Survey: What is a favorite HP-related Christmas memory or event? (started 12/23/09)

This topic serves as an archive of a thread from the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum as hosted on World Crossing which ceased operation on April 15, 2011. Elanor

(This survey is not meant to ignore any holiday celebration other than Christmas, it's just that Christmas is the only winter holiday we see celebrated in the HP series.)

Please share a Harry Potter related Christmas memory or event, for one --or all-- of these categories:
1)from the HP books,
2) from the HP movies,
3) from your own Christmas/holiday memories that include HP in some way.

Here are mine:
1) HP books: HBP when Fred and George stun a garden gnome, paint it gold, put on a tu-tu and a halo and place it atop the tree as the angel.
2) HP movies: in SS when Harry exclaims in wonder,"I've got presents?"
3) my own Christmas memories: getting The Tales of Beedle the Bard

Edited to add the start date in the title, for uniformity's sake.

What is a favorite HP-related Christmas memory or event? (Post 1 to 14)

I love the descriptions of all the Christmas trees and decorations in the great hall at Hogwarts.

The gnome on top of the tree is so typically Fred and George - I love that.

Personally - getting gifts of wands, Gringotts' coin collection, a time turner, etc. Oh, and the big replica of Hogwarts. I treasure them all.

Happy Christmas to everyone and a wonderful New Year. May all your days be magical. {{{Hugs}}}

Not sure this is a favorite memory per se. But I love that Hagrid is this big guy with a big beard who wears a furry coat in winter, whose birthday is December 6, the Feast of Saint Nicholas. Hagrid provided the winter 'greening' of Hogwarts, hauling multiple whole trees inside for the Great Hall and the entry hall. Hagrid is intimately involved in Harry's Christmas.

So I guess my favorite HP Christmas memory is related to JK Rowling's web site, where she revealed Hagrid's birthday and I put all those little facts together.

There is a Hallmark Christmas ornament depicting when Hagrid gave Harry Hedwig for his birthday. Couched like that Hagrid looks distinctly Father Christmas-like.

I was not aware of Hagrid's birthday falling on Dec. 6, the Feast of St. Nicholas....that's perfect! Thanks for sharing that, journeymom! BTW, I have that same ornament of Hagrid giving Hedwig to Harry...just couldn't leave it in the store!

One of my favorite memories of all from the movies is Harry's first Christmas at Hogwarts--the first Christmas in his memory where he was happy and had friends who cared about him. I always imagine how he must have felt after all those miserable years with the Dursleys, when he was made to feel worthless and probably received things like worn-out old clothes, broken toys that had been Dudley's, and other things no one wanted. Despite the worries over Voldemort, he must have felt like he'd landed in Hogwarts Heaven!

Wonderful information about Hagrid, Journeymom. This is a great idea - I love all these memories.

Thanks for the info, journeymom! I love learning about the "real" Santa Claus. One day I'm gonna pack my elf hat, get a one-way ticket to the North Pole and go live with the Kringles

I love Harry's first Christmas, survey-wise. But I must say for me there is something about Hogwarts and Hogsmeade in general that gives me the "Christmas feeling" as soon as the grounds are blanketed with snow. All warm and toasty, tucked into a booth at the Three Broomsticks with a steamy mug of Butterbeer, what could be more Christmasy, even in February?

I remember that GF went into extra descriptions of icicles with the Yule Ball– Hagrid's hut looking like a gingerbread house with its icing of snow, and it was in OP that Luna made the memorable remark about nargles in the mistletoe, but I think I'd have to give the #1 spot to the caroling suits of armor that couldn't remember all the words. Bewitched suits of armor singing would have been just another decoration in the WW, but to have Peeves assist them when they "forgot" the lyrics put it over the top.

Well, this survey did not generate as muc response/participation as I'd hoped....undoubtedly my own fault for posting it so late in the season when folks were already occupied w/family celbrations.

Thanks to all those who did respond! I enjoyed the memories you shared!

OK, here is a latecomer:

1) I like many Christmas moments in the books, so it is difficult to choose. In DH, it is quite touching when Harry visits his parents' grave on Christmas Eve. Then, if my calculations are correct, it is still at Christmas (Boxing Day?) that Harry meets the Silver Doe and Ron returns. (Snape is apparently spending his Christmas with the portraits in the Headmaster's office.)

It is also a Christmas moment (after the Yule Ball) when Dumbledore makes his "we sort too soon" comment to Snape after Snape confirms his willingness to stay and fight.

One more: Sirius singing at the top of his voice.

2) Not many Christmas scenes in the movies ... I think it is Christmas time when Sirius hugs Harry in the OotP movie. That is really nice.

3) I got my first HP book for Christmas.

No one has asked, but I can also mention my worst HP-related Christmas moment: I wanted to buy the HBP DVD as a Christmas present, but I started too late, and there were not any copies left in the shops.

I like your first choice.

Freshwater, I think a lot of people who would have responded were just swamped with Christmas shopping and plans. Perhaps more will respond if you leave it up.

I sand firm on SS. It is the first time Harry gets presents and feels true affection from people. He also gets the First Deathly Hallow. LPO

Very true, LPO. Not much could have been accomplished without the Cloak! What a great Christmas gift, right at the beginning. Dumbledore doesn't waste time.

I think I misunderstood this one, and certainly I am very late. But that scene in DH, with Harry and Hermione disguised as an old couple at Harry's parent's grave, that is a Christmas present! I had waited with much anticipation for Harry to go to Godric's Hallow from book one. I long ago started a thread on Godric's Hallow. JKR did not disappoint.

And yes, Ron return was another of the best gifts.

Receiving the Invisibility cloak for his first Christmas at Hogwarts was a wonderful tangible gift that he carried through the series. It stayed with him and protected him. A direct connection to the people who loved him.
