This topic serves as an archive of a thread from the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum as hosted on World Crossing, which ceased operation on April 15, 2011. It was copied/saved by Julia H. and reformatted/reposted by Potteraholic. ~Potteraholic

What started as a discussion on the Snape Thread got me to thinking about expanding the it to include other characters. A recent discussion about Snape somehow evolved (devolved?) into the topic of what any Polyjuice Potion meant for changing into Snape would taste like, since the Potion inherently requires "a bit of the person you're changing into".

So, the gist of this topic is simple:

What would "essence of __________" taste like?

Dryleaves - Dec 5, 2008 12:06 am (#1 of 164)

Great idea, Quinn!

When I was a child I had to eat a medicine that had a strange, "muddy" pink colour and a sweetish taste that was not good at all (though I think it was meant to be, so that children would like it). I think that could be essence of Umbridge. But I'm not really sure she would actually taste sweet.

Solitaire - Dec 5, 2008 7:46 am (#2 of 164)

It sounds like Pepto-Bismol,Dryleaves. While I can't say I like the taste, I should think essence of Umbridge would taste more poisonous. She is far too evil to have a sweet taste. I can imagine her Polyjuice smelling good (since she tries to project a sweet demeanor) and tasting like tar, or something equally gross.

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 5, 2008 7:49 am (#3 of 164)

I was once served rancid iced tea. Disgusting. I think rancid tea fits Umbridge.

legolas returns- Dec 5, 2008 10:18 am (#4 of 164)

I was thinking maple syrup for Umbridge. Intensely sweet on the surface (pink fluffy cardigan and bow) but it makes me throw up (need I say anything more on the poisonous substance that is maple syrup).

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 5, 2008 11:35 am (#5 of 164)

I was thinking maple syrup for Umbridge. Intensely sweet on the surface (pink fluffy cardigan and bow) but it makes me throw up (need I say anything more on the poisonous substance that is maple syrup). --legolas returns

I love maple syrup (in fact I had yogurt, apples, and walnuts topped with maple syrup for lunch today), but I can sympathize. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S., and real maple syrup was a rarity. Instead, we had a horrible something called "maple flavoring". My school served up these nasty sweet rolls they called Maple Bars with a thick layer of "maple flavored" frosting on top. To this day, I shudder at the thought of them, and for years I wouldn't even try real maple because those things were so foul.

A lot like Umbridge.

legolas returns- Dec 5, 2008 11:50 am (#6 of 164)

I have been to America about half a dozen times. I have had the real and the fake maple syrup. They are both disgusting.

Orion - Dec 5, 2008 12:04 pm (#7 of 164)

For McGonagall, peppermint and dark chocolate.

Swedish Short-Snout - Dec 5, 2008 12:10 pm (#8 of 164)

I think Umbridge would taste overly, artificially sweet with a disgusting aftertaste.

legolas returns- Dec 5, 2008 12:13 pm (#9 of 164)

McGonagall - I would have said something wholesome but with a little bit of lemon aftertaste.

Steve Newton - Dec 5, 2008 1:03 pm (#10 of 164)

How about coffee for James. A little bitter but in the end satisfying.

Sirius? Flat beer? A little edgy and dangerous but...something missing.

Quinn Crockett - Dec 5, 2008 2:59 pm (#11 of 164)

Flat beer. Ha! I think Sirius would be more of a nut-brown ale.

Yeah, I could imagine a minty taste for McGonagall.

For some reason, Hermione makes me think of raspberries. I'm not overly fond of any kind of "berry" taste - not that I won't eat it if it's served to me, it just would never be something I would choose.

legolas returns- Dec 5, 2008 3:05 pm (#12 of 164)

I like the flat beer idea.

What would you flavour Dumbledore/Harry?

Am I mad in thinking pineapple for Hagrid. Scary-looking on the outside but good inside.

Orion - Dec 6, 2008 3:37 am (#13 of 164)

Hermione would taste fresh and clear like an apple. Dumbledore would taste like a complex Thai curry with lots of invisible but strongly tasting unknown spices and ingredients, some of them very hot. Harry would taste wholesome and politically correct like whole-grain bread.

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 6, 2008 6:53 am (#14 of 164)

I think Sirius would be more of a nut-brown ale.--Quinn Crockett

ROFL, yes, nut-brown ale. I like the ale idea.

Am I mad in thinking Pineapple for Hagrid. Scary-looking on the outside but good inside. --legolas returns

That's a good one for Hagrid.

Hermione would taste fresh and clear like an apple--Orion

Ooh, I like that! Perfect!

Elanor - Dec 6, 2008 7:14 am (#15 of 164)

I love pineapple/Hagrid and apple/Hermione!

What about oak-matured mead for Dumbledore? Maybe with a drop of lemon...

legolas returns- Dec 6, 2008 9:11 am (#16 of 164)

I wonder if people would taste different depending on who was drinking them. For example essence of Dumbledore may taste nicer to a good guy but to someone like Lucius Malfoy he may taste very unpleasant due to divergence of ideas?

Solitaire - Dec 6, 2008 3:44 pm (#17 of 164)

Mrs. Brisbee, I love maple syrup, too! In fact, my favorite "fancy" yam recipe is baked yams with maple syrup and pecans ... far tastier than yams swimming in Karo syrup and marshmallows, if you ask me. Comparing Umbridge to maple syrup is a travesty. She can be high fructose corn syrup, if you like. That stuff is sickly sweet AND it has been proven to be dangerous to one's health. Saccharin is another good one for her--really cloying.

I agree about McGonagall. Even though she turned them down, lemon drops (both sweet and tart) would be perfect for her ... as would lemonade (tart but refreshing). Something gingery might be good for her, as well. That gingersnap is sweet but substantial for a cookie ... and the ginger gives it a definite "bite."

How about a kiwi for Hagrid? It's hairy and brown on the outside, tender and sweet on the inside!

