I realize it's a bit of a childish question, but I feel that it has to be asked so the rest of us can get a better idea. How old/what gender/where are you? Also, feel free to post any other information about yourself or just draw attention to your info.

Joa, you can use HTML in your reply. I just change the font to Comic Sans and change the color. If you look right above the reply box, there is a link that should explain HTML.

This is the tag I usually put in front of my replies (taking out the * before) <*font face="Comic Sans MS" size=2 color=b93b8f>

I find this page to be the most helpful in finding a neat-o text color [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The click on original color chart to see colors and the code for them.

I previously posted only the basics. Now I am going to expand. For those who care, it looks like I'm the old man or grandfather of this forum based on the twenty who have said anything above. And yes, I am a grandfather being my granddaughter will be 23 months old tomorrow, the 9th. I do not consider myself an old man, even though my age says otherwise.

I am an accountant and engineer living in the middle of South Carolina. I was an engineer in the space program back in the 60's and have lived all over the world.

I am a big Harry Potter fan. I have read and re-read each of the four existing books at least fifty times each. Yes, I'm a speed reader. I am a big supporter of education being that my wife is a teacher. When I first read that young people were really reading these books, I had to buy the first book to understand why. That's when I got hooked. I feel that young people in the US do NOT read enough because they rely on television too much. I am forever giving HP books to young people in the hopes that it will enkindle their reading skills. I have even given HP books to people of all ages just to get them to read. I tell them that if a young person can read this book, I am sure that they can. It works!

As for the books, I'm looking forward to the next three. I like the plots, the verbs used by JKR, the so-called inconsistencies, the way that the books make your mind draw a picture of the characters, their surroundings, and what's happening.

I felt that I have said too much; but I thank Steve for his Lexicon with all its collection of information. I have been visiting his Lexicon since it first appeared. I thank each of you on this forum for having the patience to get this far in reading some ramblings from an old man.

Just remember that I left the space program in 1969 and what I have to share may be almost like a history program. 1969 was when we finally placed the first man on the moon. There was a lot of excitement about the space program then. Now everyone is rather blasé about space. In fact, most of the young people your age seem to care very little about space. I praise you for your feelings if I understood you correctly. If not, thanks for the Yo!

And BTW, I noticed that in some of your other posts, you were interested in the weather. In Columbia, South Carolina today, we had our first nice cool day today. It makes sense being our state fair is in progress. It's 61 degrees now at 4:26 in the afternoon. It has been in the 90's.

OK, everybody else is mentioning pets (even if they are Kneazles and Hippogriffs) and I can't resist...

We have five cats- Cookie, a siamese, Alvin and Zack, both black, Sapphire, long-haired gray/blue color, and Snidget, a golden tabby cat.

I need to take a good picture of Alvin (my favorite) so it can be my potrait. (as if you care)

Daria and Dawson - two Rottweilers named for two characters from the Highlander TV show (Darius and Joe Dawson)

Spike, a parrotlet, Piper, a cinnamon cockatiel and Shadow, a white faced dutch blue peachfaced lovebird (how is that for a mouthful?) (these are all birds, for those who are not certain)

Blizzard and Sandi, 2 dwarf Siberian hamsters..both girls and because they are dwarfs, they can stay in the same cage...unlike their larger counterparts who will kill one another.

Pets? Well... Hank is our German Shepard, he's about 9 now I think. Daisy is our Golden Retriever, about 8 years, then our cats. Thomas... a gorgeous black cat that weighs at least 10lbs, Elsa ( a tabby calico mix), Abigail Kathleen, our siamease, Jackson (average gray tabby), and Dezi.... the big fat one. We did have Jefferson and Franklin, but... well we have reason to believe Hank killed them. (Well something did) and then there's Goerge the Cockatiel...

My name is Joshua, 22, in North Texas making plans to get back to South Texas (Austin/Round Rock) as quickly as I possibly can. ^_^

My obsession is to become the biggest HP-knowledge geek in the region (good to see so many fellow Texans around) - I have read Chamber of Secrets (my favorite) no less than 20 times through, and though I have not read the others nearly as much, when I am bored or have free time I don't know what to do with I just pick a random chapter of a random book and start reading until I learn something new. I also have the supplement books, and am currently writing a fanfiction series called "In the Face of Destiny" which I will be posting links to soon, as soon as I get the chapters I have complete beta-read.

I'm also a rated expert on Brooms and Potions. ^_^

It's mostly a reference to the HP Trading Card game. I'm the Quidditch and Potions master. ^_^ Therefore I am generally recognized as such when it comes time for me to challenge other people to a game in the chatroom. 90% of the time, they know what they're going up against.

Which is why I love decks like my Colin Creevey Discard Deck which throw them for a loop every now and then. ^_^

However, being the obsessed geek I am, I do also know my brooms and potions from the books as well. ^_^

Hi everybody, Audrey, 42, from the San Francisco Bay Area. I became a Harry Potter fan after the movie came out. I saw the movie and was discussing it with a friend at work. She owned all four of the books and brought them in for me to read. Finished all of them in less than two weeks! Now every time I say anything about Harry Potter at work she just laughs and says she has created a monster.

One of the things I like the most about the books is how they appeal to people of all ages and from so many different countries. This forum is pretty good proof of that! It's great that we can have something so positive in common.

After over a month on this forum I have made the astonishing discovery that I have not told anyone that I am male. I was assuming people could tell that from the personality, character and tone of my posts, and then I realised WJ was female after thinking otherwise for several weeks (sorry WJ).

While I am at it I might as well add an extended introduction. I have a Maltese named Doggo which was picked up from the street, and I love soccer both as a participant and spectator sport. Unlike most Singaporeans I have a great interest in American sports especially baseball. I don't get the opportunity to play them here except basketball which I don't really like to play, although I do have a baseball glove and bat.

Here are the teams I root for: Diamondbacks, Bears, Knicks, Maple Leafs and Everton.

And of course I love Harry Potter.

I'm 34. I am from Oregon. I have an eight year old boy and a four year old girl (and my wife is due Dec. 6th with no. 3, a boy) I have only read the first three HP books (those are the only ones the library I work at has), but I purchased the audio CD versions to listen to while I drive to and from work, so I get to listen about 50-60 minutes a day. I won't get all four books finished until about six-seven weeks from now. I also like puns (which explains my forum name). I am a big Lord of the Rings fan which means the next couple of years are great fun for me at the movies.

Hi everyone, I live in Salt Lake City, I am 28, I am married and we have 1 daughter who is 2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is her favorite movie. I have only been acquainted with Harry since August 2002 and I was hooked instantly. It is a closet addiction and this is a wonderful outlet for it. I honestly thought I was losing it after I read the books the first time and I just couldn't stop thinking about them. I actually wish that I could be 11 years old with magical powers. I'm glad I'm not the only one, and apparently not the worst;^D. Now I don't feel so crazy. I don't own any of the books yet, but I am hoping to get a hard back box set for Christmas...

