Phelim Mcintyre - Jul 3, 2006 12:41 am (#2886 of 2987)

Okay. First a riddle

Twelve, One, Nine

Have fun!

Spoiler:
Phelim Mcintyre - Jul 6, 2006 12:01 am (#2929 of 2987)

Congratulations The One! You're the closest so you can have the pleasure of solving the riddle.

The answer is timepieces (clocks and watches). The twelves refer (as so many of you guessed) to Dumbledore's watch, I almost added a second twelve for Ron's watch.

The nine is one of the two Weasley clocks, the one with a hand for each family member. The one refers to the other Weasley clock that has one hand and words such as "time to feed the chickens".

The One - Jul 6, 2006 4:51 am (#2932 of 2987)

My riddle.

My first one, but I hope this will work:
I create changes.
But if I do, there will be nothing to change.
So perhaps I don't?
Hard to tell, really.

Okay folks, the riddle as promised.

Don’t be rude, and don’t be snide.
After all I’m on your side.
After suffering true frustration
I am spoken at dawn of revelation.
I am useful I’ll have you know
I help make the green grass grow.
For your plans to come to fruition
I set the needed variable conditions.
So, don’t be rude and don’t be snide,

Can you guess who am I?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Esther Rose - Jul 14, 2006 10:37 am (#134 of 2990)

Puck! You are Potty Puzzle Queen of The Day.

I hope you reserved some of your wisdom for the next puzzle.

The answer is Hippogriff

Don’t be rude, and don’t be snide. Never insult a hippogriff
After all I’m on your side. Hip. Your hips are on your sides.
After suffering true frustration I am spoken at dawn of revelation. O as in OH!
I am useful I’ll have you know I help make the green grass grow. GR There is a "gr" in green, grass, and grow.
For your plans to come to fruition I set the needed variable conditions. If you want a plan to workout the word if sets the conditions. As in "If it doesn't rain today, I can go to the beach."
So, don’t be rude and don’t be snide,
But can you guess who am I?

Phew! I was hoping not to have to continue this puzzle for another weekend!

Okay, a new riddle. Let's try this...

Be you bawdy or be you shy,
From my perch I will descry.
Although I may make you leery,
I hold the answer to your query.

Spoiler:
Puck - Jul 15, 2006 5:23 pm (#176 of 2990)

Ah, once again the long shot pays off! It is indeed the mermaid painting in the Prefects' bathroom! Great job, Smurf! (You do know this means you get to write the next riddle?)

Be you bawdy or be you shy,
From my perch I will descry.

Harry wasn't too keen on being watched while bathing, as I suspect most would be.

Although I may make you leery,
I hold the answer to your query.

The sight of the mermaid is what helped Harry to figure out the egg clue.

Ah, you've got it Finn.

My essence is mostly evil - refers to the prisoners inside ('mostly' evil because sometimes they are innocent - Hagrid, Sirius)
But my body is very plain - it's made of plain stone
Half of me wants to stop hurting - the prisoners
While the other half feeds on my pain - the Dementors

Finn BV - Jul 16, 2006 7:33 pm (#201 of 2990)

I must thank The One for putting me on the right track, though. Great riddle, smurf!

Hmm, let me think of a riddle tonight and I'll post it tomorrow - but do forgive me if I don't get around to it until around 2:30 pm Forum time or so - I haven't forgotten! (Hopefully, inspiration will immediately come and I'll post it tonight before I doze off!)

EDIT: Wow, I just realized how painfully bad my riddle-writing is, so here's a shot at a pretty easy one, I guess:

A flower I may be,
But one without baby.
Nor am I a teacher,
A student, a creature.
I'm the only other one.
Now don't be outdone.

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Finn BV - Jul 17, 2006 9:08 am (#211 of 2990)

It's not Lily or Myrtle (one had a baby and the other is a student). I should have known I would be outsmarted, however. Catherine guessed Lycoris Black and Lycoris is a flower, and so I suppose I must accept it, as she is not a mother, teacher, nor student. However, I was, when I wrote the riddle, going for Violet, the Fat Lady's friend.

You all seemed to have the right idea to the riddle: by eliminating parents, teachers, and students, that got rid of Petunia, Narcissa, Myrtle (she was a student when she died), Lily, Lavender, Poppy [Pomfrey], Lupin (apparently a type of flower), and Pansy, and that left Violet. Of course I completely missed Lyrcoris.

So, I suppose Catherine wins on my haste… I did say I couldn't write riddles!! Oh, well. Your go, Catherine!

Goodness! I had NO idea I would be given the next riddle. Had to dash one off quickly.

Finn, I feel like I cheated you. You were within your rights to tell me I didn't get the answer you were looking for; it's your riddle, after all!

As a lot of time has passed, I'll throw this one out. Thanks for the patience, everyone.

Perhaps a riddle, somewhat gaunt;
Hissy fits to get what you want.
Not all do slither in;
Many, though, are blood kin.
Seen as dark but could be fair,
Always find it really rare.

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Catherine - Jul 18, 2006 6:53 am (#226 of 2990)

Azi does have the answer of Parseltongue

Perhaps a riddle, somewhat gaunt - A play on the names Riddle and Gaunt and their ancestors and descendants.
Hissy fits to get what you want. Parseltongue sounds like hissing - Also a play on the "hissy hissy" rhyme from HBP.
Not all do slither in - Not everyone who speaks snake language is a snake; also a play on the name Slytherin.
Many, though, are blood kin. - The Gaunts are proud of their blood tie to Salazar Slytherin
Seen as dark but could be fair - Not all wizards who speak Parseltongue are Dark Wizards. Also, the Lex lists "Herpo the Foul" as a known Parseltongue; perhaps not everyone is "foul" but instead "fair."
Always find it really rare. - Parseltongue is a rare gift.

