In Sydney, Australia we will be having a full-costume steam train ride for the launch of Half-Blood Prince, (for us it will be the morning). Like two years ago when Order of the Phoenix was released many excited children and parents will come in all variety of costumes - my daughter and I sat opposite Madam Rosmerta last time, there were lute players, fire-throwers and a snake charmer as well as the expected refreshments of pumpkin juice and chocolate frogs being sold on the train.

I love the steam train ride idea. However, I would do it on July 15th, for on July 16th, I will be holed up reading. My family already knows not to disturb me for the whole week, as I'm sure I will be reading HBP twice, as to not miss anything.

I´ll pick up my copy at 10.00 (there´s no midnight-release-party). Then I´ll send husband and kids to the zoo or the beach, get myself a some food and drink, take my favorite garden-chair, switch off my mobile and read HBP.

Lav and Fleur-de-lys, I think what Cholmondley was saying is that, if the publishers release the HBP the same way as OotP in that it goes on sale 1 minute after midnight on the 16th in England. All other countries can't sell the book till that time in England, so for me in NZ, I can't buy the book till 11am the next day our time, and in Austrailia Cholmondley won't be able to buy the book till 9am the next day her time. So they have all night to party and go on a train ride (sounds great).

I've started making costumes for my family for the pre-midnight-release party at our local children's bookstore. There'll be cake, butterbeer, and other goodies, and crafts for the kids to do. It is a children's bookstore, so the party is geared toward kids. Hopefully, at the stroke of midnight Hagrid will arrive on his motorcycle (as he did for the last release) with a case of HBP books to pass out. Like many others, I've already purchased the book, and received a ticket which will speed it into my hands. As soon as we've got the book, we'll head home.
I will probably read the first chapter to the kids that night, then send them to bed so I can read the rest (maybe - I'm not that fast) to myself while they sleep. The next day, we will continue reading out loud until the postman arrives with the second copy (from Amazon) at which time my husband will probably hole himself up in our bedroom and read it to himself. As soon as I can, I will read it at least a second, and probably a third time, but we will all have to share the two copies between the six of us.

I have just learned today that I'll probably have to spend the second half of July learning for end-of-term exams, which have most kindly been timed for the weeks following July 16th.
Still, I think I'll take a day off on- hmm... Saturday perhaps? I might do some reading... and as the new Harry Potter, which happens to be released the same day, is in English, that'll count as practice for an English exam anyway, won't it?

I am Youth Leader at my church. We have planned a Missions trip to Venezuela July 16-25!! While you guys are holed up in your bedrooms and libraries, I will be "roughing it." So I will not be able to read it until you have all probably read it twice!!

aw, well, bad luck sticky glue... thank goodness we're only 5 and a half hours ahead of GMT! Won't have to wait that long then... Just hope that the bookstore opens at half past 5 in the morning... I don't want to wait till about 10 o' clock... or I might take a job there or something, and get there at half past 5, then take the day off... *sighs* oh well...

I feel cheated a bit, I live in the US, and still have to wait until midnight *grumble grumble, but, ah well, I will be reading until my little eyes can't take it anymore!
Although it will be hard no to feel abit spiteful at five o'clock PM on the 15th, just thinking of al the forummers and other lucky folk who are already reading the long awaited book. Then again as each time zone ahead of me starts reading, but that's the 15th, on the 16th, I will be reading!!

Borders at Midnight to get my two copies - one for me, and one for my library party! I host a launch party, and we have games (Quidditch in the parking lot, Harry Potter Bingo), food etc. Lots of prizes for costumes and the games, but the best is a free copy of the new book! I make the kids work for it, though - for OP, they had to take their O.W.L.s. I'm not sure what I'll do this year!

Stomping my foot in indignation that I'll be at camp during that night, and therefore not experiencing the hype at my local bookstores. I think I asked BarnesandNoble.com to send my HBP copy to my camp, so I won't be in total denial. I plan to wear my Gathering shirt a lot this summer. No, I don't care that it's covered in black, gray, and yellow paint from painting the Into the Woods set at school a few months ago. I'm probably the only person in the world who owns a Pennsylvania 2004 Lexicon Forum Gathering T-shirt covered in paint from the set of her school play. Cool!

Don't forget though everyone gets the book at the same time. That is all countries will release the book at the same time. (1 minute past Midnight - British Summer time). So for me in Sydney, Australia it is 9am. New Zealand it is 11am and so on. I love this idea as it will be so great to sit there waiting in in line for the book knowing all your friends on the forum are waiting excitedly as well. Some at midnight, some at 1am, some at 7pm and so on. Roll on July 16!

I just pre-ordered my copy tonight from Borders. So at midnight on the 15th (hopefully) I will be picking up my book and rushing straight home to read as long as possible. Then at the family reunion on the 16th, I will desperately try not to be rude and to interact socially with family members, but I imagine that at some point I may furtively creep off in a corner somewhere to continue reading. <- (wearing sunglasses to hide the red eyes from lack of sleep the night before.....)

I'm on a training course that weekend in Christchurch, my first week there I'll be looking for the nearest bookshop to where I'm staying, that will be open on Sunday. Then I'll be waiting in line in the shop till they can sell them around 11am on sunday the 17th here in NZ. I will go stright back to our motel, to lock myself in my room to read, and try and finish it before I have to go to class on monday morning. Then I'll read it again slowly all week.

I've read in several places that HBP will be released all over the world at one minute past midnight British Time on the morning of the sixteenth, but I've also read that several people in the United States (including me) will be purchasing their books at midnight, local time, at their local bookstores. I just want to be sure that my local bookstore and I know what is going on. Can any of you clarify?

Popkin, here in the states, it won't be released until midnight of whatever time zone you are in. Scholastic is the publisher here so I don't think that it matters that UK time is ahead of us. It does sound as if those who are ahead of UK time have to wait at least until midnight UK to get their books. So, it seems that you can buy it after UK time just not before. Am I making any sense?

The 16th is my last day of a 2 month marine invertebrate course at Friday Harbor Marine labs in Washington. When I get the book depends on whether or not there will be a book store on the island or any other Harry Potter fans who want to take a midnight trip into Seattle on the 15th. The latest I will get the book will the night of the 16th or the morning of the 17th. If anyone just happens to be an invert zoologist and have done anything at Friday Harbor, I would love an answer to the book store question.

I will be eagerly waiting at home (hopefully) for my book to arrive, as it is supposed to be delivered between 9am and 5pm. If I have to work, I am going to force my mother to stay home long enough to get it. Maybe the 16th will be rainy? I don't care if it is the one rainy day we get all summer. I'm hoping that the book comes in the morning, so I don't have to wait at home all afternoon.
Oh, and after the book arrives, I will be reading it! ;-)

July 16th is my oldest daughter's 16th Birthday. I don't suppose I can ignore her all day and read.
I'm actually having her big sweet 16 party the weekend before, so hopefully I'll still get to finish it that weekend.
We will go to a midnight HBP party at Barnes and Noble to get the book the night before. It was a lot of fun last time.

Well, my celebration starts on the 15th of July, when I turn 32 at exactly 11:30pm. To celebrate the event, I will get in the car, drive 20 minutes to Borders, and be waiting outside to pick up my copy of HBP. Then all day on the 16th, I plan to celebrate my night owl abilities and read as much of HPB before I fall asleep on my book. (Working all of those overnight shifts pays off at times like this.
)

I can think of no better way to celebrate my birthday than being one of millions reading my favorite book for the first time.

I am sure my mom will hide the book so that eventhough I come home to get the book, I won't find it, she did this last time. (She want me to concentrate to my study, not a novel.) Even though my mum can't forbid me to read the book (I'm 20 years old, after all), she will probably tell me there are more important things than reading it. When OoP came out, she would knock on my door and insist I clean the kitchen, or something. I mean, I am perfectly okay with that on normal Saturdays, but neither my Mum nor my Dad seem to understand that these are not normal Saturdays... I think I should go and find a hiding place this year, just in case... maybe if I just hid in the attic?

Well, sorry if my question is stupid, but there it goes: HBP will be released on July 16th all over the world, as far as I know. On midnight. Does this mean: Everywhere on midnight local time? This would imply that Germans like me would get the book even one hour in advance to the people in the UK, for example (before any possible release press /JKR statement/ Bloomsbury party?). While some of you in the West of the USA unluckily had still to wait many hours while the Europeans would already be reading ... perhaps even posting! Or will it be midnight UK time all over the world? Or for all of Europe at least?

Miriam, I believe that the book will not be released anywhere until it is midnight in London (whatever time zone that is). Some of our Australian members have said they will not be able to get their book until 8 or 9 on Saturday morning when the book is being released in London. In the US, we have to wait until midnight our local time. Well, at least I think so. I believe the people in California won't get their books until midnight their time, but I'm not sure since I'm in the Eastern Time Zone.

