I'm not sure if this has been covered or not, but I'll give it a shot. I'm trying to gather a list of all of Harrys most prized material items. Named gifts, purchases, ect. I feel these things should not be forgotten as JKR has no useless information. The following are things that I could think of.

The Photo Album (Hagrid)

Hedwig (Hagrid)

Weasley Sweaters but how many? (Mrs. Weasley)

Wand

Sneakoscope (Ron)

Mirror, in pieces (Sirius)

Pocket Knife, melted (Sirius)

Firebolt (Sirius)

Broom care kit, including compass (Hermirone)

Books, Does anyone have a full list of his books?

Invisability cloak (James through Dumbledore)

Golden Egg (Fourth Book)

Dress Robes

Anything else? I feel like I'm forgetting things.

HBP: 16th July 2005: the most anticipated day in history
I was shocked to see that Hedwig was mentioned in the things that live in Harry's trunk but I know what you mean!

Books: See HPL: School Books

Note for the above link: Harry does not have all the books in the YEAR 3 list and those Lockhart books may have found their way into the Gryffindor fire!

As for Weasley sweaters...

SS/PS: An emerald green sweater.

CS: New and hand-knitted

PA: Scarlet with the Gryffindor Lion on front.

GF: Green with a dragon on it.

OP: Usual hand-knitted one.

EDIT: Other things in trunk could include things that are special to Harry including Sirius' Christmas card with the pawprint, his first birthday card etc. Just remembered, also the Marauder Map.

How many Hogwarts' robes has Harry had to buy? Of course, once when he started Hogwarts but any other times?

I'm not sure where Harry keeps his Quidditch robes, but they could be in his trunk. I think he keeps his Firebolt in his trunk.

- - - - - - - - - -
Padfoot - Jun 14, 2004 10:40 am (#7 of 135)

I think Harry has had to buy robes two or three times. He bought them his first year. I think Mrs. Weasley bought them one year for him. And then in PoA, didn't he buy some when in Diagon Alley for a week?

Your right, there was no mention of Harry getting his Firebolt back. Hmmm... Well if he doesn't have it now, he will get it shortly. Either by owl or by the first of the school year.

He got robes at the beginning of first year, and then new ones while he was staying at the Leaky Cauldron before the start of third year, and then Mrs. Weasley had to pick them up dress robes. But would the dress robes be kept in his trunk since they only needed to have them in fourth year?

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jun 14, 2004 10:53 am (#9 of 135)

OH!! The Maurauder's map!! I almost forgot about that.

Padfoot- I think that the firebolt is kinda like the maurauders map after book four. It was never mentioned, but JKR assuses that Harry knicks it back at the end of the year when he's gathering all his things.

So thing to add to the list are Dobbys socks, the map, quidditch robes, regular robes, standard school supplies (like cloves, cauldron, potion ingredients, ect.), birthday cards.

EDIT- I'm guessing that the Weasley sweaters and the Dobby socks are more than just a fashion statement, I think there is some magic woven into those as well. Next time I type out the entire list I'm going to key it of magical things, potentially magical things, standard items or something like that.

I suppose Harry will still have his dress robes from his fourth year, even though they may not fit him anymore. Harry probably keeps things as a reminder of past events.

I don't know why this popped out at me, but the mini Firebolt that Tonks gave Harry would be in his trunk.

- - - - - - - - - -
Padfoot - Jun 14, 2004 11:12 am (#11 of 135)

NYCNomad, what do the "magical" sweaters do? (Besides keep Harry and the Weasley's warm in that drafty school during the winter.)

Besides the birthday gifts (Quiddich Through the Ages, Boom Servicing Kit, miniature firebolt, set of DADA books...) do you think he kept his omnioculars (sp?) and his miniature dragon too?

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jun 14, 2004 11:21 am (#12 of 135)

Yes, the omniocculars, dress robes, the mini firebolt (I don't remember that? when did that happen?), the minature dragon too. Wasn't QTTA a library book? And the Broom servicing kit is in the original list.

