Second Pennsylvania Gathering 2005

boop - Jan 18, 2005 5:40 pm
Edited by Kip Carter Dec 12, 2005 11:42 pm

This thread is for information about the gathering. If you have questions please feel free to ask, I will get back to you as soon as possible. The Date we are looking at is July 23rd. One week after book 6 comes out. Just a good way to meet fellow forum members, and talk in person about the book. This gathering is open to any forum member interested in coming. We had one last year and everyone who came had a great time. If anyone is good at planning and has some ideas please feel free to post them for me. I will accept any help I can get. Just keep checking back for more information. Thanks

Boop

YAY, I get to be the person to post on this shiny new thread. I have no idea what I'm doing this summer, but you can bet your new copy of HBP that I will be there. What are the plans for doing things? Are we going to meet in the park again, go see a movie, have many meals? Whatever it is, I can't wait!

_____________________________________

Accio Sirius - Jan 18, 2005 7:06 pm (#2 of 162)

Where again was the first meeting? I hated to miss that one. Hopefully I can plan waaaaay ahead.

boop - Jan 18, 2005 7:34 pm (#3 of 162)

The gathering will be held at Governors Park on Sat July 23rd. The Park is in Bellefonte Pennsylvania, 15 minutes from State College.

At the park there is a swimming pool, basket ball court and a play ground.,

There will be food, drinks, games and fun for everyone. I will put a menu up at a later date.

Anyone who wants to come Friday, we will meet at the Wal-Mart parking lot. Then go to dinner from there see a movie.

scully jones - Jan 18, 2005 8:01 pm (#4 of 162)

Brandon and I are definitely in!

*EDIT*

Oh shoot! We just found out that July 23rd is the date of a family reunion we HAVE to go to! We really ,really want to go to the gathering... Is there any possible way to have the gathering on Harry's Birthday weekend? It would give the slightly slower readers time to complete the book before we meet! We'll talk on messenger later, Betty!

_____________________________________

Julia. - Jan 18, 2005 9:22 pm (#5 of 162)

Oh, yuck! I have no life, so if we want to have the gathering a week later and make it a birthday party for Harry and Neville (which, by the way, I think is a great idea and an excellent occasion to eat cake) that will work just fine for me!

_____________________________________

boop - Jan 19, 2005 4:30 am (#6 of 162)

I have no problem changing the gather date to July 30th. WE can song happy birthday to Harry and Neville. This will also give people time to finish reading the book.

