What Is Your Preferred Means of Magical Transportation?

This poll was suggested and designed in an April 29th post by Hungarian Horntail 11. Thank you, HH11! Because you had so many good choices, I divided them in to smaller groups.

BTW, as we all know, flying carpets are illegal, and so are not included in this poll. Also, I thought about including Abraxan horses with the magical creatures...but as no one rode one in canon...I did not.

Please choose only one answer for each of the three sections, for a total of 3 answers.

Which of these is your preferred form of magical transportation?

A) All magic, all the time:

1) Floo Network

2) broomstick

3) Apparating

4) Portkey

5) the Aunt Marge special **cue music** Up, Up and A-way-ay...

=======================================

B) Magical creatures:

1) Hippogriff

2) Thestral

3) house elf apparition

===================================

C) Magical Machinery:

1) Hogwarts Express

2) Durmstrang Ship

3) Beauxbeaton's Carriage

4) enchanted Ford Anglia

5) Sirius' motorcycle

6) the Knightbus

A-3) Apparating- It's personal and precise. B-1) Hippogriff- I've always wanted to fly but I definitely want something more substantial than a broomstick to hold on to. C-1) Hogwarts Express- I love trains.

A -- Apparating
B -- House-elf apparition, given my knees and back (I'm not sure how well I'd do on the back of a hippogriff or thestral.)
C -- Hogwarts Express (I love trains, too, and I don't get the opportunity to travel via rail where I live.)

A-3: portkey...I was soooo disappointed to learn of the unpleasant squeezing sensation while apparating!

B-1: Hippogriff...while I could see the thestral beneath me at least, I prefer wings with feathers.

C-5: Sirius' motorcycle....preferrably with Sirius driving! No need for a side-car...I'll just sit behind him and hold on tight!

A - 3 Apparating, even if it feels unpleasant!

B - 2 Thestral

C - 1 Hogwarts Express of course!

A) Apparating

Even if there is an unpleasant feeling, it does not last long and you can be in a completely different place in almost no time.

B) Hippogriff

(I'd see a thestral, too, but a hippogriff looks more attractive.)

C) Hogwarts Express

For a number of reasons:

The train would probably take me to Hogwarts (and I could see Platform 9 3/4 as well).

Perhaps it would mean that the owl that failed to come when I was 11 has finally arrived...

For the feeling, the atmosphere and because of the sweets that can be bought on the train.

Further votes from Julia's family:

Julia's husband votes in the same way as Julia.

Julia's two children:

A) Apparating

B) They'd like a write-in vote: travelling with a phoenix.

C) Hogwarts Express

I agree with Katrira, both when it comes to means of transportation and the reasons for my choices.

A: 3) Apparating - well, to quote Katrira, it's personal and precise, just seems so practical

B: 1) Hippogriff - I'm afraid of heights, but then there is something fascinating about flying. And I don't think I can see Thestrals.

C: 1) Hogwarts Express - I'm a hopeless train romantic. I just love to travel by train!

Edit: I really liked your reasons for choosing Hogwarts Express, Julia!

1) Hippogriff

5) Sirius' motorcycle (Adding that it was not nice to make me choose between the motorcycle and the Hogwarts Express)

A) 3 Apparating, preferably as perfectly as a House Elf.

B) 3 House Elf Apparition

C) 4 The enchanted Ford Anglia, with lots of food and soft drinks and a book.

A 3. It's quick. I like that.

B 2. Seems the most interesting.

C 5. It's the Sirius connotation. If the bike wasn't on the list I'd have chosen the Hogwart's Express since I love travelling by train.

A) Broomstick, it may not be the most practical but just because it's so cool.

B) Hippogriff

C) Hogwarts Express, because it would hopefully be taking me to Hogwarts!

Julia, I love the way your kids "think outside the box"! I can't believe I forgot about flashing away with a phoenix like DD! I think I'll change my magical creatures vote from Hippogriff to Phoenix.

Liz Mann - May 13, 2008 6:58 am (#18 of 32)

A) Apparition - it's the quickest

B) House Elf Apparition - because the other two fly and I don't like flying

C) Hogwarts Express - old fashioned trains have a certain appeal to me thanks to Harry Potter

A.3) Apparating, because it is quick, and would be handy in an emergency. I almost went with Broomstick, though, because of all the practical applications I can think of. I could hover when picking apples, pears, or cherries, or when fixing a roof slate. I'm pretty sure if I tried Apparating up to my roof I'd just fall off.

B. Julia's Children) Phoenix! Too cool.

C.4) enchanted Ford Anglia. You should see all the stuff my husband tries to pack in the car when we go on vacation. And my daughter isn't much better, she wants to take her entire bedroom. With the Ford Anglia, it would all fit! Plus, it can fly, and maybe even go invisible.

A) All magic, all the time:

1) Floo Network -- too dirty and messy, and you have to have supplies.

