Edited by Kip Carter Jan 12, 2006 12:35 pm

Start at the bottom and work your way up! Enjoy and discuss away, I'm off to lunch!

JK Rowling says: That's it, everyone. There have been sixteen thousand questions, so I'm so sorry if yours hasn't been answered, but hopefully somebody else did it for you. I've really enjoyed it, hope you have. Back to the next chapter now... lots of love xxx Bobby: Any thoughts about a prequel series?
JK Rowling replies -> No, no prequels here. You won't need them by the time I've finished, you'll have all the back story you'll need!

miggs: Is there going to be a new minister of magic in the next books?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes. Ha! Finally, a concrete bit of information, I hear you cry!

Kaidi MacKay: Dumbledore is getting older, will it be alot harder for him to fight Lord Voldermort this time around?
JK Rowling replies -> He is getting older, but he didn't do badly at the end of 'Phoenix', so there's life in him yet!

JK Rowling says: I'm sorry, we're running out of time... how about three more questions?

Kings Park primery school: what will happen to hagrids half brother?
JK Rowling replies -> You'll find out in book six. Luckily he's become a little more controllable.

AjXTee: How long does it take you to plan a book before you even start writing? Or do you just plan as you go along?
JK Rowling replies -> It's hard to say; book six has been planned for years, but before I started writing seriously I spend two months re-visting the plan and making absolutely sure I knew what I was doing (learning from my mistakes - I didn't check the plan for 'Goblet of Fire' and had to re-write a third of the book.

Damaged: Will Winky ever recover?
JK Rowling replies -> Poor Winky... she'll never be entirely cured of her Butterbeer addiction, I'm afraid.

HarriFreak: Who is the 'one that never will return' deatheater?
JK Rowling replies -> You have to work it out, but a lot of fansites have got it right.

Vicky from Bishop Walsh RC Comprehensive - Sutton Coldfield: How do you react when your books/movies are criticized by critics? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> It depends what they say. Sometimes I agree with the criticism, though I can't say that's fun. It also depends who it is. There's a vast difference between being criticized by someone you really admire (which has happened) and someone who you don't admire at all (which doesn't hurt!)

Catheldral school: Will wormtail ever pay harry back?
JK Rowling replies -> You'll see... keep reading!

SnapesForte: Is Mad Eye Moody the real Moody this time? And if he is, is he up to something fishy? Because he's acting too muhc like Crouch jr - sniffing food etc
JK Rowling replies -> It's the other way around - Crouch Jnr. acted just like the real Moody.

Tanya J Potter: If you could change anything about Harry Potter what would it be?
JK Rowling replies -> There are loads of things I would change. I don't think any writer is ever completely happy with what they've written. One of these days - once seven is finished - I'll revise all seven books.

pablo: If Harry dies in the ending of the books, will Voldemort be invincible?
JK Rowling replies -> Pablo, I can't possibly answer. You'll have to read book seven!

eastbrook4: why did Harry have to split up with Cho Chang?
JK Rowling replies -> That's life, I'm afraid. They were never going to be happy, it was better that it ended early!

Joshua from Navigation Primary School: How were you involved in making the Harry Potter films and did Hogwarts look like you had imagined it? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> Hogwarts looked just as I imagined it. It was the most bizarre experience when I walked onto the set of the Great Hall; it really was like walking into my own brain.

Harry: Has Voldermort any children
JK Rowling replies -> No. Voldemort as a father... now that's not a nice thought.

Megan: Is there a link between Snape and vampires?
JK Rowling replies -> Erm... I don't think so.

Cookie246122: Why did you kill Sirius? It made me very sad Sad
JK Rowling replies -> I'm really, really sorry. I didn't want to do it, but there was a reason. If you think you can forgive me, keep reading, you'll find out. [I feel really guilty now].

book: why did voldemort pick harry and not neville
JK Rowling replies -> Dumbledore explains this in 'Order of the Phoenix'. Voldemort identified more with the half-blood boy and therefore decided he must be the greater risk.

dsm: Are Harry's powers going to get even greater?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, he's really progressing as a wizard now (which is lucky, because I know what's in store for him).

Hannah from St Malachy’s Primary School - Armagh: Did you feel the actors suited the characters of your book when you met them? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, I did. Emma Watson in particular was very, very like Hermione when I first spoke to her, I knew she was perfect from that first 'phone call.

gazza: will harry become head master of hogwarts
JK Rowling replies -> I'm not sure I can see Harry in an academic career, he's seen so much action!

Class A.G: Did you base Voldermort on any real people? If so are you related to them?!
JK Rowling replies -> lol No I didn't base Voldemort on any real person!

novell: I find moaning myrtle is the saddest character in your books, inspiring a mixture of revulsion and pity. Does she play any further part?
JK Rowling replies -> You do see her again. Don't you like her? I know she's a bit revolting, but that's why I'm so fond of her.

katrin: What does it feel like when kids tell you that it's thanks to you that they started to read?
JK Rowling replies -> Nobody could possibly say anything that pleased me more. It's the most wonderful thing to hear.

LRGS School: Which character do you most dislike ?
JK Rowling replies -> Probably Uncle Vernon.

class 14: If you were a animagus which animal would you be? and why?
JK Rowling replies -> I gave Hermione my idea animagus, because it's my favourite animal. You'll find the answer in the Room of Requirement, Order of the Phoenix!

Madina: are you planning to ever visit Russia?there are a lot of young fans dreaming about meeting you!
JK Rowling replies -> I'd love to visit Russia, it's a long-standing ambition, so you never know! My son's still a bit young for long journeys, though, he's not one year old yet.

Magwitch: If you could be any female character in harry potter and the Philosopher's stone which one would you be
JK Rowling replies -> Hermione. Definitely not Pansy Parkinson.

Ali: Why specifically does Dumbledore trust Snape?
JK Rowling replies -> Another excellent and non-answerable question. I shall merely say that Snape has given Dumbledore his story and Dumbledore believes it.

Kings Park primaery school: which position would you like to play if you played quidditch?
JK Rowling replies -> Who wouldn't want to be Seeker? But I think I'd be dreadful at Quidditch, I'm not sporty, I'm not great with heights and I'm clumsy as well. Neville would be about my standard.

Maidenhead Library: Why did you choose to do books about wizards?
JK Rowling replies -> It chose me... the idea just sprang into my head and I knew I had to write it.

Majeed from Bristol Grammar School - Bristol: To what extent did you conceive Harry Potter as a moral tale? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> I did not conceive it as a moral tale, the morality sprang naturally out of the story, a subtle but important difference. I think any book that sets out to teach or preach is likely to be hard going at times (though I can think of a couple of exceptions).

Luisa: Is Draco an only child?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes. You wouldn't want more Dracos, would you?!

bubbles: if you were harry potter for a day what would you do?
JK Rowling replies -> If I, personally, were Harry Potter I think I would go and hide somewhere, but that's because I know what's coming!

Sussie: Does Harry's eyecolour become important in the future books, like we've heard?
JK Rowling replies -> No comment!

Bradley y4 Griffyndor: Why did you call the school Hogwarts
JK Rowling replies -> I tried all sorts of different versions of the name and then this word floated into my mind and I knew it was the right one.

Lucy: what happened to worm tale?
JK Rowling replies -> You'll find out in book six.

bibwhang: Will Ron ever get on the Gryffindor quidditch team?
JK Rowling replies -> Well, he's already there! The question is, whether the new Quidditch Captain will allow him to stay!

Siriusstar: Is Remus a pureblood?
JK Rowling replies -> Half blood.

julesrbf: Where did you come up with the word "muggle"?
JK Rowling replies -> I was looking for a word that suggested both foolishness and loveability. The word 'mug' came to mind, for somebody gullible, and then I softened it. I think 'muggle' sounds quite cuddly. I didn't know that the word 'muggle' had been used as drug slang at that point... ah well.

spud: What type of books did you read when you were younger?
JK Rowling replies -> Anything; books for adults and children alike.

Krish: Do you think that the films reflect well on the books?
JK Rowling replies -> I think they're pretty faithful to the books. Hogwarts looks just as I imagined it; I had a lot of input on how the various locations look.

