Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Sorcerer’s Stone) Trivia.

First, I must apologize for letting this trivia quiz languish so long. The month of September has been absolute chaos for me. I'm staying up late to get this done so this thread can move on!

* answers below *
Spoiler:

What is the name of the company Vernon Dursley works at?
Grunnings

What does this company make?
Drills

What floor was his office on?
Ninth (Actually, he had his back to the window so he didn't see the owls.)

What kind of hat does Dedalus Diggle wear?
Top hat

What color is it?
Violet (Sorry, I didn’t accept purple since Mona got it right).

Who are the members of Dudley’s Gang (what are their first names)?
Malcolm, Piers, Dennis and Gordon

What color was the writing in the icing on Harry’s 11th birthday cake?
Green

On Diagon Alley, what is the asking price for an ounce of Dragon liver?
17 sickles (Interesting comment from Odo on this subject!)

Why would one think the wording of the price is strange (mentioned 2 pages later)?
17 sickles = 1 Galleon

What is the last measurement Ollivander’s measuring tape took?
Between Harry’s nostrils

Which of the Weasley children was the first to talk to Harry?
George

In the sorting, who was the first Slytherin to be sorted?
Millicent Bulstrode (Half a point was granted for the last name for one person)

What was the first password mentioned for the Gryffindor common room?
Caput Draconis

What was the second password mentioned for the Gryffindor common room?
Pig Snout

How old was Nicholas Flamel?
665

How old was Perenelle Flamel?
658

How many of Draco is Neville worth?
12

What color are the wings on the key used to unlock the door into the chess chamber?
Bright blue

What chess piece was mentioned as the first casualty? (need color and piece)
Black knight

What did Quirrel do that almost all other wizards were afraid to do?
He spoke the name Voldemort (The inconsistency with Voldy's name in the series is one of my pet peeves. Why would Quirrell use his name with Voldy attached to the back of his head when all the death eaters are terrified to say his name?)

What flavor of Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean did Dumbledore come across as a youth that caused him to stop eating them?
Vomit

The winner is Solitaire! Great job!

My scoring follows:
Azi 7
Solitaire 16.5
Odo 13
Mona 9

Thanks, Betelgeuse! Ouch! Now I have to think up a quiz. It might be a couple of days, as I am staring at 43 essays which must be graded before I do anything else. But I'll be trying to put something together in my brain by midweek ... unless someone else is already armed with a quiz and wants to take this round.

Sounds good, Solitaire.

But if you need, I can whip up a quiz today, and post it tomorrow. Just let me know.

PAH, it would be great if you have time to do the quiz and are willing. I'm kind of buried right now (about 30 7th grade essays remaining and 40 6th grade ones headed my way on Thursday ), so I'm moving slowly.

Random Quotes Quiz - Who said it to whom and in which book?

Post  Potteraholic on Tue Sep 27, 2011 8:52 am

Random Quotes Quiz - Who said it to whom and in which book?

In this nice and easy quiz, each answer has 3 parts. Partial credit will be given, of course. The highest score you can earn in this 13 12 question quiz is 39 36, not including the BONUS Q. This quiz will be up for about 2 weeks, and will end on October 13th, a random, but lucky date!
As per Solitaire's request, I am going to extend the quiz ending date. It will now run through Sunday night, October 16th.

Example: "Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There's talent - and a nice thirst to prove yourself ..."
→ The Sorting Hat to Harry in PS/SS.

1. "... but then we were rudely interrupted by Severus Snape!"

2. "I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself," he said coolly."

3. "Some people got a D? Ha!"

4. "Zey are saying zat zis little boy is to compete also?"

5. "It is a beautiful and terrible thing and should therefore be treated with great caution."

6. The next password will be 'Mad-Eye'. Keep each other safe. Keep faith. Goodnight."

7. "You're young in years but the heart that beats beneath your bosom is as shrivelled as an old maid's, your soul as dry as the pages of the books to which you so desperately cleave."

8. "It unscrews the other way."

9. "Make way for the Heir of Slytherin, seriously evil wizard coming through..."

10. "....and she's seeing someone. Jealous type. Big bloke. You wouldn't want to cross him."

11. "I mean he's sensitive, people bully him, too, and he feels lonely and hasn't got anybody to talk to, and he's not afraid to show his feelings and cry!"

12. "Goblins aren't exactly fluffy little bunnies, though, are they?"

BONUS Q: What do all these quotes have in common?

EDIT: There are only 12 Qs, since I repeated a quote. Thanks for your email, Solitaire. Trying to multitask, on the Pottermore site!

Thanks for the sentiment, Solitaire. Am here now, actually, b/c Pottermore is having a temporary busy signal. I should be able to pop back on soon!

Post  Betelgeuse Black on Tue Sep 27, 2011 10:58 pm

I was going to wait on this to see if I could figure out the bonus but alas, earwax.