As far as what the sweaters might do besides keep them warm... hmm, maybe allow Mrs. Weasley to know where they are at all times as a way to make sure they are all safe? Perhaps a small shield charm that would block some basic and weak cursed/charms? Maybe self cleaning? who knows? Just another one of my wild and random theories.

Also, Sirius and Remus gave him a stack of books at Christmas OP.

Maybe Molly's sweaters fit whoever they were knitted for even if that person grows. I like the idea of the sweaters linking back to Molly's wonderful clock. Has she added a Harry hand yet? The Ron hand might be doing some starnge things since Ron gave Dobby a sweater in GoF.

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jun 14, 2004 12:02 pm (#15 of 135)

Mike-if Ron gave his sweater to Dobby would the hand constantly switch between home and school since Dobby lives at Hogwarts, and Ron is there most of the year, but then Dobby is always there and so he's always at home. Wow, I'm confusing myself, perhaps it grew an extra hand or 2? One for Harry and one for Dobby.

If I remember correctly, she borrowed, on his behalf, QTTA from the library in PS/SS after he was made seaker. I think she gave him Quidditch Teams of Brittian and Ireland or something like that or Christmas one year. I'm at mum's work at the moment, no books handy, perhaps on the Lexicon, I'll go look.

EDIT: The Lexicon has a list of Quidditch books. Quidditch Teams of Brittian and Ireland is Mentioned as turning up in GoF, chapter 23. I think this the book Hermione gave Harry. Here's the whole page, if you're interested. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Didn't Ron give Harry a book about the Cudley Cannons (Flying with the Cannons or something like that)?

Would Harry still have the Golden Egg from the 1st/2nd task? There is no mention of him ever turning it in but it seems like an odd thing to keep.

- - - - - - - - - -
Lady Nagini - Jun 14, 2004 4:58 pm (#27 of 135)

Ron had given him a book called Flying with the Cannons, a book of interesting facts about his favorite Quidditch team (US CoS 212).

Thanks Lady Nagini!

Do you think Harry might keep old robes and other stuff he doesn't use (though maybe not books) at his room in Privet Drive? I mean, if he can't wear his first year robes, why not leave them under the loose floorboard under his bed instead of let them take up room in his trunk?

- - - - - - - - - -
Lady Nagini - Jun 14, 2004 5:19 pm (#29 of 135)

Well, he always has magic. What's to say that the house-elves can't magically "let out" the seams on old school robes? Or even if that's not feasible, I'm sure that his trunk is magically expandable, so it really doesn't matter if the robes take up space or not. I can't see Harry voluntarily leaving anything even remotely concerning Hogwarts behind at the Dursley's.

I can easily believe that since Harry was allowed so few possessions when growing up that he finds uses for almost everything that he has... the robes he probably uses to cover Hedwigs cage- Ron does this in the fourth book with his own robes and Pig, I know my parrot's cage needs to be covered in blankets when she sleeps, so I suspect Harry would do the same for Hedwig.

I think it's highly interesting to note that almost everything that Sirius gave Harry (bar the broomstick and the books that also came from lupin) is now broken... does this signify something? Also, I'm not sure if this is the right place to make this comment, but I've always found it suspiscious that we didn't see the purchasing of Hedwig and that Hagrid just happens to turn up with him... Hedwig is a very intelligent bird.

I can't imagine even trying to lift that trunk with all of those books in it... and I think Harry does try to take everything with him because he wouldn't risk leaving anything with the dursleys and probably would feel intrusive leaving anything at the burrow and it would simply be inconvenient to leave things at No. 12

I thought Hedwig was a her. We do see the purchase in the books. Hagrid takes Harry into Eeylops Owl Emporium and buys him Hedwig as a birthday present.

First, I thought Hedwig was a female owl...and what do you mean?

Twenty minutes later, they left Eeylops Owl Emporium, which had been dark and full of rustling and flickering, jewel-bright eyes. Harry now carried a large cage that held a beautiful snowy owl, fast asleep with her head under her wing. He couldn't stop stammering his thanks (US SS 81)

Harry goes to buy Hedwig with Hagrid; we just don't see them inside the shop.