boop

~~~~New Gathering Date will be July 30th~~~~~
_____________________________________
mike miller - Jan 19, 2005 11:00 am (#7 of 162)
Betty - Either date looks good for me, I do like the idea of giving us slow readers a few extra days to finish the book. Please let us know what menu plans you are making because I would love to be able to bring something beside myself.
_____________________________________
Lady Kazuma - Jan 20, 2005 6:25 am (#8 of 162)
Hmm...July 30th is only 1 day after my birthday, and I'm not sure my mom would want me to leave then. On the other hand, I do get to take my birthday off work, so maybe it is a good thing... Hmm...
Well, I want to go. If I do, I'll probably be bringing my brother along again. I'll just have to ask. I'll get back to you.
_____________________________________
Accio Sirius - Jan 20, 2005 2:31 pm (#9 of 162)
The 30th may put me out of contention. We just got an offer for a beach house the last week of July. It may not coincide, but I'll keep it in mind!
_____________________________________
Tomoé - Jan 20, 2005 7:36 pm (#10 of 162)
Since I have no more life than Julia, it doesn't matter to me to come for the 23rd or the 30th.
librarian314 - Jan 22, 2005 8:19 am (#11 of 162)
Hey all!
Count the Mr., Mrs. and kid **michelle the librarian**s in for either date. We've got good friends in Bellefont, so if we need grills, or awnings, I should be able to borrow them.
Let me know about the menu and I can help cook. I'm used to cooking for crowds, as I'm camp cook for about 20 people for our annual summer camping trip.
Looking forward to seeing y'all this summer!
**michelle the librarian**
I Am Used Vlad - Jan 22, 2005 9:24 am (#12 of 162)
I am going to make every effort to come. I like the idea of having it on the 30th better than the 23rd. The 23rd will be only just a few days from when we are allowed to post about HBP, and being away for a day/weekend would probably cause people to fall hundreds of posts behind.
Madam Pince - Jan 22, 2005 2:45 pm (#13 of 162)
Oh shoot. Mr. Pince and I would really love to come, but the 30th won't work for us because of a family reunion thingy. However, it sounds like it's better for everyone else, so we'll just wish you guys a good time and hope to see folks some other time maybe! If our reunion changes, we'll definitely be there!
I just wish Betty wouldn't have to do so much work with the food and all -- could people maybe bring stuff or something, or maybe just order pizzas or go out? I know, I know ... I'm not even going to be there, but I'm worried about Betty having to do too much.... I'm probably just being a worrywart... Wish I could help.... sighhhh...
***Madam Pince goes off to worry about overworking Betty...***
Marie E. - Jan 22, 2005 4:15 pm (#14 of 162)
If it is on the 30th, I'll definitely try to attend. Like I said in the chat thread, my brother and I have a reunion to attend the weekend of the 23rd, too. If it's on the 30th, count me as a yes!
_____________________________________
boop - Jan 22, 2005 4:47 pm (#15 of 162)
Marie, Yes I have the 30th of July the date of the gathering.
_____________________________________
Kip Carter - Jan 22, 2005 4:53 pm (#16 of 162)
boop, it appears that you have decided to use the date of July 30th. I will add that date to the title to avoid any further questions. If it will cover more days that just the 30th, please let me know.
_____________________________________
Julia. - Jan 22, 2005 6:52 pm (#17 of 162)
July 30 it is then. Betty, if there's anything I can do/bring, let me know. You did such a great job with the last one, but I want to help with this one!
MoaningMyrtle101 - Jan 22, 2005 10:39 pm (#18 of 162)
I really want to come, but my session at camp would clash with the 23rd and the 30th. I'm going to see if I can reschedule it at all and go earlier in the summer so I can make it to the Gathering. I'll try to be there, though, even if it means going to camp at the same time as my sister!
Saralinda Again - Jan 22, 2005 11:00 pm (#19 of 162)
Well, I'm not sure how I'll get there, but I've put it into my calendar. By then I should have a thousand questions about HBP. I'll talk to The Kid (some kid, he's 30 and the one who turned me on to HP) and see if he and his family are interested in joining in.
I'm already uber-excited about this next gathering! I can't believe I've already thought about what I'm going to pack!
I can't wait to meet some new people, and see everybody from the last gathering again... I really hope you can come Em!
Sarah, where on earth did you get a prefect badge?
I too am uber psyched about the impending gathering. Can we have cool T-shirts again? I still wear my one from the last gathering all the time. Can't wait to see you all!
BTW, JKR, if you're reading this, please stop by! We're having cake!
_____________________________________
Lady Kazuma - Jan 25, 2005 6:59 pm (#23 of 162)
Eh. In order to go, I'd have to get my mom to go camping up in Bellefont. In order to do that, I'll have to convince my aunt and uncle to come for their visit over that time (they always go camping with us). In order to do that, my aunt will have to get off jury duty for that week. I don't know how well this is going to work... Still, I'll write it down.
