Which is your favorite quote by Albus Dumbledore from books 2-4? Please choose only 1 or 2.

a) CoS 18: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

b) PoA 21: “What we need,” said DD slowly, and his light blue eyes moved from Harry to Hermione, “is more time.”

c) PoA 22: “You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think we don’t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble? Prongs rode again tonight.”

d) GoF 30: “That, Harry, is a matter between Prof. Snape and myself.”

e) GoF 37: “Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory.”

Definitely E. That is the quote that came to mind before I even read the selections. I like the idea behind choosing between what is right and what is easy. Very Dumbledore-ish.

journeymom - Apr 27, 2008 6:04 pm (#2 of 30)

A, It's our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

mona amon - Apr 27, 2008 7:14 pm (#3 of 30)

c) PoA 22: “You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think we don’t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble?. Prongs rode again tonight.”

geauxtigers - Apr 27, 2008 8:45 pm (#4 of 30)

A and C

a) CoS 18: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

This is a statement that simultaneously opens new vistas of potential for an individual, and yet places all the responsibility right where it belongs...with that same individual.

Julia H. - Apr 27, 2008 11:48 pm (#6 of 30)

A) because it is so insightful and true.

E) because it is beautiful.

Honourable mention goes to D).

Dryleaves - Apr 28, 2008 1:26 am (#7 of 30)

A) I think this quote is one you can carry with you through your life and your choices: what does this choice tell about who I really am?

D) Dumbledore trusts Snape and Snape can trust Dumbledore.

azi - Apr 28, 2008 2:48 am (#8 of 30)

E

Anna L. Black - Apr 28, 2008 5:39 am (#9 of 30)

A and C (although E would also get a vote if I could choose more than 2.)

kaykay1970 - Apr 28, 2008 5:41 am (#10 of 30)

A and C

TwinklingBlueEyes - Apr 28, 2008 7:40 am (#11 of 30)

A and E.

Julia H. - Apr 28, 2008 10:32 am (#13 of 30)

Julia's daughter's choice: e).

katrira - Apr 28, 2008 3:43 pm (#14 of 30)

C then E.

wynnleaf- Apr 28, 2008 8:34 pm (#15 of 30)

I think A and C are some of the primary themes of the books and therefore very important quotes, especially since JKR has said that many times, she is sort of "speaking through" Dumbledore.

Verity Weasley - Apr 28, 2008 11:25 pm (#16 of 30)

C and E

Hogwarts Class of 85 - Apr 29, 2008 1:32 am (#17 of 30)

a) CoS 18: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Elanor - Apr 29, 2008 10:05 pm (#22 of 30)

a) CoS 18: ?It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.?

c) PoA 22: ?You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think we don?t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble? ?.Prongs rode again tonight.?

I've always found this sentence very moving but I find it even more so in the light of the DH events and the death or Ariana and Dumbledore's parents.

Elaine2005 - Apr 29, 2008 11:29 pm (#23 of 30)

A and E are my favorites!

Hieronymus Graubart - May 1, 2008 1:04 pm (#24 of 30)

a) CoS 18: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

b) PoA 21: “What we need,” said DD slowly, and his light blue eyes moved from Harry to Hermione, “is more time.”

I should think that c) and e) are greater quotes than b), but since I couldn't say it by heart it cannot be my favourite, can it?

freshwater - May 1, 2008 4:47 pm (#25 of 30)

I would think, HG, that your favorite quote would be the one that appeals to you the most, whether you can repeat it from memory or not. But the choice is up to you....

Hieronymus Graubart - May 3, 2008 12:09 pm (#27 of 30)

What I meant, freshwater, is, that something a cannot remember correctly obviously had no great impact on my mind even if I think this should be recognized as one of the best quotes.

I would not say that Dumbledore's call for more time "appeals" to me, but it is unforgettable, because I had never expected to see a science-fiction-topic like time travel in the Potterverse, and never read a better time traveller story than PoA 21.

Madam Pince - May 3, 2008 1:22 pm (#28 of 30)

a) CoS 18: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Solitaire - May 4, 2008 10:24 am (#29 of 30)

A, of course. It's been on my personal page since I first read it. C is also a good one.