EDIT: Sigh, cross-posting with Sarah again.

S.E. Jones - Jun 14, 2004 5:40 pm (#36 of 135)

Why can't he burn it? There are other ways to burn things than by using a fireplace. They aren't nearly as safe, true, but they do work. Also, couldn't he just rip the letters up and throw the pieces away in different places in the house? We do that with bank papers and such so that the different pieces will go into different trash sacks.....

Genealogy....Where you confuse the dead & irritate the living!
I would think either Harry's truck expands inside, like the Weasley's car--cause didn't Mad-Eye spend basically the entire school year locked in his trunk? That or there is some sort of a charm/spell that condenses things for it all to fit maybe?

Plus, he has the socks that Petunia/Vernon gave him too, that was in his trunk.

After reading Sarah's post on ripping up the paper and putting it in different trash cans, got me to thinking of Harry doing that or even using it in the bottom of Hedwig's cage? But then I think of Harry keeping nearly every bit of the letters that he gets while he is at the Dursley's. As he never got anything such thing before, they just hold a special endearing meaning to him and he wants to hold on and re-read at times when he is alone?

Justin Rapp - Jun 14, 2004 7:38 pm (#42 of 135)

I'm 45% obsessed! (Only 45? ô¿ô )
Deb, the Moody trunk was a different magical trunk than Harry has. I'm just basically picturing Harry's trunk as- well, as a trunk, I guess. Maybe it's enlarged with a charm, but I believe he's using the same trunk all along, and being as he couldn't have gotten his hands on anything really magical or interesting before he started at Hogwarts, I think it's just a regular, Muggle trunk. Also, maybe he just attaches the Nimbus/Firebolt to the top of the trunk - his trunk has those racks that people have on top of their cars for long trips - hehe.

Genealogy....Where you confuse the dead & irritate the living!
Justin Rapp--you could be right, as I don't remember if the books ever said if Harry got the trunk from home or got it while he was getting the rest of his school supplies that first year? Thinking about it though--would the Dursley's have given him a trunk to use? Somehow I don't see them doing that or anything for Harry. Don't have the books close to me right now to see if they say one way or another.

Other possible items:

(1) Flute (from Hagrid at Christmas in PS/SS)

(2) Toothpick (from Dursleys at Christmas in CoS)

(3) Coathanger (from Dursleys for tenth birthday)

I don't think he has the socks that came with the coathanger, as he has given them to Dobby.

Well, there is no mention of whose trunk it is. Here are the only references I found.

"Got everythin'? Come on, then." --Hagrid (US SS 63)

Harry's huge, heavy trunk had been loaded into the Dursley's car (US SS 90)

I'm guessing he got the trunk while in Diagon Alley because, as Deb suggested, I can't see the Dursleys giving Harry a trunk or any kind to put magical things into.

I also don't think he kept the coathanger and toothpick the Dursleys gave him. Why would anyone want to?

Oh, wouldn't he have extra Muggle clothes in his trunk at least part of the time?

Yeah. Me neither.

Yeah, I don't know exactly what they wear under their robes (I'm not going to say Muggle clothes, since that's serious movie contamination), but I'm sure they wear Muggle clothes at least some of the time.

- - - - - - - - - -
S.E. Jones - Jun 15, 2004 1:31 am (#48 of 135)

Let it snow!
Well, in the books, he wears t-shirts under his Quidditch robes (he had his wand in a pocket or something of his t-shirt in PoA in case Dementors showed up while playing Ravenclaw). Also, Mrs. Weasley is able to get to his Muggle clothes to lay some out at times so he's got to carry at least some with him. There are also references in the books to sneakers sticking out under robes and pantlegs sticking out under robes....

I'd say the real Movie contamination is the uniform that matches the robes instead of the robes being the uniform over Muggle clothes....