We need to have something on the West coast cause some of us over here can't afford to fly all the way to PA! Smile I vote for Southern Cali (but I'm biased).
I wish I could go to this one, but I'll be in training for work.
Birthday Cake
Fruit Salad
asst. of chips, and pretzels
If someone is interested in bringing one of these items, Please let me know.
If anyone is coming in Friday. We will meet at Wal-Mart parking lot. Then we will decide where everyone wants to eat. Then we can go see a movie or go bowling. Sat. evening we can go see a movie or go bowling.
I will have a list of hotels and motels coming soon.
It is great to see new forum members thinking of coming. Last year everyone who came had a great time. I am looking forward to meeting new people and see everyone from the first gathering.
I am also looking into having shirts made again.
I will have more information coming
Hugs Always
Boop(Betty)
PS Ydnam96 sorry you won't be able to come because of the cost. If you want a gathering in the west you need to start one up or see if you can get someone to host one. I live way too far to host a gathering in the west, but if you can get one organized I will offer my help from here in Pennsylvania.
_____________________________________
Julia. - Feb 1, 2005 8:23 pm (#30 of 162)
I'll bring the brownies. I know I've already requested, but can the burgers please be kosher?
_____________________________________
librarian314 - Feb 2, 2005 7:50 am (#31 of 162)
Hey all!
Count me in for some deviled eggs, the veggie platter, and home-grown tomatoes for the burgers.
If you need grills, let me know. I've got both a gas and a charcoal grill, and can put my hands on several others.
Do we need tables, plates, cups, plasticware, table cloths, napkins, etc.?
Do you mean the Wal-mart on Brenner Pike behind the Big Lots and Joanne's?
Can't wait to see y'all!
So is this just for people in your area? Where do you all live? Pennyslvania?(sp?) (I guess) If so, where in Penn? I live in South Carolina. Is this for the whole forum, or just people you guys know?
_____________________________________
mike miller - Feb 2, 2005 10:31 am (#34 of 162)
Thomas - Not to speak for Betty (*waves and hugs to Betty*) but the gathering is for anyone who's crazy about Harry Potter. I had only been on the Forum a short time before the get together last year and had a great time. There were people of all ages there. My only regret was only going up for the day and not spending more time. The venue is near State College, PA, roughly in the middle of the state (check for an earlier posting by Betty for more location details).
I would encourage all who can come to make plans to be there. I'm looking forward to discussing all of the new things we'll have learned from reading HBP!
Loopy Lupin - Feb 2, 2005 11:56 am (#35 of 162)
Julia. Out of curiosity, how are burgers made kosher? Sorry if that is a stupid question. Obviously I'm familiar with kosher hot dogs and the like. However, I have never noticed a package of ground beef that said "kosher" or had that kashroot symbol thingy. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.
_____________________________________
Catherine - Feb 2, 2005 11:58 am (#36 of 162)
I guess you could go to the Gathering and taste it for yourself, if they do kosher burgers!
Are you planning to go this year, Loopy Lupin?
_____________________________________
TomProffitt - Feb 2, 2005 2:38 pm (#37 of 162)
I'm tentatively planning on going and would appreciate a list of good hotels/motels. I'll bring my bowling ball (hasn't be used in a while). Yahoo! will give me directions if someone can post an address.
See y'all in July.
_____________________________________
Julia. - Feb 2, 2005 3:37 pm (#38 of 162)
Loopy, burgers are kosher if the meat is kosher. Basically this means that the cow has to be killed in a certain way and the meat has to be processed properly. And of course, no cheese on them.
Tom, Can't wait to meet you! For a good list of hotels check the thread from the first gathering. We'll all start posting where we're staying when it gets a bit closer to the gathering.
_____________________________________
Lady Kazuma - Feb 2, 2005 8:39 pm (#39 of 162)
Well, I managed to push the subject into conversation with my mom, and she gave me a "A-huh, okay." which means we'll talk about it later Sad So I still don't know. I'm trying to convince them of the camping idea, since I don't think my brother wants to take me again.
Turns out, he was a little freaked out by one of our more intense conversations last time, although over-all he had a good time. But... our car is still dented from last time, so I don't know if he'll want to come again.
I guess we'll see. He's the only member of my family who would actually attend the gathering with me, and my mom doesn't want me to go alone.
_____________________________________
Tomoé - Feb 3, 2005 7:52 pm (#40 of 162)
I hope you'll make it to the gathering Lady Kazuma!
I talked with Mireime, we'll bring the Birthday Cake, plus asst. of chips and pretzels (that's what we reckon will travel long distance best ^_~).