12.01am 16th of July in Britain (using British Summer Time) equals 9.01am 16th July in Sydney, Asutralia (Australian Eastern Standard Time). This means we don't get the book until 9.01am.
Remember also that Scholastic holds the printing rights in the US and Bloomsbury hold the printing rights for the rest of the world. Bloomsbury appears to be very strict about the rest of the world selling HBP before HBP is released in Britain.
Using the idea in my first paragraph, you are likely to fall under Bloomsbury's edict to release it at 12.01am British Summer Time. This means bookshops in Germany/Fance etc probably won't be able to release the book until 1.01am on July 16.
My guess is that Scholastic,in the US, has its own idea of when it wants to release the book. Midnight at each time zone in the US (regardless of what time it is in British Summer time).
I've given up worrying what "time" everyone is getting the book. I just know I can't get mine until 9.01am and that I can't wait!

Miriam, I'm not sure, but I think a Bookshop in our city had a big party for children on the night before OotP was released, selling the book at midnight. My local bookstore, however, opened on 9 a.m. as it always does, for there are too few people in our community interested in the English version. (Imagine you would have to wait until November or what for the German translation to come out! Impossible!) I don't know whether they might have a midnight-release this year, though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh rememberalls. I have to work on the 16th. I have two copies on order. One adult, one childrens so I can study the potions book.
At 5pm I will get on the train home and will have to be careful that I do not miss my station. Why, because of the book I will be reading. As for reading the bath, what if the book gets wet?

If you make a board to go across the tub and keep a towel at hand it's quite easy to keep it dry, that said I would NEVER do that with a HP book, they are way to important.

I hate reading a good book that fast. I make myself read one chapter a night so I can draw it out as long as possible. Once it is read, you'll never have that pleasure again of reading it for the first time. I can't hurry that experience, it's too enjoyable.

You are far more patient than I am Choices. I bring it home after midnight and read it as fast as humanly possible, then get ready for work. I'm having a Release Party at my library, and I would be miserable if I didn't finish it before my party! Have to lord it over the kids you know.

If that is the case, I will read before and after, and probably aim for an unusually short rehearsal that day, as I am sure that many of the children will be as distracted as me!!!!

The next day, we will continue reading out loud until the postman arrives with the second copy (from Amazon) at which time my husband will probably hole himself up in our bedroom and read it to himself. As soon as I can, I will read it at least a second, and probably a third time, but we will all have to share the two copies between the six of us.

I have just learned today that I'll probably have to spend the second half of July learning for end-of-term exams, which have most kindly been timed for the weeks following July 16th.
Still, I think I'll take a day off on- hmm... Saturday perhaps? I might do some reading... and as the new Harry Potter, which happens to be released the same day, is in English, that'll count as practice for an English exam anyway, won't it?

I feel cheated a bit, I live in the US, and still have to wait until midnight *grumble grumble, but, ah well, I will be reading until my little eyes can't take it anymore!
Although it will be hard no to feel abit spiteful at five o'clock PM on the 15th, just thinking of al the forummers and other lucky folk who are already reading the long awaited book. Then again as each time zone ahead of me starts reading, but that's the 15th, on the 16th, I will be reading!!

Borders at Midnight to get my two copies - one for me, and one for my library party! I host a launch party, and we have games (Quidditch in the parking lot, Harry Potter Bingo), food etc. Lots of prizes for costumes and the games, but the best is a free copy of the new book! I make the kids work for it, though - for OP, they had to take their O.W.L.s. I'm not sure what I'll do this year!

I think I asked BarnesandNoble.com to send my HBP copy to my camp, so I won't be in total denial. I plan to wear my Gathering shirt a lot this summer. No, I don't care that it's covered in black, gray, and yellow paint from painting the Into the Woods set at school a few months ago. I'm probably the only person in the world who owns a Pennsylvania 2004 Lexicon Forum Gathering T-shirt covered in paint from the set of her school play. Cool!

Don't forget though everyone gets the book at the same time. That is all countries will release the book at the same time. (1 minute past Midnight - British Summer time). So for me in Sydney, Australia it is 9am. New Zealand it is 11am and so on. I love this idea as it will be so great to sit there waiting in in line for the book knowing all your friends on the forum are waiting excitedly as well. Some at midnight, some at 1am, some at 7pm and so on. Roll on July 16!

I'm on a training course that weekend in Christchurch, my first week there I'll be looking for the nearest bookshop to where I'm staying, that will be open on Sunday. Then I'll be waiting in line in the shop till they can sell them around 11am on sunday the 17th here in NZ. I will go stright back to our motel, to lock myself in my room to read, and try and finish it before I have to go to class on monday morning. Then I'll read it again slowly all week.

I've read in several places that HBP will be released all over the world at one minute past midnight British Time on the morning of the sixteenth, but I've also read that several people in the United States (including me) will be purchasing their books at midnight, local time, at their local bookstores. I just want to be sure that my local bookstore and I know what is going on. Can any of you clarify?

Popkin, here in the states, it won't be released until midnight of whatever time zone you are in. Scholastic is the publisher here so I don't think that it matters that UK time is ahead of us. It does sound as if those who are ahead of UK time have to wait at least until midnight UK to get their books. So, it seems that you can buy it after UK time just not before. Am I making any sense?

The 16th is my last day of a 2 month marine invertebrate course at Friday Harbor Marine labs in Washington. When I get the book depends on whether or not there will be a book store on the island or any other Harry Potter fans who want to take a midnight trip into Seattle on the 15th. The latest I will get the book will the night of the 16th or the morning of the 17th. If anyone just happens to be an invert zoologist and have done anything at Friday Harbor, I would love an answer to the book store question.

I will be eagerly waiting at home (hopefully) for my book to arrive, as it is supposed to be delivered between 9am and 5pm. If I have to work, I am going to force my mother to stay home long enough to get it. Maybe the 16th will be rainy? I don't care if it is the one rainy day we get all summer. I'm hoping that the book comes in the morning, so I don't have to wait at home all afternoon.
Oh, and after the book arrives, I will be reading it! ;-)

Well, my celebration starts on the 15th of July, when I turn 32 at exactly 11:30pm. To celebrate the event, I will get in the car, drive 20 minutes to Borders, and be waiting outside to pick up my copy of HBP. Then all day on the 16th, I plan to celebrate my night owl abilities and read as much of HPB before I fall asleep on my book. (Working all of those overnight shifts pays off at times like this.
) Hee heee... So it will be a great day indeedy! Happy Birthday to me! (and everyone else who shares the same bday celebration too
) I can think of no better way to celebrate my birthday than being one of millions reading my favorite book for the first time.

Well, sorry if my question is stupid, but there it goes: HBP will be released on July 16th all over the world, as far as I know. On midnight. Does this mean: Everywhere on midnight local time? This would imply that Germans like me would get the book even one hour in advance to the people in the UK, for example (before any possible release press /JKR statement/ Bloomsbury party?). While some of you in the West of the USA unluckily had still to wait many hours while the Europeans would already be reading ... perhaps even posting! Or will it be midnight UK time all over the world? Or for all of Europe at least?

Miriam, I believe that the book will not be released anywhere until it is midnight in London (whatever time zone that is). Some of our Australian members have said they will not be able to get their book until 8 or 9 on Saturday morning when the book is being released in London. In the US, we have to wait until midnight our local time. Well, at least I think so. I believe the people in California won't get their books until midnight their time, but I'm not sure since I'm in the Eastern Time Zone.

12.01am 16th of July in Britain (using British Summer Time) equals 9.01am 16th July in Sydney, Asutralia (Australian Eastern Standard Time). This means we don't get the book until 9.01am.
Remember also that Scholastic holds the printing rights in the US and Bloomsbury hold the printing rights for the rest of the world. Bloomsbury appears to be very strict about the rest of the world selling HBP before HBP is released in Britain.
Using the idea in my first paragraph, you are likely to fall under Bloomsbury's edict to release it at 12.01am British Summer Time. This means bookshops in Germany/Fance etc probably won't be able to release the book until 1.01am on July 16.
My guess is that Scholastic,in the US, has its own idea of when it wants to release the book. Midnight at each time zone in the US (regardless of what time it is in British Summer time).
I've given up worrying what "time" everyone is getting the book. I just know I can't get mine until 9.01am and that I can't wait!

Miriam, I'm not sure, but I think a Bookshop in our city had a big party for children on the night before OotP was released, selling the book at midnight. My local bookstore, however, opened on 9 a.m. as it always does, for there are too few people in our community interested in the English version. (Imagine you would have to wait until November or what for the German translation to come out! Impossible!) I don't know whether they might have a midnight-release this year, though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I hate reading a good book that fast. I make myself read one chapter a night so I can draw it out as long as possible. Once it is read, you'll never have that pleasure again of reading it for the first time. I can't hurry that experience, it's too enjoyable.

Liz - I read books for a living. Reviews, proof reading etc. So I speed read. But Harry Potter is different. I read it once for the broad sweep of the story. The arc. Then I read it again as a creative writing tutor and a writer (the one and only time I look at it cricitcally) then I read it for the hidden bits. So by July 23rd I will have read it at least three times, and made copius notes on what I think might be important.