2) broomstick -- feels unsteady, you could fall off

3) Apparating -- efficient, practical, quick, nothing external needed.

4) Portkey -- I don't want to feel anything pulling on my navel.

5) the Aunt Marge special -- well obviously not...

=======================================

B) Magical creatures:

1) Hippogriff -- too dangerous, nothing to grip

2) Thestral -- like riding a horse, and they won't hurt you.

3) house elf apparition -- just... nah.

===================================

C) Magical Machinery:

1) Hogwarts Express -- relaxing; you can eat, sleep, read...

2) Durmstrang Ship -- could get seasick, or boat could leak...

3) Beauxbeaton's Carriage -- movie version looked unsteady to me

4) enchanted Ford Anglia -- after the Willow chaos? Are you kidding?

5) Sirius' motorcycle -- firmly believe motorcycles are dangerous, even magical ones...

6) the Knightbus -- it makes Madam Marsh sick...

A   apparating
B   book thestral (but if we were voting on movie creatures, I'd change to hippogriff– no dragons? centaurs?)
C   ...are you sure a broom can't count as a machine? Some of the more recent models seem to be highly engineered. If you could promise me good weather, I'd choose the bike; but I've had thousands of miles riding in bad weather and I've had my fill of cold & wet. I vote train then.

================================================

When I saw Julia's children's suggestion of the Phoenix, I thought of holding onto its tail feathers to escape the Chamber;  ...wouldn't your arms get strained quickly? ...especially if you are hauling Lockhart?

LOL! You're being entirely too logical for someone who is using magic, Chemyst! I expect some of the phoenix's magic filters down to enable you to maintain a grip and to reduce the strain on your muscles....besides, don't phoenixes flash from one place to another like in an instant? Maybe Julia's kids can tell us......?

Oh, yes, they can. I had the same kind of reservation but they said they remembered that Harry felt as light as feather as he was holding onto the Phoenix, which must be a good feeling... so it cannot be so bad for the arms. (I have not checked the exact quote though.) I guess they would enjoy it precisely because it is ... well, different.

I have a favor to ask....Hungarian Horntail 11 suggested a poll about the bravest person or bravest act/moment in the series....or maybe we should do it by book? Anyway, if one occurs to you, please post it in the "Poll Suggestions--Submit Yours Here" thread. If I try to list them all myself I'm sure to omit some of the best.

Also, I'd like to do a poll on the best or most beautiful description in each book. If you would, again, post those in the "Poll Suggestions--Submit Yours Here" thread...maybe as you are re-reading one of the books....that would be an enormus help. I plan to record some as I participate in the series re-read scheduled to start sometime this summer (???), but collecting them that way will take quite a while.

The polls will only be as good as the input from our members. Thanks for your help!

Hi everybody! So it's been eons since I posted in the Forum (I know, I say that every time I come back to post, but it's always true), but I had to pop in and vote because there are such great polls going on right now! Thanks to freshwater for coordinating all of these. (I'm not really "back" yet… my last day of classes was yesterday but I have finals the next week and a half… but I feel good enough to come in and procrastinate that studying a little. Five Worders – it is a little daunting facing 1070 posts!! But I'll try sooner or later!)

For this poll, give me:
A, 3: Apparating. Totally agree with Madam P (**waves**). Quick and dirty. Except it's not dirty, it's quite clean. But all of them have this potential for going horribly wrong/painful… I don't think I really prefer any of these methods. But Apparating gets it over with the fastest.

B, 2: Thestral. I agree with Chemyst -- movie Buckbeak seems like a ton fun, but so were the movie thestrals, and I love the book thestrals so much—so eerie.

C, 1: Because trains are awesome and this train is so symbolic!

I hope it's not too late, though I'm past the deadline date. Just popping in to make a quick registry:

A - 1 Apparating because sometimes you need to be quick.

B - 2 Thestrals because sometimes you need a thrill and should feel the wind in your face (even if others can't see how)

C - 1 Hogwarts's Express because sometimes you just have to let things run themselves.

PS: Hi Finn!

I apologize for the late update on the polls. My laptop died last Thursday, and I haven't been able to stay after work to use the computer until today.

Here are the results for this poll:

For the category of magical transportation by magic:

Floo, portkey and the "Aunt Marge special" all got no votes.

Apparating got 84% of the vote, with riding a broomstick taking the remaining 16%.

-------------------------

For the transportation by magical creature category:

Hippogriff got 40% of the vote.

Thestral got 28% of the vote.

Apparition with a house elf got 20% of the vote,

and the write-in suggestion of travel by phoenix got 12% of the vote.

---------------

For the magical machinery category:

The Durmstrang Ship and the Beauxbeaton's Carriage both got no votes.

The Hogwarts Express took 68% of the vote.

Sirius' motorcycle got 20% of the vote.

The enchanted Ford Anglia got 8% of the vote,

and the Knight Bus got 4% of the vote.

Edited to change 85 to 8%~shepherdess
