Rank the Seven Books (10/5/07-11/5/07)

Edited Apr 6, 2009 3:50 pm

The Harry Potter Series is complete and it's time to rank the books as to how you like each book in comparison with the other six. This is going to be a thinking-cap poll and I need to first explain the procedures.

First rank the books from first to seventh. Then apply your points according to the directions below. There are fifty (50) points to be distributed among the seven books and can vary according to your feelings, as long as the distribution stays within the following guidelines.

 1. First distribute the first forty-nine points in the following order:
   a. Best liked - 13 points
   b. Second best - 11 points
   c. Third best - 9 points
   d. Fourth best - 7 points
   e. Fifth best - 5 points
   f. Sixth best - 3 points
   g. Least liked - 1 points

 2. Next make your personal adjustments of first forty-nine points using the following guidelines:
   a. If you feel that each of the seven books were all equal, assign seven points to each of the seven books, totalling 49 points.
   b. If you feel two books are tied for the same place, add the points for the two books, divide that total by two (2), and assign the average to each of the two books. Example: If you feel two books are tied for third place, add the 9 and 7 points available, which totals 16, and divide by 2. The average of 8 points is assigned to each of the two books.
   c. If you feel three books are tied for the same place, add the points for the three books, divide that total by three (3), and assign the average to each of the three books. Example: If you feel three books are tied for second place, add the 11, 9, and 7 points available, which totals 27, and divide by 3. The average of 9 points is assigned to each of the three books.
   d. If you feel four books are tied for the same place, add the points for the four books, divide that total by four (4), and assign the average to each of the four books. Example: If you feel four books are tied for second place, add the 11, 9, 7, and 5 points available, which totals 32, and divide by 4. The average of 8 points is assigned to each of the four books.
   d. You are welcome to have a five- or six-way tie also; however I will not provide the details here. I felt that that would have been too, too much details.
   e. The least number of points any book can receive is one (1) and the most number of points Best liked - 13 points

 3. You have one bonus point that must be assigned to only one book. Example: If you decide to assign it to the best like book, that book would be able to have a maximum of 14 points.

 4. Please make sure that your total points adds up to fifty (50). If the total is incorrect, your vote will not be counted. Remember you have 30 minutes to edit your post; therefore please check your work and use your edit time accordingly.

   Points:

   ___   A - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

___   B - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

___   C - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

___   D - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

___   E - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

___   F - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

___   G - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

   ___   Total Points

This poll will be closed sometime after 8pm (PST; server time) on November 5th. I extended the ranking period per some requests. - Kip 4 Nov 07

Below is a cut-and-paste form for you to use if you so desire. I have entered seven (7) points for each of the seven books and added the one bonus point to the last book to finalize the fifty (50) points. You are welcome to change the points to meet your thoughts.

To cut-and-paste, highlight and copy everything below and paste to your post. Once the information below is in your post, you can adjust the numbers to meet your preferences. The cut-and-paste area to be copied starts with the  [ b ]and ends with the         [/b  ], which will make the area bold and then remove the bold type.

I know it's kind of boring, but I basically think the books gradually improved over time, with a few exceptions. I gave the bonus point to HBP, my third favorite, as my top two, OoP and DH, I have not decided between as a favorite yet.

Basically, I loved books 5 and 6 as in-depth big books. I thought books 1, 2, and 3 work very well in terms of being quite cohesive and with excellent plot and arcs. GOF was incredibly episodic to me, but otherwise very enjoyable. And DH had more holes than a sieve, abandoned arcs and threads, continuity errors, and overall major lack of thorough editing.

Thanks for the "cut-and-paste", Kip!

Actually, I won't change a thing to it because I see the series as a whole, each part being for me equally important (especially from a symbolic point of view). The "bonus point" is for the DH because it is the "crowning" of the series as Harry reaches the end of the journey.

I hope I did this right. It equals 50 anyway...

I rank GoF as my favourite and CoS as the worst. I think book 4 was the ideal length with a brilliant plot. Book 2 bored me to tears and the writing, in retrospect, seems very child-like (which is why PS is also low ranked). DH is currently fairly low ranked, although it may grow on me over time and rise. I still haven't worked out the plot. HBP and OotP I like equally and couldn't choose between them.

Kip, are we supposed to do two listings or one? I am confused...

Added Edit to Meg: Do only one list like everyone else has been doing; however when you assign the points to each of the books, that will make the two lists the same. The cut-and-paste form and your associated ranking (or power) numbers will provide the data that I need to generate a report of how our members feel about the books. I hope that makes sense. - Kip 9:55 am Sat 6 Oct 2007

Wow, I've been hoping for this poll for a while. Thanks!

