20 Questions (Vol. IV)

Post  Potteraholic on Tue Mar 29, 2011 5:16 pm

This game was originally posted on World Crossing by shepherdess - Oct 8, 2008 1:11 pm On October 8, 2008

shepherdess posted the following:

I've found this game works well on my family forum, and I think it might be fun here too.

For anyone unfamiliar with the game, it works like this:

Basic rules:
1. Someone thinks of something--a person, place or thing (in this case, HP related, of course).
2. Others ask "yes" or "no" questions to gain information about the subject.
3. Only 20 questions are allowed. If it isn't guessed within the 20 questions, that person gets another turn. If it is guessed, the person who guessed it goes next.

The rules may need to be modified as we adapt the game for this forum. Some things we might want to consider are:
1. Should things like spells, book titles, etc. be allowed as they may be very difficult to identify within a 20 question limit?
2. Should we increase the number of questions to allow for very obscure things?

Tip: I've found it most helpful if, when asking a question, you number your question, so it's easier to keep track of how many questions have been asked.

So I will start the game off, and see if anyone's interested in playing. I'm thinking of something HP related, and you have 20 questions to identify what I'm thinking of. Let the questioning begin!

This thread is now unlocked and ready when needed!

Post  Potteraholic on Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:34 am

On this day, the one before the day the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum on World Crossing is set to close its 'doors' forever, the current 20 Questions game is being run by Julia.

Edit: The last game of 20 Questions was finished on the HPLF-WX site on April 15, 2011 before that old familiar place closed for good. Solitaire won that game. Congrats!

On to the first game of Volume VI of 20 Questions, here in our new home!

20 Questions Vol-III (#2951 to 2957 of 2957)

1. Is it magical? Hm... I will say yes.
2. Is it an abstract concept? In essence, it is an abstract concept. Magic can make it somewhat less abstract.
3. Is this thingy first mentioned in an odd-numbered book? Yes.
4. Is it mentioned in more than one book? A part of it only.
5. Is it mentioned in the first book? No.
6. Is it a "lesson" or "philosophy" about something that Dumbledore imparts to Harry? No, but you are thinking in the good direction!
7. Is it mentioned in Dumbledore's office? Yes, absolutely, but not only there. (I interpret "mentioned" as 'mentioned in the book', not necessarily by a character.)
8. Is it first mentioned in PoA? No.
9. Is it an idea or concept told to Harry by another person? Something like that.
10. Just to be sure, is it first mentioned in HBP? No.
11. Does this have anything to do with a Pensieve? Yes, everything.
12. Is it a memory that Harry sees while looking into a Pensieve? Yes, if you change one small detail in your question

Potteraholic - Apr 14, 2011 10:08 am (#2952 of 2957)

Not a question... just a musing...

Hmmm... so I guess that means all of this thing (a memory?) is first mentioned in DH, and a part of it is mentioned in another book.

Julia H. - Apr 14, 2011 3:42 pm (#2953 of 2957)

Good thinking! If you changed that single small detail in the wording of your sentences, you'd be there!

Solitaire - Apr 14, 2011 7:44 pm (#2954 of 2957)

14. (Is PAH's post a question?) Is it Snape's memories?

Potteraholic - Apr 14, 2011 8:45 pm (#2955 of 2957)

Not a question... just a musing... ~ PAH

Solitaire, not an official question... I'd've numbered it, if it was. As I said, it's just a musing. So your question is #13.

13. Is it Snape's memories? Yes, congratulations, Solitaire! The next game is yours!

I thought 'memories' would be a good choice for the last game in the old place... But it was a bit difficult to give simple yes and no answers. Are a magical person's memories (removed from his head, viewed in a Pensieve even after the person's death) - magical? Are they abstract? Memories are, but in HP they can be - sort of - tangible... Where are they first mentioned? We see all of them (the ones Snape gave to Harry) in DH for the first time, but in OotP, one of them is already mentioned. And of course, the "small detail" was the plural instead of the singular.

Thanks, everyone, for playing, and well done, Solitaire! I look forward to your game over there!

Solitaire - Apr 15, 2011 7:17 am (#2957 of 2957)

Thanks!! I'll see you over at our new home this evening ... and I'll try and think up something good by then! **Waving ** Bye, everyone!
