19. Do we ever see it used at Hogwarts? O dear, Soli goes for the hard to answer questions... so No you can't use it because it doesn't work anymore but looking at it from another point of view you could say: Yes, we see it being used at Hogwarts. (To understand this better see question one).

Additional note by legolas returns: By the magical tap I meant the one that was engraved and opened up when told to open in Parseltongue.
25. Is it a piece of furniture? Yes, I think? (depends on your definition of furniture??)

In that case we have a winner ::"""'''';;; < I was never really good in making abbyfetti. (I thought you were maybe thinking about the taps in the prefects’ bathroom.)

The complete answer was: The sink that is the secret entrance to the Chamber of Secrets!
The tap is broken, so you can't use it. But if you hiss and sliss to it, you can use it as a doorway to dark and dreary tunnels...

Legolas: Take it away!

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the winner's name, the answer, and an accompanying message.

Legolas, your guesses are so close to the answer that I've decided to hand the puzzle baton to you. The answer is the Veela hair (not the wand itself).

13. Does it belong to somebody in Harry's dorm? Yes, when we first see it.

HINT: knowing which Weasley had owned it would be a huge hint!

28. Is it the watch Harry receives from the Weasleys for his 17th birthday?

Yes, Julia, you've got it! I was thinking of Fabian Prewett's watch that Molly Weasley gave to Harry for his 17th birthday in DH.

1. Is it a person? No.
2. Is it an object? No.
3. Is it a spell? No.
4. Is it a place? No.
5. Is it magical? I would say yes. (Others might say no.)
6. Is it a magical creature? No.
7. Is it an abstract concept? Yes.
8. Is it studied at the MOM? No, or at least I don't know about it.
9. Is it something like apparition? No, it is not a form of magic. It is "magical" only as a concept in the wizarding world.
10. Is it the concept of Legilimency? No.
11. Is it Prophecy? No.
12. Is it the idea that the wand chooses the wizard and that mastery of a wand can be transferred from one wizard to another? No.
13. Does this magical concept feature in all seven books? Yes.
14. Is this magical concept utilized by Harry at any point? Yes, in a way.
15. Given the discussion on one of the other threads ... is it love? No.
16. Is this concept ever discussed in a school subject at Hogwarts? Not in but in connection with a school subject.
17. Does this magical concept have anything to do with a sense of superiority over others? No.
18. Is it used in connection with Divination? No...
19. Does it also exist in the Muggle world? No, and that is one of the reasons why I classified it as a "magical" concept.
20. Is it magic itself? No.
21. Its not something like always trying to fight against Dark Magic to prevent it taking over? No, it is not quite as abstract as that. It is a concept specifically mentioned and discussed in the books.
22. is it invisibility? No.
23. Has one of the Professors ever discussed this particular concept in his or her class? Broadly speaking, yes.
24. Is the concept especially connected with a certain person? With several persons. Hm... perhaps more with some of them than with the others...
25. Is the concept featured in a school book? No.
26. (After reading your answer to question 16) Is it used in connection with the Potions class? No...
27. In connection with DADA? Yes!
28. Is there a simple one-word-expression for this concept? No.
29. Is it a normal muggle word or is the term only used in the magical community? (i.e. did Rowling make it up?) This term does not exist in the Muggle world but similar terms do. The words in it were not invented by Rowling.
30. Are there more than 3 words used to name this concept that has a connection with DADA? Yes, when we pronounce the full name of the concept.
(Hint!)
31. Is it "Constant Vigilance"? No, unfortunately.
32. It isn't perhaps "The wand chooses the wizard"? No. It is more closely connected with DADA.
33. How about the Curse that failed? No. It is more closely connected with DADA.
34. How about the Unforgivable Curses-AK, Cruciatus and Imperious? No. It is not part of what is normally taught in DADA-classes.
35. Is it (also?) discussed in transfiguration? No, not in Transfiguration, at least I don't think so. (The concept is discussed quite a few times in the books, not only in classes, but I don't think it is mentioned in Transfiguration.)
36. It is the Patronus charm? No, it is not a form of magic.
37. Is it Dark Magic? No, it is not a form of magic.
38. Does it have something to do with lycantrophy? No, not directly, but indirectly yes: On the one hand, the concept is strongly related to DADA, which has something to do with lycantrophy, and, on the other hand, the concept is also related to a certain person who "has something to do" with lycantrophy.
39. Has it something to do with blood status? No.
40. Is it Remus Lupin as a Werewolf? No.
41. Does it have something to do with an ethical concept, like for example "to do what's right, not what's easy"? (Not necessarily that one, just as an example.) No.

