Archive of Riddles

Post  Potteraholic on Wed Apr 13, 2011 6:46 pm

This is a work-in-progress. As it is an archive, and not a discussion thread, it will be a locked topic.

  • HP Riddles Archive •
This topic serves as an archives of the riddles played on the 'Potty Games' and 'Potty Games : Riddles only' threads from the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum as hosted on World Crossing which ceased operation on April 15, 2011. This Archive of Riddles was reposted from May 3, 2011 to June 8, 2011. None of the original emoticons, font styles, or colors were archived. Any emoticons that appear are those that converted easily to BBCode, like : ) or ; ) to create Smile or Wink. Hopefully, the absence of the original emoticons does not affect a reader's understanding of the riddles. ~ Potteraholic, June 8, 2011
These riddles originated in a thread over on World Crossing called 'Potty HQ' From what I can tell, this thread was a place where Harry Potter Lexicon members could play HP-inspired games like Hangman and become a member of Potty HQ (the 'Potties') by sending in a cyber payment of a certain number of knuts or sickles. I may be wrong about the specific details, as I was not posting on the Forum at that time. For more info., please read this post.

A huge THANK YOU to Mona for archiving these riddles and their answers to transfer them over from World Crossing to our new home here on forumotion. As much as I wanted this archive to make it over here, intact, from our previous home, I didn't have the time to do the actual copying and pasting myself with the other threads I was archiving at the time. When these riddles and their answers were safely archived somewhere, thanks to Mona's efforts, I didn't need to feel so anxious about not having enough time to get to them, before World Crossing closed on April 15, 2011. So now, they are all formatted and reposted here. These archives would not be possible without your help, Mona! Smile

Here are the first HP Lexicon Riddles ever posted!

Elanor - Mar 1, 2006 12:39 pm (#17 of 2987)

I have thought I should post a new riddle today, in honour of the new thread. I didn't have much time for thinking of it, so it will be a very easy one! Actually, technically, it is not really a riddle, but more a potion recipe...

Harmony potion

1 - In a cauldron, first put some solidified water.

2 - Then add the remains of a comet, some shining stardust and a bird's heart.

3 - Stir till the potion boils.

4 - Let it bubble gently and with care.

5 - This potion has to be served warm.

Who's the "potion maker" who invented it?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Elanor - Mar 4, 2006 10:33 pm (#131 of 2987)

Congratulations Lizzy, it was Celestina Warbeck indeed!

Here are some explanations about the clues:

"Harmony potion": harmony was in fact referring to music here.

"In a cauldron": for the reasons you mentioned Lizzy.

"first put some solidified water": ok, this was a very, very bad pun. The Lexicon says she "recently recorded a version of the Puddlemere United team anthem", so it was a pun about "puddle" and the fact the team is "united" and quite "solid" for a puddle. (Please don't hit me, Marè! )

"add the remains of a comet": one of her concerts in Liverpool was the occasion for a "broom smash" and the remains of brooms (one of them was a "Comet") were found afterwards in the river.

"some shining stardust": she is a "star" in the Wizarding World and the root of her name "celest" means "sky".

"a bird's heart", because of birds singing.

"Stir till the potion boils. 4 - Let it bubble gently and with care. 5 - This potion has to be served warm.", because of her song "A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love" and of Molly remembering Arthur that they danced on her songs when then were young: she was -and still is- part of their "love potion" finally!

Congratulations again Lizzy! Your turn!

dizzy lizzy - Mar 10, 2006 2:08 pm (#157 of 2987)

OK here goes

A letter that can rotate to form another is my first letter,
I am seen only when my team is flying...
I can be fast and disorientating to see,
So what do you think I might be?

Lizzy

Spoiler:
dizzy lizzy - Mar 11, 2006 1:08 pm (#170 of 2987)

Good Evans you are correct! It is a Woollongong Shimmy!

"Perfected by the Australian Woollongong Warriors, this is a high- speed zig-zagging movement intendend to throw off opposing chasers." (Quidditch through the ages)

The explanation is as follows:

A letter that can rotate to form another is my first letter.
As Elanor correctly pointed out, W and M rotate to form each other, I was looking for the W in this case.

I am seen only when my team is playing.
A hint that it is related to the playing of quidditch and also that the move is the domain of a certain team.

I can be fast and disorientating to see.
Literally from the description...High-speed zig-zagging movement...I think it would be dizzying to see done in real life for everyone concerned.

The last line just ties the riddle up.

Congratulations Good Evans. I'm glad your linking practice went well!

Lizzy

Good Evans - Mar 11, 2006 1:10 pm (#171 of 2987)

yay - thanks Lizzy, that was a good one - Ok - I will put my thinking cap on and see what I can come up with

edit

this is logical - but does not follow the same pattern throughout so don’t be fooled!! it should be quite simple though;

My first is in snow but never in rain
My second in ornate, although some think me plain
My third is found within
And my next that word does begin
My fifth looks like a roman one
and my sixth would end the setting sun
My final an exclamation is a clue
so put me together, add another word and are you able to choose?