Let me start out by saying thank you to Steve for setting this up. I have posted a few times ( some very out there thoughts, thank you all for not trashing me ) and really enjoyed the thoughts that came back. I have noticed the wide age gap and the different countries represented. I love the fact that, although everyone might not agree with everything, we all get along in a mature atmosphere. Anyway I am getting away from the string . I am a 39 year old male from the great state of Ohio, in the US A. I have been married for 17 years no kids ( my wife thinks that I am bad enough lol ). I started reading the books thinking it was going to be a child’s book (I hear though boos and hisses now ). Boy was I wrong. When I started reading I could not put them down . . . My name is Christopher, I found my nickname on a packet of garden seeds (has a nice latinate ring, dontcha think??) and I'm finally getting around to introducing myself in this thread after hanging around the forum for a few weeks and going to the chat room a couple times.

As of a week ago I'm 42 years old. I'm married with one daughter and two sons, we all live in the Milwaukee (Wisconsin, USA) area. I'm an electrical controls designer/programmer working for a company that installs food processing equipment (basically big pressure cookers) all over North America, so I get sent out of town a lot. In my spare time I read, I listen to music, I accumulate old hand tools for woodworking, and I'm making my first violin. I hope to make a few more, as well as a classical guitar and maybe a lute or two someday.

My 9 year old daughter just discovered Harry Potter just this fall after being indifferent to the whole phenomenon for a couple years. I was surprised at how good the books are -- I just completed PoA earlier this week (it's now my favorite,) and now I'm a few hundred pages into GoF. As far as fiction goes, my very favorite author is Raymond Chandler. Yep, different genre... He wrote some wonderful novels and short stories about private detectives in mid-20th century Los Angeles, Philip Marlowe being his most famous character. His prose is incredibly beautiful.

And if you're still with me after the noir fiction rant ... I'm currently fascinated by the music of English composer John Dowland. I imagine this is the music that Dumbledore listens to in his spare time. Please investigate his Lachrimae for viols and lute -- they're indescribably beautiful. Complicated, cerebral, ravishingly melodic yet full of angst. Give 'em a listen, you probably won't be disappointed.

Hi! Hi! ^_^ My name's Shy Snape. And yes, that's my *real* name. Too bad it's completely different from my personality. I'm a loud, outspoken 17 y/o girl from the middle of nowhere (that's Oklahoma, USA to those of you not from here).

I started reading Harry Potter sometime last year I think and have suddenly become overly obsessed with it. I own all 4 books, which I've read a billion times, and the movie (which I sadly watch every night and fall asleep 10 minutes into it). Snape and Hermione are my two favorite characters. I sometimes wish that I had Snape's tongue and attitude and Hermione's brain, it'd make me a much more interesting person.

I play soccer for my school's Varsity team and I'm in just about every school club there is, so I rarely have free time. I'm a 19 year old female college student in Massachusetts (English major - probably why I look so hard for symbols and allegory) and an aspiring author/screenwriter. I didn't start reading Harry Potter until Newsweek ran that article on Goblet of Fire. Then I stole my brother's copy of Sorceror's Stone and the rest is history. Someday I'll write my own novels, they just won't be in the fantasy genre.

Speaking of which, I'm very glad that the two fanfics here are so well written and interesting because I can't stand fanfiction that just has a ton of swearing, sex scenes and bad spelling (you can tell I spend far too much time on the internet).

Oh, and you probably won't see me in the chatroom because I don't like them (I always feel like I'm intruding on something).

I live in the Irmo area and have live in this area since we built our first home here in 1971. This is my wife's 26th year teaching in the Irmo school system after teaching 6 years on the other side of Columbia. I have been a part of the Okrafest for years and yes it is still going and is extremely big now. So it has been almost sixteen years since you were here. When I first got into anime, I was at the mercy of whatever the local video stores had to rent. That resulted in me watching a lot of dubbed anime. I got used to it, so I can watch most dubs without writhing in pain. But, if I get to choose, I choose subs. Thank God for dual-language DVDs, huh?

Seven Falls always has a holiday light display that's pretty cool. Shopping in Old Colorado City or Manitou Springs is fun during Christmas too. If it hasn't snowed much you could try a trip to the summit of Pikes Peak. Sometimes this time of year the summit road is closed to the public, but we went up one year on Christmas Eve. That's all I have off the top of my head.

Yep, CU is my alma mater. And it really is a lovely, lovely place. The campus and surrounding areas are beautiful, and the entire city truly seems tailor-made for college students. I don't know anything about their humanities departments, but the psych department is excellent. ^_^ One drawback is that the cost of living in Boulder county is very high, so be prepared to have plenty of roommates or commute from Denver. The only other negative thing I can think of is that it's very homogenous. Almost everyone you meet will be white, upper-middle class, and moderately liberal. Oh, and the traffic is horrible. But other than that, it's great. ^_^

Out of the real Harry Potter books, I like Chamber of secrets the best, I think, but it changes over time. I never really liked the fourth book. If I was at Hogwarts, I'll probably be rither in Slitherin or Ravenclaw (in that order), and certainly not Hufflepuff. hi everyone. great forum. 32, male, eastern Pennsylvania, married, 3 kids. I got the first book for my oldest son when he was about 4, but he didn't have the attention span to sit through it. I read the first 2, then after seeing the SS movie, he wanted to read the book. We polished the first 3 off reading a little every night at bedtime. Now we're half way done with 4. I got caught up and finished the book after he went to sleep a few weeks ago. He loves it, but I'm a bit worried about how he'll process the last few chapters in goblet. every once in a while he'll crawl into bed in the middle of the night and say he had a bad dream about voldemort. He's 17 now. no wait, he's 6. My wife and I talked it over and will probably take to reading those chapters during daylight hours after school, and maybe it won't spook his sleep. Anyone else deal with this?

Thanks Lexicon Steve for creating this site. I agree with all the other folks who prefer this site to other HP sites. It really is the best one I have found to satisfy my cravings for all things Potter.

Now for some info. about me, since that's what this thread is all about. I'm 35, female, live in NYC and teach in a public school. I heard about Harry Potter from a Reading Workshop I attended 5 years ago and started reading the books because my students highly recommended Books 1 and 2 to me (the only ones out at the time). I teach 10 and 11 year olds. I delight in having conversations about the books with anyone who's interested, and enjoy discussing theories with the students in my class who've read the books. Maybe they'll join the forum discussions one of these days. Maybe some of them are already posting messages already!

I came across Harry Potter after 3 years of resistance. I finally bought P/SS at a half price book store and promptly got myself in trouble at work because I couldn't stop reading it and as a result, didn't work for an entire day. I also got in trouble for wearing my Muggles for Harry Potter! t-shirt which is, apparently, against the dress code. Who knew? Needless to say, I had all four books in the span of a week and am working on reading them to my 3 year old son. He keeps telling me to skip to Harry Potter and the Goblins.... he doesn't understand that there is no such thing. I'm 22, female, and from Austin, TX. This is my first post... seemed like a great place to start. I would like to say that the Lexicon has GOT to be the coolest HP site that I've hit yet... I'm determined to follow every link and read every page. Fat chance of that, I think.

Hi everyone, been reading this great site for a while, thought I'd join in. Thought I'd like to be married to the owner of the ice cream parlour, who is kind to Harry! Hello, Potter fans!!! I'm a new member, but I've been visiting this forum for months and months, so you may not know me... but I know you. Bwahahaha. (Little scary, ain't it?)