Hint: It has everything to do with the DADA subject and with Hogwarts.

42. Production of the Wolfsbane potion? No.
43. Is it the idea of Defense Against the Dark Arts?
44. When it is pronounced in full, is it more than six words?
45. Is it the prejudice/rivalries among various magical creatures (werewolves, goblins, wizards, centaurs, house elves, etc.)?
46. Is it that no one lasts at the DADA teaching position 'cause it's cursed?

OK. I declare MAMS the winner. The concept I was thinking of was the DADA teaching position (the job) itself, but you all were absolutely determined to guess much more interesting concepts and since MAMS actually mentioned the DADA teaching position in her guess, I take the opportunity to end this puzzle so you can start a new one. Congratulations, MAMS, and everyone for all those wonderful guesses!

(BTW, the DADA job was discussed by Dumbledore in one of his "classes" with Harry, and it was also discussed briefly in a Potions class between Snape and Umbridge. I said Harry utilized the concept "in some way" because he took over the tasks going with the position (if not the position itself) in OotP.)

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 15, 2009 10:25 am (#2977 of 2993)

Forget if I'm supposed to do a summary...

1. Is it an object? Yes.
2. Is it magical? The short answer is Yes. The long answer is there’s a possibility it was merely an object containing something magical.
The potion is definitely magic; the basin possibly a regular object.
3. Is it related to Dark Magic? Yup.
4. Does this object appear in more than one book? We see it in one book and it is referred to in a second book.
It appears in HBP; Kreacher recounts his story in DH.
5. Is the object a common one...such as a quill, cauldron or locket? Yes, I’d say it is not an exotic object.
This was a tough one as it was said to resemble the Pensieve which I would consider “exotic” yet there were no runic markings, etc., mentioned so I figured it was just a stone basin.
6. Has Harry been in direct contact with it? Yes.
7. Is it made of paper? No.
8. Does it belong to a student? No.
9. Is it a Horcrux? No.
10. Is it made of wood? No.
11. Was it sold by Borgin and Burkes? No.
12. Does it belong to a Hogwarts professor? No.
13. Do we see this object in the first 3 books? No.
14. Do we see this object in the last 2 books? Yes.
15. Could you put it in your pocket? No, but Grawp could (and possibly Hagrid if he is indeed twice as tall as a man and five times as wide).
16. Does this object cause harm to anyone? Yes.
17. Does the object belong to a member of the Order? No.
18. Do we see it in the possession of a DE? No is the short answer. The long answer is it is not in the possession of anyone and we never “see” it with a DE... We only hear of Regulus’s experience at the Cave, we never “see” it.
19. Can we find this object in someone's home? No.
20. Does it harm a student? No.
21. Does it harm a member of the Order? Yes.
22. Is this object deadly, as opposed to simply harmful? No…
Technically the Inferi are what kill.

Post  Potteraholic Sun Mar 27, 2011 5:52 pm

Elanor - Apr 12, 2009 8:34 pm (#294 of 2994)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 25, 2009 9:17 am