OK, so here's the list that I have so far. I'm putting the non-standar items on top and trying to work down to the most basic/common items. You're welcome, NYCNomad. As I look at the list, which is pretty long for a trunkful of stuff, the things that stand out the most form me are the gifts which Harry has never used. For a kid who never had a friend or gifts until he turned 11, he sure doesn't treasure their gestures of friendship like I would expect. Also, I want to see Harry make good use of his dream diary - Ron, too.

I always thought that was homework to be turned in and graded.

OH!! I forgot that he had an Eagle feather quill from Hermirone and he also got color changing ink in the first book.

How about miscellaneous dungbombs and zonkos stuff like them? And did he keep the pieces to his broken Nimbus 2000? I know he did at least for a little while...

Has anyone checked the passage where harry finds that his trunk has been invaded and riddle's diary stolen? I know it describes that his trunk contents are all over the floor, but I don't know if it describes them at all (I"m at work, so I can't check...)

I always pictured Harry's trunk to be huge - like a big steamer trunk. So I was a bit confused when I saw the suitcase-looking thing in the movie.

Is "trunk" a British term for "suitcase"?

I like my steamer trunk idea better - one with a spell similar to the one Arthur used on the car.

aka The Barmy Old Codger
Harry's trunk in the movies seems almost a cross between a suitcase and a trunk; sort of a child's trunk. Kids clothes are smaller and you can easily get by with something samller.

However, referring back to the books (and canon), there seems to be several situations where people have trouble handling the kids trunks (it takes both Fred and George in CoS to get Harry's; and, getting all of them into the taxi's at the beginning of GoF for example).

Accio Book Six - Jun 15, 2004 9:07 am (#59 of 135)

I am fairly certain that pretty much anything that you could buy in Diagon Alley would be magically modified. I'd wager my whole hardcover collection that his trunk could fit as much as he wants in it... just like the trunk (haha) of Arthurs old Ford Anglia. And I think that of course it would be heavy, as it carries all of his stuff. But that can be helped... doesn't harry ponder performing an enchantment on his trunk to make it feather light? That seems like it would be the first thing on a fully qualified wizard's mind before exerting ANY energy on barbaric muggle practices?

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jun 15, 2004 9:22 am (#60 of 135)

Some of the simplest and most common spells that seem to be most widely used is a space enhancing charm, like the tents at the world cup and the Ford. The feather light spell, Harry considered it an easy charm after 2 years of school. And as Flitwick said, the levitation charm, during their Halloween Charms class, book 1.

I am confused. I thought that Hedwig had a cage and didn't ride in the trunk. Since she is a living creature, wouldn't she need the fresh air?

Lady Bug- Hedwig does have a cage and is not living in the trunk, but this is a list of all of his possesions. I started this thread in hopes of remembering some small detail that we could have forgotten. Such as the omniocculars. It seems they were bought up and left forgotten, not very much like JKR to drop something like that. Just looking to keep everything in plain sight.

Thanks Julia, good to know I was semi-coherant this morning. Here is an updated list of everything that's been mentioned so far. What my initial idea with this was to try to pull out the things that were bought in and then left for forgotten that might come into play in later books. Some of the big things Harry has not made good use of are: the omnioculars, the pocket sneakoscope, and Dobby's socks and portrait. Also, I'd like to see him take a trip to his bank vault and look around for anything that isn't actually money. The vault is really like an enormous safety deposit box - so I'd expect Lily and James to keep some non-monetary valuables there.

Harry's portrait is a painting - even if it does resemble a gibbon (am I remembering that right?), I would think it could talk like the other magical paintings. Is it just waiting for someone to strike up a conversation?

I would think the omnioculars would be ideal for any situation that Harry wanted to watch closely, since Harry could replay the entire scene afterwards and analyze it.

It was in OotP in which Harry finally discards his broken watch. I don't recall the chapter since I'm at work. As far as other materials for his posetions he would have loads of parchment full of class notes, homework thats been returned and exams.

In case I didn't mention it before, another possible item would be the arm that was ripped off the Krum action figure after the Yule Ball.