Hi! Everyone, I know I haven't been around for several months, but Betty being the sweetheart she is, emailed me about the gathering. I'm so excited! I am an absolute YES, I can't resist the chance of having people to discuss the book with in person. Now as for the rest of my family, I can't give a conclusive answer one way or the other yet.
Marie E., if you can come, will you be bringing your children?
_____________________________________
I am so excited that many of the people from the first gathering are coming. I am also happy that we will meet new members of Lexicon. I couldn't get the same pavilion, but we are in number 2 instead of number 1.
I will put up a listing of Hotels and Motels really soon.
I'm SO excited! I wish this wasn't so far away! I'm not sure what Brandon and I'll bring since everyone seems to have everything covered, I'm sure we'll think of something. What other activities can we do? I'm up for bowling... Is there anything else?
_____________________________________
boop - Feb 5, 2005 7:24 pm (#44 of 162)
Sarah there is a place with miniature golf. I am just glad that you and Brandon will be there. If I find more activities I will post them
_____________________________________
Marie E. - Feb 5, 2005 8:31 pm (#45 of 162)
Viola, I hadn't planned on bringing my kids as I have to fly to Penn. It's much cheaper for just me to fly. If we didn't have a family reunion the weekend before, I would just drive out with the kids. Maybe next time...
Speaking of next time, I am still planning on hosting a gathering June of 2006 here in Colorado Springs, CO. I am scouting locations around town and possibly a nearby town, Manitou Springs. When I have something more definite I will start of thread for it to keep everyone updated.
Bowling sounds fun. I used to be on a bowling league. Before any of you get scared, I was also known for having the highest handicap in the league. My average was only 105. For those of you non-bowlers, I've known six year olds who have bowled a 105.
_____________________________________
Pigwidgeon - Feb 6, 2005 10:08 am (#46 of 162)
Hee hee hee! Don't feel bad, Marie. I haven't bowled in more than 10 years. I would celebrate if I got 10 pins!
_____________________________________
Ydnam96 - Feb 6, 2005 10:09 am (#47 of 162)
Haha, Marie E. a 105 is way better than I bowl. I'm lucky if I break 90. Smile
If you do have a gathering in Colorado I might be able to come. I'm in LA and I think I can get cheap flights to Colorado. The drive would be quite a doozy but Colorado is much closer than PA.
_____________________________________
Lady Kazuma - Feb 6, 2005 9:33 pm (#48 of 162)
I get made fun of when I bowl. Not only do I not bowl well, but my wrists are super-weak, and can't hold up long while bowling. I end up switching back and forth between my right and left hand, and people always get really confused. Still, I love to watch, so, if I do end up going, I think that will be a great activity for us.
_____________________________________
scully jones - Feb 7, 2005 3:25 pm (#49 of 162)
I can never find a light enough bowling ball that my hands fit in. I usually end up getting one that my thumb gets stuck in half way through a swing and I end up lobbing the ball and having a sore thumb.... Maybe I'll get lucky this time...
_____________________________________
Tomoé - Feb 9, 2005 9:30 am (#50 of 162)
100 is pretty much my average as well, but I'll be delighted to bowl with you all.
For those who want to bring something but don't know what, there's still 5 items on the list:
- Hamburgers (cheese) [kosher meat if possible, please]
- Hot Dogs
- macaroni salad
- Toss Salad
- Fruit Salad
Julie Aronson - Feb 9, 2005 4:06 pm (#51 of 162)
Sadly, I will not be able to attend, but I do have a suggestion for the burgers: get some veggie ones. This way, any vegeterians that show up are covered, some people might like them for health reasons, and Julia, you won't be limited, then, with your sides. I know a lot of people put sour cream and/or cheese in their potato and pasta salads, and this will solve the mixing problem for you. Plus it leaves you totally open to all the desserts (I don't know how long you wait, if at all, between meat and dairy dishes).
If the grill is big enough, or if someone has another small one (better idea), the juices from the non-kosher meat can be kept separate.
This is just a route I have taken in the past. I used to get funny looks, but all my friends are used to my dietary traditions by now Wink
Have fun!
Julie
Veggie burger, excellent idea Julie. I'm sorry you can't come.
_____________________________________
Hmmm, usually I wait three hours. Veggie burger's don't sound like a bad idea, except I don't really like them!
_____________________________________
Tomoé - Feb 10, 2005 12:07 am (#54 of 162)
Now, it would be much easier if you would help us to help you (just kidding, I'm pretty picky myself ^_~).
Edit: Three hours? is there any ingredient I should avoid so we won't have to wait that long before sharing the cake?
_____________________________________
Julie Aronson - Feb 10, 2005 6:15 am (#55 of 162)
Julia,
I agree that some veggie burgers leave a lot to be desired, but I find that the Flame Grilled Boca Burgers are almost disturbingly meat-like (especially when you cook them with a bit of worcestershire sauce), and REALLY good.
