6. Does it belong to a student? No.
7. Is it something owned by a Muggle? No.
8. Is is seen at #4 Privet Drive? No.
9. Could it fit into a Hogwarts book bag? Perhaps, If a 'Hogwarts' book bag is similar in size and characteristic to a Muggle one, then I suppose this object could fit into it.

27. Aunt Muriel's tiara? No, see Q #16.
28. Is it Xeno Lovegood's pendant, shaped like a circle within a triangle, bisected by a vertical line? No...* * * (Edit: see Q #20.)

34. Is it Xeno's robes (which were an "eye watering shade of egg yolk yellow") at the wedding? YES!!! Congrats, freshwater!

From Update #23: Looks like this object only left an impression on me!
I'm hoping the meaning of these symbols (Yes!* * *
and ... ) can be inferred when considering the 5 questions they're connected to.

Update #24: Xeno's robe made an impression on me expressly because of the way JKR described it, as freshwater included in her guess, as an "eye watering shade..." I LOVED that!

freshwater, you were so close before, with Q's #28 and #31! Now, on to your puzzle!

2. Is it said in an even-numbered book? No, it is not.
3. Is it found in a book with "of" in the title? No.

9. Is this quote found somewhere in chapters 19 through and including 27 of DH? No, it is not.
10. Is it said by a student? Yes, one of the speakers is a student in the series.
11. Is this quote found in the last 5 chapters of DH, from 33 to the Epilogue, inclusive? No....it's a bit earlier.
12. Is one of the Trio the speaker? YES!
13. Does a teacher say it? No, no teachers here....
14. Is it said in real time in the book? Yes, it is.
15. Is this quote uttered after the Trio reach the RoR? Yes, it is.
16. Is it said in a confidential conversation among the Trio, as opposed to something one of them says to someone else? No, this is not spoken among the Trio.

21. Is it Harry talking to Tonks about Teddy being at his Grandmothers and how she wanted to find Remus? Good guess, but no, it is not this exchange.
22. Does Harry utter this quote at the same time as the other speaker(s), i.e. do they say the same words simultaneously? No, that doesn't happen here.
23. Is it the conversation Harry has with Aberforth about keeping some Slytherin students hostage? No, not Harry and Aberforth.
24. Is it when Harry and Mrs. Longbottom chat in the RoR about where Neville is? YES!!! You've got it, PAH!

It's my favorite quote in all of DH....after years of Gran browbeating and demeaning Neville, she asks where he is. Harry responds, "He's out fighting." And Gran answers, "Naturally. Excuse me, but I must go assist him." Can't you just HEAR her imperious tone of voice! Also, I LOVE the implication that his Gran expected great things of him and now has respect for the man he's become.

But I absolutely stand corrected about the inaccuracy of my explanation about why Doge was out of the running. That's what I get for not doing a thorough check. Thanks for all the proof!

freshwater - Aug 1, 2010 7:02 pm (#1591 of 2879)

1. Is it an object? Yes, it is.
2. Is it in an odd-numbered book? Yes, but not only...
3. Is it magical? Yes, it is.
4. Does it appear in consecutive books? Yes.
5. Does it appear in all of the books? No, I don't believe that it does...the Lexicon shows references to it in only two books, but that may not be complete yet....
6. Is it owned by a student? No, not by a student.
7. Is it owned/used by a teacher? Ownership is never established for most of these items, but the implication is that it/they are used by most wizards/witches.
8. Does this object have anything to do with traveling. No.
9. Do we see it in book 6? No, I don't believe so.
10. Do we see it in book 4? I am afraid that I have chosen an item that is difficult to track throughout the series....the Lexicon mentions it as appearing in only CoS and PoA, but it is very possible that the Lexicon is incomplete in its entries about this item. I am sorry that I cannot answer more specifically, so felt I should be open that this line of questioning will not be helpful. Perhaps questions about size/location/use/etc.....?
11. Is it small enough to fit into a regular person's pocket? No.
12. Is a single one of these items usually used by several wizards/witches? Yes. **good question, Julia! **
13. Does Harry use this object? Yes, he does.
14. Is it one of the magical mirrors we see? Yes, it is! Can you be a bit more specific?
15. Do we see it in the Weasley house? Yes, one it seen/used there.
16. Is it the mirror over the Weasleys' mantel that told him to "Tuck in your shirt, Scruffy"? YES! Actually I was thinking of all the talking mirrors, but we would have been better off if I'd narrowed my topic....well done, Solitaire!

I solemnly swear that the next time I have 20 questions I will select something with a specific owner!