So, Azi, the riddle is yours!

azi - Jul 18, 2006 10:49 am (#228 of 2990)

Oh my! I will go write a riddle. Thank you Catherine!

Ok, here is a fairly bad, but short, riddle.

Trio, Tradition
Cheating, Companionship
Danger, Death

What I am?

* answers below *
Spoiler:
azi - Jul 19, 2006 2:38 am (#234 of 2990)

The One is correct! Good thing as well, I'd forgotten what it was myself. Explanation follows...

Trio, Tradition Three champions (generally), a traditional competition for (I think) 700 years.

Cheating, Companionship Cheating in the tournament is traditional, and the point is that young witches and wizards meet new people and form international friendships.

Danger, Death Very dangerous (dragon's etc.), the tournament was stopped after the death toll rose too high and Cedric Diggory was the latest victim (albeit not the Tournament's fault).

Take it away, The One!

virginiaelizabeth - Jul 25, 2006 12:35 pm (#317 of 2990)

hehe Finn I have a riddle ready but it's really easy as it's the first riddle I've ever written, but I'll put it up anyway!

I can open doors
and seal them just as well.
use me if you need something,
or even if you don't.

I can be happy or confused
and some may never see me,
so do not scream, be quiet
for your secret's safe with me.

Yeah told you it was bad! Random and obvious, I just can't make them sound good when spoken out loud! Oh well, have fun with it everybody!

Ok Tori was reading this thread and she pointed out that Azi got the riddle. So sorry!! I think this may have been a case of the mysterious "disappearing post". Anyway, Azi got the right answer. It is charms!

I can open doors - alohomora charm
and seal them just as well. - coloportus charm
use me if you need something, - accio, the summoning charm
or even if you don't. - banishing charm

I can be happy or confused - cheering charms and confundus charms
and some may never see me, - disillusionment
so do not scream, be quiet - sonorus and quietus, both charms
for your secret's safe with me. - fidelius charm

take it away azi!

A new riddle! Apologies for the delay, I forgot I had this to do, and went shopping (got some *very* good deals though ). I wrote this in 10 mins so excuse if it's really bad!

Wands crossed
Stars discharged
Beauty embossed
In ice and blue

* answers below *
Spoiler:
azi - Jul 27, 2006 11:44 am (#347 of 2990)

Beauxbatons is correct, Julie!

Wands crossed
Stars discharged - The Beauxbatons emblem has two crossed wands, with three stars emitting from each one.
Beauty embossed
In ice and blue - At Christmas Beauxbatons is, in Fleurs opinion, much nicer because they have ice sculptures; no ugly armour or poltergeists. Their robes are also pale blue silk, and Fleur was regarded as beautiful. The background of the Beauxbatons emblem is also pale blue.

Take it away, Good Evans!

Good Evans - Jul 27, 2006 12:18 pm (#349 of 2990)

as i have no idea who the lady is in the hangman I am not going to finish it!! I will however post the new riddle - apologies for bad rhyming!

Some would say I am sweet,
blonde others might say.
Part of me is royal
but even insects come my way
My insides are filled with acid
and my wand won't cast a spell
Can you guess what I am?
I hold a secret of which I can't tell

* answers below *
Spoiler:
Good Evans - Jul 28, 2006 4:29 am (#364 of 2990)

absolutely right Phelim!!!

sweet as honey and honey blonde

part royal - part of the name is duke which is lower rank royalty
insects (well technically I could be wrong - what is a slug anyway??) slughorn of course loves honeydukes

the inside of honeydukes have acid pops (you were right there Lina!) and licorice wands (which of course don’t cast any spells)

there is a secret trapdoor to the tunnel to Hogwarts as Phelim said.

so all in all it comes down to Honeydukes.

you will have to post a riddle Phelim, and hope it goes quick!!

Julie

The sword bit is to do with the sword of Damacles (or how ever you spell the name), which is the same as the creator of the potion. But at least it got the riddle side of things going again.

Oh, the pressure of having the riddle!!!

Let me think about this.

OK - here goes:

I should help you get where you are going, but I can hold you up instead.
Don't forget about me, or you'll end up stuck with me.

John Bumbledore - Aug 22, 2006 8:24 am (#767 of 2990)

Here is my riddle to transform:

Can see the first is in the Minute,
but not in the Hour.

And the second is heard,
when one stops to think.

The last is in Vandal,
but not in London.

Okay, go figure!

Well done, Azi; you are correct. My riddle was about Minerva. And thank you Neville for the complement. You correctly pointed out what I hoped to be subtle hints made with italicized text.

No one mentioned, if they noticed, what I thought would be the more obvious hint: The first letter from each of the three lines spelled CAT. Perhaps I should have made it more difficult

Take it away, Azi; you have earned the next riddle! (or pass it to another)

John - I didn't see the CAT hint! I saw 'er' straight away, and then puzzled for a couple of hours.

Edit - here's an easy riddle!

Intelligent,
Independent,
Perceives dishonesty,

Who am I?

Argh, I wrote and posted a message but it didn't appear.

Anyway, Neville, you were right - the riddle answer is Crookshanks/Kneazles. I think it's pretty self-explanatory.

Neville Longbottom - Aug 24, 2006 9:03 am (#795 of 2990)

Who am I?

I'm one of a famous group of four.
And in spirit the closest to Dumbledore.
You don't need to be especially bright,
And you don't need to have, the family’s right.
Brave deeds are not my ability test,
I'll welcome you always, just do your best.

Sorry to leave you riddle-less but I've been away from the computer for the weekend. But here's one to try:

Well done Puck. I'm pleased to see that part of the riddle caused some thought.

Need Puck’s answer, but never got a chance to copy it before WX closed forever.