Since I live in Chicago, my husband and I are going to do the Oak Park thing on the 15th. For those who don't know, Oak Park is a close suburb of Chicago that transforms its downtown into Diagon Alley during the release of a Harry Potter book. The first time they did it was for OOtP and they had several thousand more people than they expected. Their restaurants turn into the Leaky Cauldron and Three Broomsticks, their bank turns into Gringotts, they have a land-based version of Quidditch and even Wizard's Chess where people stand in as the pieces. Stands set up around the downtown area sell butterbear and pumpkin juice. I hear it's a riot and since this is the next-to-last chance we'll have to experience it...
We also have Cubs' tickets that Saturday, so I guess that's one game I won't be scoring! We HAD planned for my husband's parents to be in that weekend, but when he realized that it would conflict with the HBP's release, he called and made up some excuse. Whew!

The worst thing that could happen is that JKR gives her midnight reading, answers questions related to the book and the next morning the papers are full of it and they ruin the story for us all. I'm trying to think how I can become a hermit for a few hours. Due to the rather silly public transport service where I live I can't get to the store for midnight so I'll have to get the book the next morning. Although, if the reading is on radio, I will most definately be listening!

Well happy birthday to you and me! I ordered at the bookstore at my parents home the moment the news was released. (the bookstore in my own town is good, but has very unfriendly people).
My mums happy, because it ensures me being home at my birthday. she is also happy because the book will be released the day after my birthday and not the day before, so I will actually interact with my guests.
I am going to try to read the book slowly, which means I'm going to have to cut down on my news, my forum and my mail...
It also means I will not be able to be here for the first discussion and the first peeks on JKR.com
Sigh... maybe I have to read it fast anyway...
I don't think the bookstore will have a party, so I will just be there 9 o clock in the morning to pick up my copy (I wonder if i can choose wich version?

Talk about crazy timing! I will be in the middle of a very long martial arts test at midnight on July 16th! But, my daughter will be at our local independent bookstore (Powell's City of Books if you know Portland Oregon) and she will bring the treasure home.
Like Choices and Snuffles, we are going to try to read it slowly to savor the experience. We usually read it aloud to each other first time through and then each read it again as many times as we like. But, who knows, we may get carried away and have to blaze through!

Well, I was planning to go pick up my book from the book store at 9 a.m., head home and commence reading, but it turns out I will be going to a big open house at my husband's work place instead, but it should be fun. So the book will have to wait until evening for me to pick it up (I'll insist we drive straight to the book store afterwards).
I'd like to read it slowly, too. But I live in fear of spoilers, and don't want the end ruined because I read too slowly and accidently overhear something somewhere. There was a lot of media hype surrounding OotP, and HBP will probably be the same.

Hi Siobhan! I think you will find the English version in stores here since July 16th and I think some bookstores will have midnight parties (if you are in a big town). I have ordered the UK adult edition on amazon.fr and I believe they sell both the English and American versions, though it may takes longer to get the american one. Hope it helps and that you will have some great time here!
As for me, I hope I will receive the book on the 16th but, just in case, I will also have one put aside in a bookstore in a bigger town than mine so that I will be sure to start reading it on the 16th! I'm sure I can do with two copies of it... When I will have it (and after saying "oh my G-d!" a thousand times holding it in shaking hands), I will shut myself away in my appartment with enough chocolate at hand, disconnect phones and do as Harry in CoS, pretend I'm not here...

Last time, when OotP came out, my wife and I dressed as characters ( Fudge and McGonagall, respectively) and went to our local Borders to wait for local midnight (8 hours after British Summer Time).
I expect we will do something similar this time. I need to make sure my local costume shop has a cloak available (had to settle for black last time, they didn't have pinstripe).Then we will probably spend most of Saturday and Sunday reading chapters in succession, or out loud.

hopefully I'm going to be reading the HBP, but I went to the book shop where I made a resevation for my copy and the woman their said that they might not have HPB on July the 16th. Or they will get it delivered that day. As it's on a saturday and the shop is usually closed on sunday I'm afraid there is a chance that I will have to wait for monday. But another shopassistent told me that they might open up extra early if the book did arrive on time. Also my dad told me that we have to go and visit my granddad, because it's his birthday. But hopefully the book will be in time and they will open the shop early. It's in my holiday so I'm free. I willbe there as early as I can, buy the book, do some shopping Food etc. and go home. lock myself in my room. Make sure all my pets have enough to eat. (Anyone who has had guinea pigs, knows what they are like when it comes to food.) And read. Hopefully I will have finished it by the evening and if it's really good I will probably read it again on sunday. I will spend the rest of the week reading all the other copies to see how the books are linked. i love doing that, you always notice things you did not notice before.

I don´t know where to put it so I put it here, although it is more about what I will do BEFORE the 16th of July.
I will, have perhaps already started to, say goodbye to the HP world as it is now. Does anyone feel like me?
Of course, I am waiting with impatience for the next book, and I don´t want this to sound dramatic. But in a way, it is like saying goodbye to a certain time of your life. Even if the future is bright, you know you will never be where you are at the moment, the world will never be the same around you. The HP world will look quite different, perhaps very different at the end of book 6 (and I am not only, but also, talking about missing characters). Look, for example, at the difference of your HP-world-view before and after OoP! The view we have at the moment will never come back.

Hi Elfcat, It is a beautiful Indonesian martial art called Poekoelan. Have you heard of it? I study at a school called One With Heart in Portland, Oregon. I am excited about my test, but I wish it weren't on the HBP weekend! That's ok, though. because I am planning on reading it slowly.

Phelim McI- I used to look at the first sentance and the last sentance of book I read when I was younger. Just so I could marvel at how the author could create such an extrordinary path from the first thought to the last. However, with HBP coming out, way too much is at stake emotionally! If I flipped ahead, I would regret it for so long. Perhaps I ought to staple all the pages together and undo them one by one as I make my way through front to back. No, I'm fairly sure willpower will carry me through. Oh, I wish you hadn't said that! Now I'll be so tempted!

Hey all!
I'm planning on attending a party somewhere (haven't 100% decided where yet; there are quite a few stores staying open late near where I live but none of them seem like they're terribly enthused about it yet.) and dressing up as Tonks. Then, I will come home and read for a bit, go to bed, wake up a few hours later, read a bit more, and then go to a friend's bridal shower. I will leave the book at home because if I didn't I wouldn't participate at the shower. Luckily, it's not going to be one of those silly bridal showers where you play lots of goofy games but one where we go to Eastern Market in D.C. and do more interesting stuff. Then I will come home and if I can pry the book out of my husband's hands, read some more until I finish or fall asleep.

I'll go pick up my reserved copy at Borders. As well as the largest cup of chai they have to offer. No falling asleep for at least the first five chapters... I will NOT be in the company of any other Harry Potter enthusiasts. On the night that GoF came out, I was spending the weekend with my friend's family. She got so engrossed in the book and was completely lost to the world. When OotP came out, I was touring with a drum corps, and had no way to get ahold of the book. A few people managed to get a copy in the mail from their families. Despite how sleep-deprived we were, they managed to stay awake in the hallway reading. And they all ended up crying towards the end of the book. It was so frustrating knowing that I would have to wait months! This time, I'm just going to come straight out with it. I'll tell my boyfriend: "look, I need to go read for a little while, okay? Go... play a video game or something." Aaaaa! I can't wait!

I just realized something. I live in the netherlands, so that is central european time. If I were to go and buy the book at 0.00 on the 16th of July. By the time it is 0.00 in the United States we in Europe could have already finished it. Or be well om the way. Does anyone know how this will affect the forum. I mean you have these speedreading groups here in the NL. They finished OoP in about three hours. and in the 12 o' clock news they were telling everybody that Sirius would die and I hadn't even got to page 200. Those stupid ***** (You can fill that in any way you want it. I don't care HIHI). Is the forum going to do something about the fact that some people might not even have had time to buy the book when others have had time to finish it? Or is everyone just going to avoid the forum on the 15th and the 16th of July?

are you sure you even will get the book at midnight? As far as I know, the Netherlands are in the same time zone as Germany which means: when it is midnight here it is only 23.00 in the UK. Somebody on the forum told my that the books where nowhere to be sold before 0.00 UK time (I find this plausible). So we would get them only at 1.00 o´clock.

My husband always expects my daughter and I to read all night, so I would guess that I'll be going to church the night before, then read-read-read. And as soon as I'm done (and I've gotten some sleep), I expect I'll have to start reading the book out loud to the rest of the crew (I've read all the books to our family).

My family knows not to disturb me that day. When GoF came out, my dad and I had planned a trip to DeSmitt (home of Laura Ingells Wilder) together. I preordered the book, thinking it would be delivered later that day, and it showed up right as we were about to leave. I read the first chapter while I ate breakfast, but my dad wouldn't let me bring the book with, because it was supposed to be a day for just the two of us. I had fun, but all day I was wondering what the heck the whole Frank thing was about.
For OoP, I waited (not so) patiently for the UPS guy. I plan on doing the same next month. Except I will be skimming through the other books while I wait, because heaven only knows when the book will actually reach my door.