Julie
_____________________________________
Julia. - Feb 10, 2005 10:00 am (#56 of 162)
Don't worry about it Tomoe. I'll figure out. There's nothing you should avoid. I wait three hours after eating meat before eating dairy, and I certainly wouldn't ask you to make the cake non-dairy just so that I won't have to wait three hours. Really, don't worry about it, I'll figure it out. Perhaps I'll even try veggie burgers.
_____________________________________
Marè - Feb 11, 2005 1:02 am (#57 of 162)
Perhaps I'll even try veggie burgers.
If you want to, I could check (when I get home in april) for receipes.
I have some not so hard, make yourself, taste much better than the storejunk, veggieburger receipes.
I'm not so sure in which box I put them, though...
_____________________________________
boop - Feb 11, 2005 4:20 pm (#58 of 162)
Marie that would be nice if you can find your recipes.
I am going to provide the meat, plates, napkins, soda and water and anything else on the menu that is left to make. So don't worry about the meat anymore. it is being taken care of.
Betty - Thanks for the info! You guys seemed to have so much fun last year, I'm planning to stay overnight. Are most of these hotels in State College as opposed to Bellfort (SP?)?
Can you let us know a rough agenda realizing that many activities have not been finalized?
I'm on the list for potato salad, is there anything else you need at this point?
Mike, The hotels are mostly in State College which about 10 miles from Bellefonte.
As for what are the plans we are going Bowling Saturday night and going out for dinner. I am not sure of the rest of the plans at this point. I can a sure everyone who comes will have a great time!!!!
Yay, pinata!!! Although it was kind of odd to hit Harry's head with a stick...
Oooooh, I hope I can come. I don't know if I'll be able to afford it, though. But I guess if Brandon and Sarah can get themselves out there, I can figure out a way to get myself to Pennsylvania.
Hopefully...
Have no fear you won't be smashing Harry this year!
I'm so thrilled to know it's only like 6 hours away from me! My kids and I will come! My husband may not, but who knows. I may not be able to bowl though, depends on how my therapy for my back goes.
So what are we doing for t-shirts?
Does Warner Bros. kibosh on Mare's design at the Accio Conference extend to more private affairs, like oh, say, Pennsylvania? I don't know exactly what their objection was (did it have to do with selling the shirts or something?) We wouldn't want to get her in trouble or anything, but maybe it's an idea?
Has anyone bought their tickets yet if you're traveling far? We need to really soon. Also, has anyone booked their hotels yet?
What really sucks is that the family reunion that we had on the weekend or two before it-that we asked to reschedule this gathering to the 31st instead- has been moved to the 31st.
Alas, relatives will have to wait Wink See you all at the gathering!
Hey Sarah!! Nothing official on my end yet, but my plan is pretty much the same as it was last time. Come in on Friday, leave on Sunday, and staying at the Leaky Cauldron.
No fun about your relatives. Glad you've got your priorities sorted!
Okay so is the park for the picnic/walmart/bowling alley in Bellefonte? Is there a buffet there too? That would help a bit with the food selection for friday night. I will drive up Friday and leave Saturday afternoon, I need to be back for Sunday morning.
Thora, The bowling alley we are going to serves food as well. I have not heard from anyone planning their hotel or flying plans either. We can go bowling both Friday night and Saturday, they also have pool tables.
hugs always
Sarah, I'm glad you have your priorities straight. Unfortunately for me, hubby doesn't. He really wants me to attend a massive family reunion in Minnesota that weekend. What is it with people, don't they know that is the weekend of Harry Potter's birthday and that they shouldn't schedule family reunions that weekend? Sorry for the rant, but I do feel better know. But I haven't given up hope on attending the HP gathering, yet! I don't want to imagine giving up a weekend of discussing the new HP book with people who care!!! Maybe after two weeks of trying to discuss it with him, he will gladly ship me off to the gathering. hehehe
Marie there is an airport in State College, and Harrisburg which is only one hour and half away. Pittsburgh is about 3 hours away from State College which is only 10 minutes from Bellefonte. Hope this helps Marie.
Thank you so much, Betty. I realized after I posted that this information is probably at the beginning of this thread and I shouldn't be so darn lazy! But you were sweet enough to repeat it all, so thanks again! Another development in the Gathering Fund: hubby was paying off my credit card and accidently overpaid them by $200. I batted my eyes and asked if this money could be used for my trip to PA. Shame on me, eh?
(Oh and I was listening to OotP last night and I kind of hope HBP doesn't present a good bad guy, the thought of smashing an Umbridge pinata is quite nice, wouldn't you agree?)
The Leaky Caludron is the place where a number of us stayed last year. It's called the Happy Valley Motor Inn. Phone number is 814-238-8416.