1. Is it a person? No
2. Is it magical? No
3. Is it a thing? In itself, it is not. However it can become one.
4. Is it in the first three books? No
5. Is it/he/she in the last 3 books? Yes
6. Is it in all of the last three books? No
7. Is it alive? No
8. Is it in DH? Yes (but not only)
9. Is it some kind of entity-I am thinking about Ghosties and Ghouls and stuff like that? No
10. Is it also in HBP? No
11. Is it a concept ... like love? No (although this idea might put you on the right track)
12. Is it an object or part of an object? No. (I'm sorry, I can't explain more without giving the answer away. It is not an object yet somehow it can become part of an object.)
13. Is it the Soul-bit that goes into a Horcrux? No
14. Is it the anger Harry feels against Dumbledore? No
15. Does it go into or come out of the pensieve? No
16. Is it in GoF? No
17. Is it some kind of material? No
18. Is it thoughts of some kind? Well, it all depends on the definition of "thought". There is one meaning of the word that may be close enough to fit (not the first meaning of it though).
19. Is it visible for wizards? Let's say that in the scenes it appears it is visible. However, in itself, it is not something material.
20. Would it be the thoughts that attack Ron, both in the brain room and from the locket? No, it's not that kind of thoughts. However this is a brilliant idea for a future 20 questions game.
21. Is it what Harry sees when he is reading Voldemort's thoughts while inside Nagini? No
22. Is it the voice in the Ravenclaw Tower door that asks you a question? No
23. Is it the prophecy? No
24. Is this nonmaterial thing something that concerns (or affects, or interacts with) someone other than Harry? Yes (although he is the one seeing it in the scenes mentioned in question 19)
25. Does this non-thing become a thing as a result of a spell or incantation? I guess it could, and it probably did in the present case, but it doesn't have to. (like one doesn't need magic to wash the dishes but that doesn't mean it can't be done magically and, if it's at the Burrow, it is then probable it is done by magic)
26. Does it interact with an adult? Edit: (Or does an adult interact with it?) When we first see it, yes. But in itself it concerns more a group than one person.
27. Is it the scar on the back of Harry's hand that says "I must not tell lies"? No, but that track of thoughts could lead you to the answer...
28. Is it connected with Umbridge? No but this kind of question may help you a lot!
29. Is this topic some sort of action or activity? No (and it is not a verb that becomes a noun either)
30. Does it have something to do with the Battle of the DoM? No
31. Is it the Dark Mark? No
32. Is it the smoky apparition that appeared over DD's little silver instrument where he said, "Yes, but divided in essence?" No
33. Do we see this thing/non-thing in different locations in the two books? No. We see it at the same location (if not at the very same place at this location)
34. Do we see it at 12GP? Yes!!!
35. Is it the horcrux in the locket? No
36. Is it the image of Moody seen at 12GP? No
37. Is it connected to Sirius in some way? Yes!
38. Is it the fragment of mirror that Harry carries with him in his moleskin pouch? No
39 bis. Is it the image of the blue Dumbledore eyes Harry sees in that fragment of mirror? No
40. Is it the communication possible via this magical mirror Sirius gave to Harry? No
41. Is it the Patronus messages that come to 12GP--in OotP to notify Order members that the kids were at the Ministry and in DH to notify the kids that the Weasleys are okay? No. the "group" is not the trio or the order (and it is not something ghost-like either).
42. Is Kreacher involved with whatever it is somehow?
43. Is the "group" the Black family?
44. Is it the Black family tree?
45. Is it the Black family motto, Toujours Pur?

It is!!!! Congratulations Soli!

A motto is not something material, yet it can be when it is written down/painted/embroidered on a family tree or crest. We see it in the OotP on the Black family tree and in the DH in Regulus's bedroom.

Next game is yours Soli!

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the winner's name, the answer, and an accompanying message.

17. Is this place actually somewhere inside the Hogwarts grounds? Yes
18. Is the place out in the open air? No
19. Is (are?) the character(s) student(s)? The character is definitely not a student!

It's your turn!

