six months and a deposit
That would be 20 Galleons per month. I did some research on wizard money in the Lexicon, and among other things I found that 12 Galleons was the price of a 12-week Apparition course, while the monthly salary of an Assistant Manager at Flourish and Blotts was 42 Galleons - so 120 Galleons per month for just a room seemed a bit too much. On the other hand, second-hand cauldrons and omnioculars cost 10 Galleons per piece, and the price of Advanced Potion-Making is 9 Galleons!

Yes Julia, those figures are really inconsistent, aren't they? Can you imagine a bookshop manager only earning enough to buy four and a half books a month - hardback I know, but still!

Hi Verity! I was stumped a while back how to continue the room for rent ad. I've been waiting to jump in. I'm visiting my in-laws and I have a bit of time free right now. Tomorrow will be heavy duty cooking, feasting, American football and lounging around talking to family in that order. I'll pop in when I have the chance. Hope the flooding is receding and recovery is underway.

Presumably, 'Prudence' has a collar with a name tag, since this is a 'Found' ad, not a 'Lost' ad.
BB, apart from some food and water shortages, life continues pretty much as normal in our part of Bangkok. Well, apart from the sandbags and impromptu low concrete walls that are still around everywhere and the fact that we're sharing our school facilities with another school. Lots of Bangkok is still under water though, but things are definitely into recovery mode now. Enjoy your heavy duty feasting and football extravaganza!

C/o Hogwarts.
HOUSE FOR SALE
I presume c/o counts as a word.
I was wondering about wizards moving house. I can't imagine they would do it very often. After all, in the Muggle world, someone might move house because they got a new job and needed to live closer to work, but when you're a wizard and can apparate to work, that really wouldn't be a consideration. Obviously witches and wizards grow up and flee the family nest, as we saw with Bill and Fleur and their move to Shell Cottage, but in what other circumstances would wizards move? Any ideas?

in Godric's Hollow. Resident house-elf
There can be lots of reasons for wizards to move house. They may want a bigger and better and more fashionable house (and a house-elf!) or a cheaper and smaller one, they may want to live in another part of the country (like moving from a city to the seaside - they don't have to give up their old workplaces if they can Apparate), they may need money, they may inherit an extra house, they may have had enough of their neighbours or of the ghoul in the attic , and so on.

You're right, Julia. I guess all those reasons could apply. Now I think about it, we did hear that the Dumbledore family moved after the trial, so there's a possible reason! I just get the impression that the wizarding population is fairly stable - old family homes and all that.

Yes, they seem quite stable in general, but there will probably be some wizards who move house for some reason. I think Apparition makes it possible to live wherever you want to, which means you won't have to move if you like your house and your town, but Apparition also makes is possible to move as many times as you want to without worrying about losing your job or your old friends.

I saw Mona's post on the chat thread, so I guess we're not going to see her back here before 6th December. I don't know about PAH though. Maybe we'll have to wrap this one up without her.

Perhaps PAH is at a Thanksgiving family gathering? I hope everything is all right with her. Mona seems to be having a good time!
When do we want to wrap this story up? I can go on with ads for a while yet, but you started it earlier, so perhaps you need a change.

A few more ads should do it, I think. It feels like we have a lot by now. I think it would be good to wrap it up by the end of November so we can move on to something else. I think PAH's just been too busy to visit our little thread.

LOL, Verity, perhaps they don't want to waste their time on wizards who get frightened away by the ghoul or the ghost on the first visit!
