Snape's Patronus

Post  Lady Arabella on Mon Mar 16, 2015 2:26 pm

The following is an archive of material originally posted on the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum, hosted by World Crossing, which ceased operations on April 15, 2011.

Archivist's notes:  In the following vote, Pamzter and me and my shadow 813 appear to have some Seer blood.

What form does Snape's Patronus take?

   A - Spider
   B - Bat
   C - Chameleon
   D - Augurey or Phoenix
E - Something else (state what)
F - I refuse to believe he can produce one

(Suggested by Madame Pomfrey)

This poll will be closed sometime after 8pm on July 18th.

E. Whatever Lily's is.

Since I voted on the other Snape's Patronus thread that he can't produce one, I guess I'm going to stick with it over here. My vote is F. I refuse to believe he can produce one.

I like B. It goes with Harry's statement from GoF that Snape could not have beaten him to Krum and Crouch unless he could turn into a bat or something. It's just the sort of throw away comment that might be a clue.

I'm going with a mildly random guess D, because I don't like A, B or C, and can't think of anything else.

D - An Augurey.

Strike my earlier guess of D, I just listened to PotterCast 101 and I'm going to go with E, a fox, per the events of HBP2.

B Purely because there are so many references to him being bat-like.

D the Augurey phoenix. Black and green, mournful looking and thin. Looks like a vulture. Yep, that sounds like a Snape who is loyal to Dumbledore.

D, Augerey. And I think augerey and phoenix need to be two different choices, as I think JKR invented the augerey specifically for Snape, as a phoenix is too directly evocative of Dumbledore.

Though I really like the idea that his patronus is a fox! Good catch!

Good idea for a poll!

============================

Edited to say, Miss Journeymom votes for B, Bat.

It's probably D, Augurey, but -

I'm going to vote E - a lily - simply because I'm hopelessly romantically wishing Severus holds loving memories of the young vivacious girl that befriended him during his lonely childhood...sigh.

E: a snake, or some sort of reptile, given all the references we've had to the damp, dark potion dungeon. But if it is some sort of reptile, it would be something bigger than a camelleon....just because I believe Snape is a very powerful wizard. I picture something big and ugly and reptilian and dangerous...like a commodo dragon! Yup, that's it....a commodo dragon. **shivers**

Choices - Jul 8, 2007 2:40 pm (#27 of 43)

A - Spider

I not entirely sure if I think his Patronus would be a spider or if that is his animagus form (if he has one)?

freshwater - Jul 9, 2007 9:18 am (#28 of 43)

Wow, Choices, you and I are really differing on this one: me- a comodo dragon, you- a spider! I think a spider is sneaky and sly enough to be Snape's patronus, but is far too delicate to represent any qualities of his.

Madam Pince - Jul 9, 2007 10:35 am (#29 of 43)

I'll go with B - a bat because of all the "bat" references in the text...

...but I also want to say a phoenix. There must be some reason JKR wouldn't reveal the answer when she was asked in interview; it must be spoiler-ish. A phoenix would certainly be spoiler-ish!
