Post  Potteraholic Sat Mar 26, 2011 10:37 pm

rcs - Nov 3, 2008 11:46 am (#277 of 2993)

1. Is it a living being? No.
2. Is it an object? Yes.
3. Does it live or stand around at Hogwarts? Yes.
4. Is he, she, or it magical? Yes, presumably.
5. Can it talk? No, probably not (can one take anything for granted at Hogwarts?).
6. Does it appear in the story as more than a passing reference (i.e. is there a storyline attached to it)? Yes and No. It figures in a storyline, but only in passing (I hope that makes sense).
7. Is any part of it made of metal? Not enough information given in the books to determine that. (Sorry!)
8. Did it belong to one of the four original founders? No.
9. Does it belong to one of the Hogwarts staff members? No.
10. Does it belong to a student? No.
11. Is it mentioned in one of the first three books? Yes.
12. Is it bigger than a student? Not known for sure, but probably not.
13. Is it found in the hallways? Yes.
14. Is it commonly used during a specific class? No.
15. Is it made of stone? Not as far as we know.
16. Is it a portrait? No, but you're on the right track.
17. Is it the statue of the humpbacked witch that opens to the passage way to Honeyduke's? No.
18. Is it one of the hourglasses filled with jewels? No.
19. Is it the painting of Barnemus the Barmy trying to train trolls for the ballet? No.
20. Is it a suit of armour? No.
21. Is it the gargoyle that takes the password at the entrance to the Headmaster's Office? No.
22. Is it a photograph? (Like one of the moving pictures of the Daily prophet or one of Colin Creevey's?) No.
23. Is it a secret passage? No.
24. Is it one of the magical paintings that line the hallways? Yes. (I could get nitpicky about whether it's really a painting or not, but I'll let you have this one.)
25. Is it the painting of fruit outside the kitchens where you tickle the pear and it turns into a handle to open the door to the kitchens? No.
26. If it isn't exactly a painting, is it a tapestry? It's mentioned only once in canon, so we don't really know what it is (in terms of what it's made of) for sure. I said it's closest to a painting because the subjects of the Hogwarts portraits can move in and out of it.
27. Is it the map of Argyllshire on the second floor? YES!!!! And we have a winner!

SSS, you've got it! The next puzzle is yours.

Julia H. - Nov 6, 2008 1:17 pm (#342 of 2993)
Edited by Potteraholic Mar 3, 2011 9:20 pm

1. Is it a living being? Yes.
2. Is it magical? Yes.
3. Does it live in the Forbidden forest? No.
4. Is it human? Yes.
5. Is it a filthy half-breed? No.
6. Do they attend or work at Hogwarts at some point in the books? Yes and No but rather Yes.
7. Is he or she a grown-up? Yes.
8. Is this person female? Yes.
9. Is she connected with the Ministry of Magic? No.
10. Is she part of the Wizengamot? No.
11. Does she survive the Series? No.
12. Does she run around in Hogwarts at some point in the books? No.
13. Is it Lily Evans? No.
14. Is she one of the founders of Hogwarts? Yes.
15. Helena Ravenclaw? No.
16. Nymphadora Tonks? No.
17. Is it Griselda Marchbanks? No.
18. How about Bathilda Bagshot? No.
19. Helga Hufflepuff! No!
20. Rowena Ravenclaw?

Yes, rcs, the answer is Rowena Ravenclaw. Congratulations!

Let me explain why I hesitated about some of the questions:

6. Do they attend or work at Hogwarts at some point in the books? Yes and No but rather Yes.

What bothered me was "at some point in the books". We can probably say as a founder of Hogwarts, Ravenclaw "worked" at Hogwarts - but "in the books" she is only talked about. Of course, the founders' story is a part of the books but "at some point in the books" may be interpreted as "at some point in Harry's story" so I thought "Yes" would be misleading. However, "No" would have been even more misleading since everyone would have thought the answer had No direct association with Hogwarts, so I decided "Yes" was a better answer.

Then came this question:

12. Does she run around in Hogwarts at some point in the books? No.

Now, we must suppose she did "run around in Hogwarts" but this is something we really do not see "in te books" - that is why I said "No".

Does that make sense?

I look forward to the next puzzle now!

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the winner's name, the answer, and an accompanying message.

Julia H. - Nov 26, 2008 12:51 pm (#1026 of 2993)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 21, 2010 6:40 pm

1. Is it a person? No.
2. Is it a place? No.
3. Is it a spell? No.
4. Is it a thing? Yes.
5. Is it magical? Yes.
6. Does it contain anything that once came from a living thing? Yes.
7. Is it an object of dark magic? No.

9. Can you buy it in Diagon Alley? I think so.
10. Has Harry ever had direct contact with it? Yes.
11. Is it one-of-a-kind? No.
12. Regarding question 6 ... is the thing itself alive, meaning it's an animal or creature of some sort? No, not at all. It just contains something that came from something living.
13. If a penguin encountered it in a dark alley, would the penguin run? If the thing was alone in that dark alley, the penguin probably would not run. (Have you ever seen a running penguin?)
14. Can you put other things in it? (Not necessarily penguins.) Yes.
15. Is it a Cauldron? No.
16. Is this object primarily made of metal? No.
17. Do you need it for schoolwork? No. [/color]
18. Is it a creation from Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes? No.

26. Can I clarify the answer to Q6. Does Does it contain anything that once came from a living thing? Does it mean
1) A pair of nylon tights came from a living thing e.g belongs to a human.   or
2) A leather bound diary comes from a once living thing e.g a cow hide.
It is more (but not exactly) like the latter but this "something living" question may be misleading rather than helpful. Still if you want to know the answer to it, consider again my answer to Q19.
27. Is it connected to Quidditch? No, but this kind of question may be useful.
28. Hmm. Made from plant, then (like a flowering penguin shrub)? Not like a flowering penguin shrub.

35. Is the item mentioned in the first three books? Yes.
36. Is it useful for anything at all, eg do people actually buy and use it? Yes. (Although it depends on how you define "useful". Apparently, people buy it and use it.)
37. Is the item mentioned in more than one book? Yes.
38. Is it used for cleaning? No.
39. Is it in a memorable scene in the books? It depends on what you call a "memorable scene". There is one scene I consider memorable but others may not. (It is memorable enough to make me think of this thing for this puzzle. )
40. Since this object, is in a way, specifically made to contain things (from Q #25), does it have a separate top and a bottom part that snap together when shut? I'm not sure about that but even if it has a similar structure, it will not be in the usual way.
41. Is it a magical trunk like the one Mad Eye had? No. I was afraid that my answer to Q39 would not be clear. It does not close like a trunk.

43. Is this object spherical? No.
44. Is it an Invisibility Cloak? No.
45. Did the part of whatever it is that came from a "living thing" . . . come from a creature of some sort? No, it came from a plant.

post #1032:

Congratulations, Legolas!!!

I'm not going to repeat the whole long set of Qs and As now - yes, the answer to the puzzle is Christmas Crackers! (Not specifically the one the chess set came from just any cracker.)

The "see Beyond the Penguin" comment wanted to be a hint (like penguin - bird - vulture - cracker OR penguin - snow - winter - Christmas - cracker).

I did not think it would be such a difficult puzzle but I hope you had fun. Thanks for being patient and persistent, everyone!

Well done, Legolas!!!!

Edited to add Q's 76, 77, and 78 into this list, the contents of post #1032, and <*br> after each line, in order to have a complete (and shorter) record of all the Q's asked for the '20 Questions Archive'. In addition, the questions from 35 onwards had to be renumbered, since there were 2 Q #35s.