Anyway, I'm a 16 year old girl from New England... And it is really cold out here. Very, very cold. We're lookin' at a white Christmas!!! (Hasn't happened for years, whatever fools say about NE)

I've read all of the HP books about 12 times each, baring Prisoner of A, which I've read about 20. In my opinion it's the best b/c it doesn't end with the classic "Harry defeats Voldemort and somehow manages to escape." And Lupin helps.

Harry Potter is cool. Really cool. Of course, the statement "Harry Potter is cool" is sorta redundent... Harry Potter should be defined in a dictionary as "cool, very awesome book"

greetings everyone- just wanted to say hello- I've been a lurker on the forum for about a month and half now and finally got up the nerve to sign up. It's fascinating reading, I have to admit. lol It's also nice to see I'm not the only Potterfanatic. All my family and friends think I'm a bit nuts as far as the whole universe is concerned. A little bit about me- I'm 31, living in Arizona, single and basically an all around geek. When I grow up I want to be a writer, though. (hah) And ah yes.. about my nick, I think Slytherin's get a bit dumped on.

Hi, everyone! I'm a fory-something SE Ohio mother of three who have nearly all flown the coop. When reading POA I kept wondering why I thought Lupin was so familiar to me and I realized my hubby has many of the same good attributes (without the werewolf thing). Professionally I'm a nurse. I was working on a degree in English for a while because I'm such a bibliophile. I LOVE all the analyzing and discussion of Harry & Co. Cannot get enough of it. Have wacky sense of humor - watched too many 1960s sitcoms growing up. The family thinks I've gone over the edge with HP but it sure is making it easier for them to pick out Christmas gifts!

Hi, I'm a female - Mickey is a nickname. I'm 45 and have been reading the HP books non-stop since July 4. Seeing the Sorcerer's Stone turned me onto them. My husband is just as much a fanatic as I am, and even my father's read the books and loves them! I love the mental exercise I get from reading the books - so much to think about! I'm from the Chicago area (you can tell I'm not a native or I would say "Chicagoland"), born in N.J., but I've long since lost my accent. I don't have kids, which is too bad because I would definitely let them read Harry Potter!

Hey, I am a 16 year old girl. I was born in Switzerland, but my dad got transferred to South Carolina when i was 5 so now i live in SC. I really love the books. At first i didn't want to read the books, but my friends kept telling me that they are really good, so i finally read the first one. Well, after that, i read the 2nd and the 3rd as well. All one after another. Untill the 4th book finally came out. And i read it in 4 days! They are my favorite books now. I can't wait till book five!!I really like the forum and reading everyone elses ideas about the books. Though i have to admit, some of them are downright silly! But i really like this forum, and I'm glad that i found this website!! It's great!

Hello everyone! I too am a Harry Potter junkie. I am also a Forum Virgin, so if I break any of the rules, please forgive me. It is purely accidental.

I am a 28 yr old mother from Utah. I swore a long time ago that I would never be a part of something that made people act so crazy. Like waiting outside in the freezing rain with a wind chill factor of -10°, for days, just for a book!! But my curiosity got the better of me, and 4 books later I cannot get enough of the HP gang. I actually squealed and clapped my hands when I stumbled across this site. Thank you Lexicon Steve for creating this site. Kudos on a job well done! I nearly went into sensory overload shock. I'm a 43 year old drywall contractor, family trade. College drop out, 23 hours short of electrical engineering degree. Yea, sad isn't it? Here in Kansas the land of Oz. I haven't seen Dorthy or Toto but we do get our share of tornados. Two years ago my twelve year old son brought along a Harry Potter book on a family trip to Port Aransas, TX. Well, I picked it up and have been hooked ever since. It's awful. This site is the only relief I've been able to find.

Kind of sounds like I just introduced myself to one of those addiction help groups. "My name is ... I was hooked ...". Sorry, I'm not looking to give this up. I want more!

Also the town next to where i live is called Blackpool this is also mentioned when Neville says his uncle threw him of blackpool pier (i dont know which one though because there are three!)

I've posted enough that I ought to say who I am. My name is John, male of course, I'm 55 so I can be company for Kip, retired after a career as a lawyer and bank executive. I live in Toronto, Canada, but I was brought up and went to school in London, England.

I read the first book (Philosopher's Stone up here in Canada) out of curiosity because people were talking about it, and like everyone else got hooked immediately.

My nickname was given to me on another site by a friend who liked cute fuzzy lambs- it is so inappropriate that I just had to use it. I'm very impressed with the way this site is run and the great originality of thought among the posters. If all the ideas floated here were put together, they would make a wonderful fantasy book!

I bought Books 1 & 2 for my youngest son and then ended up reading them after seeing the first movie. Ever since then, Harry Potter has been creeping into our house. I have all the books on tape now and just picked up the hardback books at a Scholastic Warehouse Book Sale in Charlotte, N.C. last week. Also found their "Literature Guides" for teachers to use in the classroom, which are very interesting. I've only had a computer for a couple of years and have never tried to join a forum before, so I hope you will be patient with me.

hi, I'm male and 23. is there anyone out there from west virginia? besides onyx (my sister)

I live in a quiet house near a park, surrounded by wildlife, as most west virginians prefer. I enjoy computers, but I'm usually found out on my hammock reading a good book.

we've got a bunch of pets. A blue collie pup named Hedgehog who was sired by a tri collie named chief and a blue collie dam named velvet. We've got a turtle called Stormin Normin ( there's a funny story as to how he got the name) some flamepoint himalayan cats, Angel, Comet, Ragnar (raggy), Willow, and Obsidian (sid). and after much begging from my sister we got a hedgehog, now we may rename our pup. and a few wild pets (kept outside, no exceptions) that include, but not limited to, a shrew, two wild turkeys that enjoy stealing dog food, and a baby flying squirrel.

Hi, I am a 32 year old housewife. I have a son, 5 and a daughter 2. I borrowed the HP books from my nieces and nephew after I saw the first movie. I was HOOKED. I recently went and saw the second movie. LOVED IT! I was cruising the internet for any facts and trivia about HP and found the LEXICON. I am glad that I am not the only adult that loves HP! I think my daughter must be one of the youngest HP fans. Any time she sees anything that has something to do with HP, she starts to dance and yells "Harry Potter, Harry Potter". My mom is currently knitting a Harry Potter scarf for her for xmas.

If you change your name, Hermione G, then in the "Second line of information" under your new name just put something like "Formerly Hermione G" for a while so people recognize you and get used to the name change. 'Just a suggestion. Have a happy holiday season!

I'm a 17 year old Canadian student and (hopefully) writer-to-be with a passion for these books, for I believe them to be the new Big Thing in English literature.

I recall that I was quite dismissive of HP when I first heard of it, and often poked fun at a girl who loved them in my school. When I started reading them, however, I could not stop. When that same girl saw me with them then, she said: "Hey, I thought you didn't like Harry Potter... They all come back!"

I'm also something of a writer, having written one fantasy novel by the age of sixteen (unpublished). I usually post on the Lexicon while working on my next novel (I'm doing that now, actually) and very much enjoy the debates that ensue with the sharp minds found here.