1. Is it a person? No.
2. Is it magical? Yes, I think so. I know the taps are magical, and the door must be also in order to recognize the password....and so is the mermaid window...but the whole room? This was a tough call...
3. Is it an object? No.
4. Is it purple? No....at least, not all of it! I recall some of the bubbles or waters being different colors....
5. Is it an animal? No.
6. Is it a place? YES!
7. Is it seen in more than one book? No, I don't believe so....
8. Does it ever say anything? No.
9. Is it rare? Not in the outrageously valuable sense, but in the sense of uncommon, yes.
10. Is it in London? No.
11. Do we see or hear of this place in DH? We don't see it...it may be mentioned in passing, but is not important to the story in DH.
12. Is it a residence? Not really.....no. I figure that it's the residence of the mermaid in the window....but does that make the room qualify as a residence? I decided 'no'.
13. Is it part of Hogwarts? YES!
14. Is it inside the castle? Yes.
15. Do we actually get to visit this place with a character.....? Yes, we certainly do.
16. Is it the Chamber of Secrets? No...you can cross that one off your list.
17. Do we see it in GoF? Yes.
18. Would students study in this place? Nope, not even Hermione! **smirk**
19. Do we see this place in connection with the Triwizard Tournament? YES!
20. Is it that little broom cupboard where Rita Skeeter drags Harry for an "interview"? No...excellent guess, but, no.
21. Is it the Prefects' bathroom where Harry goes to work out the clue from his Triwizard egg? Yes, you've got it, Solitaire!

2. Is it a creature? No.
3. Is it magical? No.
4. Is it a place? No.
5. Is it a spell? No.
6. Is it an object? Yes, it is.
7. Is it owned/used by a student, as opposed to an adult? It belongs to a student, yes.

10. Is it the Invisibility Cloak? No, sorry. (see #3)
11. Is the student a Gryffindor? Yes!
12. Do we see it in PS/SS? No.
13. Is it multi-coloured? No.
14. Is it something likely to be banned by Filch if he knew about it? Under normal circumstances, I doubt it would even be noticed.
15. Is the student it belongs to a male? Yes. Sorry, Shepherdess. I was at school and began working on the post before you ever posted. Since I didn't have my "sticky" at school, I had to go into the "source" so as to not have to totally reformat things all over again. Once I submitted it, I don't think I checked again, as I was busy with kids by that time. Again, sorry!
16. Does it move on its own in any way? No. (see #3)
17. You said "under normal circumstances", does it mean we see it under "special/unusual" circumstances? Yes. Additional information: This mundane thing only becomes important because of something that is happening at the time.
18. Does more than one person have an object of that kind? Well, we do not hear about anyone else having such a thing, but it is certainly nothing special in itself.
19. Do we see it in more than one book? We do not see the thing itself again ... although it is "connected" to something that occurs in all of the books.
20. Does it belong to Harry? No.
21. Is it an item of clothing? No.
22. Is it bought in a shop? No.
23. Is it a pair of Uncle Vernon's socks? LOL Nope!
24. Does this object belong to Ron? No.
25. Do we see this thing in Harry's dormitory? Well, it does start there, although we do not see it; we hear about it plenty, though.
26. Is it the list of passwords that Neville loses in PoA? YES, it is!! Congratulations!

1. Is it magical? Yes.
2. Is it a witch or wizard? Yes.
3. Is it an object? No.
4. Is it related to the Dark Arts? Almost certainly "no".
5. Is this a male? No.
6. Is this magical person an adult? Yes.
7. Do we see him/her in more than one book? No, she is in only one book, I believe.
8. Is she a member of Hogwart's staff? No.
9. Is it Amelia Bones? No.
10. Does she work in Diagon Alley? Not work....no.
11. Do we see this witch actually perform any magic. No.

13. Is this witch Doris Crockford, whom Harry meets in PS/SS? YES! I love her enthusiasm when meeting Harry....she keeps getting in line to shake his hand...3X!

Wow, Solitaire! Here I'd thought I'd found a truly obscure HP person and was worried that folks might get cranky about it taking so long to guess... ...guess I didn't have to worry about that!

Thanks for the tip, BTW. I don't have Mac (funny how teachers seem to buy whatever system their school district uses so as to be compatible when doing work at home!) so I don't know what a "sticky" is. But I don't retype the list each time...I've been copy/pasting from previous posts. However, the page breaks don't seem to copy so I have to add those at the end of each line....