Who am I?

Good Evans - Mar 13, 2006 12:17 am (#203 of 2987)

Well done Lina, you are correct, the riddle was the Sorting Hat - let me explain...

My first is in snow but never in rain - S (obvious in the spelling of snow but not rain)

My second in ornate, although some think me plain O(again is in the spelling of Ornate, and a little clue to the plainness of the hat)

My third is found within R (ok this was a bit tricky, within "third" is an R - yes alright!!)

And my next that word does begin T (Third, begins with a T)

My fifth looks like a roman one I (roman numeral one is I)

and my sixth would end the setting sun N (again obvious and it rhymed!)

My final an exclamation is a clue G (Gee!)

so put me together, add another word and are you able to choose?

SORTING add another word - and you get sorting hat who of course chooses the houses that the new students enter.

Well done Lina - over to you.....

Lina - Mar 13, 2006 3:59 pm (#212 of 2987)

*****Happy dancing******* first! I guessed the riddle! As I mentioned in the chat room, when I get the first letter of a puzzle, I find it much more easy to find the answer in the Lexicon.

I admit that Julie's riddle reminded me of the Sphinx' riddle from GoF so I decided to do something similar. Not letter by letter like Julie did, just more in a way that the Sphinx did... So here, I'm starting with the clues already...

The male pronoun is the beginning,
Too easy, I know, but I'm bad in singing.
Now think of a female, wearing white gown,
Happy to join the love of her own.
Than add the article you use to mention
One of the many and nothing special
Let a vowel be the start of that one
And with the first part of my name you are done.
The second part of my name I share
With a family that seems it has always been there
Noble and pure, is that an illusion,
Or are we related, you make your conclusion.

There. Of course I think it is an easy one and I'd almost bet that it will be guessed until I wake up in the morning. I know the rhymes sound as if a Croatian made them , I just hope I haven't messed with the language so much that the riddle would become unsolvable...

Oh, Finn, I always go to the Lexicon to look up for possible guesses, I thought that was the point of the game. Wasn't it?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Lina - Mar 13, 2006 10:07 pm (#221 of 2987)

You see? Exactly as I said! You got it correctly Kathy!

And needs a short explanation:

The male pronoun is the beginning,
Too easy, I know, but I'm bad in singing. ------------> He
Now think of a female, wearing white gown,
Happy to join the love of her own. ----------> bride
Than add the article you use to mention
One of the many and nothing special
Let a vowel be the start of that one
And with the first part of my name you are done. ----------> an
The second part of my name I share
With a family that seems it has always been there
Noble and pure, is that an illusion,
Or are we related, you make your conclusion.------------> Black

Butterbeer for you, Kathy, to help you think of the next riddle.

Puck - Mar 14, 2006 6:45 am (#224 of 2987)

Thanks Lina! I actually got the whole thing from your clues, only used the Lex to double check the answer I came up with was real.

Finn, I admit I did look at the Lexicon for yours, and still didn't find the answer!

Okay, so I owe you all a riddle. This is a first attempt for me, so sorry if it's a bit cheesy.

At the start you may find me bad
(and I admit at times I make young Potter sad.)
But you'll sing a new tune if you'll follow mi.
(Come over and visit, though I'll offer no tea.)
My next letter holds the same position in kneazle.
Now, think of a club that welcomes in weasels.
My second name's more fun than a jump or a skip.
If I was more enterprising I'd captain the ship.
Put it together and find me right fast.
This riddle is done, so off to your task!

Okay, the kiddies are in bed, so know I can explain the riddle!

At the start you may find me bad ---Mal translates as bad

(and I admit at times I make young Potter sad.) ---she sends out letters concerning underage magic

But you'll sing a new tune if you'll follow mi. ---"Fa" follows Mi in the song from "Sound of Music" (a clue for Finn)!

(Come over and visit, though I'll offer no tea.) ---I needed a rhyme, and there are no "Ts in the name, plus Ti is also part of aforementioned song.

My next letter holds the same position in kneazle. --The 6th letter is "L"

Now, think of a club that welcomes in weasels. ---The "DA"

My second name's more fun than a jump or a skip. ---a "Hop", skip and a jump

If I was more enterprising I'd captain the ship. Capt. "Kirk" from Star Trek (I married a Sci-Fi geek, and he's rubbed off on me)

Good Luck and have fun Mrs. Brisbee!

Mrs Brisbee - Mar 15, 2006 3:28 am (#234 of 2987)

Now I can't remember what it was in the book. I spelled it (backwards from Kirk) following the clues. Very clever riddle, Puck.