Debbie: What will Ron's job be when he leaves school?
JK Rowling replies -> Well, assuming he lives to leave school... I'm not going to tell you Smile

faye109: Is 12 the maximum possible number of OWLs one can achieve?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, I think it is off the top of my head.

kai: Where do wizarding children go to school before Hogwarts?
JK Rowling replies -> They can either go to a Muggle primary school or they are educated at home. The Weasleys were taught by Mrs. Weasley.

zwimmey: Have you considered writing childrens' science fiction, or will you move on to a completely new genre?
JK Rowling replies -> I don't think I'd be very good at science fiction; you need to know some science! Probably a completely different genre.

Kyla: What made Sirius decide to send Snape to the Willow?
JK Rowling replies -> Because Sirius loathed Snape (and the feeling was entirely mutual). You'll find out more about this in due course.

Leanne from Eastbrook Primary School - Hemel Hempstead: If you could spend a day in real life with one of your fictional characters, who would it be and what would you do? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> I think I'd most like to spend a day with Harry. I'd take him out for a meal and apologise for everything I've put him through.

Luisa: How old are Charlie and Bill Weasley in relation to their other siblings?
JK Rowling replies -> Oh dear, maths. Let me think. Bill is two years older than Charlie, who is two years older than Percy.

Phoenix_Tear: Do you ever get a dream which helps you in writing the Harry Potter series?
JK Rowling replies -> No, and I wish I had! I did once have an incredible dream about Nicholas Flamel, though.

Saskia: Hagrid mentioned he`s allergic to cats in PS why has he never sneezed when Crookshanks was around?
JK Rowling replies -> He's never around Crookshanks very much. I'm allergic to cats and I can be in a room with one briefly. But of course, Crookshanks isn't all cat. Read 'Fantastic Beasts...'!

RAXTA: How did you invent the sport 'Quiddicth'
JK Rowling replies -> I sat in a hotel room after a row with my then boyfriend and invented it. Looking back, I can understand why I liked the idea of Bludgers.

amanda: i want to be a writer, any tips
JK Rowling replies -> Read as much as you can. Keep writing and then throwing it away until one day you do something that you don't think belongs in the bin. Stick to writing what you know about. Don't give up.

Will: What is your favourite magical beast
JK Rowling replies -> The phoenix, definitely.

alixnecole: were you consulted at all when the actors were chosen for the movie?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, Chris Columbus, who was the director of the first film, asked me if there was anybody I thought would be good and I said 'RobbieColtraneForHagrid' in one breath.

Field: Do you plan for GInny to take on a major character role in the next two books?
JK Rowling replies -> Well, now that Ginny has stopped being mute in Harry's presence I think you can see that she is a fairly forceful personality (and she always has been, remember Ron saying that she 'never shuts up' in Chamber of Secrets)?

Fiona from St Richard’s Catholic College: Hubble, Bubble, Toil & Trouble, Answer this question for which I have trouble, Frogs legs, bat wings, cow dung bell, How do you come up with all of those spells? Easter, Birthday, Christmas cards 'cause I have found it really hard! ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> Sometimes I use elements of 'real' spells that people used to believe worked, but mostly I make them up.

Adele: Who are the two "unknown Gryffindor girls" in Harry's year?
JK Rowling replies -> Oh, I've just understood what you mean. I haven't got the notebook to hand and I can't remember! That's terrible. I'll try and remember before the end of the chat!

bertieana: Will we be seeing Krum again any time soon?
JK Rowling replies -> You will see Krum again, though not soon.

Ernie: I wonder if you can let us know what form will Professor Snape's Boggart and Patronus take? I am very curious.
JK Rowling replies -> Well, I'm not going to tell you Ernie, but that's because it would give so much away. I wonder whether Ernie is your real name? (It was my grandfather's).

Andrews: Does Voldemort die in the last book?
JK Rowling replies -> Now, do you really really think I'd answer that?!

Cris: One answer we're all longing for: How's the writing of book 6 going and when will it be released?
JK Rowling replies -> I can't say when it will be released [load groan that JKR can hear from here] because that's down to my publishers. But it's going really well. I am loving writing it.

starlinguk: Do you believe in prophecies in real life?
JK Rowling replies -> No, I don't. And even in the wizarding world, as McGonagall explains in Prisoner of Azkaban, true Seers are very rare.

katty: if you were to have a magical power what would you chose to have apart from the ability to write cos yyou;ve already got that
JK Rowling replies -> I would like to fly. And sometimes to turn off other people's voices.

Persia: If a muggle looks at hogwarts what will they see? love Persia
JK Rowling replies -> Nice name, Persia. They will see nothing but a ruined castle with large signs on it saying 'keep out, dangerous building.'

renata: What happened between hermiona and viktor krum during the summer?
JK Rowling replies -> Ron would like to know that, too.

Helen from Ulverston Victoria High School - Cumbria: Do you realise Harry & co sit on their broomsticks backwards? You can't balance like that? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> lol You clearly haven't read 'Quidditch Through the Ages', or you'd know about the cushioning charm! Buy it at once, it's for charity!

HPFreak7: How are muggle parents convinced to let their kids go to Hogwarts, a strange place they never heard of before; and wouldn't they think it was a practical joke?
JK Rowling replies -> In the case of Muggle parents, special messengers are sent to explain everything to them. But don't forget that they will have noticed that there's something strange about their child for the previous ten years, so it won't come as a complete bolt from the blue.

ashvital: Which of your books does your daughter like best?
JK Rowling replies -> It would be between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. She likes ACTION!

Chibimono: Do you have any future plans in particular for Draco Malfoy?
JK Rowling replies -> I've got plans for all my characters. Actually, this is a really good place to answer a question about Draco and Hermione, which a certain Ms. Radcliffe is desperate to have answered. Will they end up together in book six/seven? NO! The trouble is, of course, that girls fancy Tom Felton, but Draco is NOT Tom Felton! (My daughter likes TF very much too, because he taught her how to use a diablo)

Amy: What did Dudley see when he faced the Dementors in book five?
JK Rowling replies -> Ah, good question. You'll find out!

hanna: How did you feel when your first Harry Potter book came out?
JK Rowling replies -> Elated, ecstatic, extraordinarily happy!

Josh from Cottenham Village College: Right at the beginning, when Voldermort tried to kill Harry, how did Voldermort and Harry both survive? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> That is the crucial and central question and if I answered it there would be hardly any point writing books six and seven... so I won't!

kelly_holland: When you turn into an Animagus, can you choose what animal you become? Or does this get "assigned" to you?
JK Rowling replies -> No, you can't choose. You become the animal that suits you best. Imagine the humiliation when you finally transform after years of study and find that you most closely resemble a warthog.

queenmarion: I noticed in the Black Family tree that everyone is named after a constellation. Is this intentional? Does this have any bearing on the plot?
JK Rowling replies -> It's just one of those family traditions, although Narcissa breaks the trend. I had always thought of her as 'Narcissa' so I decided not to change her to match the others when I came up with their names. There's been a lot of speculation that she is in some way linked to Lily and Petunia, because of the flower theme, but I can put that rumour to rest here: she isn't related to them.

Wild Rose: Will we see more of Narcissa Malfoy now that Lucius is unavailale?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, you will.

Echo: Was Percy acting entirely of his own accord in Order of the Phoenix?
JK Rowling replies -> I'm afraid so.

MauraEllen: Did the debt Wormtail has to Harry carry over to Voldemort when he sacrificed his arm to restore his body?
JK Rowling replies -> No. Can't say any more than that!

Adele: Will poor Harry be stuck at the Dursleys' all next summer?
JK Rowling replies -> Not all summer, no. In fact, he has the shortest stay in Privet Drive so far.

Cathedral: Don't want to rune the ending, but will we be finding out more about the significance of the shape of Harry's scar in future books?
JK Rowling replies -> The shape is not the most significant aspect of that scar, and that's all I'm going to say!

Rita: Will Neville have a bigger part to play?
JK Rowling replies -> I think he's already got a much bigger part. Neville has changed a lot as he's become older and more confident. Book five was a real turning point for Neville.

HG: What is Trelawney's middle name (the one with the P)?
JK Rowling replies -> Patricia.

Denise from Blackheath High School for Girls – London: If Harry Potter was a girl, do you think his adventures would have been different? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, I do think they would be different. I imagined Harry as a boy from the start, so I've never thought about 'Harriet Potter', but I'm sure lots of things in the books would change, Ron for a start, he'd have to be Ronalda.

HPFreak7: How did Harry get the Marauder's Map back, when Crouch Jr. had it last?
JK Rowling replies -> Loads of people have asked me this, I knew I should have shown Harry nipping into Moody's empty office and getting it back, but I assumed you'd all know that's what he did. Sorry!