I like the mead for Dumbledore. It warms you on the inside, but it isn't overpowering.

shepherdess - Dec 6, 2008 6:09 pm (#18 of 164)

My son-in-law make very spicy-hot chili, but he puts brown sugar in it. So when you taste it, it tastes sweet, but after a few minutes, it creates an enormous fire in your mouth.

I don't know what Umbridge would taste like, but I think whatever it is would have the same type of effect as the chili--start out sweet, then mercilessly torture your digestive tract.

Chemyst - Dec 6, 2008 6:43 pm (#19 of 164)

Oh yes, a tablespoon of the saccharine (unpleasantly sweet and sentimental) Saccharin (artificial sweetener) that leaves an odd aftertaste and comes in the PINK packetsóin battery acid. Perfect for Umbridge.

Trelawney's would have the texture of cotton candy but a taste like cooking sherry interspersed with clumps of tea leaves.

Solitaire - Dec 6, 2008 7:34 pm (#20 of 164)

LOL@Trelawney's "taste"! Perfecto!

legolas returns- Dec 7, 2008 3:13 am (#21 of 164)

For Luna I was trying to think of a taste that was very unusual but actually grew on you over time. Can't think what it would be.

Elanor - Dec 7, 2008 8:37 am (#22 of 164)

What about eggnog? (IMO, it should be something white.)

legolas returns- Dec 7, 2008 8:38 am (#23 of 164)

What is eggnog?

Orion - Dec 7, 2008 8:52 am (#24 of 164)

For Luna a taste of some unusual, exotic sweet would be quite fitting, maybe one of those new kinds of chocolate with spices or fruit - lemon filling? Chili chocolate?

For Hagrid I'd imagine something which mirrors his personality, not his looks - the taste of something warm and reassuring like a hot home-cooked stew.

Solitaire - Dec 7, 2008 10:53 am (#25 of 164)

Eggnog is a very thick, rich drink made of cream (or milk), beaten eggs and sugar, flavored with nutmeg and usually a liquor of some kind. The liquor was traditionally rum, but brandy and whiskey are also common additions. (Description from drinkspub.com) It can also be made without the liquor. Here in the US, we generally see it around the Christmas holidays, and it contributes greatly to the expansion of one's waistline, if indulged in too often. I must say that thinned with a bit of milk, it makes a wonderful batter for soaking French toast. Mmmm!

BTW, for Luna ... how about white chocolate or cotton candy? She is kind of "airy," so the cotton candy seems perfect, to me.

Choices - Dec 8, 2008 7:47 am (#26 of 164)

I think of Divinity for Luna. It is airy, sweet, soft and full of nuts. Luna! LOL

Steve Newton - Dec 8, 2008 11:37 am (#27 of 164)

How about Snape as camembert? Pasty looking, somewhat smelly, but quite good when warm.

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 8, 2008 11:42 am (#28 of 164)

Heh, Snape's so full of hate for James, love for Lily, and re-molding by Dumbledore. I think maybe stale venison mince-meat pie.

Solitaire - Dec 8, 2008 7:10 pm (#29 of 164)

Luna ... airy, sweet, soft and nuts! LOLOL

Elanor - Dec 8, 2008 9:55 pm (#30 of 164)

What about gingerbread for Ron?

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 9, 2008 8:48 am (#31 of 164)

Mmmmmm, gingerbread, divinity. Heh, must be the season .

Gingerbread could work for Ron. It reminds me of home and family.

I never would have thought of divinity for Luna, but it sounds like a good fit.

Dryleaves - Dec 9, 2008 9:07 am (#32 of 164)

I think Ron could also taste like cinnamon rolls.

Solitaire - Dec 9, 2008 8:04 pm (#33 of 164)

Gingerbread ... or maybe carrot cake! Mmmmmmm!

What about Trelawney ... old tea leaves and cooking sherry?

PeskyPixie - Dec 11, 2008 8:31 am (#34 of 164)

Bitter melon for Snape. It is bitter, but once you acquire a taste for it, it can be quite enjoyable. Plus, it's good for health. So, yeah, a serious, bitter vegetable (well, technically it's a fruit) which is more helpful than harmful sounds like Severus Snape to me Plus, it's green!

PeskyPixie - Dec 13, 2008 11:23 am (#35 of 164)

Come on, guys, a little enthusiasm for what I came up with for ol' Snapey in my previous post!

Solitaire - Dec 13, 2008 11:27 am (#36 of 164)

Actually, Pesky, I think they're still carrying on the discussion on the Snape thread.

Elanor - Dec 13, 2008 12:26 pm (#37 of 164)

I like it Pesky! Also thought of lime: green, and bittersweet.

Orion - Dec 13, 2008 12:35 pm (#38 of 164)

Slughorn: port - rich, sweet, spirituous, treacherous - it fells you from behind.

PeskyPixie - Dec 13, 2008 1:47 pm (#39 of 164)

Soli, I am so behind on the Snape thread that I know I won't be caught up there until after Christmas.

I like lime as well, Elanor. Along with green, bitter and sweet, it's also sour.

Nice, Orion.

I just wanted to get this thread moving again as I only discovered it very recently and I love it!

Julia H. - Dec 13, 2008 2:14 pm (#40 of 164)

Pesky, my "lack of enthusiasm" is entirely based on the fact that I have never tasted bitter melon (and what I know about it does not particularly encourage me to taste it any time soon).

However, I can definitely imagine lime taste for Snape and I like Orion's idea for Slughorn.

PeskyPixie - Dec 13, 2008 6:34 pm (#41 of 164)

Julia, bitter melon is indeed an acquired taste. My mom loves it, so she hooked me onto it from a young age. I love it as well (although my mom's amazing cooking may be behind that!). Still, we haven't been able to convert my dad. Whenever it's on the menu he just happens to lose his appetite.