Hello everybody. My name is Grace from Tulsa, OK. I'm fairly new to the HP craze. I started reading the books about a month ago. I wanted to find out what the fuss was all about so spent the weekend at the local Barnes & Noble reading all 4 books. Of course, I decided to purchase them after I was done, and have reread them continuously ever since.

I'm 35, a programmer, your basic geek, avid reader, and I get really obsessive with things I'm interested in. I'm sooo glad I found this forum.

WOW! It's so great to find a posting place for all of my sparse and random Harry Potter thoughts. However, here are some random thoughts about me: I have spent 20 wonderful (some not quite so peachy) years in this existance:) I'm a "girl" cause i still like to have fun and be a kid but I inset the "" bc I do have the serious biochemisty streak in me, i.e. I go to FSU and am a Biochem major. I have lived between Florida and Greece for all of my life so to me Tallahasse is the North Pole (heck its been 20 degrees C something for the last week!*wink*) I'm also one of those people who is getting really antsy waiting for the next book. I do hate my impatience (argh stupid spelling). Ok I think bordom has sunk deep enough into all of you so I must be saying nightie night to you all:) Have fun out there!

Hi, everybody, my name is Drusilla (my friends call me Dru). I am 31 years old, a born Austrian but have lived in England and now live in Germany. I studied languages, literature and theatre and am now training to be a teacher. Such a pity you can't apply at Hogwarts, I hear they are always looking for teachers there ;-)

Two years ago my mom bought the Harry-Potter-books and I became interested and - even while reading the first book - absolutely addicted. I also watched both films several times and found them exceptionally well done.

The Harry-Potter-books have been my famous books since I first read them and I extremely enjoy talking and speculating about them. I am now reading the books for the third time. I only have the German edition (though I plan to buy and read the English one as well), so please forgive me if I cannot give exact quotations here or make mistakes, as the translation is quite good but not ideal and a few things differ quite a lot from the original.

The picture I chose to represent myself is Amber Benson (Tara from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"). I chose her, because I like her a lot and think I look a bit like her.

I have been reading Harry for some years now and the amount of times I have read them...i will not share, but I will share that I wanted my husband to read them I knew he would love them! But he has a very demanding job and when he gets home he wants to be with the girls or spend time with me so we started reading them aloud, that way we would be able to talk about the chapters as they go and spend time together, they are great out-load stories. I can't wait until my eldest daughter is 8 I think then I will start reading them with her!

Hi Everyone,

I was SO impressed when I found the lexicon a few months ago! (Steve is the BEST!) I was here when the forum was started, but only as a guest and I have spent many, MANY hours reading thread after thread.

In the process I have learned many things, disagreed with some things, accepted others, and come to know many forum members even though they don't know me.

I've been here when people argued with each other and when they supported each other. I've read discussions which were humorous, frustrating, irritating, sad, supportive and most informative. I've been through "Join the Potties!", cried for Headache when he was in the hospital and again for Hamuera when Headache was gone, looked forward to Denise's next baby, appreciated Kip's work when he became co-host of the forum (Go, Kip!), been grateful for everyone's input, and marveled at the tolerance, patience, mutual respect and intelligence on this forum.

Since I know you, I suppose it's time you know me. I'm a 47 year old wife and mother of 3 (not so little any more) lambs aged 18, 20 and almost 22. And I'm another Oklahoman, although I was born in Kentucky, grew up in Michigan, and lived in Hawaii for 3 years.

I'm happy to be a member of the absolute best Harry Potter site on the planet!

H1 Lucero. I had the same problem here in England, until the publication date was announced. I then got onto the website of Bloomsbury, the publishers in England, and it's ordered and paid for, to be delivered on 6/21. You can't get it from Bloomsbury due to copyrite laws, but why not try the Scholastic website? They are the publishers in USA.

My name is, as stated in my handle Kimberly Bloink, though I usually go by just Kim. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but have lived on the east side of the state as well. I am twenty years old, and officially a junior at Grand Valley State University, though it will ake me another 3 or so years to complete my degree in HIstory with an emphasis on secondary education(my minor is english). I can't speak any other language besides English, unless you count just a few words. I wanted to take German next year, but no one teaches it at the highschool, so I will resort to French and Spanish. But anyways... I'm going to tell about myself... b/c I can't seem to find where I told about myself before... but anywho... I'm Lindsay, I'm 13, am in 8th Grade, and live in Kentucky. I've been here on the forum since about November, I think. I don't seem to post much anymore... I mainly just read the fanfictions and occasionaly visit the chatroom. That's about it, I guess...

Hi, everyone. I began joining the forum just this week. But this is the first time I'll introduce myself. I am Grace, 21, female, from the Philippines.

I didn't like HP before because everyone seemed to do so. I guess I am a late bloomer since I only started reading HP books just last November after I saw the CoS movie. But after I saw the movie with my HP fanatic friend, I decided that if I am to watch the next HP movie with her, it'd be better if I already have read the books. I mean, it's pretty annoying to watch a movie with someone who keeps on telling you what's gonna happen next(Hermione will be attacked, It's Voldemort, etc.,). And after I have read the books, what can I do? I can't help but love them.

Hee hee, Prof. Sprout, I was only saying that I wasn't all that good in Japanese. "Jozu janai"--"jozu" means skilled, "janai" is the short informal of "de wa arimasen", or "ja arimasen", and at any rate I made a mistake, because you don't use "janai desu" for verbs. Anyhow, it means "I'm not very skillful at Japanese."

Denise S. now I recognize janai, I always separated it as ja nai, or put it at the end of a noun or verb, I never realized it was one word. When writing in kanji and hiragana, I hate that there are no spaces. When we have to do dialogs, Words that I don't know I run together, but I speak fast enough no one notices

As much as I love this forum, I'd really like to have some "actual live humans" to debate Harry Potter with. It's not that I am not trying to "convert " people! My friends and relatives (including, but not limited to my numerous nieces and nephews) keep getting the books for all real or imagined "events" in their lives, but most just put them on the shelf and DON'T TOUCH THEM!! (Sorry for shouting) Bad people, really bad people. They should start shutting their ears in oven doors,grrr.... :^)

I can commiserate, Ari.. it took me some doing but I actually got my mom to finally read the series. Now that she understands the obsession, it's cool and we actually talk about everything. I tell her things that are discussed on this forum. heh. She gets a kick out of it.

Hi everyone!

I've been reading the lexicon and the forum for months now but only started posting recently. I am 20 years old, female and live in Halifax in the UK but spend most of my time at university in Leeds. Am moving down to London in a few months when i finish uni and can't wait. I started reading the HP books after the first movie came out - would you believe I only went to watch it to see what all the fuss is about! Now i am obsessed. My family are very unimpressed cause I'm 21 soon and all i want for my birthday is the box set of the first four books in hardback! I have my watch set to count down the days till June 21st (is that really sad?????????)

