1. Is it an object? Yes.
2. Is it human? No.
3. Is it magical? No.
4. Do we see it in the first three books? Yes.
5. Is it in Hogwarts? We see it there once....
6. Do we see it in a place other than Hogwarts? Yes.
7. Is it something that would fit in a shoebox (a non-magical average sized shoe box)? Most likely, yes.
8. Does Harry bring it to Hogwarts? No.
9. Does it come to Hogwarts after having been seen somewhere else? Yes.
10. Is it owned by a student? No.
11. Does it come from Diagon Alley? No.
12. Do we see this object in PoA? Yes.
13. Does an adult bring this to Hogwarts? Perhaps not personally, but, yes, and adult does cause this to happen.
14. Does Dumbledore send this thing to Hogwarts? No.
15. Is it something like the diary that Lucius Malfoy stuffed into Ginny's bag? No.
16. Is this object made of metal? No.
17. Is this object made of paper or cardboard? No.
18. Does it belong to a professor? At one point, yes.
19. Does it come to Hogwarts in HBP? No.
20. Is it used by a student? Uhm...yes.

HINT: The "object" is not permanent.

========================================================

BTW, there is a question from Legolas which was not answered.--Solitaire

Thanks, Solitaire, I had completely missed that! Sorry, Legolas!

11 B. Is it used for malignant purposes? For example the cursed necklace was used to try and kill Dumbledore. No, not usually....but, yes, this was used for a malignant purpose at one point.

21. Do we see this item in any other book besides PoA? Yes, remember I mentioned that it did not come to Hogwarts in PoA, but later in the series.

22. Is it edible? YES!

23. Is it the poisoned mead that nearly kills Ron?

Yes, you have it Solitaire! I was thinking of M. Rosmerta's oak-matured mead....it is first mentioned in PoA when the professors have a drink at the Three Broomsticks and Harry overhears them talking about Sirius Black being his godfather. Then we see it poisoned in HBP and nearly doing in dear Ron.

I thought that no one was considering anything like food, so I gave the hint of it not being permanent....figured it wouldn't take long for someone to get it then!

BTW, mead really is a lovely --although alcoholic-- drink. If you are of age, be sure to try it sometime. But it is potent...a little goes a long way.

Mrs Brisbee - Jan 10, 2009 10:35 am (#1783 of 2993)

1. Is he/she/it magical? No.
2. Is it a person? No.
3. Is it a place? No.
4. Is it an object? Yes.
5. Is this non-magical object owned by a witch or wizard? Yes!
6. Do we see this object in more than one location? Yes.
7. Has this object ever been a present? No.
8. Has this object been bought at Diagon Alley, although it is not magical? Unknown. I don't recall a store for said object in Diagon Alley.
9. Is this non-magical object owned by a current or past member of the Ministry of Magic? I think the answer is yes, but the answer might be technically, no. Probably no. I need to think about the definition of "Ministry of Magic". Is the Wizarding government supposed to mirror the British Parliament exactly? So the "Ministry" is the governing body, right? Now I need a lesson in British government structure. Edited: I think I'll interpret Ministry of Magic broadly as "Wizarding Government", and say yes.
10. Is this object owned by a student? No.
11. Do we see it in more than one book? Yes.
12. Is this non-magical object seen in DH? Yes.
13. Is it owned by Dumbledore? Yes! Which is why 9 confused me. Is the Wizengamut part of the judiciary, and in a parliamentary system is it considered part of the Ministry branch? Anyway, it looks like it is part of the Ministry in the Wizarding World as the whole government is simply called the Ministry of Magic, even if the ministry isn't the whole government in a parliamentary system.
14. Do we see this non-magical object of Dumbledore's "in the flesh" or do we only ever see it in the pensieve? Edit to make it a yes/no question: Is it only seen in the pensieve? No.
15. Is this object edible? No.
16. Is this object "owned" by other people in the HP series, although in a slightly altered form? Dumbledore, and no one else, has always owned this one item in its exact form as far as I know. Other people own objects of this kind, although in slightly different forms.
17. Is it Dumbledore's glasses? YES, It is Dumbledore's iconic glasses!