Hee, hee, this thread reminds of the book, ‘Sideways Stories From Wayside School’. There is a chapter where the teacher makes ice creams in the flavours of each child in her child. There is one particularly hateful little girl who dislikes all of the other students, thus, all of the ice creams taste disgusting to her. So, I do wonder whether Lucius would find Albus-flavoured Polyjuice potion all that appealing?

Solitaire - Dec 13, 2008 9:19 pm (#42 of 164)

Hm ... I don't really think of Sluggy as treacherous. Epicurean, sybaritic, and a bit sycophantic, yes ... but not really treacherous.

Edit: I looked up some info on bitter melon and it sounds terrible! Then again, "bitter" is not a taste that appeals to me. What did sound interesting was that it contains compounds believed to have properties that might be useful in treating HIV and diabetes! Now, that would be wonderful!

Mrs. Sirius - Dec 13, 2008 10:43 pm (#43 of 164)

Home made bread for Harry, maybe a baguette?

Solitaire - Dec 13, 2008 11:10 pm (#44 of 164)

Nah, Harry is so sweet ... he's treacle tart! Actually, whenever I hear this dessert mentioned, I think of Harry. (Not that there is anything wrong with bread ... I love homemade bread!)

Julia H. - Dec 14, 2008 1:53 am (#45 of 164)

A bitter taste combined with healing effects sounds good for Snape. I just don't know the precise taste of bitter melon but I guess it's OK!

I think some type of sweet wine (treacherous or not) is definitely a very good taste for Slughorn. I can associate him with wine easily.

(I can even imagine Slughorn as sweet wine and Snape as dry wine - the two "good Slytherins" and Heads of Slytherin in the books.)

Orion - Dec 14, 2008 5:27 am (#46 of 164)

Slughorn may not be treacherous in the literal sense of the world, but like in port, under the treacherous sweetness (in Slughorn's case: charming, genial personality) there are hidden depths. In the case of port, both an alcoholic level and also some chemical substances which make the alcohol even more lethal, which make you drunk without knowing what hit you. In Slughorn's case: He has absolutely great moments. For example singing ‘Odo the Hero’ with Hagrid, or helping Ron with an antidote to the love potion (it wasn't his fault that the wine he offered Ron and Harry was poisoned). His worst moments: He has food and wine tested by house-elves, and he snubs students who are not up to his social standards. That is the treacherous nature of Slughorn's apparently easygoing personality.

Solitaire - Dec 14, 2008 7:19 pm (#47 of 164)

Having House-elves test his food is pretty bad, but snubbing people is hardly treacherous. It's mainly foolish and egotistical.

Orion - Dec 15, 2008 8:32 am (#48 of 164)

No, no, I didn't mean he is treacherous. I just wanted to say that he has good sides and bad sides and his bad sides are atrocious. But you wouldn't guess it at first because he is so charming. His appearance is treacherous, it fools you, just like port or a sweet alcoholic cocktail fools you. Figuratively speaking.

PeskyPixie - Dec 15, 2008 10:44 am (#49 of 164)

For some reason I think of Granny Smith apples for Minnie McG.

ETA: I just Googled 'divinity' and it sounds right for Luna.

Now, what do you all think for Ginny?

Elanor - Dec 15, 2008 11:10 am (#50 of 164)

Vinegar for Ginny?

After all, it IS the anagram of Ginevra... And she can be "acid". (Ok, I don't like Ginny much, I admit...)

I do like port for Slughorn and treacle tart is just perfect for Harry!

Polyjuice Potion: Who tastes like what? Empty Polyjuice Potion: Who tastes like what? - posts #51 to #100

Post  Potteraholic Mon Sep 19, 2011 9:05 pm

legolas returns- Dec 15, 2008 1:56 pm (#51 of 164)

No kidding that you don't like Ginny, Elanor!

Vinegar is a little bit Harsh. I was thinking more like Gooseberry Crumble. Sweet but a little bit on the tart side.

Orion - Dec 15, 2008 2:40 pm (#52 of 164)

Ginny should taste like something very boring which is made to look more interesting with lots of spices and little pink umbrellas. Like Starbucks coffee with peppermint syrup or something stupid like that.

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 16, 2008 5:48 am (#53 of 164)

No, no, I didn't mean he is treacherous. I just wanted to say that he has good sides and bad sides and his bad sides are atrocious. But you wouldn't guess it at first because he is so charming. His appearance is treacherous, it fools you, just like port or a sweet alcoholic cocktail fools you. Figuratively speaking.-- Orion

I see what you are saying. I don't remember what port tastes like, though, having only had it once and it making no lasting impression. I like the sweet alcoholic cocktail idea. Something with pineapple juice and sugar. Something interesting, that I'd only ever order at an open bar but would never spend my own money on.

On the subject of things that I don't know what they taste like, what does treacle tart taste like?

I think rhubarb for Molly Weasley. Maybe even her famous rhubarb crumble.

Elanor - Dec 16, 2008 10:16 pm (#54 of 164)

Great idea, Orion!

I've had treacle tart at the first Accio convention (there was a HP feast), it's very sweet and I loved it!

For Molly, something that tastes like a traditional Sunday family meal, rhubarb crumble would be good!

What about champagne for Fleur?

It's French, a bit chichi, the bubbles would fit the way she is described floating when she walks and her effect on people is close enough to that of a glass of champ meeting an empty stomach.

Dryleaves - Dec 17, 2008 12:39 am (#55 of 164)

Elanor, I think champagne sounds just like Fleur.

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 17, 2008 8:28 am (#56 of 164)

Elanor, I love the idea of champagne for Fleur.

I've had treacle tart at the first Accio convention (there was a HP feast), it's very sweet and I loved it! - Elanor

Hmm, I love Harry, he's my favorite character, but he doesn't strike me as overly sweet.

PeskyPixie - Dec 17, 2008 12:03 pm (#57 of 164)

Champagne for Fleur is just perfect! Ten points to your House, Elanor!

Julia H. - Dec 17, 2008 1:10 pm (#58 of 164)

Yes, Elanor, perfect.