Yes, essie, our Hosts are very aware of this situation and will have a plan in action before the release date to allow our members to avoid "spoilers". A thread explaining what will happen will be posted on this Forum plus a line in the banner area at the top of the Forum's main page and also on the Forum page on the Lexicon shortly before July 16th.

I plan to stay completely away from the forum beginning a few days before the release until I have completed the book. It is the only sure way to avoid any spoilers. (This will be an even bigger problem when book 7 is released. I may have to go into total isolation until I finish that one.)

I dont plan to visit the forum til after I read the book.The forum is here to discuss the books and I dont see why those who have already read should have to wait to post their thoughts so..the simplest solution is to wait til after you read the book to visit the forum.Thats just my opinion of course.

I was just listening to "Padfoot returns" in GOF and imagined a thread bursting with theories about how to connect all the clues the trio tells Sirius BEFORE knowing how they are really connected. Would have been fun, wouldn´t it?

Liz - I read books for a living. Reviews, proof reading etc. So I speed read. But Harry Potter is different. I read it once for the broad sweep of the story. The arc. Then I read it again as a creative writing tutor and a writer (the one and only time I look at it cricitcally) then I read it for the hidden bits. So by July 23rd I will have read it at least three times, and made copius notes on what I think might be important.

Since I live in Chicago, my husband and I are going to do the Oak Park thing on the 15th. For those who don't know, Oak Park is a close suburb of Chicago that transforms its downtown into Diagon Alley during the release of a Harry Potter book. The first time they did it was for OOtP and they had several thousand more people than they expected. Their restaurants turn into the Leaky Cauldron and Three Broomsticks, their bank turns into Gringotts, they have a land-based version of Quidditch and even Wizard's Chess where people stand in as the pieces. Stands set up around the downtown area sell butterbear and pumpkin juice. I hear it's a riot and since this is the next-to-last chance we'll have to experience it...
We also have Cubs' tickets that Saturday, so I guess that's one game I won't be scoring! We HAD planned for my husband's parents to be in that weekend, but when he realized that it would conflict with the HBP's release, he called and made up some excuse. Whew!

I've settled down to pre-order it from Merlin's (Polish version of Amazon) but they only promise that they'd send the book by 19th so I have no hope of getting it sooner than 20th! Answering to the thread question; on 16th and the following days I'll isolate myself from civilisation until I get the book!

The worst thing that could happen is that JKR gives her midnight reading, answers questions related to the book and the next morning the papers are full of it and they ruin the story for us all. I'm trying to think how I can become a hermit for a few hours. Due to the rather silly public transport service where I live I can't get to the store for midnight so I'll have to get the book the next morning. Although, if the reading is on radio, I will most definately be listening!

Well, I was planning to go pick up my book from the book store at 9 a.m., head home and commence reading, but it turns out I will be going to a big open house at my husband's work place instead, but it should be fun. So the book will have to wait until evening for me to pick it up (I'll insist we drive straight to the book store afterwards).
I'd like to read it slowly, too. But I live in fear of spoilers, and don't want the end ruined because I read too slowly and accidently overhear something somewhere. There was a lot of media hype surrounding OotP, and HBP will probably be the same.

Hi Siobhan! I think you will find the English version in stores here since July 16th and I think some bookstores will have midnight parties (if you are in a big town). I have ordered the UK adult edition on amazon.fr and I believe they sell both the English and American versions, though it may takes longer to get the american one. Hope it helps and that you will have some great time here!
As for me, I hope I will receive the book on the 16th but, just in case, I will also have one put aside in a bookstore in a bigger town than mine so that I will be sure to start reading it on the 16th! I'm sure I can do with two copies of it... When I will have it (and after saying "oh my G-d!" a thousand times holding it in shaking hands), I will shut myself away in my appartment with enough chocolate at hand, disconnect phones and do as Harry in CoS, pretend I'm not here...

Last time, when OotP came out, my wife and I dressed as characters ( Fudge and McGonagall, respectively) and went to our local Borders to wait for local midnight (8 hours after British Summer Time).
I expect we will do something similar this time. I need to make sure my local costume shop has a cloak available (had to settle for black last time, they didn't have pinstripe).Then we will probably spend most of Saturday and Sunday reading chapters in succession, or out loud.

hopefully I'm going to be reading the HBP, but I went to the book shop where I made a resevation for my copy and the woman their said that they might not have HPB on July the 16th. Or they will get it delivered that day. As it's on a saturday and the shop is usually closed on sunday I'm afraid there is a chance that I will have to wait for monday. But another shopassistent told me that they might open up extra early if the book did arrive on time. Also my dad told me that we have to go and visit my granddad, because it's his birthday. But hopefully the book will be in time and they will open the shop early. It's in my holiday so I'm free. I willbe there as early as I can, buy the book, do some shopping Food etc. and go home. lock myself in my room. Make sure all my pets have enough to eat. (Anyone who has had guinea pigs, knows what they are like when it comes to food.) And read. Hopefully I will have finished it by the evening and if it's really good I will probably read it again on sunday. I will spend the rest of the week reading all the other copies to see how the books are linked. i love doing that, you always notice things you did not notice before.

I don´t know where to put it so I put it here, although it is more about what I will do BEFORE the 16th of July.
I will, have perhaps already started to, say goodbye to the HP world as it is now. Does anyone feel like me?
Of course, I am waiting with impatience for the next book, and I don´t want this to sound dramatic. But in a way, it is like saying goodbye to a certain time of your life. Even if the future is bright, you know you will never be where you are at the moment, the world will never be the same around you. The HP world will look quite different, perhaps very different at the end of book 6 (and I am not only, but also, talking about missing characters). Look, for example, at the difference of your HP-world-view before and after OoP! The view we have at the moment will never come back.

Hi Elfcat, It is a beautiful Indonesian martial art called Poekoelan. Have you heard of it? I study at a school called One With Heart in Portland, Oregon. I am excited about my test, but I wish it weren't on the HBP weekend! That's ok, though. because I am planning on reading it slowly.

Phelim McI- I used to look at the first sentance and the last sentance of book I read when I was younger. Just so I could marvel at how the author could create such an extrordinary path from the first thought to the last. However, with HBP coming out, way too much is at stake emotionally! If I flipped ahead, I would regret it for so long. Perhaps I ought to staple all the pages together and undo them one by one as I make my way through front to back. No, I'm fairly sure willpower will carry me through. Oh, I wish you hadn't said that! Now I'll be so tempted!

Hey all!
I'm planning on attending a party somewhere (haven't 100% decided where yet; there are quite a few stores staying open late near where I live but none of them seem like they're terribly enthused about it yet.) and dressing up as Tonks. Then, I will come home and read for a bit, go to bed, wake up a few hours later, read a bit more, and then go to a friend's bridal shower. I will leave the book at home because if I didn't I wouldn't participate at the shower. Luckily, it's not going to be one of those silly bridal showers where you play lots of goofy games but one where we go to Eastern Market in D.C. and do more interesting stuff. Then I will come home and if I can pry the book out of my husband's hands, read some more until I finish or fall asleep.

I'll go pick up my reserved copy at Borders. As well as the largest cup of chai they have to offer. No falling asleep for at least the first five chapters... I will NOT be in the company of any other Harry Potter enthusiasts. On the night that GoF came out, I was spending the weekend with my friend's family. She got so engrossed in the book and was completely lost to the world. When OotP came out, I was touring with a drum corps, and had no way to get ahold of the book. A few people managed to get a copy in the mail from their families. Despite how sleep-deprived we were, they managed to stay awake in the hallway reading. And they all ended up crying towards the end of the book. It was so frustrating knowing that I would have to wait months! This time, I'm just going to come straight out with it. I'll tell my boyfriend: "look, I need to go read for a little while, okay? Go... play a video game or something." Aaaaa! I can't wait!

I just realized something. I live in the netherlands, so that is central european time. If I were to go and buy the book at 0.00 on the 16th of July. By the time it is 0.00 in the United States we in Europe could have already finished it. Or be well om the way. Does anyone know how this will affect the forum. I mean you have these speedreading groups here in the NL. They finished OoP in about three hours. and in the 12 o' clock news they were telling everybody that Sirius would die and I hadn't even got to page 200. Those stupid ***** (You can fill that in any way you want it. I don't care HIHI). Is the forum going to do something about the fact that some people might not even have had time to buy the book when others have had time to finish it? Or is everyone just going to avoid the forum on the 15th and the 16th of July?

are you sure you even will get the book at midnight? As far as I know, the Netherlands are in the same time zone as Germany which means: when it is midnight here it is only 23.00 in the UK. Somebody on the forum told my that the books where nowhere to be sold before 0.00 UK time (I find this plausible). So we would get them only at 1.00 o´clock.

