5. Is it magical? Yes.
6. Does it contain anything that once came from a living thing? Yes.

10. Has Harry ever had direct contact with it? Yes.
11. Is it one-of-a-kind? No.
12. Regarding question 6 ... is the thing itself alive, meaning it's an animal or creature of some sort? No, not at all. It just contains something that came from something living.
13. If a penguin encountered it in a dark alley, would the penguin run? If the thing was alone in that dark alley, the penguin probably would not run. (Have you ever seen a running penguin?)
14. Can you put other things in it? (Not necessarily penguins.) Yes.

26. Can I clarify the answer to Q6. Does Does it contain anything that once came from a living thing? Does it mean
1) A pair of nylon tights came from a living thing e.g belongs to a human.   or
2) A leather bound diary comes from a once living thing e.g a cow hide.
It is more (but not exactly) like the latter but this "something living" question may be misleading rather than helpful. Still if you want to know the answer to it, consider again my answer to Q19.
27. Is it connected to Quidditch? No, but this kind of question may be useful.
28. Hmm. Made from plant, then (like a flowering penguin shrub)? Not like a flowering penguin shrub.

37. Is the item mentioned in more than one book? Yes.
38. Is it used for cleaning? No.
39. Is it in a memorable scene in the books? It depends on what you call a "memorable scene". There is one scene I consider memorable but others may not. (It is memorable enough to make me think of this thing for this puzzle. )
40. Since this object, is in a way, specifically made to contain things (from Q #25), does it have a separate top and a bottom part that snap together when shut? I'm not sure about that but even if it has a similar structure, it will not be in the usual way.
41. Is it a magical trunk like the one Mad Eye had? No. I was afraid that my answer to Q39 would not be clear. It does not close like a trunk.

43. Is this object spherical? No.
44. Is it an Invisibility Cloak? No.
45. Did the part of whatever it is that came from a "living thing" . . . come from a creature of some sort? No, it came from a plant.
46. Is it used by Hagrid? It is not mentioned.
47. Did the "plant" give some paper the object would be (at least in part) made of? Yes, it's paper!

-----------------------------------------------------

post #1032:

Congratulations, Legolas!!!

I'm not going to repeat the whole long set of Qs and As now - yes, the answer to the puzzle is Christmas Crackers! (Not specifically the one the chess set came from just any cracker.)

The "see Beyond the Penguin" comment wanted to be a hint (like penguin - bird - vulture - cracker OR penguin - snow - winter - Christmas - cracker).

I did not think it would be such a difficult puzzle but I hope you had fun. Thanks for being patient and persistent, everyone!

Well done, Legolas!!!!

Edited to add Q's 76, 77, and 78 into this list, the contents of post #1032, and <*br> after each line, in order to have a complete (and shorter) record of all the Q's asked for the '20 Questions Archive'. In addition, the questions from 35 onwards had to be renumbered, since there were 2 Q #35s.

23. Do we see it in the first three books? No.
24. Is it Moody's magical eye? Scratch that, he's an Order member.
25. Is it made of more than one material? I'm not sure how to answer this question. Parts of it surely have different textures, but I think it is a single "unit" ... that's all I can say.

Congratulations, Julia!

Legolas, I was thinking of a quill as a tool of communication--which is how I consider a pen--in that one writes with it.

It does not run on petrol/gasoline, by the way (had to look it up to make sure); it runs on diesel, so I thought I'd try to trip you up a little bit by answering "No" to question 28. And apparently, the InterCity 125s don't actually use Platform 9 in the real King's Cross because it's not long enough! So I guess JKR slipped up again there!

Congratulations, Mrs. Brisbee! Your turn now.

Mrs Brisbee - Dec 21, 2008 12:09 pm (#1373 of 2993)
Edited by Potteraholic Mar 4, 2011 3:52 pm