'Half-Blood Prince' is sheer perfection to me. While I appreciate the backstories and kids' plots (i.e. the romances, the schoolwork, etc.) in the other books, this is the one which ties up all plots the most smoothly. I love all seven books because I'm a rabid HP fan, but this one is the best piece of writing of the bunch, very closely followed by 'Prisoner of Azkaban'. There's nothing I'd wanted edited in these two.

I like GoF & OotP best because they really show the maturation of Harry at a really tough age (since I work with students aged 12-18, I have always felt that 14 & 15 year olds have the roughest time). CoS is the weakest of the 7 books in my opinion, so I gave it only 1 point. Of the remaining 4 books, I like PoA just a bit more, since I have always been a "good werewolf" fan.

I like OotP the best. I love the emotions and themes. It really needed better editing, though.

PoA came in a strong second. It's her best plotting, excepting the Time Turner. Time travel is generally a bad idea.

I placed GoF third because I see it as a powerful turning point in the series. The return of Voldy, Cedric's murder, and Dumbledore's fallibility make up for the rambling denouement.

I'm putting PS/SS fourth because it started it all, and it deserves the 7 for starting the magic.

DH is fifth. I'm having a love-hate relationship with this book. On the one hand Harry's journey is exceptional, the writing is pretty good, and Rowling's wit is in high form, so I love it. On the other hand, some themes and plot threads from earlier in the series are never satisfactorily resolved, Dumbledore's convoluted plotting annoys me to no end, and I found many elements at the end to be confusing. A poll of my husband and four friends revealed that they can't explain how the end worked either. Gah.

CoS, sixth place, used to be my least favorite book. It has grown on me over the years, though, and HBP did manage to make it more interesting because of the diary Horcrux. I think one reason it doesn't score high for me is because the new characters in this book are all so annoying-- Lockhart, Myrtle, Colin Creevy.

HBP is dead last. It just seems off somehow. The resolution of the HBP plots in DH didn't help it any.

I liked PS/SS because it's where all the fun began, and POA because of the Marauders and the beginnings of Harry's parents' backstory from the Marauders' POV. The other 4 books (GoF, OotP, HBP, and DH) I liked more or less the same amount, with CoS being my least favorite, I suppose (as the number of times I've chosen to reread it is far less than any of the other books).

Of the first 5 books, POA was always my favorite. Then, with HBP and DH (both of which I really loved) I had a hard decision - so I've decided to tie them in first place, and give the bonus point to POA (which I still love, but just can't read anymore, as I've read it so much ).

My 2 favorites in the series were POA and OOtP. I went with SS next because it was the beginning of all the magic, then DH for being such a rollercoaster ride of emotion for me. I really had trouble choosing between HBP and COS for last place, so I gave COS the bonus point so it at least wouldn't be sitting there with only one point! I loved them all!

Up to now, the nineteen posts consist of 16 valid entries, 1 non-valid entry (Phelim Mcintyre - only 49 points), and 2 discussion posts. I have entered the totals from the sixteen valid entries and the average in the form below so that you would have some idea of how the members so far feel about the books.

   110 pts = 6.500 aver   6th   A - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

52 pts = 3.25 aver   7th   B - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

150 pts = 9.375 aver   1st   C - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

110 pts = 6.875 aver   5th   D - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

135 pts = 8.4375 aver   2nd   E - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

115 pts = 7.1875 aver   4th   F - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

   134 pts = 8.375 aver   3rd   G - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

   800 pts = 50.0000 aver     Total Points

A few thoughts when you analyze this data, considering there are 50 points available to be split among the 7 books, the average would be 7.1429 points per book if everything were equal. The sixth-ranked book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone), at present, is less that three-quarters of a point less than the average and the top-ranked book (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) is slightly better than two points over the average.

The only clear-cut position, as of now, belongs to the second book (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

I have enjoyed reading each member's comments. I look forward to seeing how the data changes over the next few weeks.

Wow this is challenging. (I did the math several times so as to not be disqualified.)

The question for me was do I give the bonus point to PS/SS because it was the first in the series and got me hooked, or POA for giving us Sirius a man who knows friendship, love and loyalty, or HBP because it has one of the most beautifully written most passionate paragraphs, the last one, where Harry knows he can face anything as long as he has Ron and Hermione by his side?

I am always pleasantly surprised when I read Cos, because it is a much better book reading it, that when you remember it so that couldn't be the bottom of my list. I certainly could not give any of the books just one point so I ended up giving OoTP the bonus, I guess because of the anxiety I felt before it's release.

