Story #148
Hello Five Worders! Sorry for the delay in posting the official story and stats for Story #147, but I've got a few things going on at the moment, and won't be able to post the story until the end of the week. But rather than keep folks waiting, there will be a change in the usual Five Words practice of waiting to start a new story until the previous one is posted, and have a a new story start in the interim.
Thanks to Mona for compiling the posts into a Word doc and sending that doc to me, as well as compiling the stats, which are as follows:
Verity - 147 Mona - 110 PAH - 87 Azi – 24
This means that Verity has story-starting rights for Story #148. Looking forward to the start of the next story, and when Story #147 is up, I will make sure to make a note of it and provide the appropriate links.
Thanks for your patience and happy five wording!

Story #148
I'm looking forward to reading the last story in its entirety, but there's no rush PAH. I hope all the things you have going on are good things. I'm guessing that your 'year off' is coming to an end a lot quicker than you would wish.
Anyway, thanks for setting things up so the next story can get going. Here are the first five words:
Griselda Marchbanks riffled through the
I had a couple of ideas in mind for this story. Griselda Marchbanks is the elderly witch who is in charge of the Wizarding Examinations Authority and came to Hogwarts in OotP to oversee the OWLs. I was originally thinking that this story could take place in any year and it could focus on Madam Marchbanks looking through the exam papers and giving us a taste here and there of what she was reading. However, when I went to the Lexicon to get some background info to post here, I realised that her story is quite fascinating, and it might be good to try and work some of those details into the story, in which case, this story would probably have to be set during Harry's fifth year. It's open though so we could go either way, or indeed in another direction entirely. For more info on Professor Marchbanks, see the spoiler box.

- Spoiler:
- Madam Griselda Marchbanks
Born: mid-1800s.
Elderly witch, head of the Wizarding Examinations Authority (OP31) and elder of the Wizengamot, although (together with Tiberius Ogden) she resigned the latter office in protest at the appointment of Umbridge as 'Hogwarts High Inquisitor'. The Daily Prophet included her in its smear campaign, insinuating that she had 'links to subversive goblin groups' (OP15). If the accuracy of this information is on a par with the exaggerated and inflammatory items published about Harry and Dumbledore, there may be only a few grains of truth in it; Marchbanks may have an interest in goblin rights or simply have goblin friends.
Madam Marchbanks in June 1996 was tiny and stooped, her face so lined it appeared draped in cobwebs. She is at least a decade Dumbledore's senior, since when he was about 17, she was already working for the Wizarding Examinations Authority and personally administered his N.E.W.T.s. According to Neville, Madam Marchbanks is a bit like her friend Augusta Longbottom (OP31), implying that she is very formidable indeed, as well as stark upright. Neville also considered it unlikely that she was friendly with the Malfoys, because she's never mentioned them, despite Draco's claims to the contrary (OP31).
Madam Marchbanks personally examined Draco Malfoy's practical Charms O.W.L. as well as Harry's practical Astronomy, Divination, and Potions O.W.L.s (OP31).
When J.K. Rowling published the W.O.M.B.A.T. (Wizards' Ordinary Magic and Basic Aptitude test) on her website in April 0f 2006, she gave Marchbanks' name and titles as "Professor Griselda Marchbanks, CDMG, APMO, fdBB" (JKR). The meaning of the initials following her name is unclear; however, they are usually indictors of special recognition, education, or professional license.

Good story idea! Harry's fifth year would be interesting to write about, though I guess Dumbledore's N.E.W.T. exams could be fascinating, too.

I have absolutely no idea what would follow this, but checked here for the past 2 days, hoping someone had posted something. So my entry is a staller, and I hope someone can whip something up for the early 16th century that fits our story.
Verity, I have been busy with family obligations — my time off HP has not been affected by the past holiday — and I'm hoping to post Story #147 in the next day or so. As for a possible direction for this story, I'm sorry, but I'm really stumped. I don't have any ideas at the moment about how to incorporate the details of Griselda's life into our story. I've read the info. a few times, but it's not the kind of character info. that I remember easily, so I keep needing to refer to it to get a picture of her in my mind. Hopefully, some light bulbs illuminate soon.

The italics is the start of the student's answer which made Griselda chuckle.
Regarding the direction of the story, this could be one of those 'inner monologue' stories where Griselda reflects upon her life and work, or we could incorporate some of her exam supervision into the story. So we really just need to decide whether this story should take place early in her career when Dumbledore is doing his NEWTS, or during Harry's OWL year. Either could be fun. Does anyone have a preference?

Thanks, wikiepedia, for a quick intro. to this interesting slice of Scottish history. Tough times!
Verity, I have no preference... either Dumbledore's NEWTS or during Harry's OWL year is fine with me. I will really just be following others' suggestions, for the most part.

A formatting question: we're writing part of an essay in italics and then showing Griselda's inner monologue in unitalicized font? I'm asking because in previous stories, we have shown internal thinking using italics, so I just want to be sure. In the finished story, student's writing can be shown in a completely different font. Maybe, while we write the story, we use a different color to differentiate between snatches of essay and Griselda's inner monologue? So we can keep track of which is which?
EDIT: I've started working on formatting story #147, about and the Marauders' Map, and am looking for another font to use for when the Marauders talk, which put me in mind to using a different font in this story, when it's finished, to show the students' writing.

burnt witches to keep warm.
From what we have of the essay so far, this seems like a Year 5 student, and not one 2 year older, sitting for their NEWTs. At least. that's my impression.
Verity, I'd like to figure it out now, if that's okay, to avoid confusion later, to make writing the story go as smoothly as possible, as that will make collating the story go even faster. So, I propose that when we get to any parts of this story that are Griselda's inner monologue only, and not narrative, we use the color gray to indicate this change. Thanks!
In the finished story, Griselda's inner thoughts will be italicized while students' writing will appear in a different font from the rest of the story.

I've counted 'Wizard-Muggle' as two words since it is not really hyphenated.
Sounds good to me PAH.
As for this sounding like a fifth year, yes, perhaps it's an example of Crabbe or Goyle's work. Whoever it is seems pretty clueless.

Perhaps Griselda remembers previous generations of students ... she may be like Mr Ollivander, who remembers every single wand he has sold.

My other laptop, which doesn't seem to hold a charge, is going in for repair today. That laptop also has Story #147 on it. It's only started, and not completed, but I don't feel like redoing what I had done, so I will be hopeful and think that my memory will remain intact after the battery is changed and then finish formatting Story #147 later. Stay tuned!