I'm a woman, late 20s, married, no kids, in the northeast US. I'm an avid reader of just about all types of fiction. I was a bit of a latecomer to HP-mania -- read the first book just before the first movie came out, the rest of them this past fall. I didn't "resist" them because they were popular, the books just weren't especially on my radar screen. Initially, I enjoyed them as entertaining and well-written, but got more deeply interested after PoA, and after GoF became pretty obsessed. My husband and friends have read and liked the books, but none quite shares my ... er ... enthusiasm. I love the friendliness, humor and intelligent discussion on this forum, and the wealth of info in the Lexicon. Have been lurking for awhile, but recently started posting.

We..ell, i'm 17 and I'm from India...i'm one of those "provisional" members or whatever, and i'm TOTALLY new to this. I like reading harry potter (what earth-shattering news, huh!) and i personally find harry a little too...um...moody? silly? i don't think i like harry hinself as much as ron. like reading and i like writing, i've written a lot of stories and poems, gotten them published too. first began when i was 8, first got published (a story about a squirrel, in a children's mag) when i was 10. am i boasting too much? yknow what, reading over this, i get the feeling that i've got a lot of attitude...but i just need to know how to go about here. i mean, once i become a regular, i'll have no problem. at the mo, i'm totally confused. hmmmmmmmmm.

I do not understand why you feel that edit access is necessary to view what is in that link above. Could you please explain why you feel that?

The post was addressed to Hedwig and should not affect anyone else. I have removed the link if that was what was the problem.

However if someone needs to view posts in the early post number like the one above, do the following:

1. At the top of this page is an icon that says "To Top"

2. Click on this icon and that action will take the view to the beginning of this thread.

3. At the bottom of the posts on that new page will be an icon that says "More"

4. Click on that icon and your action will take you to the next page of erly posts.

5. Continue clicking on the "More" icon on each following page until you reach #65 or whatever early post you need to view.

This procedure works on all large threads.

Hello, I stumbled accross the lexicon two days or so ago when on the search for some HP information I'm glad to find a place where there are many people who like me are interested in the details of HP. Unfortunately the people around me seem not to appreciate it when I want to discuss theories about HP for hours..., I guess I'll do a lot of reading (in the forums) first to see if I can participate in any ongoing discussion, but just knowing that there is s side for adults is great already

Hello, I too have been lurking around this forum (I really love this forum) for quite sometime and have never properly introduced myself. I am officially a soccer mom, to a son and triplet daughters . I first read the HP books after listening to an interview with JK on public radio. I wanted to read the books before my then 4 year read them and I became hooked. Then I got my husband to read them too. (For Sam) I grew up in New York city but live in sleepy Conneticut. I have read the books several times and am trying to fill the next 3 months, one week, and half hour with all background and support materials about Harry Potter. I only recently opened this thread so I figured I add my bit. Thanks to all of you for being so articulate and thoughtful.

I finished that, and got CoS. Two days later I was begging for PoA. When I got PoA I stayed up all night reading it. The next day I went to the bookstore and came home with GoF. At which point I found out that that was the last one that I could read at that time, and promptly got depressed about rushing through. So I started over. Oh, right... I go to college, and I am a waitress. I'm still trying to decide on a major, so don't ask, unless you want a long drawn out answer. :-)

My real name is Jeff. I am 34 years old. I'm originally from New York State, but I've been living in Massachusetts for the past three years. I'm a Mental Health Counselor; my profession was what led me to Harry Potter.

In 2000 I was assigned to work with a pre-teenaged boy. This boy was somewhat difficult to engage in therapy, but the one subject he would talk about was Harry Potter. I'd been hearing about how Harry was becoming increasingly popular for some time, but had not yet made the time to check out what all the fuss was about. After the second session with my client talking about Wizards, and also Muggles and Hogwarts --whatever they were, I thought that I'd better go to the library on the way home from work and check out the first Harry Potter book, just so I'd have something better to say than, "Sounds like you really like Harry Potter!"

I figured that I'd just read the first book, so that I could make progress with my client. Well, I'd say that I read the first 20-30 pages for the client. After that, it was all me! I couldn't believe the humor, pathos, richness of the characters and the setting. I think I slept about three hours that first night! I was through PoA about 10 days after I started P/SS. I went through withdrawal prior to GoF's release, luckily I only had to wait a few months. I wish I knew then that we'd be waiting three years for OoP!

Hello everyone. I bookmarked this site ages ago, but never actually started exploring it until a few days ago. I've spent the last several days desperately reading every thread I could. Since most of them are quite long, it's taking me quite a while! I'm female, married, 25, and live in Canada.

I've been completely blown away by the theories on this board. I've chosen my handle to reflect that. Do any of you like the "Pinky and the Brain" cartoon? I feel like all of you people are like the Brain - really intelligent, finding clues, making logical assumptions. I, on the other hand, am Pinky - bumbling along trying not to make too much of a mess while trying to understand what you all are saying. I'm still a little unsure about the whole squid thing....

Anyway, I'm glad to be here, even if I can't think of anything intelligent to post!

Welcome, Pinky. This is an impressive forum, isn't it? It can be overwhelming at first because we have spent so much time brainstorming and hammering out theories that it sounds like we know almost as much as JKR. But there's no guarantee that she will use any of the theories we have so logically figured out. We could be wrong about everything. How smart will we look then? Please don't feel intimidated-I'm sure your thoughts are just as good as anyone else's. Jump in and join the fun!

Hi, troops! In response to overwhelming demand (okay, okay, just Matt Allair!), here's a bit about me:

Tall, dark and handsome
(Actually: tall with huge feet, mousy blond with the odd red streak, and average-looking)

Hailing from Bolton, Lancashire1, UK

37, recent Harry Potter convert (duh!), keen archer (1st Class, bordering on Bowman Class), would-be writer and computer programmer, long-time SF fan (currently in possession of over 700 books), keen modelmaker.

I took the Sorting Test on the HP website and was sorted into Gryffindor, and I work at the Bolton branch of Reality (formerly White Arrow) - with a bunch of lads I'd place mostly in Slytherin!
(There's one or two I'd put in Hufflepuff, but the rest are certainly not "unafraid of toil", and as for bravery, wit and learning - naaah!)

I speak Assembler, C, PASCAL, BASIC, COBOL, UNIX, HTML and Technobabble...and, occasionally, English.

Oops, nearly forgot - I love cats! I'm owned by a beautiful 3-year-old British Shorthair Tricolour Tortoiseshell called Tigger (yes, I know Tigger of Winnie the Pooh fame was a boy and all torties are queens, but if you'd seen her as a kitten you'd know the name fits!).

1 Anyone prattling on about "Greater Manchester" in my hearing will get the hiding they deserve, I promise you. ;>

Hello. I'm a 17 year old girl who lives in Texas. I'm basically a half-homeschooler, or rather, I do school by correspondence. In the homeschooling community where I live, liking the Harry Potter books is frowned upon. Thus it is rather difficult to discuss HP with most of the people I know. Fortunately, my two best friends do like the books.

I love to read all kinds of books, especially fantasy. Also, I am obsessed with writing, and can't go more than a couple of days without it. However, I have no plans to become a full-time professional writer. I'll simply have to make time to write and do the other tasks that I need to do as well. At least, that's what I tell myself. In reality, I often get so caught up in stories I'm writing that I forget to do my other work!

When I go to college, I may major in biochemistry. So far, my favorite subject in school has been chemistry, though biology is a close second.