It's not the Ritz Carlton, but it's not a whole in the ground either. It's pretty cheap, so those of us on a student's budget aren't going broke over this.
Lupin is Lupin. Natch. - Apr 5, 2005 1:56 pm (#85 of 162)
I would also suggest, if a non-smoking room matters to you, you ask for it up front. When I stayed last year, I was told I got the last non-smoking room the motel had.
Have a great time everyone.
_____________________________________
Madam Pince - Apr 5, 2005 5:42 pm (#86 of 162)
We must've gotten there right after you, Kim -- we had asked for non-smoking when we booked reservations, but when we got there they said there were no more non-smoking rooms available. And I can tell you, the smell was pretty bad. We tried two different rooms and it was horrible in both. Actually I have found that to be the case with a lot of the older, "motel-style" properties -- they have been around so long and re-decorate so infrequently, that often the carpet and drapes have been around since the days when non-smoking rooms were non-existant, and the smoke smell can linger.
For what it's worth, overall we were pretty unhappy with The Happy Valley (aka Leaky Cauldron), but then again, we did arrive last and probably got the worst room (the smoke smell; it was downstairs right on the courtyard where a college fraternity reunion was taking place all night; the heat/a.c. unit was pretty loud; etc.) I don't mean to hack the place, and I can certainly understand saving some dollars, because I've definitely been there myself, but if you do have smoke allergies, or if you can spring for a more "name-brand" hotel, then you might be a little happier elsewhere. There are some other hotels that are a little closer to where the park is located, too. (The former travel-agent in me is coming out.....sorry!)
There is something to be said for camaraderie, though, too! And the staff was nice and the price was certainly right! Have fun, guys!
This is Brandon - I'm hijacking Sarah's name because mine seems to have been lost and my new one won't allow me to post...
Anyways, Sarah and I are going to be flying in on thursday and we're going to try to stay at the Leaky Cauldron as well. We didn't stay there last time though so we don't know what it's like. We stayed at the Hilton and let me say this - it's not worth it... It was very expensive and they don't give you enough to make it worth it. The so called on site gym is tiny and their continental breakfast is sooo small. I had a banana for breakfast out of their enormous selection of entree's... I don't mean to rip the Hilton too much, I'm sure some people love it. I just didn't think it was worth the money. So Sarah and I are going to try to stay at the Leaky cauldron, if we can get a non smoking room. That's a must for us!
-Brandon signing out-
Brandon, if you have a new sign-in name, you have to go through the same process that new members do. Go to the "Philosophy of this Forum" thread at the top of the forum. There is a post there with instructions on how to get moved from Read-only status to participant. The forum is set up so that all visitors are automatically put on Read-only and have to be manually converted to participant.
Thora - Apr 6, 2005 12:51 pm (#89 of 162)
Hmmm the smoke is kind of a big thing for me, allergies, babies, etc. Guess I'd better get calling. I know what Brandon means about the Hilton, I find one must pay a LOT of money to get anything besides a cookie cutter room and a bowl of cereal, never-the-less with 3 kids it's probably worth it for me, besides I plan to have a full trolley worth of fun stuff to bring.
So anyone who's been there, is there an nicer hotel that's close to the gathering place? I mean I know there's a list but without an address for the park I've no idea what'll be close...
Thanks,
Thora
Tomoé - Apr 6, 2005 11:34 pm (#90 of 162)
Anything in Bellefonte is close, but I don't think there's any hotel in Bellefonte itself, only Bed and Breakfasts. Something in State College maybe ...
My dad and I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express last year, and it wasn't so bad... I don't really remember what the breakfast buffet was like, I was so busy trying to guess if the girl at the next table was Julia or the woman across the room with two kids was Denise that I didn't notice very much what I was eating.
Emily. I did not have that problem, I knew full well that the women sitting across from me were April and Rach. I'm calling the Leaky Cauldron tomorrow to book my room (I feel like I should be owling, but unfortuinatly my owl is directionally challanged and I haven't seen her in about a year. I sent her off to find a park and she's never come back!). Betty, I found out tonight that I have a friend who'd really love to come with me. Is it ok if she comes along?
Do reservations go quickly? Should I be making plans now, as opposed to later? I had almost forgotten all about this, until I was reminded and asked about it. I should try and arrange some transportation/lodging. Any recommendations? I tend to not like places where I have to enter my room from the outside.
_____________________________________
Madam Pince - May 21, 2005 9:50 am (#102 of 162)