Chemyst - Dec 20, 2008 5:01 pm (#59 of 164)

Rhubarb crumble is perfect for Molly.

Raspberry vinegar cut with oil might work for Ginny. She is just the dressing for Harry's wholesome vegetables anyway.

PeskyPixie - Dec 20, 2008 7:32 pm (#60 of 164)

Stale bacon grease for Peter Pettigrew. Or maybe moldy cheese?

Solitaire - Dec 20, 2008 7:43 pm (#61 of 164)

Moldy cheese ... perfect! He is a moldy little rat.

legolas returns- Dec 22, 2008 9:31 am (#62 of 164)

I am thinking deep fried food for Lucius Malfoy. Deep fried pizza or deep fried Mars Bar perhaps. Oily in other words. Enough to give you furred arteries and a heart attack.

I was in the Highlands one time with a friend. There was hardly anywhere to eat. We ended up in a place that had got an award for food (thought it might be good-how wrong was I). I ordered some pizza (I quite enjoyed pizza up to that stage) and it came back deep fried. The oil was running off my hands by just holding it. Since then I have been unable to enjoy pizza without getting an overwhelming greasy feeling.

Solitaire - Dec 22, 2008 3:45 pm (#63 of 164)

Or perhaps Fettuccini Alfredo ... something I've often heard referred to as "a heart attack on a plate." It looks and tastes absolutely delicious, but it can be dangerous to one's health.

Deep fried Mars Bar? Wouldn't the chocolate melt?

Orion - Dec 22, 2008 3:50 pm (#64 of 164)

They do that in Britain! It was on TV! And Jamie Oliver fights a brave fight for better food in schools. Yay Jamie!

For Filius Flitwick (it's quite hard to imagine any taste for him which has nothing to do with ice cream) something sweet but not lethal would be good: Maybe some delicious yoghurt with fresh fruits? It would have to be really pleasant because he is so pleasant himself.

Solitaire - Dec 22, 2008 4:11 pm (#65 of 164)

He is so sweet ... Actually, the Sugar Mice he gives Harry seem to kind of epitomize him for me. But I think some melt-in-your-mouth chocolate Papillotes would be just like him. Or perhaps a goblet of homemade tutti-frutti or spumoni ice cream! Mmmmm!

legolas returns- Dec 27, 2008 11:04 am (#66 of 164)

I have never tried the deep fried "delicacy" that is Mars Bars so I couldn't tell you whether the chocolate would melt.

Solitaire - Dec 27, 2008 11:17 am (#67 of 164)

I did try deep fried ice cream--once, about 25 years ago--and it was fabulous. They probably had to use a similar technique.

Orion - Dec 27, 2008 3:40 pm (#68 of 164)

The Mars bar goes into some batter first and then it's in the hot fat only for seconds until the batter has solidified, so the chocolate doesn't melt. But what really bothered me was that all things went into the same fat, sausages and Mars bars and all kind of different food. Doesn't the fat taste of sausage after some time, even if the sausage is covered with batter? There, now I'm hungry.

legolas returns- Dec 28, 2008 2:24 am (#69 of 164)

Trying not to think about that.

Ludicrous Patents Office - Dec 28, 2008 6:58 am (#70 of 164)

I think Lucius would take like eel, after all he is "slippery".

Charlie would taste like red hot chili! LPO

Choices - Dec 28, 2008 9:05 am (#71 of 164)

Or perhaps escargot - I always think of Julia Roberts line in Pretty Woman when she tries to get a snail out of the shell and it goes flying - "Slippery little suckers." LOL

Solitaire - Dec 28, 2008 11:38 am (#72 of 164)

I agree that Charlie would taste like chili ... or perhaps some red-hot, spicy Asian dish!

Michael Franz - Feb 6, 2009 2:54 pm (#73 of 164)

Umbridge tastes like whatever the White Witch's Turkish Delight tastes like. Of course, I've heard that kids who read ‘The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrob’e today have ordered Turkish Delight off the Internet, taken one bite, and declared "Yuck! Edmund sold out his family for this?"

PeskyPixie - Feb 7, 2009 1:56 pm (#74 of 164)

LOL, I'm sure those kids got the surprise of their lives! I have yet to meet a person who actually likes it. I've actually heard that the movie's producers considered changing it to cheeseburgers, but decided to go for authenticity and keep the Turkish Delight in. It was a good choice, but it certainly doesn't make Turkish Delight any more appealing. (My apologies to those who simply adore it.)

I wouldn't be surprised if Umbridge-flavoured Polyjuice potion tasted of it.

me and my shadow 813 - Feb 7, 2009 2:44 pm (#75 of 164)

Pesky that's funny. When I first saw Turkish Delight in Canada I bought it, thinking it was an old candy called Turkish Taffy (which was yummy). That was the first and last time that stuff will ever touch my lips...

Maybe Umbridge would taste like used kitty litter, being she has all those cat plates hanging everywhere.

Solitaire - Feb 7, 2009 5:18 pm (#76 of 164)

LOL@Umbridge tasting like kitty litter. May I add ... kitty litter that needs to be changed?

BTW, I looked up a couple of recipes for Turkish Delight, and they sound a lot like See's Bonbons, which were good, if a bit sweet. When I looked at pictures, however, they looked more like Applets & Cotlets, which I adore!

PeskyPixie - Feb 7, 2009 6:11 pm (#77 of 164)

MEAMS, I think we tried the same thing.

I received a box of assorted Russell Stover’s (which are not too popular in Canada) for Christmas and I had the misfortune of trying 'Roman Nougat'. It was pretty gross, but I think it would suit Umbridge as it's obscenely pink and nutty but also extremely dark (i.e. the chocolate was dark and was the only redeeming quality of that little 'treat' ).

Solitaire - Feb 7, 2009 6:26 pm (#78 of 164)

I looked up Aplets & Cotlets a while ago, out of curiosity, and found that they are modeled on Turkish Delight! Amazing ... because I love Aplets & Cotlets!!!