By the way, I am an absolutely weird person. Don't say I didn't warn you!

I can't remember if I ever introduced myself here. So here goes.

My name is Gina. I'm 33 years old (will be 34 end of April). I live in New York City. I am a social worker--I run a homeless shelter and teach at a university.

I first got into HP by watching the first movie on cable about 8 times. Then I broke down in December and bought CoS. After that I was hooked. I started prowling around the internet. I knew there was this huge HP fanbase. I remembered seeing all the merchandise in the stores and thinking it was cute. But after I got hooked, I started searching around the internet wondering if there were others as obsessed with Snape as I am. Sure enough, we are out there. And in here, to my great pleasure!

I'm having so much fun here. I check the Lexicon Forum every day now unless something comes up (like getting a new tattoo last weekend! Someone please stop me before I get the Slytherin coat of arms on my shoulder. I've already managed to get Xena's chakram subtley included in the design on my left arm). All you crazed fans should definitely come to St. Mungos on the fanfic forum. Dessert is on us! (Well, mostly those in the Fans of Trelawney room at this point)

I'll be back in London in June, just in time for the release of OoP. And I'm thrilled beyond belief. Oh, and I speak German too, for to add to the earlier discussion.

OK, I'm Kayte ("Saralinda" is our boss cat), age -- let's just say I qualify for senior discounts. I'm married and a multiple grandma in scenic Pittsburgh, PA. My son got me reading HP in September of 2001. Now the whole extended family (save one holdout daughter on Long Island) are hooked thoroughly. I'm a writer and an editor, and I really appreciate the mature tone of the posters here, even the very youngest.

Hm, what else? Oh, right -- seven cats (four of them black), one enormous dog, also black. When I'm not obsessing on Harry, I obsess on Holmesiana, grand opera, Shakespeare, old-fashioned pen-and-paper-and-dice role playing games, and true crime. Um, and I really like Eminem, which freaks my kids out totally.

I am British. I have a British passport. I am also from the north of England. I have Irish, Scottish and Welsh friends. I particularly enjoyed living in Wales with a Scottish house-mate and Irish boyfriend(now ex). I always actively encourge people to visit the whole of the UK. I sometimes annoy people at work with this enthusiastic "encouraging".

I believe that I get this trait from my mum who has been known to start conversations with folks from different nations in the queues (that means lines) at Florida's Disneyworld on the same theme.

PS I think it's time that Wales/somebody Welsh got a mention in the books.

Welcome to the Forum. I noticed that you are from Pittsburgh. That is one of my favorite cities being that my daughter and son-in-law met each other at Carnegie Mellon as undergrads and both have masters from there. They lived on Kentucky Avenue while there.

The Chat Room on the Forum is an extra that World Crossing apparently thinks is hardly used. It can be very enjoyable; however you have to have patience in finding someone there. Some times there are a dozen or so in the Chat Room for long period of time and then there are long periods of times when there is no one in the Chat Room.

We have set up a thread to let me know when someone is in the Chat Room; however the information is only as good as the person has the patience to stay if he/she is there alone. It is tricky to keep talking to yourself so that the Chat Room will not time out on you!

Certainly! Pittsburgh was a nightmare throughout most of its history, because there were no controls on the steel mills and coal mines. I'm not a native, but I've seen film footage of this place with the skies black and scarlet from the smokestacks. Friends tell me how it was never truly night for the glow off the horizon, and never truly day because of the smoke hanging in the air.

After World War II the region cracked down on pollution in a big way. (Possibly related to this, most of the steel industry has abandoned the area.) Geography helped here; Pittsburgh is located along a steep four-river valley. A surprising amount of its terrain is just too rugged to build on, so there are these beautiful green areas even in the heart of downtown. Trees help cleanse the atmosphere efficiently, so the scrub-up has proceeded quickly.

We live twelve minutes from the Golden Triangle (the heart of the city, where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers unite to form the Ohio), and just a mile from the Ohio River itself, and yet our kids routinely saw deer (and some say the occasional bear cub) out the windows of their secondary school. The flow of the terrain means that streets bend and dip, and builders use some creative methods to construct houses.

Paradise, no. Scenic, absolutely! One of the reasons we moved here was the city's tendency to surprise us: We would be chugging along what looked like an industrial road and suddenly round a bend into a park or a steep hillside dotted with wildflowers.

Wow -- didn't mean to sound so much like a booster! It's not perfect, but it sure can be pretty.

Saralinda - I have found that people are usually in the chat room around 10pm EST. This is not manadtory, just the time that I find people. Some days there are more then others, sometimes people come in earlier, sometimes later. Every now and then, I find people there during the day as well.

Kip - What do you mean by "World Crossing apparently thinks that it is hardley used?" I think the chat room on the main forum is used plenty, I find people there almost every night. Do they keep tabs on us?

Thanks for the reply Kip, I hope so, too. Wow, you're a writer, Saralinda?!? That's so cool! I want to be one and I'm presently "attempting" to write two stories and a bunch on fanfics(mostly anime), but whenver I write a chapter I read it and think "I can do better" and start all over again. Also also want to travel the the places in my stories to get more of a feel for it. I figure I'll probably finish one by thirty. I need to live more before I can write something good. I'm told you are supposed to write what you know, after all. Wow, sounds like Pitsburgs very pretty! I spent almost twelve of my years in a very small town called Tumbler Ridge(a coal mining town) in the middle of the Northern Rockies. I'd see bear, deer, cougars, etc. quite often. Great place to grow up. And here there are a lot of rabbits(thanks to parents letting their bunnies free after Easter), turtles, snakes, many deer, seagulls and other birds. I don't like the starlings much. One attacked me and they are everywhere since they have no natural predators. They came over from England, or so I am told. I've had three cats in my life, Malika(f/tabby), Dahja(m/black with a crooked tail, whom we were told was a girl but wasn't), and my first cat since age 5, Cotton Ball(female part persian who we had to leave with our neighbors when moving to Grande Prairie, Alberta and she ran off and is still lost.) We had to give away the former two cats from bad allergies. Can't help it when you can't breathe. Cruel. I'm sorry, I blab too much. This is a fantastic site! I know what it's like to have to go through every book fifty times over to get every bit of information possible. I also know what it's like to fall asleep while doing so and have your face collide with the keyboard. Very painful. Coffee is a necessity. Later!

I have been around since late October and I think it is time I introduce myself: My name is Alejandra, I am 33 year old, single, from Austin Texas originally from Mexico; English is my second language. I am a teacher and discover the Lexicon by accident while looking for vocabulary. I love the Harry Potter series and was so happy not to be alone anymore. I am very humble by the level of intelegince on this forum. I have been corrupted by television and only rediscover my love of reading after reading the Harry Potter books. I was in shock at first; there was so much information to read in the Lexicon and here. I wanted to read it all. As this is my first experience with a forum, it took me a while to figure out that I could become a member and that threads that I had read will no longer be marked as new. I will probably not post often; I am not as eloquent as so many here and writing is one of my weeknesses; I am also shy by nature and a loner but I read almost everything. I come here so often that you have become part of my family and I guess I wanted to become part of the Lexicon family. As you can notice I am also bad at punctuation and I will die without a spell check. I also wanted to thank Steve for starting the Lexicon and the forum and Kip and Denise P. for all their hard work on the forum; know that it is all appreciated. Sorry about the long post.