I think Mrs. Sirius and Pesky might be the only people not to have put COS dead last… poor little guy! EDIT: Ooh, Veritaserum has OOP and COS tied for last. It's really interesting to see trends among the voters -- like, if you liked one book, you probably didn't like this other book. All three of you didn't like OOP.

EDIT 2: Hmm, Mrs. Brisbee didn't put COS last, but OOP is her favorite book. Weird! Elanor and mona amon tied all the books (except for the bonus point).

wynnleaf doesn't seem to fit any of these patterns. COS as third-least-favorite, OOP as favorite, DH as least favorite.

This is really cool!

Another confidence booster for CoS: the same friend listed PoA among her bottom three. Take that, Mr. High And Mighty Time-Traveller!

I'm also rather lonely in my position of worshipping HBP as the ideal of HP perfection!

9   F - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

13   G - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Tied for 1st place +bonus).

Reasons for points-

PS-Nothing wrong with the book but it was just a taster of what was to come. Was hooked after reading this.

COS-Irratated by the characters. Grr!

POA-Harry finds out about his father/ his friends and finds that he has a god father. Warm and fuzzy stuff for our favourite orphan .

GOF-Enjoyable stuff.

OOP-Too much padding but liked the ending of the book. Umbrige still causes me to shudder.

HBP-Good stuff. Loved finding out about Voldemort. Snape-need I say more?

DH-Emotional wreck after reading this especially the deaths/Harry going to his death with his four parental figures (His parents+Godfather and Lupin). Loved every second. Characters back story was fascinating and the way that characters from previous books had their bow at the curtain call was brilliant. Harrys victory was great-it was not sickly sweet which was a good surprise.

3 PS

9 CoS

13 PoA

11 GoF

1 OoP

6 HBP

7 DH

I liked the second book.

I gave the bonus point to HBP because it would have been the best if the old Potions book had ended up belonging to Draco's grandfather.

Deathly Hallows got the bonus point because it did such a nice job wrapping things up while at the same time it introduced us to so many new things in the magical world.

I rated Philosiphers Stone as a tie for #1 for similar reasons. It introduced us to the wizarding world and made us all come back for more!

I rated Half Blood Prince low for two reasons. I thought all the 'lessons' with Dumbledore were a bit repetitive in themselves even though they gave us insite into Tom Riddle, and it was such an obvious lead in to Deathly Hallows and not a complete story unto its self.

I would have liked to give more points to the other books, and as far as preference I could reshuffle them all day and not feel good about it. In the end I decided on the cowards way out - a four way tie.

PS gets 6 because it starts the series and I can always remember where I was when I first read Harry Potter after making fun of my roommate for 2 years about it.

Chamber isn't my favorite, and I needed more points in other places.

I really loved Prisoner, and I read it just before Goblet came out, so I kept rereading it. Lupin and Sirius are two of my favorite literary characters ever.

Goblet is a solid book. 'Nuf said.

Phoenix opened up a new part of the wizarding world in my eyes, and I just think that it is so crucial to setting up the end of the series for our eyes, as well as Harry's, to be opened up to all of this.

Half Blood Prince is growing on me, but I was so, SO unhappy the first time I read it, I didn't read it again until after DH. I just couldn't believe that Snape was really Voldemort's man, I refused to read it again until after I knew he wasn't really.

DH, of course, brought everything together and I have never, ever, in my life, sobbed during a book more than once. I read the last 300 pages through a constant haze of tears.

Uncle Brad said it pretty well for me. DH tied all of the saga together wonderfully, so I placed it first.

I tied PS/SS and PoA for a couple of reasons. PS/SS introduced me to the magical world of Harry Potter, so I will always love it. PoA gave us two of my favorite characters from the series, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. They not only proved wonderful friends to Harry, but they provided him with two living links to his parents, especially his dad.

GoF gave us a glimpse of Wizards from other countries and really prepared us for what Harry was up against. OotP gave us a couple of outstanding villains in Umbridge and Bella. It also showed us a peep at the stuff of which Neville was made in the MoM battle. I liked it!

I can't really put my finger on why I did not like HBP as well as some of the books I ranked higher. I can only say it is the one book from the series that I have NOT read more than once.

While CoS had some interesting moments, I just didn't like it as well as the other books. Sorry!

Sorry GOF - you are tedious. Just plot and no fun.

Bonus point to HBP, originally on a par with POA with 12 points each. POA for introducing lots of interesting people and for being so thrilling and emotional that it turned me into a dedicated HP fan. HBP: Obviously JKR sensed that readers had enough of Umbridge and tragedy, so she wrote something with lots of funny scenes and DD again and lots of familiar Hogwarts folklore. I had completely forgotten about it and when I read it again I had practically a new, brilliant book.