Congratulations, Tom, the game is yours!

TomProffitt - Jan 11, 2009 2:35 pm (#1828 of 2993)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 24, 2009 7:31 am

1. Is it a magical person? No
2. Is it an object? Yes
3. Is it a magical object? No, or at least not that we are aware
4. Does it belong to a Wizard/Witch? No
5. Do we see it in the first 3 books? Yes
6. Does it make (or is it capable of making) a sound? Yes
7. Do we see more than one of them in the series? Yes, but I am referring to a specific item of this type
8. Do we see it at #4 Privet Drive? No
9. Does it belong to a specific muggle we know in the books? No
10. Do we see it at a wizarding place? Yes
11. Do we see it at the Burrow? No
12. Is it portable? No
13. Do we see this particular item at Hogwarts? Yes
14. Is it bigger than a bread box? Yes
15. Does it belong to Filch? No
16. Can it be found at Gringott's? No
17. Do we see it in more than one book? Yes
18. Does it belong to Hogwarts (rather than to a particular wizard or witch)? Yes, but it is associated with a particular character
19. Is it associated with Dumbledore? No
20. Is it associated with Hagrid? No. Prior to question 18, I was answering "belongs to" as though the associated character were the owner. Technically, though, the object belongs to Hogwarts. So, the object is not associated with a Witch, a Wizard, a Muggle, Filch, Dumbledore, or Hagrid
21. So a big, bulky thing is standing around at Hogwarts, cannot be moved around and makes sounds. I'd say it's a piano, but there isn't a piano mentioned in the books. Is it standing in a classroom? No. Not being portable does not necessarily mean that it is as big and bulky as piano.
22. Is it associated with McGonagall? No
23. Is it the clock in the clock tower? (Or am I suffering from movie contamination?) No, it is not in the tower, and Yes, you are suffering from movie contamination.
24. Is it ever used by one of the professors in teaching a class? No, we never see it used by a professor in class and it is highly unlikely that they would do so, conversely I think it is highly probable that a professor has used it outside of class.
25. Is it something that is located inside the castle? Yes
26. Is it located in a common area to which all students and faculty alike have access, like a hallway or the Great Room? Yes, technically it is restricted to half of the school, but that is a rule we see frequently violated
27. Is it associated with a magical being? I'd say, Yes, as you have to have been a magical being to become one of what the associated character is
ETA 28. Is it by any chance located in the girls' bathroom where Myrtle hangs out? Yes, it is
29. Is it her toilet? Yes it is! Yea, I didn't think that it would be this hard.

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the answer and an accompanying message.

Post  Potteraholic Sun Mar 27, 2011 10:44 am

Solitaire - Jan 12, 2009 7:59 pm (#1857 of 2993)

1. Is this a person? No.
2. Is this something or someone from a particular book? That is, does it appear only in one book or is it seen in more than one? This particular one is seen only once, in one book. There are other similar ones, however, and we see them somewhere else.
3. Is this something a magical object? It was not magical, but it was used for a magical purpose. (That was a big hint!)
4. Is it an animal? No.
5. Is it in one of the last three books? Yes.
6. Was the magical purpose it was used for helpful to Harry? Yes, it was.
7. *ahem* Is it bigger than a bread box? No, I don't think it is. It might be a wee bit smaller, actually.
8. Was this item useful to Harry in potions class? No.
9. Is this non-magical object owned by a student? No.
10. Did we see this object at Hogwarts? Yes.
11. Is the object owned by a staff member of Hogwarts? Well, it's at Hogwarts, and a specific staff member uses it. Whether it's actually owned by that person is unclear ... and unimportant.
12. Is it used by Madam Pince? No.
13. Does it lie around in a room, or is it carried around a lot? We only see it once, so it's hard to say. It was sitting on a surface. Then it was used. That was it!
14. Was it the portkey Dumbledore created in OP? Tom, you must be psycho--um, I mean psychic! YES, that is it!
15. Is it used in potions? No.
16. Is it used by Mr. Filch? No.