Ahh, formal introductions. I've been posting around for about a month now, and I must say that I feel so comfortable on this thread that I'm starting to be a Harry Potter obsessor again. I first read Harry Potter books four years ago (right when PoA came out), and I was crazy for Harry Potter for that entire year, when I was a regular at the Amazon.com message board (is anyone else here an old member of that site?) I figured I posted so long ago, I might as well re-post. My name is Gabrielle and the "D" is from my real last name, not Fleurs little sisters name. I am from New York, Northern Westchester to be exact. Well, not entirly exact. I live in a small(ish) town in Westchester but that shall remain nameless. I live with my mom, sister (when she isn't at school in the University of Rhode Island) and my brother. I am the middle child.

Hm... alittle bit about me... Well, my spelling is horrible (which I'm sure most of you have noticed), and I love to write. I am in High School, a freshmen. My birthday is November 11th (1987) so that makes me 15. I tend to ramble and sometimes I dont make sence the first time I write things.

I have a cat (named Scribble). She is a silver tabby. I also have a bird (named Hobbes). He is a Canary.

I like the theater, history, films (Im big on Moulin Rough and Chicago, but two of my all time favorites are The Iron Giant and The Emporer's New Groove), reading (besides JKR, I really like Nick Hornby), Calvin and Hobbes (yes, the comic) and music. I'm not particulary an Eminem fan like some of you are (about 100 posts ago... I think), I like rock alot better but I'm no stranger to classical, pop and country.

Yes, here I am again. I was here a few months ago, but then kind of disappeared from the forum until now, and since everyone's demanding I introduce myself... well, here I am re-introducing myself.

I'm a female from Jacksonville, Florida, USA. I just turned 18 on April 2 (making me an Aries and proud of it) and will soon be graduating from high school and entering Jacksonville University this fall to major in Elementary Education (yes, I hope to become a teacher).

My interests include dragons (as you can probably tell from my pic), horses, sharpshooting (a recent hobby, actually), American football, history, and Lord of the Rings. And now my smart and manipulative friends have gotten me hooked on Harry Potter.

I like most everyone in the books, however Draco and Lucius strike a cord of loathing in me. My favorite character would be, dare I say, Severus Snape, especially for his complexity and seemingly anti-hero role. The character I'm most like, so I'm told by many, is Hermione, from the book smarts to the self-confidence to the looks, even.

You'll notice also from my pic that I favor Slytherin. I've picked that house as my own because, honestly, every on-line test I've taken has sorted me into all four houses at some point, making me a bit like Harry in that the Sorting Hat has seemed to have difficulty placing me in a house due to my possession of all the houses' main traits. Overall, though, I tend to be very ambitious about whatever I set out to do and demand nothing short of excellence from myself (nope, not a perfectionist at all... whatever gave you that idea? ), so Slytherin it is. Although, I can happily and confidently assure you that I'm not going to turn evil anytime soon, and that I'm probably one of the more friendly Slytherins you'll meet.

Hi I'm Jack 35 y/o live in NY

I just got into the Harry Potter series and now have become a bit obsessed with it. I read all four books 5 times in 3 months. I'm not really a fan of these types of books but something about them really got to me. The good vs evil. choices and actions that have a causal effect in the future, and the memory of childhood friendships.

Also

JKR really is one heck ( is that allowed ) of a mystery writer. Something of no apparent reasoning in Book 1 seems to explain EVERYTHING in Book 3. and so on.

I really have to thank everyone who has posted to this site. I came across things I had never thought of on my own.

I'm a month and 9 days younger than Gabrielle, and one month 19 days younger than Alianora. (20/12/1987) I'm in 10th grade, so that would make me a sophomore in high school if I was in the US. But Gabrielle is a freshman. How does the education system work that results in this discrepancy?

In each of the 50 states, there is a state department of education that sets the rules for education within that state. Most states have students begin their education with a kindergarten system of one or two years before they begin grade 1. Most states use a system of twelve grades in their public education system that is free to all students. Names normally assigned to the grades 9 through 12 in the last four years of this public education system are freshman (9th), sophomore (10th), junior (11th), and senior (12th).

The key to your question is at what age does a student begin the first grade. Most states use a cut-off date of 1 November. If the student is 6 years old by that date, he/she would have been able to start the first grade at the beginning of the school year which is normally in the middle of August before that 1 November date. So some students may be five and some may be six when they begin the first grade.

Making the system more complex is a number of issues that I will not completely cover:

Parents or the school may decide to hold a student back a year from their normal class for a lot of reasons. Some deal with the physical size of the student or health related problems and some deal with their academic ability. Students may also be advanced to a higher grade.

The bottom line is that birthdays have a lot of where a child is placed; however there are many other factors that are considered in the placement of a student in a particular grade.

Nice to know there are so many people born within 2 months of me.

Let me explain why I am considered "old" for my grade (for Kimiraikkonen). In parts New York, where I live, the cut off age is December 2nd, (3 weeks and 2 days after my birthday). I went to kindergarten with I was 4. Basically, I didn't say one word my whole year. I was incredibly shy in kindergarten in first grade. So, even though my academics were OK, my mom decided to hold me back one year to make me more comfortable (at least that's what she tells me). There are quite a few kids in my grade older than me. Some were born in the summer of '87 but still only in 9th grade. I guess it just depends on the kid. My friend Joanna is exactly one year younger than me and we have all the same classes.

So... I hope that kind of cleared that up...

Actually, there's a reason for me being in 9th as well. I went to a school where there was an extra grade between kindergarten and 1st grade, only for a few kids with birthdays after a certain point.

Well - as long as we are chatting in here about birthdays - mine is in June, but I was always the youngest in my class too, not sure why. I wasn't held back or anything, even though I wanted to be. Where I went to school, we had 3yr old preschool, 4 yr old preschool, kidnergarten, and then 1st grade. I never knew that some places had another grade between K and 1.

Hello, My real name is Amy. I am a huge Harry Potter Fanatic, and have been for some time. I am from California, and 26. My b-day is febuary the 5th.

I've been dropping in here from time to time, and find this site wonderful but overwelming. There is SO much posted in one day, and you sort of feel like you've gotta read everything in the thread before posting any thoughts of your own. But everyone has such great input so I suppose (hope) you get used to that overwelming feeling after awhile. Nice to be around other fanatics anyway. :-)

For a point of reference on the school/age issue, here in Colorado Springs the cut-off date for starting school is September 15th. School usually starts in the middle of August, this year will be Aug. 19th. I had about three students this year start kindergarten at age four and half. So these kids will still be five when they go to first grade, but will turn six soon after. A friend in Anchorage told me that his son, whose birthday is in July, had to wait a year for kindergarten because their date is June 1st.

Thank you for all your detailed answers. In Singapore the cutoff date is simple and easy to remember: 1st January. Everyone born in a year is in the same grade (not counting those that stay extra years or start later). The school year starts in January and ends in November, with short breaks in March and September and longer ones in June and December. I have yet to figure out the American school year, which I think starts in the middle of nowhere in the year and has a two month long summer break somewhere in there.