Penny, go back just a few posts in this thread and you'll see lots of impressions from last time. We made reservations at The Leaky Cauldron fairly late in the game, and while we they still had rooms, they did not have any non-smoking ones left. The Leaky Cauldron is a motel and so you enter your room directly from the outside (at least, all the rooms I saw worked that way.) The Hilton (where Brandon and Sarah stayed last time) has inside-access rooms, but as he mentions is a lot more expensive. I'm not sure how the Holiday Inn Express rooms are accessed. If you go to that site Boop provided (LionCountryLodgings or something?) you can go to each place's individual website and check it out, I think.
As for transportation, I think Julia took a train, and I Denise took a flight, so you might e-mail them about their arrangements.... We drove. Good luck making plans!
_____________________________________
Julia. - May 22, 2005 7:47 am (#103 of 162)
OK, here's the latest on my front. It looks like my friend Julie is definitely coming. (Yeah, I know, Julia and Julie. People call us by the wrong names all the time, bit annoying, really.) But the transportation thing is going to be kind of weird. We're coming in together on the train into Altoona where she'll rent a car. Then we'll drive together into State College for the weekend's festivities. However, we're leaving separately. She's going somewhere else afterwords, don't remember where at the moment, but whatever. So she'll take the car into Altoona and catch her train there. Betty has kindly agreed to give a ride into Harrisburgh Sunday morning so I can get my train home. (Yeah, I know it would make more sense to take the train home from Altoona with Julie, but the only train into New Haven that day gets in at 12:30 in the morning. I don't think my mum would like to meet me that late.) So, that's the latest on my end.
I'm so excited for this, I can't wait till July 29!!!!
So Betty, what exactly is the plan here? I know we're having the picnic lunch on Saturday (hopefully Pig, Hawk and I won't take two hours to find it this time). Are we going bowling Friday or Saturday night? Also, anyone have any thoughts on movies?
_____________________________________
boop - Jun 5, 2005 12:32 pm (#111 of 162)
Here is the update I promised:
Here is the list of food items, and who is bring what.
Hamburgers(cheese)- Betty
Hot dogs - Betty
Boca Burgers - Betty
Marcaroni Salad- ?
Potato Salad - Mike
Deviled eggs, Vegetable Platter - Librarian314(Michelle)
Toss Salad - ?
Fruit Salad- ?
Brownies - Julia
Birthday Cake - Elaine, Tomoe', Mireime
asst chips & pretzels - Tomoe' and Mireime
I will provide and item left on the menu, unless someone would like to add to the picnic. So ? items will be brought by Betty, unless otherwise told different.
There is plenty of activity for everyone, there is a playground, swimming pool, and 2 pinata's, coloring pages, puzzles, and plenty of talk about the new HBP book!!!
I have the drawings for the shirts now. April did a great job, they are so good. I have to take them to PAMP's and see how much each shirt will cost.
I would like to invite anyone who lives around the area to join us in a weekend of fun. Or just come for the day. If you don't know now, and decide you can make it on the weekend, just come. There will be plenty of food for everyone. So after you read the book and are dying to talk in person with fellow forum members you know where you can come.
As for Friday night we will be going to dinner. Then either to the movies or bowling. The same goes for Sat. evening as well. We can decide at the meeting place Friday evening at Wal-Mart by the Nittany Mall. The time for Friday evening is 6pm and the time for the picnic is 12 noon until ?????? I will be at the park well before noon, to get ready for everyone to come. I can give my cell number out to anyone coming so you can call if you need directions.
That's it for now. Have a great day!!!
Hugs Betty
Hey all!
Thanks boop! for posting this. I'd forgotten exactly what I had signed up for and this beats wading through the posts to double check!
The tomato plants for the burgers went into the ground yesterday. Hopefully we will have nice, organic, pesticide free, homegrown tomatoes for the burgers.
Also, add me for fruit salad. I'll bring a watermelon basket! They're fun to carve.
About how many people are we planning for, so I know how much to bring?
Can't wait 'til the picnic!
Y'all take care!
I'm so sorry, but I can't come anymore. The foreign exchange company says I only have two dates to leave for a month in the French Riviera: July 11th and June 26th. I had to pick July 11th because I have the lead in a play whose final performance is June 26th and I can't be at an airport in Washington, D.C. and be at the Clay Center being Alice at the same time. I hope all of you have a great time, and I'll definitely be there next year. Oh, and if anyone has any idea how I can get a copy of HBP in English on July 16th, let me know. I can't read French well enough, or I'd just buy one of those. I hope they sell British versions in Marsaille. I don't want to wait!
I'm afraid there will be no point to try to buy HbP's French version before December. ^_~