PeskyPixie - Feb 7, 2009 9:56 pm (#79 of 164)

Aha! So we've finally found someone who would appreciate Turkish Delight. Apparently jellybeans were also derived from Turkish Delight.

Two questions: 1. What would Rita Skeeter taste like? ; 2. I've tasted candied ginger and it is quite distinctive, does anyone have any ideas on whose potion would taste like it?

me and my shadow 813 - Feb 7, 2009 10:05 pm (#80 of 164)

I would say Ginny might taste like candied ginger, Pesky.

Solitaire - Feb 7, 2009 10:10 pm (#81 of 164)

Rita Skeeter? Hm ... battery acid?

Verity Weasley - Feb 7, 2009 11:23 pm (#82 of 164)

I think Rita Skeeter might taste like vinegar. Still very acidic, but not quite as strong as battery acid! (Which I've never tasted, obviously.)

I actually quite like Turkish Delight. Both the real thing, which is covered in icing sugar and usually flavoured with rose water or vanilla, and the chocolate covered variety. Yum!

Elanor - Feb 7, 2009 11:38 pm (#83 of 164)

For Rita, what about that nettle wine we hear of in PS/SS, or some kind of nettle essence? Irritating, burning, urticant, and something you'd better not come too close with if you know what's good for you, Rita has lots in common with nettle, hasn't she?

Candied ginger: what about Arthur? Sweet yet strong, and "candied" sounds like "candide" in French which means ingenuous (in a sincere and rather sweet way).

me and my shadow 813 - Feb 8, 2009 11:01 am (#84 of 164)

Elanor, I like the nettle wine analogy. Let's say nettle wine that's been left in the (broom) cupboard too long and has turned to vinegar!

Solitaire - Feb 8, 2009 11:22 am (#85 of 164)

Nettles are perfect for Rita. I've come into contact with them, I'm sorry to say ... VERY stinging and painful! I still think of her rather like battery acid, however ... extremely caustic and deadly (to anyone's reputation).

Orion - Feb 8, 2009 12:03 pm (#86 of 164)

On the other hand, Rita is also hugely entertaining, so her taste wouldn't be intolerably horrible but fizzy and spicy, like sherbet. Maybe her Polyjuic Potion would taste like sherbet lemons?

me and my shadow 813 - Feb 8, 2009 12:28 pm (#87 of 164)

Perhaps she is entertaining to us, but not to Harry, Hagrid, Bathilda, the Dumbledore family, etc. She should stay a beetle and be made to live on a pile of dung.

Solitaire - Feb 8, 2009 1:27 pm (#88 of 164)

Hm ... I think sherbet lemons are far too tasty for Rita. I dislike her caustic, half-truth, libelous style. Perhaps "Dung" would be a good taste for her! She certainly serves it up to her readers in big portions!

PeskyPixie - Feb 8, 2009 1:29 pm (#89 of 164)

I must agree with Soli that sherbet lemons are way too tasty to be Rita.

Great takes on the candied ginger, guys. How silly of me not to realize that it applies to the Weasley of one's choice! Hmmm, could it apply to Molly as well?

me and my shadow 813 - Feb 8, 2009 1:42 pm (#90 of 164)

LOL, Solitaire, pass the shovel

I think candied ginger could well apply to Molly as well. You know how when you chew on a big piece and your nostrils feel like they're shooting flames? That's Molly! Of course, she's a sweetie like them, too!

Solitaire - Feb 8, 2009 2:12 pm (#91 of 164)

I love candied ginger, too! Mmmm! I love lots of ginger in my food and use it liberally in many things.

Ludicrous Patents Office - Feb 9, 2009 8:38 pm (#92 of 164)

I think Molly would taste like baking bread. LPO

PeskyPixie - Feb 10, 2009 8:33 am (#93 of 164)

Minced ginger with lemon is great for relieving coughs.

I think Cuthbert Binns would taste of plain dry toast.

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 19, 2009 9:39 pm (#94 of 164)

No one has mentioned Madam Sprout (as usual... *sniff*).

Perhaps she would taste like a baked potato with melted butter (and a sprinkling of minced flat leaf parsley or chives). Earthy, sweet, heavy, nourishing, satisfying.

Solitaire - Mar 20, 2009 5:47 am (#95 of 164)

... or maybe a big, juicy yam with butter! Hopefully, she would not taste like turnips ... too bitter!

Orion - Mar 20, 2009 11:28 am (#96 of 164)

Sprouty with butter? Nooooo... she is so wholesome, no-nonsense and full of energy that she makes me think of a big pot of fresh and green broccoli, sprinkled with fresh parsley.

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 20, 2009 11:43 am (#97 of 164)

How on Earth is butter not wholesome!? She's described as "dumpy" with earth under her fingernails, so probably would taste like something containing fat and earth (potato skin), IMO.

I hate broccoli (unless it's sautéed in butter).

legolas returns- Mar 20, 2009 11:47 am (#98 of 164)

I was thinking about Leeks in Cheese Sauce. Perhaps I should go and buy the ingredients for tonight’s dinner...

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 20, 2009 11:55 am (#99 of 164)

Leeks would be perfect for Pomona because no matter how much you rinse, there's always a bit of earth hiding away and you only find out when you eat it... *crunch*

I don't believe anyone mentioned what Vold would taste like...?

My first reaction is to say he'd taste like raw fish that's been left out on the counter for a few weeks.

Elanor - Mar 20, 2009 12:01 pm (#100 of 164)

Maybe Voldy would have no taste at all: by creating the Horcruxes he deprived himself of his very substance.

Polyjuice Potion: Who tastes like what? Empty Polyjuice Potion: Who tastes like what? - posts #101 to #164

Post  Potteraholic Mon Sep 19, 2011 10:17 pm

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 20, 2009 12:10 pm (#101 of 164)

Elanor, that's interesting to think of... that even if you might obtain a tiny portion of -- hair? nope, probably no hair on him... a fleck of sloughed skin as he is so reptilian... ew. -- as you attempted to add it to the potion it would not even take.

