Harry Potter and the sevens & seventeens

This topic serves as an archive of a thread from the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum as hosted on World Crossing which ceased operation on April 15, 2011. At that time, this thread was still set in the "New Discussions Threads Not Approved or Placed" folder of the WC forum. Elanor

There are numbers which recur throughout the book like a spider web connecting all the nook and corner.

Seven – the most powerful magical number. It is the most commonly used number in the HP saga. Here are some of the important seven letters names.

Horcrux

Phoenix

Weasley

Granger

Severus

Deathly

Hallows

The list goes on… What could be the reason for choosing seven as the most powerful magical number? May be the number of letters in Rowling!!!

Almost every important place, teacher’s class rooms, common rooms, room of requirement, etc lie on the seventh floor of Hogwarts. Number of books, course duration in Hogwarts, number of registered animagi, cost of Harry’s wand [7 galleons], number of players per team in Quidditch, number of weasley’s children, number of secret tunnels in Hogwarts, number of bottles in Snape’s puzzle, number of words in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets”, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”… all end up in the magical number – seven. Above all, the first chapter of every book begins exactly in the 7th page.

Seventeen

Number of letters in “Philosopher’s Stone” = 17

Number of letters in “Prisoner of Azkaban” = 17

Number of letters in “Order of the Phoenix” = 17

Number of letters in the common prefix of the 7 books “Harry Potter and the” = 17

Number of letters in Rowling’s favorite chapter “The Mirror of Erised” = 17

Number of years Rowling took to complete the Harry Potter saga = 17

Number of chapters in the first book = 17

The final book releases on 21-07-07 [2+1+0+7+0+7]

Both seven and seventeen letters look very pleasant in a word. The eye likes numbers with a central point in the middle. It's the same with flowers: There must always be a number which cannot be divided by two. (I don't know how you call them - uneven numbers?) And the seventh son of a seventh son is a wizard? (I'm not sure about that.)

Seven is supposed to be a magical number. Rowling also commonly uses 12 and 13 as well.

Yum!
I think there is a thread for Rowling's use of numbers. I'll try to find it.

Edit, I couldn't find one! I just seem to remember having this discussion a long time ago! LOL

Kate (Lina's daughter) started a thread on the number 7 a while ago. It will be a shame if it has disappeared since it had a lot of examples of where the number 7 is used in the books;

7 Weasley's
7 Horcruxes
7 Potters in DH
7 players on a Quidditch team
7 years at Hogwarts

And lots more!

Oh, and we call numbers like 7 'odd' numbers, Orion. Uneven numbers makes a lot of sense though.

Haha, thanks, Azi! I knew there was something on numbers somewhere! I remember it now!

Orion, you might also be thinking of prime numbers - numbers that can only be divided by themselves and 1. 7 is a prime number, so is 17. So is 13, another of JKR's favourites.

There are a lot of numbers that take on a significance in Harry Potter.

Another seven: there are 142 staircases in Hogwarts. 1+4+2=7.

I always found it curious and strangely fitting that there are nine levels in the Ministry of Magic, not counting the tenth level, the courtroom (judgement), which is not accessible by the lifts. There also are nine levels in Dante's hell.

Yes, there are seven Weasley siblings. What's more notable is what happens with the Weasley family after Percy is more or less disinherited. Things start to fall apart.

Four seems to be an unlucky number, as is six and 12. There were four houses, but look what happened to Slytherin's relationship with the others. There were four competitors in the Goblet of Fire. Six students went to the department of mysteries. Incidentally, I know in many parts of China, four is considered a very unlucky number.

Mommy, Queen of Everything
and Harry escapes LV 7 times before going to face his "death", and ultimately defeating him...

1. As a baby 2. At the end of PS/SS 3. In the Chamber 4. In the graveyard 5. In the ministry 6. On the way to Tonk's parents' house 7. In Godric's Hollow

Nice find, Puck. I hadn't noticed that before. I wonder if Jo is intentional with this or if it's a result of the 'magic' of the series?

Another unlucky four: The Marauders. There were four of them and look at what happened to them:

1) James- betrayed by Peter, murdered by Voldemort. 2) Sirius- killed by Bellatrix 3) Peter- traitor, killed by the hand Voldemort created for him 4) Remus- killed in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Also, the Potters and the Longbottoms had thrice defied Voldemort (or his supporters I suppose) and were unsuccessful the fourth time

Very nice. Only, isn't Malfoy Manor number 8?

Harry never saw Voldemort in Malfoy Manor, he escaped before Voldy arrived. So I guess you could say it doesn't count (the others were all face to face).

Was Godric's Hollow really face to face? I thought Harry just fought the snake, then LV showed up after Harry was already unconscious. I could be wrong, though. I haven't particularly wanted to reread that scene...

Voldemort watches as Harry and Hermione jump out the window (and Harry sees this, as he can't block the connection at this time). So it's face to back, at least

As I was rereading Chapter 3 of HBP, looking for material for a trivia quiz, I found that Dumbledore performs seven spells while at the Dursleys' house:

1. To make the sofa zoom forward and knock the Dursleys on to it
2. To make the sofa return to its original position
3. To summon and serve the mead (this appears to be only one spell)
4. To make the Dursleys' glasses stop knocking them on the heads
5. To summon Kreacher
6. To send Harry's trunk and Hedwig and her cage to the Burrow
7. To open the front door to leave

I wouldn't have noticed this except that the fifth wave of Dumbledore's wand is specifically identified as such.