Okay, here's mine. And no one need worry: I'm not going to give up my day job to become a poet

At the apex few are known (though others might have been around).
Two can be found in the roots of the ground.
Two more are shown: One unnamed, one renowned.
And once the present has flown, one more will likely be crowned.

Who are they?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Mrs Brisbee - Mar 17, 2006 4:51 pm (#309 of 2987)

And Marè is the winner!

The correct answer is indeed the Headmistresses of Hogwarts.

I'll break the riddle down:

At the apex few are known-- the "apex" being the headmaster position, and only four female ones have been mentioned that I know about-- (though others might have been around). --Hogwarts has been around a thousand years, and we in no way have a complete list of all former Heads, so there may well be more we don't know about.

Two can be found in the roots of the ground.-- The "roots" being the founding of Hogwarts, and the "ground" being the grounds of Hogwarts. There were four founders, but we only need two for this riddle: Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw.

Two more are shown:-- Of the portraits described in the Headmasters office, two are of former Headmistresses-- One unnamed,-- that's the gimlet eyed witch-- one renowned. --The renowned one is Dilys Derwent.

And once the present has flown, one more will likely be crowned.-- McGonagall is deputy Headmistress, and now that Dumbledore is gone, she will likely be confirmed Headmistress in the near future.

Who are they? --The Headmistresses of Hogwarts.

Whew!

Congratulations, Marè. The next riddle is yours.

Marè - Mar 21, 2006 8:42 am (#366 of 2987)

Okay riddle time, I don't think this one is very hard

To change the sight from one to many,
Used in good or deeds of villainy.
Take wee little critters, winged and scary,
Boil and steam them, seven times three.
Then add the slimy creep with an affinity for blood,
and the crushed dual horned whom eats flesh for food.
Follow grass that is tied,
and weed found when the werewolves stride.
Hide of the Tree snake,
And an icky little flake.
Add it all,
Let it boil,
And see the hour unroll.

Good luck!

Ok, here is the (easy) riddle!

From the place of the Acropolis I come,
Fear of me will make you go numb!
For instant death I bring,
And when devouring you I softly sing.
Three parts to me you will find,
Two of creature, one of mankind.
So what am I, don't dawdle about,
For I can repel most of what you spell out!

azi - Mar 21, 2006 1:51 pm (#382 of 2987)

Yey, go Finn! It is indeed a Manticore.

My reasoning -

From the place of the Acropolis I come, ...the Acropolis is found in Greece, and the Manticore is a Greek monster.

Fear of me will make you go numb! ...the annoying niggling line I don't like. I did originally have 'To approach me you must be pretty dumb!' The Manticore is scary!

For instant death I bring, ...when the manticore stings you, you die instantly.

And when devouring you I softly sing. ...it croons when eating you.

Three parts to me you will find,
Two of creature, one of mankind.
...the head of a man, body of a lion, tail of a scorpion.

So what am I, don't dawdle about,
For I can repel most of what you spell out!.
..it's skin repels most known charms!

Take it away Finn!

Finn BV - Mar 21, 2006 2:08 pm (#385 of 2987)

Ooh, yay, it's been ages since I've gotten a riddle! off to think one up…

EDIT. Okay, I think this should be good.

I could be relied on until Voldemort came back,
Then all of a sudden, I lost my once-known knack.
Now Harry Potter and I are on different terms,
As Rita Skeeter so easily confirms.

Who or what am I?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Finn BV - Mar 21, 2006 4:36 pm (#396 of 2987)

Mrs Brisbee has it! It is The Daily Prophet!

Reasoning...

I could be relied on until Voldemort came back, In OoP the DP publishes falsehoods about Harry and Dumbledore and the Return of Voldemort.

Then all of a sudden, I lost my once-known knack. It used to be reliable, but, then it lost its credibility.

Now Harry Potter and I are on different terms, Again, obvious. Doesn't believe Harry.

As Rita Skeeter so easily confirms. Rita writes for the paper and she publishes lies about Harry.

Who or what am I? Important because all of you thought it was a who!

Good job, Mrs Brisbee, take it away!!

Mrs Brisbee - Mar 21, 2006 5:09 pm (#398 of 2987)

Nice riddle, Finn. And here's mine.

I am a place of revelations.
Four in the afternoon, in cold and iron.
Five after midnight, when fire is brought to join the air, water, and earth in the night.
Three in the morning, and all calm and bright.

Where am I?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Mrs Brisbee - Mar 22, 2006 1:30 pm (#415 of 2987)

Esther Rose has the riddle, the answer is the shack on the rock out to sea!

I am a place of revelations. Much is revealed there by Hagrid. Harry learns what is in the letter, that there is a magic school called Hogwarts, that he is a wizard, that his parents were magical, that they were actually murdered by Lord Voldemort, etc., etc.