My husband always expects my daughter and I to read all night, so I would guess that I'll be going to church the night before, then read-read-read. My family knows not to disturb me that day. When GoF came out, my dad and I had planned a trip to DeSmitt (home of Laura Ingells Wilder) together. I preordered the book, thinking it would be delivered later that day, and it showed up right as we were about to leave. I read the first chapter while I ate breakfast, but my dad wouldn't let me bring the book with, because it was supposed to be a day for just the two of us. I had fun, but all day I was wondering what the heck the whole Frank thing was about.
For OoP, I waited (not so) patiently for the UPS guy. I plan on doing the same next month. Except I will be skimming through the other books while I wait, because heaven only knows when the book will actually reach my door.

I plan to stay completely away from the forum beginning a few days before the release until I have completed the book. It is the only sure way to avoid any spoilers. (This will be an even bigger problem when book 7 is released. I may have to go into total isolation until I finish that one.)

I think the chapter-by-chapter threads is a good idea. I'm so horrible at picking up clues, and it would help me pick up on some of the clues that I am sure to miss. So many of you have such wonderful theories, and pick up on clues so easily, that I would like to be able to read about it then, so I can be more perceptive to the rest of the book.

Practically perfect in every way
I will read at least three chapters from gmt midnight til I go to bed (well when hubby wrenches it out of my hands and makes me go to bed) we are then leaving in the morning for our holiday - so I dont think I will get on the forum. I hope to have the book finished by Sunday and then start the first re read, much slower. From my point of view waiting til I get back from holiday to discuss it with everyone will be sheer h***. However I think I would finish reading the first time before I came on here. But I am sure the speedreaders will be very keen to get on here to discuss - so I am pleased that the forum will keep the rules on spoiling in force.
But does this not mean that the hosts and moderators wont get a chance to read if they are watching the posts to keep the forum spolier free, from error postings????!!!! I do hope not.

I don't think anyone is going to have to worry about avoiding the forum for fear of spoilers, at least until after the book is released. The Hosts are all going to be keeping an eye open for anyone who might post a spoiler before the book is officially released (and good luck staying a member in good standing if you do), and we are considering the European time difference there.
I think it would be just fine if some members want to do a chapter by chapter read of the book as a group and I'm sure a Host will be more than willing to set those threads up if enough people want them. (Do keep in mind, though, that anyone not wanting to be spoiled at that point may want to stay on those read-along threads.)
P.S. Don't worry, the Hosts will have time to read the books too. I'm sure Kip will make an official announcement as we get closer to July 16th.

LPO, you wouldn't have to restrain yourself to one chapter, but you could check the lexicon at your leisure and read up on the chapters you have gotten through.
I can't read it all in one sitting, but I hope to be done in a couple of days. I will definitely read as much as I can in the evenings, and whenever the kids are busy occupying themselves, but if we have family functions to attend, it will make the read more difficult.
I try not to let my passion for reading keep me away from my family. If they are busying themselves with something, I will read. Otherwise, I wait until the house is quiet and plop myself on the sofa for the night.

I first started reading this forum just after reading Order of the Phoenix. Following the long wait, in spite of the extraordinary length of the book, I ached to read more Harry Potter. It was great to find the Lexicon. At that time, the spoiler warnings were still on, and remained for a very long time - as I recall we were to avoid spoilers for several months. That was good, but I'm hoping to have a place to freely discuss every aspect of HBP, too.

Me too. I think everyone will be dying to express their views on how the series will end. I mean after this book there will be only one other HP book. I think I will feel the same way when I finish book seven as I felt after I finished Lord of the Rings. So sad that we will not read more about the characters we came to love so much. The epilogue, just won't be sufficient.

As several of us also suggested on the questions for the hosts thread, I can't see how chapter threads for HBP can be so bad?!? We post about things ONLY pertaining to the specific chapter, and tying it in only with previous chapters if relevant, never about a following one. People who go into the chapter threads KNOW that each thread covers a chapter in HP Prince, and will be littered with spoilers. If something traumatic happens - (I am so worried about my Ronnie...), I need a place to go, you guys!! We have to be able to do this in a safe and practical manner!! Also - I was under the impression that the book actually is released on the strike of midnight, UK time all over the world - am I that mistaken??

It isn't released at UK time everywhere. In the US, for instance, it will be released on July 16, at midnight, even though it will have been available to UK fans for about 6 hours or so (depending on your timezone). That's why there are so many midnight release parties here in the US.
As has been said before, I don't think anyone will have to avoid the forum for fear of spoilers prior to the book's release. Kip will make an announcement with enough time to spare so that everyone knows how things will be handled.

I've always thought (okay since book 5 was released) that if the Brits and such can get it at midnight their time we should be able to get it then as well.
I live on the West Coast of the US. And if I had more money I would travel to the East Coast, far out there in Maine where it is 3 1/2 hours ahead and get a copy then. But alas. I have to wait till it's midnight here. Which is alike 9 hours after people in England get it. I mean, there will be some people who have finished the book by the time I get it! (I know, whaaaaaaaaaaa)

For those of you who were wondering about last time... Well, WX had a meltdown and we had a 'fun' time just finding each other.
I don't advise keeping the Lex spoiler-free for months and months. I'd say a few dedicated threads for a week or two or even three, then open the board. Last time people got really restless and started discussing amongst themselves in chats and on offshoot boards and such. And while camping out on the WX alternates was fun, we were all aching to come home.
Of course, I should mention that the WX meltdown was nothing to do with our hosts. The main server crashed as they tried to switch over to a new machine and it was just exceptionally bad timing for us Potterphiles, Potterheads, Potties, Fanimagi, St. Mungos inmates and whatever else we were calling ourselves at the time.

People can choose whether or not they want to just speculate based on what's happened in previous episodes or speculate based on promos for the next episode or what the producer has said in interviews, etc.
I, for one, want to go all out with talking about everything in HbP, so I hope there's going to be somewhere here that we can do just that without having to suffer endless bouts of what seems like the Cruciatus Curse. Yes, that's melodramatic, isn't it?

I know Kip intends to post something to the forum, in plenty of time before the release, to let everyone know what is going on and how things will be handled. Just be patient and focus on other threads that tickle your imagination.

I have been planning on attending the local midnight release party but was afraid that I'd be alone there and feel like a real geek! Mind you, I'd still probably go, I'd just feel stupid. I recently asked my aunt if she would let me take my younger cousins along. (I'm 32 they are 12, 12 & 15.) She said sure and they are excited to go too. I toyed with the idea of dressing up as Tonks but I think even that might be too much for their teenage egos. They want to be soooo cool. I then decided to order the "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good" T-shirt and wear that. So now I have plans, people to go with and an outfit!
I want to read to book immediately and I also want it to last forever because it will be so long before any new information comes out. I may stay away for a bit but it sounds like there will be safe areas to gather in so I may still be around just very cautious about what I'm reading. I dread the idea of someone trying to be clever or mean and blurting out a spoiler where I am accidentally reading and there, it's ruined for me. I will also avoid things like radio, TV, the Daily Show, and Best Week Ever. I don't need any mass mediated outlet telling me what I don't want to hear!

We visited out-of-town friends last week, and Mr. Pince and I invited them to reciprocate with a visit to see us sometime this summer. Guess which weekend they immediately suggested as being ideal for them? Aaaaaagh! You guessed it! Apparently he works over the weekends frequently, and it just happens that the weekend of July 16th is one weekend he is off from work, and wouldn't it just be lovely if they could come up then? I'm dyin' here!!!! We already have the family reunion that Saturday! If I end up having to play hostess, I may not get to even start reading until Monday or Tuesday! Nooooooooooo!!!!

Well, since I live in Australia, I'll be getting the book at 9:01am at my local Dymocks store. It's already paid for and they gave us a coupon with a 1/2 size image of the cover of HBP so I can sit at home studying it. I could probably read it in a day, but I'm still debating on whether to do it in one day or just a couple of chapters a day.
The bad news is I might be in Melbourne, so I'm still trying to re-arange the whole trip. I'm not sure wether the coupon will be cashed at only my local store or abroad.

On the way home on Saturday we'll stop off in Waukesha, WI to participate in a special geocaching event--A Very Harry Deal--with 20 special one-day-only caches with an HP theme.

