I realize it's a bit of a childish question, but I feel that it has to be asked so the rest of us can get a better idea. How old/what gender/where are you? Also, feel free to post any other information about yourself or just draw attention to your info.

Me- Ben

Aim: BKRed09

Most of the rest of pertinent info is in my... info.

Joa Pendragen - Oct 5, 2002 9:50 am (#4 of 658)

Jamie JoAnn Russell, is it warm in California today? I got up this morning and it was 50 degrees out! :-(

Jami JoAnne Russell - Oct 5, 2002 9:53 am (#5 of 658)

It's kind of chilly, for California, but probably warm to you.

I wish I liked somewhere else though. Someday, if I ever have money, I'm getting out of here.

Joa Pendragen - Oct 5, 2002 10:04 am (#6 of 658)

There are plenty of towns that could use a librarian. But if you've never seen or shoveld snow I would'nt sugjest Vermont. It's harder work than it looks.

I'm a library page, not a librarian. I don't have a degree. Actually I'd like to move to England. Better food, I like the weather better (I enjoy rain), and better television. Give me a British sitcom over an American one any day.

Joa, you can use HTML in your reply. I just change the font to Comic Sans and change the color. If you look right above the reply box, there is a link that should explain HTML.

This is the tag I usually put in front of my replies (taking out the * before) <*font face="Comic Sans MS" size=2 color=b93b8f>

I find this page to be the most helpful in finding a neat-o text color [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The click on original color chart to see colors and the code for them.

I am 24 in Dallas, TX. It never gets REALLY cold here, but it stays above 100 for months and months in the summer. But it's not ALL bad, they let us carry guns around. =) (I was being sarcastic, in case nobody caught that.)

Kip Carter - Oct 8, 2002 8:18 am (#38 of 658)

I previously posted only the basics. Now I am going to expand. For those who care, it looks like I'm the old man or grandfather of this forum based on the twenty who have said anything above. And yes, I am a grandfather being my granddaughter will be 23 months old tomorrow, the 9th. I do not consider myself an old man, even though my age says otherwise.

I am an accountant and engineer living in the middle of South Carolina. I was an engineer in the space program back in the 60's and have lived all over the world.

I am a big Harry Potter fan. I have read and re-read each of the four existing books at least fifty times each. Yes, I'm a speed reader. I am a big supporter of education being that my wife is a teacher. When I first read that young people were really reading these books, I had to buy the first book to understand why. That's when I got hooked. I feel that young people in the US do NOT read enough because they rely on television too much. I am forever giving HP books to young people in the hopes that it will enkindle their reading skills. I have even given HP books to people of all ages just to get them to read. I tell them that if a young person can read this book, I am sure that they can. It works!

As for the books, I'm looking forward to the next three. I like the plots, the verbs used by JKR, the so-called inconsistencies, the way that the books make your mind draw a picture of the characters, their surroundings, and what's happening.

I felt that I have said too much; but I thank Steve for his Lexicon with all its collection of information. I have been visiting his Lexicon since it first appeared. I thank each of you on this forum for having the patience to get this far in reading some ramblings from an old man.

Wes Bourland - Oct 8, 2002 11:30 am (#39 of 658)

Joa Pendragen - Oct 8, 2002 12:06 pm (#40 of 658)

Yo Kip, I love things that have to do with space!

Kip Carter - Oct 8, 2002 12:31 pm (#41 of 658)

Joa (and I know that you real name),

When you said "..love things that have to do with space!" and if you were referring to the space program, you are welcome to email me at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. Just remember that I left the space program in 1969 and what I have to share may be almost like a history program. 1969 was when we finally placed the first man on the moon. There was a lot of excitement about the space program then. Now everyone is rather blasé about space. In fact, most of the young people your age seem to care very little about space. I praise you for your feelings if I understood you correctly. If not, thanks for the Yo!

And BTW, I noticed that in some of your other posts, you were interested in the weather. In Columbia, South Carolina today, we had our first nice cool day today. It makes sense being our state fair is in progress. It's 61 degrees now at 4:26 in the afternoon. It has been in the 90's.