Congratulations, Tom! The next game is yours!

1. Is it a place? No.
2. Is it an object? Yes....
3. Is it magical? No.
4. Is it a person? No.
5. Do we see this non-magical object at the Dursleys? No, heaven forbid!
6. Is it bigger than a breadbox? No.
7. Is it small enough to go into a pocket? Might be a tight squeeze, but, yes.
8. Is it made of metal? No.
9. Is any part of it made of paper? Hmmm, maybe...but not the live part **BIG hint**
10. If it is an object, but it has a "living" part, is it a plant? No.
11. Is this object some kind of animal? Nearly...yeah...sorta.
12. Maybe like a pet? No, not desirable as a pet.
13. Do we see whatever this is in PS/SS? No....and since this is proving to be a confusing topic, here's a hint: we see these live,non-magical things in several books, but the specific one I'm thinking of (remember 'Vernon's mustache' vs. 'a mustache'?) is seen in only one book.
14. Do we see this specific critter in one of the last three books? Yes, in one of them.
15. Does Harry have one of these? No.
16. Do we see or hear about it in a Care of Magical Creatures class? No.
17. Does this non-magical critter appear in OotP? No, but you're close...
18. Do we see this critter at Hogwarts? No.
19. Is this critter dangerous? Only slightly.
20. Is it the garden gnome decorated to be an "angel" on top of the Weasley's Christmas tree in HBP? YES! I think it's the funniest thing in the entire book! Congrats, Julia!

Whew! Can anyone else appreciate my dilemma? Garden gnomes are sort of human like, although they are treated like a garden pest...like moles or a destructive insect. And, despite the resemblance to human body, face, etc., they do not interact intelligently with humans, or with each other for all that we see in the books. So I decided that they were not human, or magical creatures like centaurs or goblins, or plants, or places.....that seemed to leave only the category of "things" or --as we'd been stating it-- "objects". I did look them up in the Lexicon, but did not find any info to affect this view of garden gnomes. It did say that Xeno Lovegood referred to their magical abilities, but we never actually saw any evidence of that.

Congratulations, Orion, the next puzzle is yours!

OK, the puzzle is solved. I hope you don't mind that I decided to think of a person who is not a specific person. Several people can be Secret Keepers, in the books we have two (Dumbledore and Pettigrew). These two happen to be male (and human) but it does not mean a Secret Keeper always has to be male (or human, for that matter). I guess a Secret Keeper is typically an adult (not only in the actual story) but perhaps it is possible, in principle, to make an underage wizard or witch a Secret Keeper (we are not told). Dumbledore is at Hogwarts most of the time but Pettigrew is not. I had problems with questions like "do we see this person in PS?" or "do we ever see a portrait of this person?" because we do see Dumbledore in PS and we see his portrait, but in PS Dumbledore does not appear as a Secret Keeper (the concept is not introduced yet) and Dumbledore's portrait is not the portrait of the Secret Keeper but of the Headmaster. That's why I answered "yes and no" - we see a specific Secret Keeper but not "the Secret Keeper".

legolas returns - Jan 29, 2009 2:59 pm (#2220 of 2993)