I googled shanghai books english and found a forum, so what follows is a copy of that forum. hope it helps.
Anyone able to tell me where some good English-language bookstores are located?
Fuzhou Rd (runs parallel to East Nanjing Rd, a couple of blocks South) has a lot of bookstores. The biggest, Book City, has an impressive selection of imported titles (go up to the top floor and there's a couple of rooms of them.) The Foreign Languages Bookstore is also nearby on Fuzhou Rd and probably also has some titles of interest.
The Scholar Book store in Meiluocheng (Metro City) in Xujiahui has a much smaller collection of imports. There's another new Scholar store on Fuzhou Rd, but apparently no imports.
A lot of other book stores will have some English titles, but they are mostly confined to those older classic books (whose copyrights presumably expired long ago.) Those books have the advantage of being very cheap, I think around 15 RMB. By LeiFeng
There is a very good book store in Xujiahui. It is on Hongqiao Rd, right beside the Orient Shopping Center. I don't know the exact address, but it should be around 2-6, Hongqiao Rd. By Wangjianshuo
I found some foreign books at Jifeng bookstore (South Shanxi Rd Station,) another English bookstore in Citic Square. You can even find the latest magazines: Newsweek, the Economist, USA Today, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest... CNPIEC Bookstore, Rm 522, 1168 Nanjing West Rd, Citic Square (East of Plaza 66) By lijunj
Another google later I came across an article about online bookstores in shanghai. Apparently they had started a price war.
Similar to airfare wars, Joyo.com wasted no time in matching Dangdang's discount.
It further slashed the price to 39 yuan. It also offered buyers a free copy of the Chinese version if they purchased the 178-yuan English version.
So the article was about the english version...
Shanghai Book City, the city's largest bookshop, currently sells 200 to 300 copies daily.
The article was from 27 september 2003. The latest adventure of Harry Potter triggered an online price war after the fifth book in the series hit national bookshelves last weekend.
Order of the phoenix however was released June 21, 2003.
So it looks like Shanghai book city is her best bet, BUT she might want to mail or call to check if they will have it that day. Except the only link I could find to what might be that book store is in chinese characters only...

--*--* IMPORTANT note to moderators: I got the idea from a post in the Thread "What will you be doing in July 16th?", but could not find it again. I put this with the intention of trying to say "goodbye" to all the assumptions that have been made in the past two years (since OoP), now that the sixth book is only two weeks away of beeing sold *--*--*
A forum member, in the Thread "What will you be doing in July 16th?", posted that she was going to miss a pre-HP & Half-Blood Prince world, where we could still discuss a number of theories and assumptions. It really striked me then as true, and I was surprised when nobody picked up that comment in the thread. Indeed, many therories and posts about a huuuuuge variety of the HP universe have been posted. I believe that I'll miss a lot of the endless speculation.
But most of all, I would like to use this space to say:
THANK YOU!
- to all the lexicon members that have posted here. I could not even attempt to think of one tenth of the theories, helps and observations that were posted,
- to the moderators, for the constant work and support of this page, and I antecipate now the tanks for the future work: as the sixth book will be read, dissecated and written about.
As the next book will be read, I hope to be able to awnser lot of questions, about the characters past and future, and also to see how the next Wizard War will develop... These past two years have really built to that... now the waiting is almost over.

I think the chapter-by-chapter threads is a good idea. I'm so horrible at picking up clues, and it would help me pick up on some of the clues that I am sure to miss. So many of you have such wonderful theories, and pick up on clues so easily, that I would like to be able to read about it then, so I can be more perceptive to the rest of the book.

I will read at least three chapters from gmt midnight til I go to bed (well when hubby wrenches it out of my hands and makes me go to bed) we are then leaving in the morning for our holiday - so I dont think I will get on the forum. I hope to have the book finished by Sunday and then start the first re read, much slower. From my point of view waiting til I get back from holiday to discuss it with everyone will be sheer h***. However I think I would finish reading the first time before I came on here. But I am sure the speedreaders will be very keen to get on here to discuss - so I am pleased that the forum will keep the rules on spoiling in force.
But does this not mean that the hosts and moderators wont get a chance to read if they are watching the posts to keep the forum spolier free, from error postings????!!!! I do hope not.

I don't think anyone is going to have to worry about avoiding the forum for fear of spoilers, at least until after the book is released. The Hosts are all going to be keeping an eye open for anyone who might post a spoiler before the book is officially released (and good luck staying a member in good standing if you do), and we are considering the European time difference there.
I think it would be just fine if some members want to do a chapter by chapter read of the book as a group and I'm sure a Host will be more than willing to set those threads up if enough people want them. (Do keep in mind, though, that anyone not wanting to be spoiled at that point may want to stay on those read-along threads.)
P.S. Don't worry, the Hosts will have time to read the books too. I'm sure Kip will make an official announcement as we get closer to July 16th.

LPO, you wouldn't have to restrain yourself to one chapter, but you could check the lexicon at your leisure and read up on the chapters you have gotten through.
I can't read it all in one sitting, but I hope to be done in a couple of days. I will definitely read as much as I can in the evenings, and whenever the kids are busy occupying themselves, but if we have family functions to attend, it will make the read more difficult.
I try not to let my passion for reading keep me away from my family. If they are busying themselves with something, I will read. Otherwise, I wait until the house is quiet and plop myself on the sofa for the night.

I first started reading this forum just after reading Order of the Phoenix. Following the long wait, in spite of the extraordinary length of the book, I ached to read more Harry Potter. It was great to find the Lexicon. At that time, the spoiler warnings were still on, and remained for a very long time - as I recall we were to avoid spoilers for several months. That was good, but I'm hoping to have a place to freely discuss every aspect of HBP, too.

I think I will feel the same way when I finish book seven as I felt after I finished Lord of the Rings. So sad that we will not read more about the characters we came to love so much. As several of us also suggested on the questions for the hosts thread, I can't see how chapter threads for HBP can be so bad?!? We post about things ONLY pertaining to the specific chapter, and tying it in only with previous chapters if relevant, never about a following one. People who go into the chapter threads KNOW that each thread covers a chapter in HP Prince, and will be littered with spoilers. If something traumatic happens - (I am so worried about my Ronnie...), I need a place to go, you guys!! We have to be able to do this in a safe and practical manner!! Also - I was under the impression that the book actually is released on the strike of midnight, UK time all over the world - am I that mistaken??

It isn't released at UK time everywhere. In the US, for instance, it will be released on July 16, at midnight, even though it will have been available to UK fans for about 6 hours or so (depending on your timezone). That's why there are so many midnight release parties here in the US.
As has been said before, I don't think anyone will have to avoid the forum for fear of spoilers prior to the book's release. Kip will make an announcement with enough time to spare so that everyone knows how things will be handled.

For those of you who were wondering about last time... Well, WX had a meltdown and we had a 'fun' time just finding each other.
I don't advise keeping the Lex spoiler-free for months and months. I'd say a few dedicated threads for a week or two or even three, then open the board. Last time people got really restless and started discussing amongst themselves in chats and on offshoot boards and such. And while camping out on the WX alternates was fun, we were all aching to come home.
Of course, I should mention that the WX meltdown was nothing to do with our hosts. The main server crashed as they tried to switch over to a new machine and it was just exceptionally bad timing for us Potterphiles, Potterheads, Potties, Fanimagi, St. Mungos inmates and whatever else we were calling ourselves at the time.

Living in New Zealand, we are almost a day ahead of some of you, but we can't buy the book until midnight UK time, so that means 11am on the 17th for us. I thought the rest of you could also buy it once it hit midnight in the UK, if you can't, I would guess that it's to do with your publishers, maybe you need to put pressure on your USA publisher?

People can choose whether or not they want to just speculate based on what's happened in previous episodes or speculate based on promos for the next episode or what the producer has said in interviews, etc.
I, for one, want to go all out with talking about everything in HbP, so I hope there's going to be somewhere here that we can do just that without having to suffer endless bouts of what seems like the Cruciatus Curse. Yes, that's melodramatic, isn't it?

I somehow don't think any Host will have to be prosecuted for using an Unforgivable. We are looking at all aspects of the days surrounding the release and how things will be handled. I know Kip intends to post something to the forum, in plenty of time before the release, to let everyone know what is going on and how things will be handled. Just be patient and focus on other threads that tickle your imagination.

I have been planning on attending the local midnight release party but was afraid that I'd be alone there and feel like a real geek! Mind you, I'd still probably go, I'd just feel stupid. I recently asked my aunt if she would let me take my younger cousins along. (I'm 32 they are 12, 12 & 15.) She said sure and they are excited to go too. I toyed with the idea of dressing up as Tonks but I think even that might be too much for their teenage egos. They want to be soooo cool. I then decided to order the "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good" T-shirt and wear that. So now I have plans, people to go with and an outfit!
I want to read to book immediately and I also want it to last forever because it will be so long before any new information comes out. I may stay away for a bit but it sounds like there will be safe areas to gather in so I may still be around just very cautious about what I'm reading. I dread the idea of someone trying to be clever or mean and blurting out a spoiler where I am accidentally reading and there, it's ruined for me. I will also avoid things like radio, TV, the Daily Show, and Best Week Ever. I don't need any mass mediated outlet telling me what I don't want to hear!

Ooooo, Astragynia, I like the "dark mark" idea! You will probably get some very startled looks!
We visited out-of-town friends last week, and Mr. Pince and I invited them to reciprocate with a visit to see us sometime this summer. Guess which weekend they immediately suggested as being ideal for them? Aaaaaagh! You guessed it! Apparently he works over the weekends frequently, and it just happens that the weekend of July 16th is one weekend he is off from work, and wouldn't it just be lovely if they could come up then? I'm dyin' here!!!! We already have the family reunion that Saturday! If I end up having to play hostess, I may not get to even start reading until Monday or Tuesday! Nooooooooooo!!!!