Four in the afternoon, in cold and iron. Four people go out to the rock in late afternoon. The setting is described as cold and iron-grey.

Five after midnight, when fire is brought to join the air, water, and earth in the night. Hagrid shows up at midnight, so thereafter there are five people on the island. Vernon hadn't been able to light a fire earlier, but shortly after he comes Hagrid lights a fire (fire), storm and wind surround them (air), they are out to sea (water), and in the shack on the rock (earth).

Three in the morning, and all calm and bright. Hagrid and Harry leave the three Dursleys behind on the island in the morning. The storm is over, and the sun is out.

Great job, Esther Rose. The next riddle is yours!

Here is my riddle:

Awake, awake, though it appears
That no one is home, probity arrears.
Diffidence arrested, so very sad.
No recollection of what could have been had.
Who am I?

If you know the definitions of some of these words, then it should be fairly obvious.

Finn, you have got it!

Awake, awake, though it appears
That no one is home, (not a bright fellow, missing a few of the finer points in life)
probity in arrears (certainly not a man of integrity or honesty)
Diffidence arrested (not reserved or modest, to say the least), so very sad.
No recollection of what could have been had. (This is the part I thought was such a giveaway - he lost his memory, hence 'no recollection' and of course, never saw his mistakes.)

Who am I? Gilderoy Lockhart

Don't know why, but I had a feeling you were going to be the one to guess it, Finn BV. Your turn!

Okay, here's the riddle.

My first is in Bard, but not in play,
My second is in death, and also decay.
My third is in scam, but not in fraud,
My fourth is in wide, but not in broad.
My fifth is in knot, but not in tie,
My sixth is in what, but not in why.
My seventh in broke, and also in money,
My last is in rain, but not in sunny.
Together you have a person or creature
That makes one lose their living feature.

Finn BV - Mar 24, 2006 7:00 pm (#480 of 2987)

Yes it is Kathy. An easy one, I knew when I made it. I was too bored to write something really fun.

Explanation...

My first is in Bard, but not in play, (D)
My second is in death, and also decay. (E)
My third is in scam, but not in fraud, (M)
My fourth is in wide, but not in broad. (E)
My fifth is in knot, but not in tie, (N)
My sixth is in what, but not in why. (T)
My seventh in broke, and also in money, (O)
My last is in rain, but not in sunny. (R)
Together you have a person or creature
That makes one lose their living feature. (A Dementor sucks out your soul, of the feature of you that allows you to live.)

Thanks, Finn!

Okay, here's the new riddle!

First, but not least
Mightier than beast
Binds together
After pushing apart
Enchanting in flight
From the very start

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Puck - Mar 26, 2006 12:07 pm (#529 of 2987)

Yay, Lina! You are correct, it is "Wingardium Leviosa"!

Here is the explanation:

First, but not least - first charm we see students learn
Mightier than beast - it was used to defeat the troll
Binds together - the defeat of said troll united our trio
After pushing apart - Hermione's attitude during the class where they learned the spell, and Ron's comments after caused a huge rift between them.
Enchanting in flight - enchant=charm, which makes things "fly"
From the very start - from SS/PS

Funny, because after I wrote it I kept thing of the 1st Task of the Triwizard Tournament (1st task, defeating a dragon, Harry & Ron's fight), so I was surprised no one guessed that.

Take it away, Lina!

Esther Rose - Mar 27, 2006 7:35 pm (#576 of 2987)

Here is my riddle. This is an easy one. But you have to think about it. Maybe.

On the cover and in each book.
I maybe often over looked.
I keep my shape, but do change colors,
to differ from my closest brothers.
Perhaps I'm here in all my glory
to see four sides to every story.
North, South, East, and West,

What am I? Take your guess.

Great Job Haymoni!!!!!!! Thank goodness. (I was afraid I would need to forfeit the riddle.)

Yes, diamonds are the answer.

I apologize to everyone, but the one way I can spot my coveted HP books (even from the other side of the room) are from the diamonds that are on them. They are on the spine of the Paperbacks and on the cardboard of the hard covers. Also, all over the title pages. Going through the riddle.

Though I am within each book.
I maybe often over looked.
Title pages are often overlooked. And the diamonds on the spine can sometimes be missed.
I keep my shape, but do change colors,
to differ from my closest brothers.
The key word here is shape. Also, diamond patterns on the title pages are gray and white.
And each diamond is a different color from its adjacent diamonds.
Perhaps I'm here in all my glory
to see four sides to every story.
The key words here are four sides.
North, South, East, and West,

What am I? Take your guess.

Diamonds are four sided and have 4 points very similar visually to a compass.

And I promise from now on I will make easier puzzles. So sorry to put you all through that.

Great Job Haymoni!