Orion - Mar 20, 2009 12:18 pm (#102 of 164)

Like the small pieces of dead skin you get on your fingers if you're not careful and shred them a tiny little bit. It's fun to nibble it off. It would be less fun to drink a cup of Voldie, though - only the taste, not the texture.

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 20, 2009 12:33 pm (#103 of 164)

I liked that Sirius would be (flat) nut brown ale... and Sluggy like port (tawny and as sweet as possible). Of course, Mrs Cole would taste like gin

How about Firenze? He is a palomino so perhaps a delicate Spanish cheese? Or... something with cream? (can you tell I like rich food?)

Solitaire - Mar 21, 2009 6:52 pm (#104 of 164)

I think he would taste like the yucky smell he gives off. Remember that Harry smelled him when he was riding around under Quirrell's turban. The twins said Quirrell had garlic stuffed in it, but I think it was probably a much worse smell (I actually love the smell of garlic) ... kind of like the "rotting garbage" smell of the Dementors. IMO, he would taste like he smells.

Julia H. - Mar 22, 2009 12:10 am (#105 of 164)

I wondered if the garlic smell was Voldy's or whether Quirrell disguised Voldy's real smell with the strong smell of garlic...

I actually love the smell of garlic...

I know people who insist on talking about the aroma of garlic rather than just smell...

legolas returns- Mar 22, 2009 4:10 am (#106 of 164)

This is going to sound very bizarre but bear with me. I think if you managed to get a bit of Voldie to stick into your Polyjuice potion and you lived to tell the tale the potion would be the most delicious thing you ever tasted. I am saying this because there would only be a certain type of wizard that could get close enough to him and would want to be him e.g a Death Eater. If you just happened to stumble across a vat of Polyjuice potion with a sticker saying "Drink me if you dare" and you were not Darkly inclined then I think it would taste of rotting flesh.

PeskyPixie - Mar 22, 2009 8:43 am (#107 of 164)

Very interesting, legolas and Elanor. The rotting fish odour makes sense for me, but you two have come up with some pretty interesting ideas.

For me, Pomona Sprout is a hearty slice of pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream.

Julia H. - Mar 22, 2009 10:31 am (#108 of 164)

I think Pomona would be a salad of fresh vegetables or maybe herbal tea.

PeskyPixie - Mar 22, 2009 2:28 pm (#109 of 164)

I'm pretty sure that Dolohov tastes icky.

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 22, 2009 3:26 pm (#110 of 164)

For some reason I picture him with slicked back hair so maybe he'd taste like petroleum (like that old-fashioned hair pomade).

Did anyone mention Ron? I can't recall, after reading the entire thread the other day

I think he might taste like whatever you enjoy. Does that sound rude? I don't mean that he has no personality... just that he might be such a loyal person he's almost a chameleon. *shrugs* Maybe he'd taste like bacon sandwiches (which I love and he seems to love pork, that Ron does).

jose043 - Mar 22, 2009 10:59 pm (#111 of 164)

MAMs I agree Ron tasting like bacon sandwiches no eggs or tomato sauce though please for me allergic to both.

Solitaire - Mar 23, 2009 6:06 am (#112 of 164)

I think of Ron as cinnamon toast! LOL I have no idea why!

Orion - Mar 24, 2009 9:45 am (#113 of 164)

Maybe you think of cinnamon because of the colour, Soli? IMO, Ron would taste very British and traditional like shepherd's pie or another traditional dish. He's down to earth, so he wouldn't have a fancy exotic taste, but very agreeable and tasty. He's always great fun to read, so his taste must be quite good. Good pub food with a nice pint of beer.

Julia H. - Mar 24, 2009 9:49 am (#114 of 164)

Ron would taste very British and traditional like shepherd's pie or another traditional dish. He's down to earth, so he wouldn't have a fancy exotic taste, but very agreeable and tasty. -- Orion

English breakfast.

PeskyPixie - Mar 24, 2009 9:54 am (#115 of 164)

I love trifle. Maybe his potion would taste of it? Oh, but he's got a bit of ginger in his personality as well, hasn't he?

BTW, I've just decided that one of the numerous Weasleys must taste of ginger ale. Great-aunt Muriel, perhaps? Or would she be more of a chili pepper?

Julia H. - Mar 24, 2009 10:21 am (#116 of 164)

Isn't Muriel Molly's aunt?

PeskyPixie - Mar 24, 2009 10:39 am (#117 of 164)

Are we told explicitly? But of course, from her comment about the Weasleys, she is probably from Molly's side of the family, perhaps a Prewitt.

Ludicrous Patents Office - Mar 24, 2009 7:05 pm (#118 of 164)

Fred and George have to be something fun like popcorn or skittles. Charlie burnt toast, Percy prunes, Bill a nice scotch, Ginny something floral, I like the English Breakfast for Ron. LPO

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 24, 2009 9:57 pm (#119 of 164)

That's adorable, LPO. I'll play along:

To me, Fred and George would be something sweet & sour as they are twins and usually represent opposite/same something like the popcorn that is caramel and spicy?

Charlie, yes, burnt from dragons... perhaps well-done Texas BBQ? heh heh...

Percy and prunes, poor Percy came through in the end (...Oh. Prunes. Did I say something? ) Maybe we'll give Percy a break and he'll taste like raisins instead of prunes

Bill and scotch sounds great as folks decided Fleur would taste like champagne. Perfect cocktail party!

Ginny... I'm not a big fan, so as a flower I'll say dandelions, including the bitter leaves... and that's generous.

Ron as tea suits me just fine. I adore tea!

Elanor - Mar 24, 2009 10:16 pm (#120 of 164)

You know, there's something about prunes, when they have soaked in aged Armagnac for a few months, that is nothing short of a wonder.