HG: Will we see Moaning Myrtle again?
JK Rowling replies -> Oh yes, I love Myrtle, I couldn't shut her out for long.

Fenny: Will Lord Voldemort get more 'screentime' in the upcoming books?
JK Rowling replies -> You will see him again, but like most evil dictators, he prefers his henchmen to do his dirty work.

mnich: If you had a job in the wizarding world, what do you think you would be?
JK Rowling replies -> I can't think of anything I'd rather do than write, so I suppose I'd write spellbooks!

Arianna: Can we believe everything the sorting hat says?
JK Rowling replies -> The Sorting Hat is certainly sincere.

LizardLaugh: I love Tonks, she's my favorite new character. Will she play a large role in future books and/or in Harry's life?
JK Rowling replies -> Tonks is hanging around. I really like her, too.

Softballchicky32: What is the extent of Hagrid's magical powers?
JK Rowling replies -> Not great! He can do magic to a fairly basic standard and occasionally surprises everyone (himself included) by bringing off more impressive bits of magic. Of course, he is somewhat hampered by the fact that his wand is broken and disguised as an umbrella.

mnich: Was Voldemort born evil?
JK Rowling replies -> I don't believe that anybody was born evil. You will find out more about the circumstances of his birth in the next book.

Fran from Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School: Which character in the Harry Potter books are you most like? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> Hermione when I was younger, definitely. But there's a bit of Harry and Ron in me too.

mnich: Is it true Harry will get a more permanent injury in the sixth book?
JK Rowling replies -> I've read this rumour on the net and I'm not sure where it came from. I don't really want to get into what happens to Harry in book six, but I certainly never said that he would have a 'more permanent injury'.

Sirius Kase: Will we get to know the Grangers? Is Hermione an only child?
JK Rowling replies -> I always planned that Hermione would have a younger sister but she's never made an appearance and somehow it feels like it might be too late now.

Calliope: Are the Muggle and Magical worlds ever going to be rejoined?
JK Rowling replies -> No, the breach was final, although as book six shows, the Muggles are noticing more and more odd happenings now that Voldemort's back.

Jami: Is Harry related to Godric Gryffindor?
JK Rowling replies -> People are always wondering who Harry might be related to. Maybe he is Wink

Delleve: Are there any plans for any more background books like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages in the future?
JK Rowling replies -> Possibly. If I do them, it will be for charity like the first two.

Potter47: Did you come up with "Sugar Quills" from Charlie and the Chocolate factory? I believe there were "Sugar Pencils" in that book.
JK Rowling replies -> Oh dear, I don't know whether I did or not. Not consciously, anyway. But it's not a very difficult idea to come up with; we all suck the ends of pens and pencils (or I do), so it seemed logical to make them taste nice, and at Hogwarts, obviously, they use quills!

snowball: Do you think a film no longer than the first two films can do justice to a book as long and complex as Goblet of Fire?
JK Rowling replies -> I think that they will have to simplify the plot somewhat. Steve Kloves, the scriptwriter, is really good and if anyone can do the essence of the book justice, he can.

Kirsten from Kirkintilloch High School: If Hagrid was a real person and came to your house, what would you cook him for dinner? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> Something like an entire side of beef, I think. And I'm quite good at Yorkshire puddings, so a couple of dozen of them, too.

coolbeans3131: Would you like to see the same actors portray the trio in all 7 movies?
JK Rowling replies -> Yes, I would. I really like all three of them.

Kirk Wilkins: Will you ever publish all your notebooks of information on the series? I am very interested in reading 150 pages on the history of the dementors!
JK Rowling replies -> lol Who said there were 150 pages on the dementors??? I certainly didn't! I don't think I'll ever publish my notebooks. Too many revealing doodlings!

Jangles: Are you going to write books about harry after school?
JK Rowling replies -> Probably not, but I'll never say never because every time I do I immediately break the vow!

Field: Regarding Harrys subconscious feelings, how has it changed from book 1 to book 5?
JK Rowling replies -> Well he's obviously been through a lot since book one and book five was the book when he cracked up a little. In book six, the wizarding world is really at war again and he has to master his own feelings to make himself useful.

polly weasley: Will Harry fall for another girl in book six, or will he be too busy for romance?
JK Rowling replies -> He'll be busy, but what's life without a little romance?

Rorujin: How is Dobby abele to apparate inside Hogwarts if no one else can?
JK Rowling replies -> He's a house-elf, they've got powers wizards haven't got (but wizards have also got powers that house-elves haven't).

Potter47: What is the sixth book going to be called? The seventh?
JK Rowling replies -> It will be called 'Harry Potter and...' something. Catchy, don't you think? And I think I'll follow the same model for seven.

Potter47: Will Harry tell Neville about the Prophesy?
JK Rowling replies -> Harry will tell his nearest and dearest about the prophecy when he's ready. He needs time to digest the news himself first.

Rorujin: Did Wormtail used Voldemort's wand to kill Cedric? Is it why Cedric comes out of Voldemort's wand even though was Wormtail who killed him?
JK Rowling replies -> Correct!

SiriuslyLovinSirius: If we ever see Sirius again, what form will he be in?
JK Rowling replies -> I couldn't possibly answer that for fear of incriminating myself.

Cathedral: Will we be hearing anything from Sirius Black's brother, Regulus, in future books?
JK Rowling replies -> Well, he's dead, so he's pretty quiet these days.

Shannon from St Mary Magdalen's Junior School - LondonHow do you feel when you see children reading your books? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> I feel incredibly proud. Sometimes I want to poke them in the back and say 'guess who?' but I restrain myself. Kelpie_8: Will the two way mirror Sirius gave Harry ever show up again?
JK Rowling replies -> Ooooo good question. There's your answer.

Rita: What happend to Harry's grandparents? Will we ever learn about them?
JK Rowling replies -> They're all dead and not particularly important to the story, although you will find out a little bit more.

Rita: What about Wormtail? Is there hope for redemption?
JK Rowling replies -> There's always hope, of course. You'll find out more about our rat-like friend in book six.

Rita: Whatever happend to Sirius' flying motorbike?
JK Rowling replies -> Ah, good question. You'll find out, but the real sleuths among you might be able to guess.

kylie: What does the "J" in Remus J Lupin stand for?
JK Rowling replies -> 'John'. Boring but true!

hermione 3: ¿will Harry and Hermione will be together?*sight*
JK Rowling replies -> lol Not saying... but you've had enough clues by now, surely?!

Adele: Thanks for the interview! So... will Harry be receiving a second kiss in his last two years at Hogwarts? Wink
JK Rowling replies -> He might well be receiving another kiss (or two) but I'm not saying who the kisser's going to be...

Stacey, 11 from Plymouth: If you got the chance to make a Polyjuice Potion, who would you be and why? And what would you do in the hour time limit? ****BBC1 NEWSROUND COMPETITION WINNER****
JK Rowling replies -> I'd like to be Tony Blair for an hour. I'd call a press conference and announce all the policies I'd like to implement!

JK Rowling says: This is JK herself saying that they were indeed in Gryffindor!

Sirius Riddle: What houses were Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter and Remus Lupin in? Everyone tells me they were all Gryffindor, but I won't believe it unless I hear it from Ms. Rowling herself!
JK Rowling replies ->

kylie: Thanks for writing such wonderful books, Ms Rowling Smile. Just one question: What are Ron, Hermione and Ginny's middle names? Thank you Smile
JK Rowling replies -> My pleasure:) Middle names: Ginny is Molly, of course, Hermione 'Jane' and Ron, poor boy, is Bilius.

JK Rowling says: Hi everyone, I'm here LIVE and ready to answer your questions!

Interesting Question & Answers :
Jangles: Are you going to write books about harry after school?
JK Rowling replies -> Probably not, but I'll never say never because every time I do I immediately break the vow!

Hmm, does that mean he'll survive the series

Then again ...
bubbles: if you were harry potter for a day what would you do?
JK Rowling replies -> If I, personally, were Harry Potter I think I would go and hide somewhere, but that's because I know what's coming!

Oh dear!!

Just to note :

HarriFreak: Who is the 'one that never will return' deatheater?
JK Rowling replies -> You have to work it out, but a lot of fansites have got it right.
I wonder does she mean us? Hee hee

Wow, my brain has gone into hyperdrive will all the new questions generated..... Its also interesting to note what she didn't answer

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 5:23 am (#3 of 111)

JK Rowling replies -> You have to work it out, but a lot of fansites have got it right.