Well, since I live in Australia, I'll be getting the book at 9:01am at my local Dymocks store. It's already paid for and they gave us a coupon with a 1/2 size image of the cover of HBP so I can sit at home studying it. I could probably read it in a day, but I'm still debating on whether to do it in one day or just a couple of chapters a day.
The bad news is I might be in Melbourne, so I'm still trying to re-arange the whole trip. I'm not sure wether the coupon will be cashed at only my local store or abroad.

Well, I work until 2:00. I have already set the alarm on my cell phone to go off every hour(it will play the harry potter theme song!) My sisters and I are going to go out to dinner, then go and watch "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" at our local theater, and then then go to Barnes & Noble at about 10:30. We will get our copies of the book at midnight, go home, and stay up well into the dawn reading!! Yes, we have this all already planned... can you say obsessed!!

My son and I will go to Oakbrook, IL on the afternoon of the 15th to experience their version of Diagon Alley. I'll dress up as Luna and my son insists on going as a Slytherin **sigh**. We'll pick up our book at a local bookstore at midnight, and then walk back to our hotel to read until we can't keep out eyes open. On the way home on Saturday we'll stop off in Waukesha, WI to participate in a special geocaching event--A Very Harry Deal--with 20 special one-day-only caches with an HP theme.

Imagine working in a bookshop from midnight selling Harry Potters to loads and loads of people and unable to catch a glimpse of the story yourself. I googled shanghai books english and found a forum, so what follows is a copy of that forum. hope it helps.
Anyone able to tell me where some good English-language bookstores are located?
Fuzhou Rd (runs parallel to East Nanjing Rd, a couple of blocks South) has a lot of bookstores. The biggest, Book City, has an impressive selection of imported titles (go up to the top floor and there's a couple of rooms of them.) The Foreign Languages Bookstore is also nearby on Fuzhou Rd and probably also has some titles of interest.
The Scholar Book store in Meiluocheng (Metro City) in Xujiahui has a much smaller collection of imports. There's another new Scholar store on Fuzhou Rd, but apparently no imports.
A lot of other book stores will have some English titles, but they are mostly confined to those older classic books (whose copyrights presumably expired long ago.) Those books have the advantage of being very cheap, I think around 15 RMB. By LeiFeng
There is a very good book store in Xujiahui. It is on Hongqiao Rd, right beside the Orient Shopping Center. I don't know the exact address, but it should be around 2-6, Hongqiao Rd. By Wangjianshuo
I found some foreign books at Jifeng bookstore (South Shanxi Rd Station,) another English bookstore in Citic Square. You can even find the latest magazines: Newsweek, the Economist, USA Today, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest... CNPIEC Bookstore, Rm 522, 1168 Nanjing West Rd, Citic Square (East of Plaza 66) By lijunj
Another google later I came across an article about online bookstores in shanghai. Apparently they had started a price war.
Similar to airfare wars, Joyo.com wasted no time in matching Dangdang's discount.
It further slashed the price to 39 yuan. It also offered buyers a free copy of the Chinese version if they purchased the 178-yuan English version.
So the article was about the english version...
Shanghai Book City, the city's largest bookshop, currently sells 200 to 300 copies daily.
The article was from 27 september 2003. The latest adventure of Harry Potter triggered an online price war after the fifth book in the series hit national bookshelves last weekend.
Order of the phoenix however was released June 21, 2003.
So it looks like Shanghai book city is her best bet, BUT she might want to mail or call to check if they will have it that day. Except the only link I could find to what might be that book store is in chinese characters only...

--*--* IMPORTANT note to moderators: I got the idea from a post in the Thread "What will you be doing in July 16th?", but could not find it again. I put this with the intention of trying to say "goodbye" to all the assumptions that have been made in the past two years (since OoP), now that the sixth book is only two weeks away of beeing sold *--*--*
A forum member, in the Thread "What will you be doing in July 16th?", posted that she was going to miss a pre-HP & Half-Blood Prince world, where we could still discuss a number of theories and assumptions. It really striked me then as true, and I was surprised when nobody picked up that comment in the thread. Indeed, many therories and posts about a huuuuuge variety of the HP universe have been posted. I believe that I'll miss a lot of the endless speculation.
But most of all, I would like to use this space to say:
THANK YOU!
- to all the lexicon members that have posted here. I could not even attempt to think of one tenth of the theories, helps and observations that were posted,
- to the moderators, for the constant work and support of this page, and I antecipate now the tanks for the future work: as the sixth book will be read, dissecated and written about.
As the next book will be read, I hope to be able to awnser lot of questions, about the characters past and future, and also to see how the next Wizard War will develop... These past two years have really built to that... now the waiting is almost over.

Originally I was having two books shipped to my home. Several weeks later, I found out we will be in FL on the 16th, so I quickly changed the delivery address to where we'll be in FL. A few weeks later, still, we figured out that we will be in LA. Now I have changed the delivery address to where we'll be in LA and I sure hope FedEx finds us! We will be visiting friends who are not wholly into HP, but we can sway their son, so I am also having a copy shipped to him. I think we will pull a late-night reading fest together! Hmm, we'll have to come up with some rules, like no discussions until we are all up to the same page. We can't wait! Thanks JKR!

I have a question to all of you:
Does anyone know if and where the release of HBP at Edinburgh castle with JKR reading from the book will be broadcasted live on radio (or broadcasted at all)? I searched the web and some radio stations for it but couldn´t find any information on it. It is only said that there will be a lot of media there, including radio and television (well, no surprise).
I would LOVE to listen to Jo reading from the new book some hours before (hopefully) holding it in my hands!

He likes the books and movies (he's only read the first one, but at least likes the story) but I didn't think he'd come out at midnight for an HP book! Yippee!!

Their next programme will air on Sunday and include highlights from the launch night as well as a JKR interview with one of the winning "cub reporters".

My daughters 16th birthday is the 16th and she wants to see "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".(She's in love with Johnny Depp) I told her it's a sign as to how much I love her that I would tear myself away from my book and take her to see this movie, and also to not ignore her all day to read.
Yesterday I had a brilliant idea. We're going to the Barnes and Noble party and it starts at six. I'm going to go at six, let the kids do the fun stuff, get my wrist band and then take the kids to the movie. We'll be back at Barnes and Noble before midnight, and it will help pass the time for me. I sure hope the movie doesn't suck!
BTW, she tried to pull the "It's my birthday, I should get to read the book first" crap. Yeah right! I love her, but there are limits!

At midnight on the 16th I will be at my local Meijer store (like a Super Wal-mart and operates in the Mid-western United States). This is the best place to buy HP books. They are generally cheaper, $14.87 advertised, and nobody realizes they will be selling the book at midnight. They don't need a special sale or party, they are generally open 24 hours a day anyway. They also have a ton of copies. For OotP, there were 10 people waiting at midnight and they had a pallet stacked 4 feet high with copies. Even if I was going to a bookstore party, I'd still buy it at Meijer. It is also closer to my house than any bookstore. So I will be home and reading my copy by 12:20 at the latest. Then I will read until about 4 am when I will take a brief sleep or a long nap (3-4 hours). Then I'll read until midnight, stopping only for bathroom breaks, to make a sandwich for lunch, and to microwave something for dinner. I might order pizza or chinese and have it delivered for dinner. Probably pizza, it is easier to eat and read (one hand on the book, one hand on the slice). And that is what I will be doing every minute of the 16th.

For any and all attending the Oak Park, Illinois fest, The Magic Tree Bookstore has updated their website to include maps and a list of the participating restaurants and a few special dishes that they'll be serving. I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the "Dragon Snot" at Salazar's (aka Fuego Loco) and will be trying every Butterbeer recipe in the 2005 Butter Beer Battle.

Oh, my! Well, my plans have changed considerably. Now I'm going to go pick up my fourteen year old non Harry fan sister and take her on an eight and a half hour road trip to Nashville.
She's never really been out of state and so I figure I'll be entertaining her for the next week.
My plan to shorten the amount of Harry-less time is to drive to pick her up on Friday (I live in Nashville), and then I'll try to leave as early as I can on Saturday. I still probably won't make it home before 4 pm. I hope sis will be tired and I might have a few hours to read before I fall asleep too. Then again, maybe not.