1. Is it an object? Yes.
2. Is it a person? No.
3. Is it magical? Yes.
4. Is it designed for a practical purpose? It is useful, but not actively used.
5. Is this object Dark? No.
6. Has Harry used the object? No. It's not actively used, but he's seen it in action.
7. Is it bigger than a bread box? By volume, it's probably around breadbox size, give or take a little.
8. Does an adult own this object? Yes.
9. Does this object detect dark magic or curses or enemies? No, not directly.
10. Is it the silver instrument DD uses in OotP to ask about Harry's dream? No.
11. Is it in the possession of a teacher or Hogwarts? No.
12. Is it the wireless in the Weasley home? No.
13. Do we see this object at Hogwarts? No.
14. Does this thing have a voice to speak? No auditory voice.
15. If this object is "not actively used", did Harry see it in somebody's memory? No. By "actively used", I mean that no action is required by a person to operate it, not even a penguin. It just works.
16. Do we see this object in more than one book? Yes.
17. Do we see it in the Lovegoods house? No.
18. Do we see it used in the first three books? Oddly enough, no.
19. Do we see it in DH? I thought it would have at least been mentioned in passing in DH, but I can't find a reference to it. If I'm wrong, I promise to iron my hands!
20 - Does it belong to a member of the Order of the Phoenix? Yes.
21. Can it be found in the Ministry? No.
22. Is this object, which just works and requires no actions by a person to operate it, fixed to one spot? No, it can be picked up and moved, and has been, though generally speaking it was made to sit in one spot.
23. Does this object work permanently like a magical "perpetuum mobile"? Though it does have magical moving parts, and might work forver, at some point some of its components need to either change or stop working in order to remain pertinent.
24. Has this object ever visited 12GP?
25. Is it Molly's clock with 9 hands? I know it is called a grandfather clock the first time we learn about it (GoF). In HBP Ch. 5, however, it is described as "perched awkwardly on top of of a pile of sheets in the washing basket," and we learn that she has taken to carrying it around the house with her. If it fits into the laundry basket and she carries it around the house, it might be about bread-box size.

Yes, it is the Molly Clock.

Solitaire has the puzzle! Yes, I assumed that if Molly can carry it around, it must be a portable size. Hmm, I guess that part about it being a grandfather clock is confusing. Ah, well.

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the answer, the winner's name, and an accompanying message.

16. Is this object made of metal? No.
17. Is this object made of paper or cardboard? No.
18. Does it belong to a professor? At one point, yes.
19. Does it come to Hogwarts in HBP? No.
20. Is it used by a student? Uhm...yes.

========================================================

BTW, there is a question from Legolas which was not answered.--Solitaire

Thanks, Solitaire, I had completely missed that! Sorry, Legolas!

11 B. Is it used for malignant purposes? For example the cursed necklace was used to try and kill Dumbledore. No, not usually....but, yes, this was used for a malignant purpose at one point.

21. Do we see this item in any other book besides PoA? Yes, remember I mentioned that it did not come to Hogwarts in PoA, but later in the series.

22. Is it edible? YES!

23. Is it the poisoned mead that nearly kills Ron?

Yes, you have it Solitaire! I was thinking of M. Rosmerta's oak-matured mead....it is first mentioned in PoA when the professors have a drink at the Three Broomsticks and Harry overhears them talking about Sirius Black being his godfather. Then we see it poisoned in HBP and nearly doing in dear Ron.

I thought that no one was considering anything like food, so I gave the hint of it not being permanent....figured it wouldn't take long for someone to get it then!

BTW, mead really is a lovely --although alcoholic-- drink. If you are of age, be sure to try it sometime. But it is potent...a little goes a long way.

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included the answer, the winner's name, and an accompanying message.

Mrs Brisbee - Jan 10, 2009 10:35 am (#1783 of 2993)

1. Is he/she/it magical? No.
2. Is it a person? No.
3. Is it a place? No.
4. Is it an object? Yes.
5. Is this non-magical object owned by a witch or wizard? Yes!
6. Do we see this object in more than one location? Yes.
7. Has this object ever been a present? No.
8. Has this object been bought at Diagon Alley, although it is not magical? Unknown. I don't recall a store for said object in Diagon Alley.
9. Is this non-magical object owned by a current or past member of the Ministry of Magic? I think the answer is yes, but the answer might be technically, no. Probably no. I need to think about the definition of "Ministry of Magic". Is the Wizarding government supposed to mirror the British Parliament exactly? So the "Ministry" is the governing body, right? Now I need a lesson in British government structure. Edited: I think I'll interpret Ministry of Magic broadly as "Wizarding Government", and say yes.
10. Is this object owned by a student? No.
11. Do we see it in more than one book? Yes.
12. Is this non-magical object seen in DH? Yes.
13. Is it owned by Dumbledore? Yes! Which is why 9 confused me. Is the Wizengamut part of the judiciary, and in a parliamentary system is it considered part of the Ministry branch? Anyway, it looks like it is part of the Ministry in the Wizarding World as the whole government is simply called the Ministry of Magic, even if the ministry isn't the whole government in a parliamentary system.
14. Do we see this non-magical object of Dumbledore's "in the flesh" or do we only ever see it in the pensieve? Edit to make it a yes/no question: Is it only seen in the pensieve? No.
15. Is this object edible? No.
16. Is this object "owned" by other people in the HP series, although in a slightly altered form? Dumbledore, and no one else, has always owned this one item in its exact form as far as I know. Other people own objects of this kind, although in slightly different forms.
17. Is it Dumbledore's glasses? YES, It is Dumbledore's iconic glasses!

Congratulations, Tom, the game is yours!