For the twins, I was thinking of Tabasco (with a dash of gunpowder, we don't want anything too mild for them, do we? )

Julia H. - Mar 25, 2009 2:05 am (#121 of 164)

Ron as tea suits me just fine.

Yes, fine. But to tell you the truth, I did not mean the tea but a real English breakfast with all the bacon and sausages and eggs and toasts etc. Ron loves eating after all. I suppose, his Polyjuice Potion would have a lot of different tastes in this case.

PeskyPixie - Mar 25, 2009 6:46 am (#122 of 164)

Me likey Percy as prunes! Something very fitting about it, though I can't put a finger on it.

BTW, I love cooking with prunes. They really are a wonder when they're full of juice once again. They are plums after all.

me and my shadow 813 - Mar 25, 2009 8:56 am (#123 of 164)

Julia, a real English "brekkie" sounds even better!

PeskyPixie - Mar 28, 2009 5:44 pm (#124 of 164)

I think of an ice cream sundae with a cherry on top for Flitwick.

I wonder if Crabbe and Goyle would taste simply wonderful to their respective mothers.

ETA: How about artichokes for Snape? All those layers ...

PeskyPixie - Mar 28, 2009 8:26 pm (#125 of 164)

And what about Victor Krum? BTW, is his name spelled Viktor or Victor?

Solitaire - Mar 28, 2009 8:35 pm (#126 of 164)

How about artichokes for Snape? All those layers ... - PeskyPixie

No, no, NO!! I like artichokes ... don't ruin them for me!

PeskyPixie - Mar 28, 2009 9:09 pm (#127 of 164)

Maybe you could learn to like Sev too. He really wants to be friends with you.

Elanor - Mar 28, 2009 10:12 pm (#128 of 164)

What about nettle wine for Snape? Irritating yet highly positive (as the wine symbolism shows) in the end. It could turn to plain water (the Slytherin element) when he is in "Occlumency Mode".

Solitaire - Mar 29, 2009 7:11 pm (#129 of 164)

I doubt it, Pesky. I can give Snape credit for helping Harry to achieve his goal, and I can admit he made some hard choices... but I doubt I'll ever like him. I react to Snape in a visceral way. The only other literary character I can remember disliking so strongly is Iago. I had a very disturbing reaction to him in one of my college Shakespeare classes, and my feelings about Snape in the first six books were similar.

Dryleaves - Mar 29, 2009 11:04 pm (#130 of 164)

What about artichokes for Dumbledore? He also has many layers and at least in Swedish that hairy stuff in the middle of an artichoke is called a "beard". Would that be OK with you, Soli?

Elanor - Mar 30, 2009 7:48 am (#131 of 164)

I love the idea, Dryleaves! And the artichoke is famous for its heart, what could be better for Dumbledore than this?

Solitaire - Apr 4, 2009 6:12 pm (#132 of 164)

Yes,Dryleaves and Elanor ... I think artichokes would be great for Dumbledore!

Julia H. - Apr 5, 2009 1:54 am (#133 of 164)

Nettle wine for Snape! Sounds good, Elanor!

freshwater - Apr 5, 2009 4:28 pm (#134 of 164)

I think Polish Dill Pickle soup might be the taste of Snape....sounds awful, but is actually quite delicious.

Ludicrous Patents Office - Apr 5, 2009 7:03 pm (#135 of 164)

I like the artichoke for Dumbledore. Can we add some lemon for a certain Muggle candy he was fond of? I love artichoke and lemon.

I have to agree with Soli in regards to Snape. He is unpleasant and many of his actions are unforgivable. He would taste like something very bitter. Not sure what though. LPO

PeskyPixie - Apr 7, 2009 6:06 am (#136 of 164)

I've mentioned bitter melon for Snape in the past.

John Bumbledore - May 11, 2009 7:36 am (#137 of 164)

Funny, I though Ginny's Polyjuice would taste like pumpkin pie with a scoop of butterscotch ice cream.

I think if I read any more of this thread I'll go into sugar shock.

--John

P.S. Has Madam Hooch been juiced? I'd say a smooth gin or perhaps hooch (moonshine or grain alcohol) as it fairly make you feel as though you are flying.

Solitaire - May 11, 2009 7:46 pm (#138 of 164)

Ginny ... I'm thinking ... gingerbread!

PeskyPixie - May 12, 2009 9:41 am (#139 of 164)

For Prof. Grubbly-Plank I'm thinking of the pipe she was puffing at.

PeskyPixie - Aug 15, 2009 2:55 pm (#140 of 164)

I had posted the following on the wrong thread earlier this month:

For Umbridge, that nasty pink bubblegum (unless you happen to like it, of course; I personally detest it).

I'm thinking chicken (for obvious reasons) for Zacharias Smith.

Solitaire - Aug 15, 2009 5:20 pm (#141 of 164)

Hm ... what do you think about Pepto-Bismol for Umbridge? It is pink and very nasty!

PeskyPixie - Aug 15, 2009 5:50 pm (#142 of 164)

Works for me!

Now, what about dear old Mundungus? Something stale, for starters.

shepherdess - Aug 15, 2009 9:47 pm (#143 of 164)

All I can think of is an ashtray.

legolas returns- Aug 16, 2009 1:00 am (#144 of 164)

I would say a combination of ashtray and wine that has got a slight vinegar taste e.g been opened for too long.

[b]Madam Pince/b] - Aug 16, 2009 9:46 am (#145 of 164)

I'm getting an impression of a skunky smell...

I like the Pepto Bismol idea a lot...

PeskyPixie - Aug 16, 2009 9:53 am (#146 of 164)

Skunk cabbage?

Fenrir is another one I wonder about.

I was reading a bit of HBP last night and I began to wonder about what the different characters would smell when confronted with a vat of Amortentia. I think one of the smells McGonagall would smell is gingersnaps.

[b]Madam Pince/b] - Aug 16, 2009 9:57 am (#147 of 164)

And the leathery smell of a new Quaffle. For some reason, I'm convinced Minerva was a mean Quidditch player in her day.