I have gone back and forth on this so many times. I did not "like" all of HBP as much as I liked some of the other books but I ended up putting it higher up on the list because I got so wrapped up in it. I did not dislike CoS but simply liked other books more. As for putting DH first...in fairness to the other books, they are part of the reason I liked it so much; if they hadn't created so many characters I cared about, I would not have been so immersed in DH. But I have to pick numbers, and so here they are.

5 Chamber of Secrets

6 Order of the Phoenix

5 Half-Blood Prince

This was hard to decide, I like them all. I was thinking if I was a deserted island, which one would I want with me. I think that it would be DH, because I know everything else and I'd like to reread the ending. Then I thought "What if I could only have read one, which one would I pick?". I thought that DH, OotP, and HBP are really too deep to really 'get' without all of the backstory we get in the earlier books. Any of the earlier books would work, but there is so much more to the WW than what we find in PS/SS and CoS.PoA or GoF are nearly self contained, but I would pick PoA because I think that it finishes the early books with Gryffindor winning the Quidditch Cup, and it opens vistas into the rest of the series.

Wow.

If I'd had any real idea what would be involved in tallying this poll..... Please picture me and my little paper-and-pencil grid of tally marks, with no calculator in sight (which should be huge clue that I am not your basic "numbers person"!). Therefore....no blood oath guarantees are made as to the mathematical accuracy of the results of this poll to the second decimal place....although I did do my best and I do believe it is a fair representation of the votes cast.

Here is the average of points assigned to each book (total points cast for the book, divided by 31 votes per book cast):

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone -- 6.42 points

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets -- 3.09 points

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban -- 9.65 points

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire -- 6.61 points

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- 7.83 points

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince -- 7.65 points

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- 9.54 points

Here are the percentage of points for each book, from the total points cast in the poll (total points per book divided by total points assigned during poll(1,561) = % of total points).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone -- 199 points / 12.75%

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets -- 96 points / 6.14%

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban -- 299 points / 19.15%

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire -- 205 points / 13.14%

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- 229 points / 14.67%

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince -- 237 points / 15.18%

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- 296 points / 18.96%

========================================

To sum up (no pun intended ).....

In order of highest percentage of points awarded:

19.15% -- Prisoner of Azkaban

18.96% -- Deathly Hallows

15.18% -- Half-Blood Prince

14.67% -- Order of the Phoenix

13.14% -- Goblet of Fire

12.75% -- Philosopher's Stone

6.14% -- Chamber of Secrets

Kip,is there some way to post the results in a table? What I find most interesting --after the rankings by % of total points-- is the distribution of the points. For example: PS/SS got the bulk of its points in the 3-9 point range; CoS got no points higher than 9, with the bulk of its points in the 3-7 point range; and although OotP was ranked 4th, the bulk of its points were either in the 10-15 point range (the voter's favorite of the 7 books) or in the 3-7 point range; and OotP got more of its points --116 points-- from "high value votes" (12-15 points) than any other book except DH --149 points in the 12-13 point range....from which I draw the conclusion that folks either liked OotP best of the 7, or it fell in the lower-middle of the pack for them. This also seems to indicate that more people liked OotP best of the 7, than liked PoA or HBP best of the 7....hmmmmmm. So.....if it is possible to post the results in a table, it might lead to some interesting analysis and discussion.

_____________________________________

freshwater - Apr 5, 2009 10:53 am (#55 of 58)

Actually....now that I re-read my conclusions in the last paragraph above, I must make a correction:

...although OotP was ranked 4th, the bulk of its points were either in the 10-15 point range (the voter's favorite of the 7 books) or in the 3-7 point range; and OotP got more of its points --116 points-- from high value votes" (12-15 points) than any other book except DH --149 points in the 12-13 point range....from which I draw the conclusion that folks either liked OotP best of the 7, or it fell in the lower-middle of the pack for them. This also seems to indicate that more people liked OotP best of the 7, than liked PoA or HBP best of the 7....hmmmmmm."--freshwater

I really can't say that "more people" liked OotP best (it's a high amount of points totaled from some high point votes) ....although the distribution of the points does suggest that "some people felt very strongly about OotP being their favorite (high point earner) of the 7 books...I think we can even say that "those who liked OotP best felt more strongly about it than those who liked PoA or HBP best."

Of course, you can't really challenge my conclusions unless we find a way to post the results in some sort of table or chart.....
