeaky Stair and the Forgotten Friend and The House Elfs tale and Once and Never!

I hope for The Big Mistake but I expect it to be connected to some DD's mistake.

I also agree that the most difficult Horcrux might be in the Book title, the one that we have no idea what could be, so I think that Harry Potter and the Cursed Tiara qualifies for that kind of title.

At some point Jo said that the 6th and 7th book are more like two parts of one book, so I don't find it so impossible for Snape to find his place in the title... Harry Potter and the Double Agent might be one version.

Here are few more of my guesses, mostly inspired by yours:
HP & the Truth
HP & His Choices
HP & the Tunnel
HP & the Last Prophecy
HP & the Well

Chapters:
Petunia's confession
Alberforth Dumbledore
The Meeting of the Roads
Secret Revealed
Patronus' Visit

The more we guess, the more we have chance to pick some correctly.

Okay. I will never be right but here are a few thoughts.

Harry Potter and the Third Knight. As a Wizard's Chess reference.

Harry Potter and the Golden Orb of Ardan. In response to Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Wizard's Maze. I don't know it just sounds good.

Harry Potter and the Praxofer Curse. In response to the curse put on DADA teachers. But that curse does not have a name yet. Sooo

Harry Potter and the Hall of Hogwarts. The last secret passage.

Harry Potter and the eht dna Rettop Yrrah. A Mirror reference. hehehehe.

The eyes are the windows to the soul...
I'm thinking that the word "choice" will definitely feature in somewhere. So maybe something like Harry Potter and the Final Choice although that sounds a bit overly dramatic. Thom, "prophecy" is another good guess -- maybe something like Harry Potter and the Decree of the Prophecy or ... well, no... but something like that. Creative, I am not.

I like the idea of the book title having something to do with a phoenix, but that would create havoc for the artwork people coming up with the British cover art -- didn't they already use a flaming phoenix for the HBP cover? Or was that the Dutch cover? Somebody used a big flaming orange/red phoenix...

I like all of your chapter titles, Good Evans! And I definitely agree that the final chapter should be entitled The Man Who Lived -- absolutely brilliant, Audrey!

Perhaps a chapter title like Eyes of the Past (or "...From the Past" or "...To the Past") which could be a chapter explaining Lily's backstory and why it's so crucial that Harry's eyes are like hers.

Also Socks of the Phoenix because I really want to know why Dumbledore sees himself in the Mirror of Erised wearing a pair of warm wooly socks!

Lolol! Don't feel old. My 11 y.o. daughter is reading "The Clue of the Broken Locket" for 6th grade mystery book assignment. The girls mostly chose Nancy Drew and the boys chose Hardy Boys for their reading material. It was kind of gratifying to find this out.

Esther Rose, I LOVE the mirror title! But you have to shift the letters a bit so it can be pronounced....Harry Potter and the Dnar Ettopyr Rah..........or something like that (I dropped the 2nd "the").

I also love "Socks of the Phoenix"!!! Gave me a vision of a magnificient, elegant flaming phoenix rising into the air, with rainbow striped socks on it's feet! LOL Very Happy

I like "HP and the Flight of the Phoenix"....except that "The Flight of the Phoenix" is already associated with another great movie. So....instead I'll support "HP and the Rise of the Phoenix".

Or maybe....HP and the Choices of the Phoenix

...but "phoenix" has already been in one book title and using it again may be confusing....

so maybe....HP and the Choices of the Past....a reference to Lily's choice to give her life for one she loved, just as Harry may have to choose to give up his life to destroy LV and provide a safe life for those he loves....even though I am convinced that JKR will allow him to be "The Man Who Lived".

Elenor perhaps i am just too hormonal, but I love your proposed chapters, particularly, "The Man Who Lived". It made me feel all choked up. "Godric's Hollow" just has to be there. I have spent a lot of time wondering what will we find there. I don't know why but I am not all that enthused about Red Dawn although I certainly understand it.

For a book title she is going to take us somewhere new I predict, although not necessarily -a place.

How about Harry Potter and the House Elves' Revolt?

I think something is going to happen along the lines of the beings from the statue of magical brethren uniting to overcome Voldemort in someway. I'm sure the battle between Mouldy Voldie and DD in the Ministry, and the way the statues got involved mean something.

"Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up." A.A. Milne
Someone on another board suggested "Harry Potter and the Dump Truck Full of Money." – Die Z.
That prompted me to think like this:
Dump truck full of money ? changing story writing into gold ? Chrysopoeia ? I should check that in Wikipedia, and so I did:

In alchemy, the term chrysopoeia means transmutation into gold (from the Greek words for "gold", chrysón and "to make", poiéin), although it is also symbolically used to indicate the philosopher's stone as the completion of the Great Work. The word was used in the title of an alchemical textbook, the Chrysopoeia of Kleopatra, which was probably written in the late hellenistic period, although it gained wider fame only in the middle ages. The book is mainly centred around the idea of "one to all" (en to pan), a concept that is related to ouroboros and to hermetic wisdom. from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysopoeia"
I added the bold, but how weird is that? Even so, I'm predicting the term "Chrysopoeia" will NOT be in any title.

Harry Potter and the Ridiculously Long Book Which Culminates in Many Happenings Which Were Completely Unexpected – azi
aka Harry Potter meets Lemony Snicket

Another silly thought— In Lina's original post beginning this thread she gave a link to the rumours section of Jo's website, which I will quote in part: Let me remind you once again that any ‘information’ about the contents of ‘Half-Blood Prince’ should be treated with extreme scepticism unless it comes from this website or from my publishers or agent. The silly season is upon us; there’s bound to be an ‘inside leak’, ie, total fabrication, any time now.
OK, notice how inside leak was set off in single quotes? ...there’s bound to be an ‘inside leak’? So, how about a chapter title "Inside Leak" Half of the chapter would be set in the Leaky Cauldron where secret information is revealed, and the other half of the chapter would be a return to the Chamber of Secrets through Hogwarts' crumbling plumbing.

Elanor - Nov 3, 2006 9:37 am (#73 of 148)

That would be very cunning of her Chemyst, so deliciously cunning that it would not surprise me for a second you'd be right on teh chapter title!!!

BTW, another word for the achieved Philosopher's Stone (and there are LOTS of them) is simply "ruby", which would sound good in a title!

I also like the chapter title, "The Man Who Lived!" I don't think the last chapter would be called "The Survivors" because she would then need other chapters named "The Amazing Race," "Big Brother," "Godric's Hollow: Extreme Makeover, Home Edition!" (Would that be a flashback via the pensive?)
Not to mention titles named "The Biggest Looser" (would it be Grawp or Hagrid?), "Fear Factor" (Oh, wait, we had that with Ron and Aragog!) , Bill could be featured in "Extreme Makeover" or Marietta in "The Swan."

Well, maybe not those exactly.

I think we can really continue on guessing the chapter tittles. At least there will be much more of them than the Book titles so we have more chance to get few of them correct...

I also think that there will have to be one chapter Godric's Hollow.

I was planning to find the title that was the closest to the real one, but for the moment, I can't think of any that was. Maybe those that were mentioning horcruxes? But I'm afraid that we won't know that until we read to book.

OK, maybe one of the chapters will be just Halloween or The First Halloween...

Sounds like one of those old 1970's Wonderful World of Disney TV-movies with a couple of nosey kids solving some mystery...

I can just see Voldemort shaking his fist and yelling "You blasted kids!"

How about Dumbledore's Big Mistake, The Draught of Living Death, The Heir of Gryffindor?

Lol, Madame Pince! "I could have been the greatest, immortal wizard if not for those nosey kids!"

I think one title will be connected to Charlie Weasley and/or Romania.

How about A Romanian Voyage.

I like Whereabouts of a Werewolf. Not only is it alliterative, but it can refer to more than one character and have more than one meaning.

Practically perfect in every way
Hee Hee Hee John - yes I like that!!!

I feel that we may get "Owl Post" again - Jo seems to like using this one.

how about .."Hogwarts a History" ? How many times has this book been mentioned maybe there is something about the school we need to know. Harry may not be returning to complete year 7 but I cannot believe he wont have to go to the School at some point.

I like that John, something dealing with Dung makes sense.

Oh no, I had a terrible thought. Jo wouldn't use "Essence of Dung" would she?

If Dung really mattered to the plot, wouldn't Jo have warned the film makers not to leave him out of OotP? Which they did...

I know the films aren't canon, but I think she does give them advice about what to put in or out.

Hermione will work in Fred & George's Joke Shop after Hogwarts
This is true, Die. Which leads one to wonder about Ginny... why was she included in the first movie if she isn't important? I'm expecting great things from her in DH Smile