Soooo, she visits loads of fansites, eh? Okay everybody! Spill it, which of you is JKR?

And Charlie is 2 years older than Percy and Bill is 2 years older than Charlie, does that fit our timelines?

And what o what was that two missing Gryffindor girls thing??? She thinks it is too late to introduce Hermiones sister, but there might be two roommates whom never ever got mentioned before????

And so, Remus's J. is not James

And bye the bye, after putting the text to html manually (took me a little more time than I guessed it would...) somebody told me there is a simple function in word for that...
Why do things the easy way if you can do them the hard way, right?

And Fawkes, I feel your pain, not one of my questions got answered either. With 16.000 questions I can understand why, I just don't understand why questions like: "Is ron going to play quidditch" get through?
To who-ever asked that question: Have you read the bloody book???
Luckily JKR gave it an answer we can ponder over...

Pinky - Mar 4, 2004 6:10 am (#4 of 111)

I think she gave us more information than she normally does in chats. Hooray for her! I audibly sighed though when I read the one about Snape and vampires. I'm not sure I really believed it, but it was fun to theorize about.

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 6:52 am (#5 of 111)

There was another one that won the schools comp about sitting on broomsticks.... hmm, we already know the answer! And, how did you feel when PS was published.... again.... wasting a good question on something we already know! *ok rant over*

Mare, perhaps our questions couldn't be answered without giving away the plot

To be fair, she gave a lot of good answers, some interesting but trivial like characters middle names, but good all the same! 'Tis a pity she didn't get the
'Is Dumbledore the Giant Squid?' question, I would have loved to see her reaction!

Pinky - Mar 4, 2004 6:55 am (#6 of 111)

Oh - and what's a "diablo"? I know generically it means "devil", but what did Tom Felton teach her daughter when he taught her how to use a diablo?

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 6:58 am (#7 of 111)

I wondered about that too....

tracie1976 - Mar 4, 2004 7:00 am (#8 of 111)

I'm glad she answered some of our questions but I still want more questions answered but I guess that won't happen until book 7.

icthestrals - Mar 4, 2004 7:04 am (#9 of 111)

OK, do we ask questions about the questions here or go to the appropriate thread? Sorry for being dense. I noticed something about Ron's middle name.

EDIT: I asked my question on the Ron Weasley thread for anyone interested.

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 7:07 am (#10 of 111)

I was thinking something similar, in reagards to dicussing in detail some of the answers.

It might kick start the Ron thread again!

Liz Mann - Mar 4, 2004 8:05 am (#11 of 111)

This was a really good web chat! So many questions were asked that I wanted to know the answers to! A lot of mysteries now solved, including the houses of the Marauders, the ages of Bill and Charlie etc.

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 8:08 am (#12 of 111)

I would say discuss the general information here, so we can blow of some steam and not clutter the Remus thread with 20 posts about how it is Remus John (<---- example). Then take the real interesting information over to the appropriate thread.
I would advise you to copy the question and answer before you start, so we don't confuse the poor souls who missed the chatt. And put in a line that the info is obtained from this chatt-session for the few who didn't knew it was held..

Bye the way I think diablo has to be a diabolo and would be a childrens toy:

And who is Ms. Radcliffe?????

Liz Mann - Mar 4, 2004 8:17 am (#13 of 111)

Someone related to Dan I guess.

Hang on a minute... the answer she gave to Bill and Charlie's ages makes things even more confusing! If Charlie's two years older than Percy, he would still have been at Hogwarts in book 1! In seventh year! And I thought the last time Gryffindor won the Quiddich cup was when Charlie was Seeker, which was seven years before book three!

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 8:28 am (#14 of 111)

That's what I ment when I asked if the answer corresponded with our timeline. When I read the answer during the chatt I already had this feeling that it wasn't right. she gave it out of the top of her head.

which gives us two clues: She is :swallow: wrong, because Charlie wasn't at hogwarts during Harry's dirst year. (so we don't know anything more from this question than before the chatt) And: there is probably nothing strange with the Weasleys ages (like a dead Weasley sibling between Charlie and Percy).

she also said in the chatt that she wanted to revise all the books, so maybe we should make a list of all inconsistencies to help her...
The whole quidditchwinning-Weasleyleaving thing definitaly belongs there.

Unless off course Charlie pulled a Weasley.

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 8:29 am (#15 of 111)

Liz, you're right. Unless Charlie was a particuarly gifted student who went to Hogwarts a year early? Actually, did he do his NEWTS... sorry, no books here. I think he did though. For those calculations Charlie was a seeker in his first year! Very confusing!

I'm thinking on the going to Hogwarts a year early theory, that way he would be three years above Percy at school, been a seeker in his second year & would have left by the time Harry had got to Hogwarts! That, or Percy went a year late!

Loony Lupin, also noted on the 'Who was in what house' Thread, that the question about which house James & Co where in lists Lupin twice, with no mention of Peter.

Question :
Sirius Riddle: What houses were Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter and Remus Lupin in? Everyone tells me they were all Gryffindor, but I won't believe it unless I hear it from Ms. Rowling herself!
JK Rowling says: This is JK herself saying that they were indeed in Gryffindor!

I'd assume that JK read the question same way as myself... I just read it as the four names, but.... perhaps, Peter wasn't in Griffindor after all.... ARGH! So confusing

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 8:35 am (#16 of 111)

O men, o men, o men, that girl obviously wanted to know, just like we do, if Peter was a Gryffindor. And she misspelled her question!

Or... did some higher power changed the question assuming we would all read what we want to read and then >>Boom<< in book 6 he turns out to have been a Ravenclaw after all!

mollis - Mar 4, 2004 8:37 am (#17 of 111)
Edited by Mar 4, 2004 7:43 am

Oh, this is so exciting!!! So much new information!

Unfortunately, it seem JKR may have made a mistake with the ages of Bill and Charlie. If Charlie had started a year early, he would have been seeker the year prior to Harry becoming seeker. However, when McGonnagal and Wood are telling Harry about Quidditch, she says "Heaven knows we need a better team than last year. Flattened in that last match by Slytherin..." (SS Ch.9) We know Charlie Weasley won the Quidditch Cup, so he can't have been on the team that was flattened by Slytherin.

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 8:38 am (#18 of 111)

Or a Slytherin Mare

If it was my question, I'd be kicking myself now!

Mollis, I'm even more confused now!!!

Bash - Mar 4, 2004 8:38 am (#19 of 111)

I agree about that question on whether Ron plays Quidditch Mare! However did such an utterly inane question get through? The mind boggles!

So Remus is a half-blood! And we still don't know which house Wormtail was in. Oh well.

mollis - Mar 4, 2004 8:43 am (#20 of 111)

This will make it even worse, Fawkes.

But, in CH. 10, Wood says to Harry "I wouldn't be surprised if you turn out better than Charlie Weasley, and he could have played for England if he hadn't gone off chasing dragons." So maybe Charlie did lose his last quidditch game? At least it seems Wood played on the team with him. He knows a lot about Charlie and how good he was.

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 8:44 am (#21 of 111)

Well slytherin would be so obvious it wouldn't surprise any-one anymore, now would it?

BTW do me a favour and post the questions you actually contributed on the "what would you ask JKR" thread. I'm very curious what everybody asked.

So basically it all comes down to this: We thought we had gotten some answers, but we end up with more questions the longer we discuss the answers....
Have I told you already how much I appreciate this forum and it's members and how much I should go do serious stuff right now?

Edit: Well thank you Mollis, just what we needed, more confusion!!!

Julia. - Mar 4, 2004 8:48 am (#22 of 111)

ARGH!!!!! I was so excited to find out how old Bill and Charlie actually are, but then I realized that you guys, were of couse right, and that Charlie can't be only two years older than Percy, or he would have been at Hogwarts in Harry's first year. You are also right Mollis, thers has to have been at least one year in beween Charlie leaving Hogwars and Harry staring there, or they would not have been "Flattened in that last match by Slytherin." I've pretty much decided that Bill and Charile can't be too much older than Percy, so I think I'm going with about four years between Charlie and Percy, and, as JKR said, two years between Bill and Charlie

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 8:56 am (#23 of 111)

Mare, here are my questions... a bit lame, but I asked anyways....