Kimiraikkonen, your post made me laugh. Does our school system really look that confusing? I think the reason it "starts in the middle of nowhere in the year and has a two month long summer break somewhere in there" is because of how life was when schools were started up way back in the 1700's. Children needed to be available to work on the farms during the summer so that the family could raise animals and harvest crops for food. During the winter months, they weren't needed for farmwork, so they were allowed to go to school.

Alright, I wanted to hold out and be #600, but that isn't gonna happen :-)

I am Denise S(tudent) (as opposed to Denise P[arent] who is a moderator [-er?] while I am not; figured I should clear that up). I am 19 and have just come home to MD from my first year of school in Randolph-Macon Woman's College in VA. My Harry Potter mania has developed to frightening proportions since I have become a member of this forum (the week after the 2nd movie came out) and am sorely disappointed that I must now view the forum via a 56K dial-up modem >:-(.

My other hobbies include reading, video games, travelling, atypical languages, and watching thunderstorms. I have a dog and a cat and a little brother who is now taller than me (:-/), and I am leaving for Japan in 7 days, and there are no words to describe how excited I am to be going :-).

Does this work ? I have just become a new member - I hope... For about six weeks, I thought I could join this group - until HP # 5 comes along, that is... You see, I live in Sweden, and I read the HP-books in both English and Swedish. The Swedish translation will not be released until next year - sad, but true - and as for the English books, it's the "adult pocket edition" I read. So which ever of these I first can lay my hands on, I will read - but until that; no HPL for me. I will not risk any spoilers ! As for myself, I'm a grown man, 37 years old - but I still like the Harry Potter-books; and why not, I'm the same age as J. K. Rowling... Well, now I'm going to post this message - my first ever - and I can only hope that it will work...

When Kathy Korengold mentioned it in her post #578 above on this thread, Sam (rettoP yrraH) just could not hold back on his feelings and evaluation of the "satanic" label that some have attached to the Harry Potter series. Most who have been around this Forum and have read most of the threads would laugh at Sam's way of poking fun at the "satanic" issue. I hope that those who read Sam's post will laugh with Sam and the rest of us.

Hey, Kip just recently reminded me that I haven't posted on this thread yet, a fact that I completely overlooked in my zeal to share my HP-mania.

Hi! The "S" stands for Sarah, the "E" stands for Elizabeth (my middle name), and the "Jones" stands for...something...I forget! :-)

Anyway, I'm a 22 Oklahoma resident and have just finished my senior, though next to last, year of college at Oklahoma State University where I'm going after a double major in Cell & Molecular Biology and Microbiology. I hope to eventually become a Genetic Counselor as I love Genetics and, well, counseling, duh! I got hooked on Harry Potter after my little brother, the other Potter-fanatic in our family, forced me to watch Sorcerer's Stone with him, which peeked my interest, and then found the Lexicon which made HP an addiction (Thanks Steve!)!

It's been terrific to share my ponderings with other fans and take part in such interesting debates. Thanks guys!

Nope, Penny, unfortunately not. But it does look just like one of my two cats, Kender. It was sent to me by a friend during a week in which I was really sick and rundown and I thought it just really fit my mental state at the moment so I put it up. It certainly does remind me of my Kender though, she sleeps curled around her food dish all the time. My other cat is named Precious because she has these big round eyes like those Precious Moments cartoons.

Hiya everyone, I'm new (I signed up yesterday) and I've really enjoyed reading the threads I've gotten to so far, even if I have added some kind of dumb posts to them...

I'm 25, and yet another female from California, and I started reading Harry Potter in late 2000 after I'd lived in England for about a year and a half. I read the books first, and then got the Stephen Fry audio tapes, which I continue to listen to incessantly.

Anyway, everyone here seems really nice and clever, so I'm looking forward to being part of the forum.

Tell him that if he really love you to accept your challenge to read all four books with a clear and unbiased mind. If he does that, he will soon find that the books were not necessary written for children, but for JKR herself. If he does it with an unbiased mind, I believe that he will be fighting you for Book 5 when it is released on June 21st. Make sure he starts with Book 1 and reads them in order.

I am not trying to cause a split in your relationship, but if he is not willing to do that, maybe he is not the type of friend you need. You should never feel embarassed by reading something or discussing something that you like. You can read through this Forum and you will find that we have a very close and supportive family worldwide, including Malaysia.

It's nice; this Forum works normally again - but now I have only one week left to be here ! And there is something I would like to share with you all - although I'm not sure this is the proper place to do so... And I don't expect you to believe me, but I swear it's the truth ! Many years ago, probably before even J.K.R. knew about Harry Potter, I (yes, me), started to write a book about a boy who was going to a boarding school for magicians ! I only wrote six chapters - then I run out of imagination - but IF I had been able to finish that book; then it would have been I who had wrote "Harry Potter" ! How about that...?

Hello. This is my first time; so I hope I'm doing this right. I'm 27 year old elementary/middle school teacher in Texas and I really started reading Harry Potter last school year when our English teacher taught it to our older classes. I got so hooked that I have read all of them and am now rereading them before I get the fifth one.

I’m so glad the Forum’s back! (Although it seemed to have a relapse yesterday). I didn’t know how much I loved it till I couldn’t get my daily fix. I thought I’d do the polite thing and introduce myself before posting elsewhere. I’ve been content to mainly observe quietly since joining...uh...6 months ago(!), but I decided I’d like to join in more, especially with this growing knot in my stomach that I hope will go away after the 21st! It’s not helped by the fact that I work in the book section of a department store and have been taking OoP preorders all week!

Hi, I just realized that I never posted here before. I'm Abby, 19 (today!), female, from Louisiana. I'm going to be starting my second year of college at the end of August. At the moment, I'm a history major and library science administration minor. However, my true ambition is to be an Egyptologist. That's my other obsession :-).

I've been around since just about the beginning of the forum, but I never even registered until around January. I'm very quiet and shy, but you wouldn't believe me if you've ever spoken (or typed, rather) to me in the chat room.

I read a great deal, but I was reluctant to read the Harry Potter books at first. Mainly because my mom recommended it, and books she recommends to me, I rarely enjoy. But I started reading them in May 2000, and I've been hooked ever since.

I'm from Port Arthur. I teach in a Catholic school here. We read Chamber of Secrets with our 5th and 6th graders. When they finished it, the movie was just coming out in the theathers and I arranged a private screening for them at the movie theater. They loved all of it and they were able to pick out all of the differences between the book and the movie and what they had left out. They are pumped up about next year and next book.

I had no interest in reading a "kids book" until My daughter got punished and her punishment was to right me a paragragh (shes on two differances between the book and the movie.Well, needless to say I started PS myself so I knew what the diffrences where. I have not announce it yet; however I will be placing everyone on a moderated status beginning at 12:01 am BST (British Summer Time) Saturday 21 June 2003 which is when the book officially goes on sale in London. All members and guest will remain in that status until the first part of next week and I have not determine that time and date as of this moment.

What this will mean is that the Hosts of this Forum will have to release a post before it is allowed on this system. This would allow you to still read the Forum. You would be more than welcome to post to a thread that does not concern Book Five.
