It is the ongoing mission of the Ministry of Magic and the Hogwarts Board of Directors to refine and update the curriculum of the school. Please indicate the 3 or 4 spells/charms you would most like to learn from the list of 15 below.

1) Hair-thickening Charm: used on Alicia Spinnet’s eyebrows, causes hair to grow longer and thicker

2) Homenum Revelio: reveals human presence in the target area...will take the fun out of Hide-and-Seek

3) Hot air charm: fires a blast of hot air from the tip of the caster’s wand...handy on snowy boots or wet hair

4) Hover charm: makes an object float in mid-air; Dobby used it on Aunt Petunia’s pudding

5) Impedimenta: stops and object or slows it down

6) Imperio: caused the victim to be completely under the control of the caster, who can make the victim do anything he wishes **Although classified as an Unforgiveable Curse, special dispensation may be granted for exasperated teachers to use this on their unruly students. WARNING: Parents: this spell may prove ineffective on two-year olds and teen-agers.**

7) Imperturbable Charm: creates a magical barrier on an object –such as a door—to prevent eavesdropping

8 ) Impervius: makes the target waterproof or water-repellent...handy when you're tent camping

9) Incarcerous: sends thick ropes out of thin air to wrap around someone or something

10) Incendio: starts a fire...another handy spell when camping

11) Instant scalping: removes hair...never shave your legs again, ladies!

12) Invisibility charm: makes a person or object invisible (example: Headless Hats)

13) Jelly-Brain Jinx: affects the victim’s mental processes

14) Jelly-Fingers Curse: victim is unable to grasp anything properly

15) Jelly-Legs Curse: causes victims legs to be wobbly and unsteady

Certainly #4 for me. Hover charms would be awesome. But, alas, I must go off list for the other 2. Lumos would be very useful, and Augumenta so I wouldn't have to pay for water on my lawn and garden. Also fun for the kids to run through my wand on a hot summer day.

3. Hot air because I'm usually cold. 4. Hover charm because that would be very handy. 6. Imperio with the special teacher dispensation. Though I don't know how useful it would be in a middle school!

Hem-hem. People, it is only H-J spells for now.

12 - Invisibility Charm: would be quite nice when trying to avoid people

10 - Incendio: fire, good

3 - Hot Air Charm: again, fire is good and makes living in the mountains (or misty forest, or windy shores) a piece of cake

What can I say, I like fire. In fact, I'm a fire-horse in Chinese astrology.

edit: 8 - Impervious, so my fire won't go out unless I want it to

I admit it ... I'm evil. I wouldn't have the slightest qualm about using #6, the Imperius Curse, on several of my 8th graders. I would cast it as they enter and lift it as they leave my room, so that they are not driven crazy by having to behave appropriately all day when they want to act like jerks. The only things I would want them to do are come to class prepared, complete their classwork to the best of their varying abilities, and behave respectfully ... not too terrible.

The Hover Charm, #4, would come in handy a hundred times a day, I think. It would eliminate carrying backbreaking loads to and from my car each day, and I could say goodbye to climbing on ladders to fetch and return things from top shelves. Yes, the Hover Charm would improve my quality of life!

The third one is tough. There are times when the Impervius Charm, #8, would come in quite handy ... but I think the Invisibility Charm, #12, wins out over it! I would love to be able to make myself invisible.

4) Hover charm. Pretty much everything in our appartment ends up on the floor and this charm would make cleaning up so much easier.

Impervius. Much needed in this part of the country...

12) Invisibility charm. Sounds very useful to me... But I suspect someone in the house is using it already, when I'm looking for a specific object. I can't see it, even if it is right before my eyes...

Soli, I'm shocked! Using unforgivables on students! Never criticize Professor Snape again! But I must admit that your use of the Imperius Curse is probably one of the most harmless uses of it ever.

I understand, Soli. I was just joking. If I was a teacher I would probably have that kind of fantasies quite often. I suppose that's why I'm not one. You teachers must really have a lot of patience!

You teachers must really have a lot of patience! Especially in April. After our standardized tests the students feel like the school year is over! They have critically important socializing to do.

Sorry Dryleaves, in defense of Soli using an imperious charm does not preclude her from criticizing Snape. He is an insult to our very profession! Though I would love to know his page 394 spell. I know Shadow only the spells listed. LPO

Thom, would you like to choose 2-3 other H-J spells to learn? I can't count Auguamenti on this poll --it was on an earlier one-- and Lumos will come up on a later poll. Because there are soooooo many spells to choose from I'm polling by groups alphabetically (E-G, H-J, K-M, etc.). Eventually we'll have a final poll featuring the top choices from all the spells polls.

My favorite spells to learn would include:

4) Hover charm: makes an object float in mid-air....would come in handy as I move into an apartment in June

6) Imperio: caused the victim to be completely under the control of the caster..... special dispensation may be granted for exasperated teachers to use this on their unruly students.....this would definately get a lot of us in my classroom between now and the end of the school year!

Impervius: makes the target waterproof or water-repellent...I would love to use this on my tent!

10) Incendio: starts a fire...my firestarting skills are inconsistent, so this would be quite handy.

LPO, smile and grin work for most occasions. Sometimes, would be really appropriate ... especially when things get too fired up on the Snape thread.

Other times, seems more like it. You just never know ...

I want spells that cannot be easily replaced by Muggle technology...

12) Invisibility charm: makes a person or object invisible (example: Headless Hats). (For all kinds of purposes.)

5) Impedimenta: stops an object or slows it down. (Useful when something falls.)

2) Homenum Revelio: reveals human presence in the target area...will take the fun out of Hide-and-Seek. (I only play Hide-and-Seek with my children, and I can always pretend that I don't know where they are.)

About Impedimenta ... wouldn't you need to have your wand in your hand and actually catch the person/object in mid-fall? Of course, it would be great to stop a kid who was tearing down the hall at school, running into people and things! As it is, all I have is my whistle, and I hate to blow it in the hall, as it is so loud and ear-splitting.

4, 5, 8 and 12! 8 (Impervius) actually seems like the handiest, I'm surprised more people haven't picked it! And 4 (Hover) would be awesome, if only to recreate Chapter 2 from COS.