So, are you going to tell us, what's beyond the veil Surprised) ?
What is Hermione's wand is made of?
Will Malfoy Senior remain in Azkaban?
What's stopping Voldemort from using the Floo Network to get into the Griffindor common room?

I was tempted to ask about the DIGS theory, but chickened out! Course I thought of loads more once the chat was over!

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 9:03 am (#24 of 111)

Yes, I slammed my head why I hadn't asked if Harry would be using a flying carpet in the future and wether that colony of Hippocampusses would show up?

Loopy Lupin - Mar 4, 2004 9:04 am (#25 of 111)

Argh is right!!! I realize that JKR has a whole world to keep up with, but talk about "reading the bloody book." JUST KIDDING!! But really, was Charlie doing his last year as an exchange student (in Romania, studying dragons?) or something!!!..... I had always pictured Bill as younger than our timeline though (which has him at about 28 or so, or even possibly attending Hogwarts while Lily and James were there) and took the "5 years since I've been here" line in GOF to mean that he was about 22 or so. Also, since he's sort of dating Fleur in OoP, I think younger is better. 22-23 year old dating an 18 year old is ok, but 28-30 dating an 18 year old is a tad icky.

Madame Librarian - Mar 4, 2004 9:35 am (#26 of 111)

First--thanks to Mare for posting that looooong chat! I hope you copied and pasted.

Thanks, too, to Fawkes Forever for the tidy re-cap.

My head is spinning with all the new info. I need time to let some of it marinate.

Do you think JKR's publisher/editor goes over these and points discrepancies (the Bill/Charlie age business) to her, so she can offer a correction? Let's hope it's just that she was answering off the top of her head. I still hold that before the life and popularity of the septology was assured, JKR didn't nail down a lot of things having to do with dates and ages. Little did she know what kind of compulsive detail freaks she had as adoring fans. Ah, well. More to discuss.

Ciao. Barb

septentrion - Mar 4, 2004 9:57 am (#27 of 111)

I join all of you to say it was a very exciting moment, to know SHE was typing on her keyboard at the same moment than you, hoping at least one of your questions will get through to her. I was glad to learn that Snape is probably not a vampire but I'm very curious to know Snape's story, the one he told to DD. *sigh* *sigh again* when book 6 ?

Fawkes Forever - Mar 4, 2004 10:33 am (#28 of 111)

Thanks Barb, It was a pleasure!

Czarina - Mar 4, 2004 12:07 pm (#29 of 111)

Regarding Bill and Charlie's ages -- Rowling could be partially right in saying that there are two years between each of the Weasley brothers (which begs the question, why the one-year gap between Ron and Ginny?), but Charlie could be actually three years ahead in school.

Assuming that everything Rowling says is fact and working backwards: Ron was born in 1980 (fact), which means that Fred/George were born in 1978 (fact, because their birthdays are after Christmas but before summer); Percy is two years older, so he was born in either 1975 or 1976 as being born in October of 1975 still puts him two grades higher than the twins (Angelina is born in Oct 1977 for instance). This means that Charlie could very well be born in 1973 (roughly two years before Percy) and perhaps early enough to qualify for Hogwarts in 1984, while Percy wouldn't arrive until 1987. This makes him leave school in June 1991, the same year as Tonks. Just to finish off, Bill would have been born in 1971 or 1972 and gone to school two years before that. He would have attended Hogwarts 1982-1989, thus Ginny could very well "remember when Bill was at Hogwarts."

The "chasing dragons" inferred by Wood seems to indicate that Charlie was a Seeker for Gryffindor 1990-1991 (his last year), but decided to quit the team in favour of studying dragons. Maybe he was offered a special scholarship for dragon-keeper training that allowed him to leave Hogwarts a few months early -- after Christmas, perhaps. Wood, a dedicated fourth-year Quidditch player, would have seen his captain leaving as a sort of betrayal.

timrew - Mar 4, 2004 1:27 pm (#30 of 111)

Okay, I know JKR would have probably answered, "Wait and see!", but how come nobody asked about Mark Evans?

And I agree with Mare, how come a question as stupid as, "Will Ron get to play Quidditch?" gets through? It makes me think that the questions must be selected entirely at random.

But I'm glad the question, "Is DD the Giant Squid?", didn't get through. Although I'm not a believer of this theory myself, I can imagine the huge disappointment it would cause, if JKR replied, "Of course not!"

Tomoé - Mar 4, 2004 2:41 pm (#31 of 111)

I think "Will Ron get to play Quidditch?" means "Will Ron get to play Quidditch as a pro, after he leave Hogwarts?", but I didn't understand it that way as I read it first time.

That's one of the best chat she ever did, a lot of answers, not so much of already asked questions like "will there be only 7 books?" even if that one was asked again -_- .

I just can't believe I forgot about the chat. -_-

Denise P. - Mar 4, 2004 3:29 pm (#32 of 111)

I was just re-reading the transcript and 2 answers really leaped out at me. The first dealt with Ron.

Debbie: What will Ron's job be when he leaves school? JK Rowling replies -> Well, assuming he lives to leave school... I'm not going to tell you Smile

The second dealt with Harry. gazza: will harry become head master of hogwarts JK Rowling replies -> I'm not sure I can see Harry in an academic career, he's seen so much action!

What struck me about this is that she made the distinction that we don't know if Ron will survive while she didn't do the same with Harry. I would have expected a similar answer to the Harry question. Can we assume this means that Harry DOES survive?

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 4:08 pm (#33 of 111)

Okay, I know JKR would have probably answered, "Wait and see!", but how come nobody asked about Mark Evans?

With 16.000 questions, some-one probably would have, but to be honest, I think lots of the people asking the "I want to be a writer, tips?" and "how did you feel when the book came out" questions are children, who have read the books, are fans, but don't spend entire days at internet reading all previous interviews and picking the books apart word for word, looking for clues and inconsistencies.
I wish she did a chatt session for people who can prove they have an 24 hour HP addiction . I'm afraid all the questions are going to be so good, she will not be able to answer any-one at all, because then she would give half of the books away.

But I'm glad the question, "Is DD the Giant Squid?", didn't get through. Although I'm not a believer of this theory myself, I can imagine the huge disappointment it would cause, if JKR replied, "Of course not!"
I think that's why, in the end, even allthough all forum members would walk through fire to defend the truth of this theory, no-one dares to ask that question. It is much more fun this way.

Bye the way, she said we will have no need for any prequels, does this mean that book six and seven are going to cover the entire Marauder story too? Cool!

PS as far as Ron as possible victim. I'm in denial!

timrew - Mar 4, 2004 4:16 pm (#34 of 111)

I've always said that book 7 will be enormous! And I think JKR has just confirmed it.

Sherbie Lemon - Mar 4, 2004 4:35 pm (#35 of 111)

Quick question everyone. On the chat, JKR is asked:

If you were a animagus which animal would you be? and why?

I gave Hermione my idea animagus, because it's my favourite animal. You'll find the answer in the Room of Requirement, Order of the Phoenix!

Now, she meant to say patronus, right?! But if memory serves, they didn't do patronuses in that chapter, though they eventually got to them in that room, later in the year. Just checked OotP, and they did patronuses in Chapter 27, The Centaur and the Sneak.

Was this a mistake, or was this a hint?

Bash - Mar 4, 2004 4:53 pm (#36 of 111)

The Patronus takes the same form as the conjuror's animgus form.

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 4:54 pm (#37 of 111)

Well she gave Hermione her ideal animagus, read "ideal animagus" together. Hermione was given it in the form of a patronus. That happened in the Room of requirement, not in the RoR as chapter but as in room as an actual place. Like you said already, during DA get togethers. Does that help?

The Patronus takes the same form as the conjuror's animgus form.
Nowhere nowhen is that ever stated, Bash. Harry got the same patronus as his fathers animagus form, and that was something even DD thought remarkable.

Julia. - Mar 4, 2004 5:05 pm (#38 of 111)

Um, Bash, where does it say that the Patronus takes the same form as the conjuror's animgus form? I don't recal that ever happening. As far as I know, we have yet to see a wizard who is an amimagus produce a patronus, so we can't know for sure if that is the case.

timrew - Mar 4, 2004 5:06 pm (#39 of 111)

I've thought this all along. The Patronus is the same as the animagus.

Marè - Mar 4, 2004 5:16 pm (#40 of 111)

I am never sure with you, are you joking?