1. Is it a person? No.
2. Is it magical? No, I don't think so.
3. Is it an object? Yes.
4. Is it seen in more than one book? No.
5. Do we see this non-magical object in a book with "of" in the title? Yes, we do!
6. Do we see it in an even numbered book? Yes.
7. Is it in CoS? No.
8. Is this object owned by a student? No.
9. Is this object owned by a witch or wizard (as opposed to a Muggle)? Hm. I wish you had phrased that question differently. I will simply say ... no, it is not owned by a witch or wizard.
10. Is this object "owned" by any one individual? I'm not sure owned is the proper word. Let me say it is only utilized by one individual.
11. Is it utilized by a staff member (of any magical school)? No, not by a staff member.
12. Does the person who utilizes this object live (predominately) in the magical world? Yes, the one we see using this particular thing lives in the magical world.
13. Is it bigger than a bread box? Not in its original form ... and I realize that is very vague. I can only say that it is something that is "transformed" (well, changed a bit, anyway) when it is used--and it is not transformed by magic. I still do not think it would be as big as a bread box.
14. Is it an animal? No.
15. Is the object used by a squib? No, not by a squib ... but I think you may be on the right track. It isn't used by a witch or wizard
16. Is this object used by a magical being? Yes, it is, Julia!
17. Is it a plant? No, sorry, Maria.
18. Is this object used by a male magical being? Yes.
19. Is the male magical being who uses this object a house-elf? Alas, no ... but I think that brings you closer to the "one" who is "using" it.
20. Is the object Dobby's tea cosy? No, sorry.
21. Is the magical being non-human? Yes!
22. Is the magical being a merman? No.
23. Is the being a Centaur? Alas, no.
24. Do we see this magical being at the QWC? No.
25. Is this object used regularly by the magical being? No, I think we only see it the one time.
26. Is the magical being a Leprechaun? No.
27. Is the magical being a goblin? No ... but why don't you look through the magical beings and see which OBVIOUS ones have been omitted? (Checking myself, just to make sure I haven't missed it!)
28. Do we see this being and this object at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Yes, Julia, we certainly do![/b]
29. Is it found in COMC e.g. a Niffler? No, sorry.
30. Is the non-human being that uses this non-magical object in GF smaller than human sized? I don't know, John. We aren't given any idea of size, but given the "being," I would guess it would be a sort of human size.
31. Was the non-magical object used by Peeves? YES!!!
32. So ... is it a balloon that Peeves turned into a water bomb? YES!!! It is indeed the red, water-filled balloons that Peeves hurls at the kids upon their arrival (in a rainstorm) at Hogwarts. Congratulations, Julia! The next game is yours!

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the final question, the winner's name, and the answer.

Elanor - Aug 30, 2010 6:06 am (#1837 of 2881)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 30, 2010 7:15 am

2. Is it a place? No
3. Is it a tangible, touchable object? No
4. Is it seen in more than one book? No
5. Is it something that has been enchanted or had a spell put on it? No
6. Is it a person? No
7. Is it an abstract thing or concept? I'd say yes, it is, although I am not sure thinking of it as an "abstract thing or concept" will put you on the right track.
8. Is it the number 7? No
9. Is it the result of some artistic or scientific activity? No but there is an artistic or scientific (you need to pick one ) dimension to it.
10. Is it a spell? No
11. Is it connected with alchemy? No(Well, to me, there is an alchemical meaning to it but it is not alchemical in itself, the way Nicolas Flamel would be for example).
12. Is this 'somewhat' abstract thing or concept first mentioned in a book with 'of' in the title? Yes[/b]
13. Is this thing Dark (evil)? No
14. Is it a password to something (a common room, office, etc.)? No
15. Is this an action taken towards/against someone? I'd say yes, in a way, but only to part of the question
16. Is this 'somewhat' abstract thing or concept first mentioned in an even-numbered book? Yes (Not "first mentioned" btw: it is in one book only).
17. Is this 'somewhat' abstract thing or concept only mentioned in CoS? Yes
18. Is this abstract thing connected in some way with making a potion? No

23. Is this 'somewhat' abstract thing first mentioned in one of CoS' odd-numbered chapters? No
24. Is this 'somewhat' abstract thing first mentioned in chapter 6? No
25. Is this 'somewhat' abstract thing first mentioned at the Burrow? No
26. Is it an event? Yes!

28. Is Flourish and Blotts the setting in which this event is mentioned/occurs? No (Pstt.. Don't forget question 21 )
29. Is a classroom within Hogwarts castle the setting for this event (as opposed to a greenhouse? No (as far as I know)
30. Are the ghosts involved in the event? Yes
31. Is it an event that we do not actually see happen? No, we see it happen.
32. Is it Nick's Deathday Party? Yes, it is!

Congratulations Julia! The next game is yours!

I really had some trouble answering the first question that was asked: a party in itself is not magical however that kind of party implies magic in the first place, for one to be able to have a "deathday party". I hope my answer to that question wasn't too confusing.

Edited to insert the explanatory comments posted after the game ended.

Congratulations Julia, it was indeed Gabrielle Delacour!

I was a bit unsure about what to answer to question 9: Gabrielle is too young to be a Beauxbatons student (even in the DH she is 11 so barely old enough to attend) and we don't know if she was a pupil in a primary school anywhere so I just hoped my answer wouldn't be misleading.

Looking forward to your game Julia!