So therefore Denise will be done with all her laundry and have finished HBP in time to prepare Saturday's lunch for nine people. And then she will start walking around on the surface of her pool.
I'm still not definite -- it sounds like Mr. Pince is going to get off work early Friday so he will not be able to pick up my book on his way home because it will be before midnight. So I'll probably have to see if I can talk everyone into stopping by the mall Saturday on the way to the family reunion, so that I can pick it up then. If not, then on the way back from the reunion. Worst case scenario, I'll have the book by around 6pm Saturday. After a quick glance at the titles and endpaper blurbs, I'll do the "nice hostess" thing for the evening, then sit up on the couch and read until I can't read anymore. Then I'll make breakfast and be "nice hostess" again, and will read whenever I possibly have a break. The sad thing is that it might not be until everybody goes to bed Sunday night. Then the guests will leave Monday noon-ish, Mr. Pince will go to work, Baby Pince will be in school, and I'll finally have the house to myself. Bwaha-ha-ha.

ADVANCED POTION MAKING
does this mean that Harry has passed his potion OWL and is now doing NEWT standard potions?
By the way what would you do if you walked into a bookstore today and find that they were already selling HBP.
Would you:
Buy the book, but bring it back to the publisher after you found out that the bookstore was in the wrong. Knowing that you will get a copy signed by JKR, even when you have not read it at all.
Buy it and after finding out the mistake of the bookstore. read it and then bring it back
Buy it but not bring it back
Not buy it at all but wait untill the 16th.

This discussion probably belongs on the HP6: The Half Blood Prince thread near the top. But in answer to your question, I wouldn't buy it until the 16th because if I saw the book in a store I'd know immediately that they were selling it illegally and I'd probably be asked for it back anyway. I'd pick up a copy, take it to the checkout and say, "This isn't supposed to be being sold until the 16th." Then I'd tell them about the other bookstores who sold it early and were contacted by the publishers, and see if they grow nervous. Besides, it's not long now until!

LOL Coolbeans. You are a true fan. I am going to get two copies. That way Mr. Ludicrous can have one of his own. I am a Middle School Librarian (first, second and third years) so I'll donate one copy to my school. Sadly many young people will not be able to get to read HBP till school starts. I've been encouraging my friends to buy two copies and donate one to my library! The first day of school I want to have as many copies as I can to check out to the students! LPO

I have a book waiting for me at the library (I'll by a copy in a week or so). I have the delicious prospect of a weekend with NO PLANS, meaning no getting together with friends, no dinners out, no must-see movies, no heavy-duty chores or errands. So, I can lay about both days and read to my heart's content. Will I finish? Maybe. I'm a fast reader but my eyes get tired much more quickly than they did when I was younger, so who knows how much stamina I'll have. I don't honestly remember how long it took me to finish OoP, but this book is almost 200 pages shorter.
My son has a copy reserved, too. We have made a pact not to talk to each other unless it's about something that we've both read already. I think I'm a faster reader than he is, but he probably has more stamina. Could be a very quite weekend at our house, since my husband is re-reading OoP to get ready and will read HBP after that. He's a slow reader. Golly, Jordan and I won't be able to talk to him at all. Oh, dear....

Well......I ordered my copy from Amazon, to be delivered by the Royal Mail. I was confident, as our post gets delivered between 9-9.30 each morning. The time came and went, I was pacing up and down by the upstairs bedroom window, peering into the street. Hubby laughing that I maybe I wouldn't get it delivered until the Monday!!. Finally at 11.20am (yes, that late!!!) I saw the post van and flew down the stairs into the street to acost the postie!
I tried idle chit chat while waiting for her to rummage in the van. I happened to mention that she was later than usual. She snarled at me that she had lots of extra post because of the damn Harry Potter book that everyone seemed to have ordered! "Anything in perticualar you are waiting for?" she asked me, I sort of whispered that I was expecting a parcel from Amazon, she gave me a glare, shoved the parcel in my arms and I gave a nervous smile and ran quickly to my room where I stayed most of the day, reading and eating a massive bag of Jelly Babies!!!

Was a leader on cub camp last weekend. Thankfully we made a mistake with the dates. We should have been at the campsite (miles from anywhere) from 15th to 17th July. RELIEF. I can get the book and read it, and not have to wait till Monday 18th.

Originally I was having two books shipped to my home. Several weeks later, I found out we will be in FL on the 16th, so I quickly changed the delivery address to where we'll be in FL. A few weeks later, still, we figured out that we will be in LA. Now I have changed the delivery address to where we'll be in LA and I sure hope FedEx finds us! We will be visiting friends who are not wholly into HP, but we can sway their son, so I am also having a copy shipped to him. I think we will pull a late-night reading fest together! Hmm, we'll have to come up with some rules, like no discussions until we are all up to the same page. We can't wait! Thanks JKR!

I have a question to all of you:
Does anyone know if and where the release of HBP at Edinburgh castle with JKR reading from the book will be broadcasted live on radio (or broadcasted at all)? I searched the web and some radio stations for it but couldn´t find any information on it. It is only said that there will be a lot of media there, including radio and television (well, no surprise).
I would LOVE to listen to Jo reading from the new book some hours before (hopefully) holding it in my hands!

Anyway, I finally decided I should post here, so… I will be going to a midnight party with:
my parents! I wasn't surprised my mom said she would come along (so I wouldn't be alone, and she kind of likes the books) but I was amazed my dad is coming too! He likes the books and movies (he's only read the first one, but at least likes the story) but I didn't think he'd come out at midnight for an HP book! Yippee!!
my best friend from camp, who I didn't know was going to the same release party as me until the first day of camp when it came up accidentally, and
my drama teacher at camp, same story as above, but for a sec I didn't think she was coming but she is!!

Miriam, check out [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ITV (British tv station) has a programme on at 11.45 to 12.10. That doesn't really sound like they'll show the reading does it?
Their next programme will air on Sunday and include highlights from the launch night as well as a JKR interview with one of the winning "cub reporters".
I realise that you're not in the UK, but I daresay TLC will provide all the details.

My daughters 16th birthday is the 16th and she wants to see "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".(She's in love with Johnny Depp) I told her it's a sign as to how much I love her that I would tear myself away from my book and take her to see this movie, and also to not ignore her all day to read.
Yesterday I had a brilliant idea. We're going to the Barnes and Noble party and it starts at six. I'm going to go at six, let the kids do the fun stuff, get my wrist band and then take the kids to the movie. We'll be back at Barnes and Noble before midnight, and it will help pass the time for me. I sure hope the movie doesn't suck!
BTW, she tried to pull the "It's my birthday, I should get to read the book first" crap. Yeah right! I love her, but there are limits!

At midnight on the 16th I will be at my local Meijer store (like a Super Wal-mart and operates in the Mid-western United States). This is the best place to buy HP books. They are generally cheaper, $14.87 advertised, and nobody realizes they will be selling the book at midnight. They don't need a special sale or party, they are generally open 24 hours a day anyway. They also have a ton of copies. For OotP, there were 10 people waiting at midnight and they had a pallet stacked 4 feet high with copies. Even if I was going to a bookstore party, I'd still buy it at Meijer. It is also closer to my house than any bookstore. So I will be home and reading my copy by 12:20 at the latest. Then I will read until about 4 am when I will take a brief sleep or a long nap (3-4 hours). Then I'll read until midnight, stopping only for bathroom breaks, to make a sandwich for lunch, and to microwave something for dinner. I might order pizza or chinese and have it delivered for dinner. Probably pizza, it is easier to eat and read (one hand on the book, one hand on the slice). And that is what I will be doing every minute of the 16th.

For any and all attending the Oak Park, Illinois fest, The Magic Tree Bookstore has updated their website to include maps and a list of the participating restaurants and a few special dishes that they'll be serving. I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the "Dragon Snot" at Salazar's (aka Fuego Loco) and will be trying every Butterbeer recipe in the 2005 Butter Beer Battle.

Oh, my! Well, my plans have changed considerably. Now I'm going to go pick up my fourteen year old non Harry fan sister and take her on an eight and a half hour road trip to Nashville.
She's never really been out of state and so I figure I'll be entertaining her for the next week.
My plan to shorten the amount of Harry-less time is to drive to pick her up on Friday (I live in Nashville), and then I'll try to leave as early as I can on Saturday. I still probably won't make it home before 4 pm. I hope sis will be tired and I might have a few hours to read before I fall asleep too. Then again, maybe not.
How will I ever make it a week without the new book?

So therefore Denise will be done with all her laundry and have finished HBP in time to prepare Saturday's lunch for nine people. And then she will start walking around on the surface of her pool.
I'm still not definite -- it sounds like Mr. Pince is going to get off work early Friday so he will not be able to pick up my book on his way home because it will be before midnight. So I'll probably have to see if I can talk everyone into stopping by the mall Saturday on the way to the family reunion, so that I can pick it up then. If not, then on the way back from the reunion. Worst case scenario, I'll have the book by around 6pm Saturday. After a quick glance at the titles and endpaper blurbs, I'll do the "nice hostess" thing for the evening, then sit up on the couch and read until I can't read anymore. Then I'll make breakfast and be "nice hostess" again, and will read whenever I possibly have a break. The sad thing is that it might not be until everybody goes to bed Sunday night. Then the guests will leave Monday noon-ish, Mr. Pince will go to work, Baby Pince will be in school, and I'll finally have the house to myself. Bwaha-ha-ha.