Sherbie Lemon - Mar 4, 2004 5:17 pm (#41 of 111)

I agree, Julia. I don't think it's neccessary for the patronus to be the same as the animagus form. But you guys are probably right about it being a mistake. I'm sure JKR was typing fast and misread the question. Still, I'm going to read The Room of Requirement chapter tonight, just in case.

Czarina - Mar 4, 2004 5:30 pm (#42 of 111)

Maybe she meant that in the case of Hermione, her Patronus and Animagus are the same and are Rowling's ideal Animagus. This leads me to assume that Hermione (and by extension her classmates) is not going to become an Animagus, so Rowling slipped in the Patronus instead.

Neville Longbottom - Mar 4, 2004 5:31 pm (#43 of 111)

About the Mark Evans question: I know that many people asked this, and I know that someone (no, not me *g*) registered under two different names to submit the Mark Evans question. Pity that none of those questions got chosen, but the question about Myrtle's return twice.

Oh, and Ginny should sue her parents. Ginny Molly Weasley. Really, how stupid does that sound?

I was always sure that the Marauders were in Gryffindor, and I think Pettigrew is, too. I was more interested in Myrtle's house. Well, we might learn it someday. Hopefully.

Loopy Lupin - Mar 4, 2004 6:04 pm (#44 of 111)

I think JKR has said somewhere else that the otter is her favorite animal (for whatever reason), so she just meant that she (JKR) would be an otter if an animagus.

scully jones - Mar 4, 2004 7:02 pm (#45 of 111)

Maybe she's giving us a not-so-subtle hint that a Patronus takes the form of what a person's Animagus form would be?

Hem Hem - Mar 4, 2004 9:08 pm (#46 of 111)

I've always thought that it would make sense for a person to have the same anigamus and patronus form. Although it would have been nice for her to be clearer....

One thing I couldn;t help but notice is that one of the questions was asked by a coolbeans3131. If that's the same coolbeans as the member here, Congratulations!

As for Percy acting of his own acoord, I'm just so happy to hear it. After so many months (especially at ezboard) of arguing with everybody that Percy isn't being controlled, I cannot belive she would tell us that!

Luanee - Mar 4, 2004 10:33 pm (#47 of 111)

kelly_holland: When you turn into an Animagus, can you choose what animal you become? Or does this get "assigned" to you? JK Rowling replies -> No, you can't choose. You become the animal that suits you best. Imagine the humiliation when you finally transform after years of study and find that you most closely resemble a warthog.

Well, I thought it was mentioned in PoA that Sirus and James transformed into big animals so that they can control Lupin as a werewolf, and Peter was a rat so that he could activate the button to stop Whooping Willow. If they cannot choose their animals, how can they be sure that being animagus can help Lupin?

Hem Hem - Mar 4, 2004 11:40 pm (#48 of 111)

Wild Rose: Will we see more of Narcissa Malfoy now that Lucius is unavailale? JK Rowling replies -> Yes, you will.

Did anybody else read this to mean that Lucius won't be escaping from Azkaban right away? I find that very interesting, considering how it seems that Azkaban is unguarded at this point.

Than agian, maybe we'll be seing more of Narcissa even when Lucius becomes available again, and she just wanted to give a concise answer.

The Great Abbycadabra - Mar 5, 2004 1:27 am (#49 of 111)

Neville, assuming Ginny is merely a nickname, then Molly doesn't sound quite so odd. Say her name is Virginia, then Virginia Molly Weasley doesn't sound quite as awkward as Ginny Molly Weasley. Of course, that's just me making assumptions.

Nathaniel Shafer - Mar 5, 2004 1:29 am (#50 of 111)

I'm excited to read the "possible" background books she might write like "Quidditch Through The Ages." I need something to hold me over between the novels.

Devika - Mar 5, 2004 6:02 am (#51 of 111)

I loved the chat! I really wish of course that stupid questions like Ron playing Quidditch hadn't gotten through! Well.... I did send in the Mark Evans question. In fact that was the only one I sent, but it seems no one else's Mark Evans question got through either!

scully jones - Mar 5, 2004 6:56 am (#52 of 111)

About the animagi form... I think they just wanted to learn how to be animagi so they could change form with lupin every month... And then the size thing was just a side bonus.

haymoni - Mar 5, 2004 6:59 am (#53 of 111)

I noticed that a number of the questions indicated that they were award winning or were from contest winners. Many of those questions were about JKR and not the books.

I am assuming those questions were given to her ahead of time while the rest were coming through on the chat.

I would have asked about Mark Evans and the Weasley cousin.

haymoni - Mar 5, 2004 7:02 am (#54 of 111)

chiaojones - I agree - I think Lupin says "James & Remus were able to transform into such large animals that they could keep me in check." I think when they finally learned how to do it, these were the animals that suited them best.

Why they didn't notice that Peter turned into a rat, I'll never know.

scully jones - Mar 5, 2004 7:08 am (#55 of 111)

Yeah, it's like all the forces of good are giving them a huge sign... "HE'S NOTHING BUT A RAT, don't trust him!!!" And they're just like... Oh Peter's a rat.... Okay... He can open up the tree for us!

coolbeans3131 - Mar 5, 2004 7:22 am (#56 of 111)

One thing I couldn't help but notice is that one of the questions was asked by a coolbeans3131. If that's the same coolbeans as the member here, Congratulations!

Thanks Hem Hem! I submitted about 15 questions. I thought my other 14 were better, but hey, JKR answered it! WooHoo!!

BTW, I liked the Percy/polyjuice/imperius theory, so I'm a little disappointed about that. :-(

sarah lou - Mar 5, 2004 7:27 am (#57 of 111)

When JKR said that the clever readers might have worked out what happened to Sirius' motorbike, I was at a bit of a loss - can anyone shed any light on this?

coolbeans3131 - Mar 5, 2004 7:29 am (#58 of 111)

Since Hagrid's the last one to have had it, might it be in the Forbidden Forest?

Tomoé - Mar 5, 2004 10:34 am (#59 of 111)

I believe either Hagrid give Dumbledore the motorbike for safekeeping, or Hagrid get it back to Sirius's "place" (not 12GP, but the house he bought himself with his uncle's money).

I've always thought it strange that Harry's Patronus is a stag, and his father's Animagus was a stag. That is why I believe that the Animagus is the same as the Patronus with every wizard. Harry has inherited the stag form from James; and if he ever were to become an Animagus, then I'm sure he would be a stag.

I don't think JKR slipped up, so much as let a tiny cat out of the bag, by calling Hermione's Patronus her, 'Animagus'.

Let's hope in book 6, Harry asks Lupin if James could produce a Patronus, and what was it's form? I can imagine Lupin's reply, "Why, it was the same as his Animagus form, of course, a stag!"

timrew - Mar 5, 2004 12:45 pm (#61 of 111)

Sorry, too late to edit the above! I forgot to mention an article in my paper today about the JKR Question/Answer thing.

The paper said that JKR answered 16,000 questions on Harry Potter in one hour. I make this about 4.5 questions and answers per second. She must be one hell of a typist!

Surely, even the most incompetent of journalists should have realised that, even though 16,000 questions were submitted, it would be a little difficult for JKR to answer them all, even if she was sat at her computer all week!

Sherbie Lemon - Mar 5, 2004 1:05 pm (#62 of 111)

I think, following Sirius' death, the motorbike will be given to Harry. Perhaps Hagrid or Dumbledore were holding onto it for safekeeping, until Sirius' name could be cleared. Now that he's dead, it would only make sense that his godson would inherit it.

Pinky - Mar 5, 2004 3:58 pm (#63 of 111)

Congratulations, Coolbeans! Wow - one of our very own members got to ask JKR a question. The Lexicon Forum was represented. WooHoo!!!!

Hem Hem - Mar 5, 2004 6:15 pm (#64 of 111)

Devika said: "I really wish of course that stupid questions like Ron playing Quidditch hadn't gotten through!"

You're right that it's frustrating when the valuable interview time is wasted on obvious and idiotic questions!

However, that particular question had a very insightful answer... " The question is, whether the new Quidditch Captain will allow him to stay!" Ron will not be the Quidditch Captain next year, it would seem. I know some people on the quidditch and Vote theads thought maybe he would be.

MoaningMyrtle101 - Mar 5, 2004 10:14 pm (#65 of 111)
Edited by Mar 5, 2004 9:14 pm

The two questions that made me happiest:

novell: I find moaning myrtle is the saddest character in your books, inspiring a mixture of revulsion and pity. Does she play any further part? JK Rowling replies -> You do see her again. Don't you like her? I know she's a bit revolting, but that's why I'm so fond of her.