Kip Carter - Oct 8, 2002 3:08 pm (#43 of 658)

Ravenclaw Chaser, welcome to the Forum! I have been reading your post and I like your no nonsense style. There are some good posters on this board. It makes the reads very interesting as long as we do not try to become one-ups-manship forum. Every now and then there seems to be a clash in posts. But the forum so far reflects the personality of Steve's great and informative Lexicon.

My favourite book is PoA/GoF, I can't decide, and my favourite characters are Fred and George Weasley, Ron, (they crack me up! - 'Can I see uranus too Lavender?) Sirius and Lupin (He's so sweet!)

OK, everybody else is mentioning pets (even if they are Kneazles and Hippogriffs) and I can't resist...

We have five cats- Cookie, a siamese, Alvin and Zack, both black, Sapphire, long-haired gray/blue color, and Snidget, a golden tabby cat.

I need to take a good picture of Alvin (my favorite) so it can be my potrait. (as if you care)

If we are including pets...then I also have

Daria and Dawson - two Rottweilers named for two characters from the Highlander TV show (Darius and Joe Dawson)

Spike, a parrotlet, Piper, a cinnamon cockatiel and Shadow, a white faced dutch blue peachfaced lovebird (how is that for a mouthful?) (these are all birds, for those who are not certain)

Blizzard and Sandi, 2 dwarf Siberian hamsters..both girls and because they are dwarfs, they can stay in the same cage...unlike their larger counterparts who will kill one another.

wormsé - Oct 17, 2002 8:36 am (#68 of 658)

Pets? Well... Hank is our German Shepard, he's about 9 now I think. Daisy is our Golden Retriever, about 8 years, then our cats. Thomas... a gorgeous black cat that weighs at least 10lbs, Elsa ( a tabby calico mix), Abigail Kathleen, our siamease, Jackson (average gray tabby), and Dezi.... the big fat one. We did have Jefferson and Franklin, but... well we have reason to believe Hank killed them. (Well something did) and then there's Goerge the Cockatiel...

My name is Joshua, 22, in North Texas making plans to get back to South Texas (Austin/Round Rock) as quickly as I possibly can. ^_^

My obsession is to become the biggest HP-knowledge geek in the region (good to see so many fellow Texans around) - I have read Chamber of Secrets (my favorite) no less than 20 times through, and though I have not read the others nearly as much, when I am bored or have free time I don't know what to do with I just pick a random chapter of a random book and start reading until I learn something new. I also have the supplement books, and am currently writing a fanfiction series called "In the Face of Destiny" which I will be posting links to soon, as soon as I get the chapters I have complete beta-read.

I'm also a rated expert on Brooms and Potions. ^_^

Slytherin Prefect - Oct 18, 2002 6:24 am (#75 of 658)

Glad you asked. ^_^

It's mostly a reference to the HP Trading Card game. I'm the Quidditch and Potions master. ^_^ Therefore I am generally recognized as such when it comes time for me to challenge other people to a game in the chatroom. 90% of the time, they know what they're going up against.

Which is why I love decks like my Colin Creevey Discard Deck which throw them for a loop every now and then. ^_^

However, being the obsessed geek I am, I do also know my brooms and potions from the books as well. ^_^

Hi, My name is Laura and I am a die-hard fan of HP. I have probably read each book more than 10 times and right now my mom is reading one of my copies of SS and I am wanting to re-read it so I'll probably go buy a 4th copy.

I am 27 years old and live in Northwest Florida. I am currently going to school up here. I enjoy writing, reading, and watching shows like Buffy and Charmed.

I hope to hear from everyone else.

Happy Harry Reading... Smile

Hey all! I'm 22, F, live in New Jersey and am a college senior in Virginia. Like all of you, I'm obsessed with HP, read all 4 books every week, and somehow manage to keep a great social life at the same time.

liliaceae - Oct 23, 2002 1:35 pm (#85 of 658)

Hey y'all! My name's Taryn, 19, and I'm attending UT now, currently changing my major by the week [This week's choice? Interior Design/Classical Civilization. Yup, I'm a freak. Proud of it too!]. Good to see a couple other Austinites lingering about...its an awesome place to live.