You know from some of the goofs and misses I make that it isn't always easy to concentrate, even when we enjoy what we are doing.
Since I'm the king of goofing up on the forum, I can understand how it happens. In fact, I'm relieved that it does happen to others occasionally (although much less often than with me. )

Spoiler:

1. Professor Trelawney to Harry Potter when talking about her interview with APWB Dumbledore at the Hog’s Head, HBP.
2. Harry Potter to Draco Malfoy prior to the sorting, SS/PS.
3. Draco Malfoy to the Potions class in general after Professor Snape mentioned that some dunces got D’s on their essays, OotP
4. Fleur Delacour to Madam Maxime after Harry’s name came out of the Goblet of Fire, GoF.
5. Dumbledore to Harry Potter when talking about the truth after Harry wakes up in the hospital wing, PS/SS
6. You accidentally answered this one yourself! “Lee 'River' Jordan to the Potterwatch listening audience in DH.”
7. Same as #1. Professor Trelawney to Harry Potter when talking about her interview with Dumbledore at the Hog’s Head, HBP.
8. Professor Trelawney to Hermione in Divination class. It was the last straw that caused Hermione to drop the subject, PoA.
9. Minerva McGonnagall to Peeves about loosening the screws on a chandelier at Hogwarts in OotP.
10. The Weasley twins to schoolmates in the hallway, making fun of Harry being called the Heir of Slytherin, CoS.
11. Harry to Viktor Krum at Fleur and Bill’s wedding (about Ginny), DH.
12. Moaning Myrtle to Harry and Ron in the boys bathroom (talking about Draco Malfoy), HBP
13. Ron to Hermione and Harry after talking with Griphook about the sword of Gryffindor in DH.

Bonus: They are all in a Harry Potter book?

Ahhh, BB, you must have copied and saved the original posting of this quiz (before I made the correction/revision): the one that had the same quote listed in 2 different questions and the answer given for #6! You must've had some Felix felicis today.

Thanks for your answers... the one I'm thinking of for the bonus Q is a bit more unexpected than that.

Re: HP Related Trivia (Vol. III)

Post  azi on Wed Sep 28, 2011 7:54 pm

Currently suffering a slight bout of sleeplessness...which will be my excuse for the bad score I inevitably get.
Spoiler:

1. Sybil Trelawney to Harry Potter, HBP
2. Harry Potter to Draco Malfoy, PS
3. Draco Malfoy, during one of Snape's Potions classes (I guess to the class at large), OotP
4. Fleur Delacour to Madame Maxime, GoF
5. Albus Dumbledore to Harry Potter, guessing OotP...
6. Lee Jordan to listeners of the anti-Voldemort radio show (in this case Harry, Ron and Hermione), DH
7. I don't recognise this from the 7 books, so I'd have to guess Beedle the Bard (I've never read it!)
8. Minerva McGonagall to Peeves, OotP
9. Er, guess Fred Weasley out of the two, said to Hogwarts students as Harry was walking down the corridor, CoS
10. Harry Potter, disguised as a Weasley, to Victor Krum, DH
11. Moaning Myrtle to Harry Potter, HBP
12. Guessing Ron Weasley to Harry Potter, DH

BONUS Q: No idea! I'd have guessed that they all involved Harry in some way, but Q7 throws a spanner into those works...

BB and azi, I may need to do this when I reveal the answer to the BONUS Q. I suppose it's a bit esoteric an answer, but who knows... someone might just be able to figure it out!

Merlin's saggy shorts! I copied the quiz and filled in all the answers....and then found I don't recall how to make a spoiler box! So I deleted my post --after saving my answers to a word document. Can someone remind me how to make a spoiler box....and explain why it isn't a choice on the toolbar? Thanks!

Re: HP Related Trivia (Vol. III)

Okay, here we go!

Spoiler:
1. Trelawney to Harry in HPB. I think it's in a corridor coming from DD's office, and she is ticked because doesn't have time to see her (because he is getting ready to work with Harry).

2. Harry to Draco on the Hogwarts Express, after Draco has insulted Ron ... PS/SS.

3. Draco is making a smart remark to anyone who will listen (?) in a Potions class ... no idea which book.

4. Fleur to Madame Maxime in GoF, after Harry has been called out as the 4th champion to compete in the Triwizard Contest.

5. DD to Harry in this hospital wing--PS/SS--following his encounter with Quirrell.

6. Lee Jordan to listeners of Potterwatch in DH, as are listening to the Deluminator.

7. Trelawney to in Divination, just before Hermione walks out of class. Trelawney has just seen the Grim in Harry's teacup, and Herm makes an exasperated comment like "not that stupid Grim again," or something similar. PoA

8. McGonagall encouraging Peeves in OP, regarding the chandelier he is trying to unscrew. This is following departure from Hogwarts, and everyone is pretty much trying to make Umbridge's life miserable.

9. I think this is Fred ... saying it to all in the vicinity as Harry walks down the corridor in Chamber of Secrets.

10. Harry to Krum (regarding Ginny) at Bill and Fleur's wedding in DH.

11. Moaning Myrtle to Harry (about Draco) in HBP ... just before Harry performs the Sectumsempra curse on Draco.

12. Ron to Harry (about Griphook) in DH ... at Shell Cottage, perhaps?

Bonus: The only thing I can think of that they have in common is that is present at all of them ... either making them or overhearing them.

My answer sheet for the trivia questions was on the laptop I spilled some green tea on. I am picking up the laptop today and am hoping my documents are all intact, so that I can post the results of this quiz soon. If not, I will tackle it later. Thanks for your patience.