HG: Will we see Moaning Myrtle again? JK Rowling replies -> Oh yes, I love Myrtle, I couldn't shut her out for long.

I was literally jumping up and down when I read that!! We see Myrtle again!!

Neville Longbottom - Mar 6, 2004 3:16 am (#66 of 111)

Hem Hem, I am not sure if JKR's answer means, that Ron won't be the Quidditch captain. Currently, I even think she was just ironic and it will be Ron.

Thom Matheson - Mar 6, 2004 7:25 am (#67 of 111)

The 2 that jumped out for me was the Ron dying thing, and the new Minister of Magic (resurrecting my Arthur Weasley campaign)thank you all very much. Arthur!, Arthur!. The way that Hermione is constantly, it seems in each book, hung up about the Animagis, it would not surprise me in the least to find that she is practicing the spell in her spare time. Loads of great stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

Czarina - Mar 6, 2004 8:46 am (#68 of 111)

About Ron and Quidditch -- if the statement regarding the Captain was as sarcastic/ironic as I think it was, it would seem that the new Captain is going to be someone close to him. Harry, maybe?

There are only four candidates that I can see for the Quidditch Captain in Bk6. With Fred/George gone, there will be an opening for two Beaters; with Angelina/Alicia gone, there will be an opening for two Chasers. They have a reserve team, right? Those two stand-in Beaters from OoP could be on the reserve team...

Anyhow, the only returning members of the Gryffindor team are: Ron, Harry (if he's allowed to play, which we all assume), Katie Bell (I think) and Ginny.

Katie Bell seems like an obvious choice, since she's the most senior player and has as much experience as Harry. She's a bit clumsy, though, and isn't maybe the Captain-type.

Harry Potter has been on the team since first-year, which is as long as Katie (she would have joined in second year). He is a natural leader and a very good Seeker; he would be an ideal candidate were it not for the fact that he is also the Boy-Who-Lived. Dumbledore thinks that he has too much on his plate already and somehow I don't think it'd be a good idea for the Quidditch Captain to lose so much sleep to dreams about Voldemort.

Ron Weasley is a newcomer and not the best Keeper the team has seen, but he did win them the Cup in OoP. That certainly gained him popularity. He is also the brother of Charlie, a former Captain. If Ron were the Captain, Harry could easily be his Assistant Captain since the two of them work together so much.

Ginny Weasley is another newcomer who is a fairly good Seeker, but will probably end up being a Chaser in Bk6 (Harry coming back as a Seeker and there being two vacant Chaser positions). Thanks to her and Ron, Gryffindor won the Cup. She will be a fifth-year in Bk6, but Oliver Wood was a fifth-year Captain in PS, so it's not impossible for a fifth-year to be Captain. I only add Ginny to the list because Rowling seemed to hint that the new Captain would be close to Ron...who closer than his little sister?

I'll paste this to the predictions thread, too.

Devika - Mar 7, 2004 4:14 am (#69 of 111)

Czarina, I think you have hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what I had thought when I read that.

Another thing that struck me was what she said about Snape's patronus and boggart. Is it such a big secret? I mean what could be so crucial about his biggest fear?? Voldemort, DD, James, Harry, dementors??? What??? Ideas everyone!! I have no imagination!

And the patronus might well be a key to understanding what his inclinations are. I mean if his patronus is a serpent or something, would it mean his loyalties are with Slytherin, or would it mean just mean that he's a dangerous enemy??? Again... Ideas plaese!! I'm really curious about this!! What can it mean??!!Oh God! When will the 6 th book come out??

Fawkes Forever - Mar 8, 2004 1:43 pm (#70 of 111)

After the initial madness, I had some time to calm down & read through the transcript again (& again )

Anyways, a few Q&A's struck me on this reread... about things we will definately get an answer to in Book 6! It's made me want the book even more now.... see below...

mnich: Was Voldemort born evil? JK Rowling replies -> I don't believe that anybody was born evil. You will find out more about the circumstances of his birth in the next book.

Calliope: Are the Muggle and Magical worlds ever going to be rejoined?
JK Rowling replies -> No, the breach was final, although as book six shows, the Muggles are noticing more and more odd happenings now that Voldemort's back.

Adele: Will poor Harry be stuck at the Dursleys' all next summer?
JK Rowling replies -> Not all summer, no. In fact, he has the shortest stay in Privet Drive so far.

Lucy: what happened to worm tale?
JK Rowling replies -> You'll find out in book six.

Kings Park primery school: what will happen to hagrids half brother?
JK Rowling replies -> You'll find out in book six. Luckily he's become a little more controllable.

Another answer that pops out at me is this one ...
Ali: Why specifically does Dumbledore trust Snape? JK Rowling replies -> Another excellent and non-answerable question. I shall merely say that Snape has given Dumbledore his story and Dumbledore believes it.

So Snape has given Dumbledore 'His Story' does that mean his version of events...?
Hmmmm, interesting no?

Fawkes, you double posted, I deleted the first post. Marè

EDIT : Whoops, thanks Marè

sarah lou - Mar 9, 2004 6:08 am (#71 of 111)

I would just like to ask if someone better informed than me could explain one of the questions quoted above: "are the Muggle and Magical worlds ever going to be rejoined?", and the answer, "the breach was final". I wasn't aware that the two worlds were ever joined, or that there was a breach. Any ideas?

Fawkes Forever - Mar 9, 2004 7:22 am (#72 of 111)

Sarah, I'm afraid I don't have my books with me (I'm at at work hee hee), but I think I remember something about the worlds not always being separated....

I think originally, Wizards where seen as the elder members of society & held in high respect. However the Wizarding World began to withdraw somewhat from main society around the same time as Hogwarts was founded, as the Wizarding community began to distrust Muggles. Following on from this we have the Medieval Witch Burings, brought on by the muggles fear of magic. After which both groups went their separate ways & developed their own societies, Muggles embracing science & Wizards, obiously sticking with their magic!

I'm not sure if that's right.... but I remember reading that somewhere. Perhaps someone of you nice kind learned members of the forum would be able to provide some quotes

Tomoé - Mar 9, 2004 7:48 am (#73 of 111)

I don't remember where JKR said it, maybe in one of the History of Magic lessons, in Fantastic beasts or Quidditch through the Ages. Anyway, the parting date is 1692 (the very year of the Salem Witch affair) and the witch burning tradition died out somewhere along the 18th century (this is a historical fact) as a consequence.

firebird - Mar 9, 2004 8:07 am (#74 of 111)

Yes, and that would explain how Muggles have legends and 'fairy tales' about Magical Creatures and Wizarding traditions and the like. If the two worlds were once joined, that is.

Bash - Mar 9, 2004 10:29 am (#75 of 111)

In ancient Egypt, wizards placed curses on tombs to ward off tomb robbers. When Hogwarts was founded, wizards "suffered much persecution." Later, probably at the time of the Norman Conquest, there was a breach in Britain certainly. By HP, all wizards have receded from the Muggle world.

sarah lou - Mar 10, 2004 6:35 am (#76 of 111)

thanks guys. That would definitely be interesting to hear a bit more about, don't you think? Perhaps we'll get some back-story in book 6...

prof sprout - Mar 10, 2004 8:49 am (#77 of 111)

I was wondering is there anywhere on the Lexicon that has all of her on-line chats. I don't know how many she has done, but doing a search last night on the forum, I found the one other one, the one that came out before GoF. Thanks

Dr Filibuster - Mar 10, 2004 12:35 pm (#78 of 111)

Have a look on Quick Quotes. It's a massive collection of Rowling interviews.

A few Potter sites are connected via the Floo Network. See the link on the Lexicon. I can't access that myself, so I do a Google search on "Quick Quotes" Rowling....and it comes straight up.

zelmia - Mar 10, 2004 1:30 pm (#79 of 111)

I can't help feeling rather vindiacted by the verification of the Weasleys ages. I have always disagreed with that particular point on the Lexicon Timeline and even posted something about how Charlie must have just left school the year Ron and Harry begin (1991). So it was really nice to have my "theory" confirmed by Rowling herself. However after doing a rather extensive search of my previous posts, I can find only remarks from the EZBoard:

Remember: Ron says Bill and Charlie have already left. when he meets Harry on the train (PS) . He doesn't say "Bill and Charlie left ages ago" or "Bill and Charlie left when I was little" or anything of that nature.