1. Does the thing have the letter 'M' in it? Bit random your first question but yes there is an M in it somewhere.
2. Is the thing a person? Partly.
3. Is the person magical? The person refered to is magical.
4. Is this thing a centaur? The person is not a magical creature.
5. Is it a member of any humanoid being? (An alternative would be Mad-Eye, because he is only partly human and partly wood.) 100% homegrown Human! This does not contradict Q2 so don’t be confused.
6. Is it a group of humans? A group always suggests three or more people so the answer is no.
7. So this single individual with human genes, magical but only partly a person contains an M, which is a great help. Is he male? Yes, but in another way it is female.
8. Is the colour purple involved? The colour purple is not involved although I wish it was because it's my favourite colour.
Please note that you will not need to currently look up books to know the answer to this. Don't worry Azi you will know what I am talking about.
9. Is it a specific person with a name or is it an expression for a member of any sort of persons (Sorry. Partly persons.)? Both but the name is not the main item being identified.
10. Is it two people? Yes, two people are involved but one of them is the individual of importance with the item we are identifying.
11. Is it a title? No.
12. Is the item smaller than a postcard? If you placed the item on the postcard it would fit even though it is thicker than a postcard. If you flattened the item it would still fit on the postcard but it would be really messy *shudder* and you might want to be sick.
13. Do we see this at Hogwarts? Yes, but it’s seen in other places as well.
14. Do we see this in all seven books? Yes and also in the Epilogue in a different place.
15. Is the item a shop-bought item? It’s not something you can buy.
16. Is the item unique and inherited? It is certainly inherited.
17. Are the item and the person(s) always together? (As in we see this item always with the same person?) The item always comes with the person.
18. Is the item a part of the body? Yes, but identification of the body part is not the final answer.
19. Is the item green? Yes. A very nice shade of green by all accounts.
20. Has anyone, either a character or the narrator, mentioned whether this item has an odor? No, it’s not smelly.
21. Would be person(s) be on the good side? Yes.
22. Harry's green eyes or the green eyes inherited in the family??? Yes, the eyes are green and are Harry's eyes, they are inherited and in the family but that is not quite the final answer. So everyone tells him!
23. Is it the "look at me" moment? (Trying to find the M.) No but what was Snape doing? It has been mentioned in every book.
24. Legilimency? Snape looking into Harry's eyes and reading Harry's thoughts? No, I don't think Snape was doing Legilemency as he was dying.
25. Lily's eyes? Yes, you are correct. I was looking for Harry has his Mother's eyes.

Congratulations Me and my shadow. This is mentioned by everyone who knew Harry's parents.

me and my shadow 813 - Jan 31, 2009 1:35 pm (#2271 of 2993)

1. Am I human? No.
2. Is this an inanimate object? Yes it is.
3. Can it be found at Hogwarts? Yes, sometimes.

8. Could you put this object in your pocket? Yes.
9. When this non-magical, inanimate object is at Hogwarts, is it always in the possession of one particular person? We only see it with one person, but it has technically been in two people’s possession in Hogwarts.
10. Does anyone wear this object? No.
11. Is the object a Dark object? No, it’s not Dark.
12. Is this object used for teaching? No.
13. Does it belong to Dumbledore? No, it does not.
14. Is this item a Deathly Hallow? No, it is not.
15. Do you store something within the object? Not exactly – the answer is both the object(s) and what they are stored within.
16. Is any part of the object made of paper? We see this object in two different settings, and the storage part changed. In both situations, the material make-up of said storage is not described, but could be paper-like. The contents within is not of paper at all and is the "real" answer here.
17. Is any part of this object edible? Yes.
18. Does the edible part of this object taste sweet? Yes.
19. Is it the hat adorned with a vulture that Snape got out of cracker and gave to DD? No.
20. Does the edible part of this object have anything to do with an orange or some other citrus fruit? No is the technical answer. Yes is the lenient (leniant?) answer.
21. Was this item seen in Honeydukes? Yes, it was.
22. Is it a lemon drop? No, it is not.
23. Is this object a piece of some sort of candy? ****y****e****s****
24. Non-magical candy ... Is it some of their home-made fudge? No, it is not.
25. Is it the crystallised Pineapple that Slughorn likes? YES!

Congratulations, legolas! The answer I had in mind is Sluggy's box/bag of crystallised pineapple. We see it in a box in Sluggy’s office and in a bag in Sluggy’s hand at Honeydukes.