It is, however, possible that the action figure was repaired at some time, by either Harry or Ron.

Robert, the Krum arm is Rons.

John, While those items are listed seperatly, I count those among standard school supplies.

I'mm happy this thread evolved into a full listing of everything, it includes things that I forgot about, or hinted at more importance of the smaller things. But my thought is to bring attention to the thing singular to Harry that could come back into play.

Robert Dierken - Jul 7, 2004 6:32 pm (#106 of 135)

I thought that Harry might have kept the arm so that the action figure could be repaired later. I think, however, that such a repair has probably taken place by the end of OoP.

Another thought:

One of the items mentioned was a money bag. I think that Harry would have some muggle money as well as wizard money. It would be very convenient when he is in Little Whinging!

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jul 13, 2004 5:11 am (#109 of 135)

I don't think he has any muggle money, unless he changed some over at Gringotts (spelling?). It says in book one that the Dursleys rarely gave him any pocket money, and since he started in Hogwarts that has probably even dropped to even less money. They clothe him and feed him, but just enough to keep him alive.

Chris. - Jul 13, 2004 2:21 pm (#110 of 135)

The only muggle money that I remember Harry having was the fifty-pence piece from the Dursleys, which, because it was such a weird shape to wizards, gave to Ron.

- - - - - - - - - -
Robert Dierken - Jul 13, 2004 8:29 pm (#111 of 135)

I note that in PS/SS, Hagrid and Harry depart from Diagon Alley, and travel to Paddington on the Underground, where Harry then takes a train back to Little Whinging.

In OoP, Arthur and Harry travel to the Ministry on the Underground.

Harry pays the fare on these occasions, and wizard money won't work.

Harry spends about three weeks in Diagon Alley in PoA, so he had plenty of opportunities to visit the bank and convert galleons to pounds. I consider that has done so, even if this is not specifically spelled out.

He does show up with a wristwatch in GoF, and I see two alternate theories about where he got it:

(1) He bought it in Diagon Alley with wizard money. (2) He bought it in Little Whinging with muggle money.

- - - - - - - - - -
Gemini12602 - Jul 13, 2004 9:33 pm (#112 of 135)

Just an odd though... I was reading the post talking about Krum's action figures arm. I wonder how it acted when it got ripped off. You gotta almost feel sorry the little guy lol.

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jul 14, 2004 4:54 am (#113 of 135)

On the occasions when Harry needed to use muggle money, (for the underground and for the camp site in GoF), the money was supplied by the adult wizards in the group, Hagrid or Mr. Weasley. Additionally, in book 3 after Harry storms out of the house he relates that he is lost and has no muggle money to hail a cab or a bus. He could have changed money to muggle money while he was in Diagon Alley but Fudge requested and Harry agreed to not leave Diagon Alley, so it would be useless for him to have any muggle money.

- - - - - - - - - -
Robert Dierken - Jul 14, 2004 6:39 pm (#114 of 135)

But the muggle money would be useful when he gets back to Little Whinging later (or anywhere else in muggle society).

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jul 15, 2004 4:57 am (#115 of 135)

How would it be useful? He spends his entire summer indoors where the Dursleys feed him and give him the bare needs of life. He has no muggle friends and no place of interest to go to. It would have been useful when he stormed out of the house in PoA, but that's really it.

- - - - - - - - - -
Tomoé - Jul 15, 2004 8:29 am (#116 of 135)

Back in business
If Harry had muggle money from PoA, wouldn't he spend some in the nearest convinience store to buy food instead of begging his friends in GoF? Of course, owl post is more discret than coming home with a bag of food, so I'm not sure that argument held any water. ^_^

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Jul 15, 2004 9:42 am (#117 of 135)

There is also the argument that they didn't let Harry out very much that summer. If he could have he would have probably left almost all day and come back only to sleep. But he was always up and hiding in his room. Or being shut away in his room. And if he did have some money whould he take the underground or a cab, or bus to get to London as opposed to always asking the Dursleys? No matter how much money I didn't have, I would do all that I could to avoid asking them for favors, especially if it involves spending any amount of time shut in a car with them. I still fail to see why he would have any muggle money for the short time that he is home, or when he would have gotten it.

