Firenze? Yes, the centaurs have bows, but his brethren really did a number on him when he defected, and I imagine he didn't fight back.

Verity, the Hand of Glory is not the answer, but LOL, your reasoning about the hint is actually in the right direction.

Puck, Firenze is punished by his brethren beyond measure, and in some ways he is unarmed , but the answer is something else.

Great guesses. Keep guessing, please.

Scowls in time of leisure

Grim, unlikely treasure

Cherished with great pleasure

Punished beyond measure.

Hint: Unarmed victim.

Guessed: , Detention with Dolores, , Argus Filch, Kreacher, Sirius Black, Dobby, the Hand of Glory, Firenze.

Horcrux locket? Certainly makes the wearer scowl, punished by being destroyed, and several (LV, Umbridge, Gaunt) cherished it.

It's not Wormtail, is it?

Or rather, Wormtail's silver hand?

This is a great riddle, Julia.

I was thinking the Grey Lady/Ravenclaw Ghost. The Bloody Baron loved her, but in the end killed her.

Post  Julia H. on Tue May 31, 2011 3:49 pm

I'm really enjoying all these wonderful guesses.

The answer is not Wormtail or Wormtail's silver hand, Verity, but the ideas were good.

Puck, the Grey Lady/Ravenclaw Ghost is not the answer either, but there is an important motif in her story that appears in the "story" of the answer as well.

You have earned another hint - see below.

Keep guessing, please.

Scowls in time of leisure

Grim, unlikely treasure

Cherished with great pleasure

Punished beyond measure.

Hint: Unarmed victim.

Hint 2: The riddle is not as sad as it sounds.

Guessed: , Detention with Dolores, , Argus Filch, Kreacher, Sirius Black, Dobby, the Hand of Glory, Firenze, the Horcrux locket, Wormtail, Wormtail's silver hand, the Grey Lady/Ravenclaw Ghost.

This is way, way, waaaaay out in left field, but the only remaining thing I can think of that connects to scowling, is the Viktor Krum figurine that Ron bought, and then bashed after the Yule Ball.

Scowls in time of leisure

Grim, unlikely treasure

Cherished with great pleasure

Punished beyond measure.

Lady Arabella, this is a very good guess! So good, in fact, that...

* answers below *
Spoiler:
the Viktor Krum figurine is the answer to the riddle! Well done!

Scowls in time of leisure
The little figurine imitates Viktor so well that it can even scowl. Ron bought it during the summer holiday, at the QWC - leisure time.

Grim, unlikely treasure
Viktor is not the typical star, yet he is very popular, despite his unfriendly appearance; and the moving figurine is greatly valued by fans.

Cherished with great pleasure
Ron is very proud of his Krum-figurine. (He shows it off on the Hogwarts Express.)

Punished beyond measure.
After the Yule Ball, a jealous Ron "takes revenge" on the harmless, innocent toy.

Hint: Unarmed victim.
"Unarmed" is a pun: The figurine has no weapons, and Harry finds its arm ripped off after the Yule Ball.

Hint 2: The riddle is not as sad as it sounds.
The "victim" is only an object, after all.
Guessed:
Spoiler:
, Detention with Dolores, , Argus Filch, Kreacher, Sirius Black, Dobby, the Hand of Glory, Firenze, the Horcrux locket, Wormtail, Wormtail's silver hand, the Grey Lady/Ravenclaw Ghost.

to Lady Arabella! I look forward to your next riddle!

New Riddle #7

Post  Lady Arabella on Tue May 31, 2011 9:07 pm

I think this is too easy, but once I got the rhyme in my head, I couldn't change it to make the clues more obscure.

Taking an afternoon respite, I see.

Congratulations on solving Julia's riddle, Lady A. I can't believe nobody's had a guess at yours yet. I'll get the obvious guess out of the way - is it Peeves?

The riddle makes me think of the cakes that knocked out Crabb and Goyle in CoS in the Polyjuice Potion chapter.

That's a good guess Julia. I'm still totally stumped, but I'll guess Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop.

edited to add: After a quick check of the books, I discovered there are two answers that fit equally well . . . . (sigh). But that doubles your chances!

Choices, that is a good guess, but not what I was thinking of.

Verity is getting even closer, although the answer isn't actually found at Madam Puddifoot's.

Concentrate on the last line . . .

Julia has the answer!! But everyone had some interesting guesses - I enjoyed hearing them. Smile

Taking an afternoon respite, I see.
Clotted cream cakes - as genteel as can be!
But while you are nibbling the best fromage blanc,
Be ever so careful, or I'LL GET YOUR CONK!

* answers below *
Spoiler:

The answer was a nose-biting teacup.

Taking an afternoon respite, I see,
Clotted-cream cakes, as genteel as can be!

I was trying to suggest afternoon tea or a tea party, where a tea cup would be used. Afternoon tea is often considered a "respite" (at least, according to my British brother-in-law), and clotted cream is often served.

But while you are nibbling the best fromage blanc
OK - this existed solely for the sake of the rhyme, but when I checked online, fromage blanc can be served with fruit and sugar for dessert, so I thought it wouldn't be completely out of place for tea.

Be ever so careful, or I'LL GET YOUR CONK!
Peeves' line when grabbing your nose was, "GOT YOUR CONK!"

When I checked CoS (which is where I thought I read about the cup ), I discovered the nose-grabbing implement was a pair of enchanted sugar tongs, so that answer would have worked as well.
Julia, I look forward to your next riddle!