· 9) It must have been in Tom’s possession within Hogwart’s before he presented it to Sluggy in “Sluggish Memory”.
· 10) I was soo tempted to say ‘well, Luna might like to make them into a necklace to wear with her radish earrings’!

Take it away, legolas……

Well done! Your turn now. My comment about grown-ups was just meaning that I would not expect a grown-up to cast such a spell.

1. Am I human? No.
2. Is it an object? Yes.
3. Is the object used for non dark purposes rather than being a dark object? No.
4. Does it talk, cry, yell, moan or give out any other sound? No.
5. Is it magical? No.
6. Could you buy it at Borgin and Burke's? Gee, I don't know. I suppose it's possible.
7. Is it dark? No.
8. Is it a weapon of sorts? (Knife, dagger...) Yes.
9. Can it be worn? No.
10. Is it the knife Bellatrix uses to kill poor Dobby? Yes!!

(That was too easy, wasn't it? I wanted something that was not so obscure it would take 50 questions to guess and would allow another game today. I hate when they are only updated once or twice, especially on a weekend, when people can actually play!) Anyway ...

Congratulations, Mare! The next game is yours!

1. Am I human? No
2. Is it an object? Yes.
3. Is it magical. No
4. Do we see it at Hogwarts? No.
5. Do we see it somewhere in London? Yes.
6. Do we see it at 12GP? No
7. Do we see it at the Ministry of Magic? Yes
8. Do we see it in DH? No.
9. Is it part of the fabric of the MOM e.g Non removable? No
10. Does it belong to the Ministry of Magic or someone who works there? (As opposed to being brought there by someone else.) Good question, I guess technically it belongs to the MoM.
Hint: Although when we see it no MoM workers are present at all.

11. Is it a rare object? Pfff, hard questions: Yes and No. It is certainly not valuable but in a way also very unique. If I had to choose my answer would be No.
12. Does it play a role in Wizard Trials? No.
13. Is it found on MOM levels 1-4? No.
14. Is it found in the Department of Mysteries? No
15. Is it found in what could be called the reception area e.g the area with the fires (atrium)? No
Again; it is possible that the object is taken there, but it isn't mentioned there and we don't actually see it there.
16. Is it associated with a particular Ministry worker? No, although the object I'm thinking of is associated with a particular person. Also hint: Think moustache vs. Vernon’s moustache.
17. Does the object move? Not on it's own, No.
18. Is it small enough to fit in your pocket? Yes. (Which means it can be moved if you choose to carry it around...)
19. Is it made of paper? No.
20. Do we see it in Arthur's office? No.
21. Does it have something to do with Mr. Crouch? No, sorry.
22. Do we see it in more than one book? No
23. Do we see it in the Aurors Department? No.
24. Is it to do with the Department of Magical games? Only asking because Hassan Mustafa the referee at the World Cup had a Vernon Dudley like moustache. No, the moustache was a reference to an earlier discussion about looking for one particular item, even though there are more of that sort of item.
25. Do we see it in OOTP? YES!
26. Do we see it in HBP? No.
27. Is it an Educational Decree? No.
28. Do we see it during the battle at the Ministry at the end of OP? No.
29. Is it a token from the Muggle phone booth entrance for "visitor to the Ministry"? Yes, I think... Are you sure token is the word you are looking for, or are you thinking about the toilets? also I'm looking for a specific item. (But I'm not fussy anymore, it's time for someone else to get a turn at this game!)
30. Is it the little badges that the phone spits out. "Harry potter, Rescue Mission"? YES! Congratulations! I didn't think it would take that long. I really love the dry sense of humor that comes with that badge.

The problem with the badges is that it is never made clear if you are allowed to keep them (so is the MoM the owner, or is Harry?).
And with the badge Harry gets when he goes to the hearing we are told he pins it on, with the badges the rescue mission gets it isn't very obvious if they are left in the phone booth or put in a pocket, so it is also not clear if they ever get to one of the floors. Made the questions a bit harder to answer then anticipated...

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the answer and an accompanying message.