Hey! I'm new here, and I just remembered. They need dragon hide gloves for herbology. Furthermore from the first year list, there was also those plain black pointed hats, 1 set of glass phials, a telescope, and 1 set of brass scales. Oh yeah, probably some wizard money too.

- - - - - - - - - -
NYCNomad - Aug 1, 2004 7:15 am (#119 of 135)

Thanks for the input, I thought I had dragon hide gloves, but regardless, I just counted all that under "standard school supplies" Things that every student has and needs. We thought about including how many pairs of socks and jeans, t-shirts, ect, but really I was looking for things that might come back as important later in the series.

Two more items which Harry received out of the Christmas crackers:

(1) Pack of non-explodable, luminous balloons.

(2) Grow-Your-Own-Warts kit.

I don't know whether he would still have these, but there are also some number of items from the crackers that were not named.

hmmm...I'd love to see more scenes of the photo album(or any photoes). It's always the good resource of knowing the new characters and ...after OoP,maybe Harry'd spend some time with it.

I'm posting today because by next weekend, with no additional post, this thread would have met its mulcher. Maybe we have compiled an exhaustive list of the first five books and there is nothing more to say, BUT... I'd really like to have a final, nicely formatted list to save.

If we are done here, I'd like to email the forum hosts to see if they could condense this thread and save a listing. But before I do, I thought I'd ask: is the list by popkin on June 15 the most complete list available? And has anyone kept up with additions since then?

Rerun on the muggle money point:

Before the Knight Bus comes, Harry has no muggle money, and thus cannot take muggle transport to escape from Little Whinging. This leaves him with the motive for getting some to put in his trunk for future emergencies.

After Harry gets to Diagon Alley, he spends about two weeks there, and so has the opportunity to exchange some wizard money for muggle money.

I think that it is logical that Harry would have seized the opportunity to put some muggle money into his trunk.

left-over B-day cake ... hmm how old can it get? I mean ... since GoF ... cause Harry didn't get cakes in OoP ... that's two years already ... Harry will sure be about to teach it some trick ... I mean ... after two years ... a B-cake is almost alive ... I mean ... Yeurk

I don't figure Harry has any birthday cake left, but that he often has some sort of food on hand. Birthday cake was just an example of the type of food he sometimes has.

Harry had a cold weather cloak...not much is described about it. He wished he had it when he went to Hogsmeade and it was cold.

I saw under the presents that the list has Dobby's socks that he gave Harry. I think we should add that they were mismatched and they had snitches on them. I think there is a remark from Moody (Barty Crouch) about them during the Filch/Snape/Moody/Egg Scene.

There was also a manual with the Servicing Kit. He was reciting it during Aunt Marge's visit, whenever she angered him.

He also has a school bag to carry all of his school books.

What ever happened to the pieces of the Nimbus 2000. He did not want to get rid of them in the infirmary.

What ever happened to his shamrock pin he bought at the World Cup?

Methinks Harry is soon going to need a bigger trunk. :-)

Either that or there is a lump in the middle of his bedroom at Private Drive under the floorboards. Perhaps the old cakes are still there.

Another possible item: A hairpin. (Unless he keeps it clipped to his robe, but he might have several of them.)

In CoS, George unlocks the bedroom door and closet door at Number 4 by picking the locks with a hairpin.

In PoA, Harry unlocks the closet to get his trunk before he runs away, probably by picking the lock.

"Methinks Harry is soon going to need a bigger trunk. :-)"

Why not simply put an enchantment on the trunk to make it bigger on the inside, like Mr Weasly did with the Fold Anglia?

Or divide it into compartments like the one Mad Eye was kept in...

co-Host with Steve on the Lexicon Forum, but he has the final say as the Owner!
I have given this thread temporary permanent status sso that our editors can reduce the posts to a list of what was in Harry's Trunk.