And don't forget Ginny's remark at the end of CS about wanting ... to come to Hogwarts ever since Bill... In order for Ginny to be able to remember Bill being at school, he can't be that much older than she is, even taking into account that witches and wizards apparently have more clearly formed memories at a much younger age than Muggles.

Finally, in OP, Ron explains that "Charlie, Fred and George always made me Keep for them when they were practicing during the holidays..." I think this makes it pretty clear that the three were on the House Team at the same time. The other thing is that if Ron is that much younger than Charlie, why make him Keep? He would be too little to be any kind of a challenge so there wouldn't be any real point. Since Fred and George are 3rd years when Harry meets them, that means that they have only been on the team for a year. This means that Charlie must have only recently left Hogwarts when Harry and Ron start there.

Gina R Snape - Mar 12, 2004 10:44 am (#80 of 111)

JKR definitely covers information on the split between the wizarding world and the muggle world in both QTTA and FBAWTFT.

And the way she does it, she definitely accounts for old stories of witches and wizards and magical creatures, and so now it's passed into 'folklore.' FB has a really cute entry on Nessy and the failed strugges to keep her secret.

FYI, Choices. This topic now has a thread of its own! Penny L. "Privet Drive: Harry's shortest stay ever" 3/11/04 10:33am

But something tells me DD would literally do everything in his power to prevent Harry from losing the protection Privet Drive affords him.

Rosariana - Mar 19, 2004 10:41 am (#82 of 111)

This chat was amazing! How did you all know ahead of time that it would take place? I would have loved the opportunity to participate but I didn't know about it! I have so many good questions that I think she would be willing to answer. Will she be doing another one before book six comes out? If so can one of the hosts post it somewhere here? Thanks!

Choices - Mar 19, 2004 11:13 am (#83 of 111)

Rosariana - Your comments are good - we need a thread devoted to interviews and articles that are coming up so we can all catch them. Could we start a "news of HP related events" thread so we can stay informed of things like the JKR interview?

septentrion - Mar 19, 2004 11:40 am (#84 of 111)

Hi folks ! If you want to know everything about JKR's interviews, chats, HP related events..., check at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] This site is always amazingly well informed.

SHEla WOLFsbane - Mar 20, 2004 3:00 am (#85 of 111)

Ya know, I do not doubt JKR's ability as a writer... I do how ever feel that she might have under estimated us as the reader though. She said something along the lines that there won't need to be a pre Harry Potter book, because all of our questions will be answered. Ummm, Yeh, I don't think so. Hope so, but don't think so.

Czarina - Mar 20, 2004 7:25 am (#86 of 111)

She probably meant we'd have all the backstory we'd need and all the questions answered for the plot. In other words, we'll know everything SHE thinks we NEED to know to understand the story. She didn't say that all our extraneous questions would be answered. I think she should publish a book to answer them all. She could call it "Fantastic Answers and Where to Find Them"

Madame Librarian - Mar 20, 2004 7:28 am (#87 of 111)

Czarina, I certainly hope JKR reads this thread. Great idea, great title!

Ciao. Barb

Josh from Cottenham Village College: Right at the beginning, when Voldermort tried to kill Harry, how did Voldermort and Harry both survive? ****SCHOOLS COMPETITION WINNER**** JK Rowling replies -> That is the crucial and central question and if I answered it there would be hardly any point writing books six and seven... so I won't!

Has this been discussed anywhere. If it has, could someone tell me where.

If not, I think it should be, since JKR calls it "the crucial and central question."

Marè - Mar 22, 2004 4:38 pm (#89 of 111)

Lily's love saved Harry, maybe it saved Voldemort too...

I don't want to try and guess the answer to that question. It'd wreck the rest of the series if I found out. Razz

FCBarca - Apr 1, 2004 12:03 pm (#92 of 111)

I thought the reason why Voldemort didn't die was because he couldn't br killed? (Except by Harry.) That's what Voldemort thinks, anyway:

And then I ask myself, but how could they have believed I would not rise again? They, who knew the steps I took, long ago, to guard myself against mortal death? They, who had seen proofs of the immensity of my power, in the times when I was mightier than any wizard living? Chapter: 'The Death Eaters'

I'm guessing that isn't the answer. I believe I may know the answer, if that isn't the answer, but it's a bit 'rusty' at the moment, so maybe I'll post it later on. Not that you'll want to hear it, anyway.

Norbert not a common welsh green - Jul 23, 2004 2:33 pm (#93 of 111)

as the curse did damage to Harry (the Scar) maybe it was a bit short of power when it hit voldemort so he didnt die

Gina R Snape - Aug 10, 2004 12:29 pm (#94 of 111)

Hmmmm. I wonder if anyone has ever been killed by their own curse bouncing off someone/something else.

By the way, TLC does have wonderful announcements and other things. But you can research back articles/interviews on the Quick Quotes sister site which is part of the Floo Network.

Luisa: How old are Charlie and Bill Weasley in relation to their other siblings? JK Rowling replies -> Oh dear, maths. Let me think. Bill is two years older than Charlie, who is two years older than Percy.

End of quote

So, if Charlie is 2 years older than Percy, he should have been in his 7th year in Hogwarts when Percy was in his 5th (that is, in Harry's first year)

Lady Black99 - Aug 19, 2004 5:59 pm (#99 of 111)
Edited by Mare Aug 20, 2004 4:09 am

OK So I was never really interested in the ages of Bill and Charlie until I started reading this thread. But the more people wanted to know the more curious I became and so I stared to do some math and here is what I came up with. If I miscalculated some thing I'm sorry and please feel free to correct me.

In SS: Harry-11, Ron-11, Fred &George-13, Wood-15, Percy-15, Charlie-20, Bill-22
In GoF: Harry-14, Ron-14, Fred &George-15, Wood-18, Percy-18, Charlie-23, Bill-25
In OoP: Harry-15, Ron-15, Fred &George-16, Wood-19, Percy-19, Charlie-24, Bill-26

And I'm very sorry its gotten so long but here comes my reasoning If Wood played with Charlie there would be a 5 year difference between them. Since there is a 3 year difference between Harry and Wood that would mean there is an 8 year difference between Charlie and Harry. leaving the one year where Gryffindor lost to Slythering.

Boris the Bewildered - Aug 20, 2004 11:51 am (#100 of 111)

Au contraire, mon frere. Had Voldemort been saved by the love of his mother he might have taken away a different lesson from it all. His witch mother died when he was born and all he was left with was a fear of death and an obsession of conquering it (plus a hatred of muggles because of his father). There must have been a reason for him to kill his entire muggle family and it;s part of what it made him a dark wizard.

S.E. Jones - Aug 20, 2004 3:57 pm (#101 of 111)

Lady Black99, Percy and Charlie's ages don't fit with what we've been told by JKR. She told us in her World Day interview (March 2004) that Percy, Charlie, and Bill were all two years apart (or close to it). You have 5 years between Percy and Charlie when there should only be 2-3 (depending on the months of their births). I doubt the age gap would be just shy of 2 years becuase Charlie had already left school by the time Harry arrived.

Lady Black99 - Aug 20, 2004 4:24 pm (#102 of 111)

Your right S.E. Jones but if u read the books it doesn't work out for them to be only two years apart either. I don't remember where I read it but someone mentioned that she said these facts off the top of her head and in that case she could have miss calculated. I do believe that Charlie and bill are 2 years apart but if Charlie was only 3 years older than Percy then he would have been in Hogwarts Harry's first year there. I figured that if Wood had played with Charlie and Harry hadn't it would have to be a 5 year difference. That is with Wood starting to play in his second year. Well those are my calculations. Fell free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Lady Black99 - Aug 20, 2004 4:25 pm (#103 of 111)

Oh and Charlie would have to have been gone for at least one year for Slytherin to have beaten Gryffindor in the Quidditch cup.

S.E. Jones - Aug 20, 2004 4:29 pm (#104 of 111)

Lady Black, check out the 'Bill and Charlie, how old are they' thread. We actually have come up with some solutions that fit, I do believe....

think that is a rumor started by the lexicon if i am not mistaken.

Tomoé - Nov 13, 2004 1:49 pm (#111 of 111)

No it was from the lexicon, it came from a compilation list on another big Potty fan site, under the what J. K. Rowling said. I don't remember which website though.