The Fnac will have the Bloomsbury's edition of HbP on July 16th (the Fnac is the French equivalent of Barnes&Noble), there a Fnac store in Marseille at the "Centre Bourse", but some smaller libraries could have copies too. Do you know where you will be on July 16th?
Too bad you won't be able to make it to the Pennsylvania's meeting. -_-
Well, tell Brandon that if anyone but him called me that I'd strangle them, so I guess I don't mind it so much either. I was looking forward to seeing everyone again. No, Betty, I still have to miss the Gathering. I was excited to be able to buy a British version of Half Blood Prince here in France and not have to wait for my parents to mail me a copy. My foreign exchange family said they would take me to the bookstore Tomoe mentioned so I could buy my book, but I still don't get back in time to make the Gathering.
Steve I will start making the food at 12:30, so anytime you can come after 11 am, so if you leave at 9 you will get to the park about the time the burgers, hotdogs and boca burgers.
I will be at the park around 9 to get everything done. So it doesn't matter what time after 9 anyone wants to come. But if you come before noon I might put you to work, hehehehe
We only have 10 days to go, I am checking into shirts.
hugs always
Betty .
Betty, when you are getting shirts, look for one for Jim with a picture of a Grim on it and the words "They're all gonna die!" He'd love it.
It's starting to look like I will be unable to meet up with you on Friday and will be coming just for Saturday, so please post where the picnic is so I can come. I will be bringing a Dementor pinata, like I said I would, and the lion head to wear when hitting it. I'm not sure if you'd like me to bring a barrel of butterbeer too, as I have the barrel from my party. I also have the Which Wizard and Name that Spell competition sheets if you'd be interested in doing them for a bit of sport. Just let me know.
Thora
PS There is no way I will fit the quidditch hoops in my car, sorry.
We'll be driving up Saturday morning and staying over until Sunday.
I think that I am signed up for chips/munchies. How many should I plan for? "10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or more"?
My wife was actually born in Bellefonte.
Anyone knowing the source of the above quotation is too old for words. Or, at least, as old as I am.
Weather Underground is predicting a high of 80 and Partly cloudy for Bellefonte on Saturday. Sounds pretty good to me.
Good!
I've got similar results from TheWeatherNetwork.com. They are predicting 84 for Williamsport and 77 for Altoona (so about 80 for Bellefonte which is in the middle), partly cloudy and 20% of possibility of precipitation.
One more day to finish packing our stuff and tomorrow at 5 AM Tomoé and me will be gone ^_^ .
I was about to ask whether the bloody red baron is an insight in to your character Steve, but TBE got there first......
Thanks to Betty for a great job of coordinating and flat-out hard work to make this year’s PA Gathering a great success. I had a great time seeing some of the same faces from last year and being able to meet some new people as well.
The food was great and the conversation enjoyable. Thanks to all who were able to attend and thanks again to Betty for her hard work.
TwinklingBlueEyes, I brought this up at the picnic and got nothing but stares. I guess I'm just older than the rest. Nobody had even heard of the Royal Guardsmen.
Good Evans, insight into my character? MMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Boop, many thanks for all of your work and hospitality. I, and my family, had a great time. Who knew I would get the high score bowling. I may be able to walk again by tomorrow.
Steve - I must have missed that part of the conversation; The Royal Guardsmen and their one big hit; The Bloody Red Baron. I know I had that on vinyl at one point.
Marie E. - Jul 31, 2005 9:11 pm (#159 of 162)
I must have missed it too, Steve. I know my mom had that record. I heard it many times while growing up.
Betty, thank you so much for all your hard work. You're going to be a hard act to follow, that's for sure. Next year the gathering will be here in my hometown, Colorado Springs, sometime in July. I will start a thread for it in a few months, try to get some dates nailed down that work for everyone.
Again, thank you, Betty. Your generosity and kindness are what made the weekend a success.
I guess that I asked at the wrong time.
I was told by several people that because of my avatar they thought that I was short and skinny. Strike 2!
Thanks for the pictures, Marie! It was so neat to see everyone and to put faces with names of those I hadn't already met! It looks like you had a great time, and Betty did another excellent job as hostess!
I would've sworn you had short hair, by the way. No idea why I thought that....
Marie E. - Aug 11, 2005 6:44 pm (#162 of 162)
Because the picture I used as an avatar many moons ago showed me with short hair. I heard that from someone else at the Gathering, so it's not just you. I had short hair for the first six months or so of this forum's existence then started growing it out. It's gotten so long now that it's on my nerves! Time for a haircut![/color]