PeskyPixie - Aug 16, 2009 10:43 am (#148 of 164)

Nice thinking, Madam Pince! Do lilies have a scent? If so, Snape would smell lilies. What about Dumbledore? He's a rather complex little critter, isn't he? What with his family and Gellert and his students. I'm betting on some sort of lemony smell, though. (I know that one of the smells I'd smell would be gasoline!) Bella wouldn't have a layered scent experience. No, she'd just smell pure essence of Voldemort. Eeewww!

For the Polyjuice potion, I'm thinking some sort of soufflée for Ernie MacMillan.

Dryleaves - Aug 16, 2009 12:35 pm (#149 of 164)

Do lilies have a scent? (PeskyPixie)

Many years ago, when I worked in a hospital during the summer, one of the patients, who was blind, was given a lily so that she could smell it as she could not see it. Only this lily had a very strong scent and caused allergic reactions or headaches to some fellow patients and staff members...

Orion - Aug 16, 2009 1:31 pm (#150 of 164)

Wow, we need a new thread - what would Amortentia smell like for everybody! Great thought, Pesky. BTW did anybody understand why it smells like mint toothpaste for Hermione? Apart from the profession of her parents, there's nothing loveable about toothpaste. Most people find brushing their teeth necessary but not exactly the highlight of the day.

PeskyPixie - Aug 16, 2009 1:36 pm (#151 of 164)

In the movie there was that bit in the Burrow when Ron tells Hermione that she has toothpaste on her face. (It seems awkward that that would be the scent she associates with Ron.) In the book she says that she smells freshly mown grass, parchment, then she stops, and we are to assume now that she smelled Essence de Ronald. JKR claims that she smelled his hair.

BTW, I would be interested in an Amortentia thread.

Solitaire - Aug 16, 2009 5:18 pm (#152 of 164)

LOL, shepherdess! I'd say you hit that nail right on the head! Might I also suggest a pair of extremely dirty gym socks, the kind that "marinate" all term in a kid's locker?

When I think of Fenrir, I think of nothing so much as a slaughterhouse--or maybe a garbage dump. Ick!

I like the gingersnaps for McGonagall. Maybe some haggis, also?

Dumbledore? LOL How about Mike's Hard Lemonade? I always associate him with lemon drops, but he does pack a punch!

Ernie MacMillan reminds me of meatloaf--nice, a bit stuffy, but very substantial.

I think an Amortentia thread smells--um, I mean sounds--nice!

Julia H. - Nov 28, 2009 3:32 pm (#153 of 164)

This thread has been dormant for a while. Here are some more ideas:

Has anyone suggested anything for Polyjuice-Potion-Lily? I think her potion would be fiery red like her hair because she is a Gryffindor and because she represents love. Since I can't really imagine lily-taste for a drink, I think the potion would have the taste of something red and sweet, like raspberry, for example.

Molly's Polyjuice Potion would taste of milk and honey. Yes, I know she often shouts and mildly terrorizes her loved ones, but she is still the quintessential mother, and she represents home.

Narcissa-potion could be 100% lemon juice.

shepherdess - Nov 28, 2009 3:36 pm (#154 of 164)

Or grapefruit.

Dryleaves - Nov 29, 2009 1:33 am (#155 of 164)

This thread has inspired me to have a HP theme for my Christmas chocolates this year. The problem is to decide which characters should be represented, as I can't make too many different kinds of sweets.

Anyway, I found a recipe for a white chocolate truffle with cardamom and instantly thought of Molly, because in my country the ideal mum bakes rolls, and these rolls often have cardamom in the dough, which gives a lovely smell of home when in the oven. (But I suppose home smells differently to all of us.)

(Snape will be a 70% chocolate truffle with chilli, BTW...)

HungarianHorntail11- Jan 12, 2010 7:58 am (#156 of 164)

I like the Amortentia thread idea!

How about Red Hots for Ginny and poo for Peeves?

I took Hermione's description to mean that the scents of hanging out in the Burrow were great moments for her because she was with Ron.

PeskyPixie - Jan 12, 2010 10:50 am (#157 of 164)

I like that idea too. Would Snape smell a field of lilies?

Julia H. - Jan 12, 2010 11:50 am (#158 of 164)

A field of lilies, yes, definitely! A field of lilies as an image is very close to the image of the Fields of Asphodel, where the dead in Greek mythology await to be judged as evil or good or just average. Then the evil ones are sent to Tartarus, the good ones (the heroes!) are sent to Elysium, and those who are neither particularly good nor particularly bad will have to stay in the Fields of Asphodel. Snape seems to linger for seven volumes in those fields.

[b]Madam Pince/b] - Jan 13, 2010 4:15 am (#159 of 164)

Thanks for that, Julia -- I had not heard of that mythology. (It gives me food for thought for my Lost addiction, too, which will be starting up soon! February 2nd! Woo-hoo!) My cousin teaches Greek... I should call her and get more info.

I hadn't thought about what Severus would smell... lilies.... awwwwww.... *sniff*

Chemyst - Feb 8, 2010 5:37 am (#160 of 164)

Maybe a fire lily...

I'd think Snape's Polyjuice would be dark, oily and crusty with a marshmallow on top.

PeskyPixie - Feb 10, 2010 10:31 am (#161 of 164)

I'd think Snape's Polyjuice would be dark, oily and crusty with a marshmallow on top. -Chemyst

Very interesting, Chemyst. I'll have to think about that for a while.

me and my shadow 813 - Feb 10, 2010 1:43 pm (#162 of 164)

I love Severus but all I can think of is his greasy hair and how that might affect the potion when you placed a strand of it into the mix.

legolas returns- Feb 10, 2010 2:30 pm (#163 of 164)

The potion is icky enough without the added grease .

Choices - Feb 11, 2010 9:45 am (#164 of 164)

Eweee, Polyjuice Potion with Essence of Bryllcream. Sounds like Snape.