I had no intention of doing the forum thing until I checked out the lexicon's. None of the idiocy I've seen in my friends' forums, everyone here seems pretty cool. I'm sure it'll be a pleasure to share my closet HP addiction with all of you!

I am new to the Lexicon forum even though I have been coming to the lexicon itself for quite awhile. My real name is Tony and I am a 29 year old Geophysicist from Missouri. I am married and in debt to my wife for getting me hooked on Harry Potter. I have enjoyed reading the posts and posting my own ideas and flavors for what is to come. I would like to thank Lexicon Steve for his effort and great wisdom for creating this site. Prefect Marcus - I like your style! I usually post pretty late, but I look forward to reading more and sharing the magical world of Harry!

Hi all, My name is Tim, I'm 53 years of age, live in the UK, and am not ashamed to say that I love the Harry Potter books - I must have read each one half a dozen times so far. I think this forum is brilliant, and The Harry Potter Lexicon the best Harry Potter site on the web (I include the Warner Brothers one in this statement!).

I've read all of the books and I know the title of the fifth book. You all should too. (It's harry potter and the Order of the Phoenix) I dunno exactly what it's about............................. But I'm destined to find out!! I'm also a pure blood Lord of the Rings fan. (The troll in the Lord of the Rings movie looks a lot better than the one in Harry potter. Audrey O'Connor - Oct 30, 2002 5:46 pm (#104 of 658)

Hi everybody, Audrey, 42, from the San Francisco Bay Area. I became a Harry Potter fan after the movie came out. I saw the movie and was discussing it with a friend at work. She owned all four of the books and brought them in for me to read. Finished all of them in less than two weeks! Now every time I say anything about Harry Potter at work she just laughs and says she has created a monster.

One of the things I like the most about the books is how they appeal to people of all ages and from so many different countries. This forum is pretty good proof of that! It's great that we can have something so positive in common.

kimiraikkonen - Oct 31, 2002 6:48 pm (#107 of 658)

After over a month on this forum I have made the astonishing discovery that I have not told anyone that I am male. I was assuming people could tell that from the personality, character and tone of my posts, and then I realised WJ was female after thinking otherwise for several weeks (sorry WJ).

While I am at it I might as well add an extended introduction. I have a Maltese named Doggo which was picked up from the street, and I love soccer both as a participant and spectator sport. Unlike most Singaporeans I have a great interest in American sports especially baseball. I don't get the opportunity to play them here except basketball which I don't really like to play, although I do have a baseball glove and bat.

Here are the teams I root for: Diamondbacks, Bears, Knicks, Maple Leafs and Everton.

And of course I love Harry Potter.

Professor McGonagall - Nov 1, 2002 7:50 am (#109 of 658)

Hi, my name is Minerva McGonagall (like Hermione, THIS IS my name) I'm NOT 70, as my friends like to tease me about, but I do act a lot like she does. I like to wear my hair up (not always in a bun, but it has to be put up), I've worn square glasses for a few years now (I like to be different, then I read Harry Potter, and I cracked up). I'm only in my late teens, but people say I act a lot older (I'm still not sure if that's good or bad, I guess it depends on your point of view.)

Kathy Lynch - Nov 1, 2002 7:59 am (#110 of 658)

Errol the Wanderer - Nov 1, 2002 1:00 pm (#111 of 658)

Hello everyone. I live in Utah and am a 38 year old male. Harry Potter is so much fun. I enjoy getting into trivia contests with others who profess to like harry potter. I have 7 children and finally convinced my wife to read the books, which she insisted reading to me (my second time through). Having been around the internet for a while, a word of caution! Though this forum is fun, I would strongly suggest that none of you become so comfortable to share personal information about yourselves that would help a potential predator find you. Girls are not the only ones who are susceptible. Let's exchange great ideas, but keep it safe and private.

I'm 34. I am from Oregon. I have an eight year old boy and a four year old girl (and my wife is due Dec. 6th with no. 3, a boy) I have only read the first three HP books (those are the only ones the library I work at has), but I purchased the audio CD versions to listen to while I drive to and from work, so I get to listen about 50-60 minutes a day. I won't get all four books finished until about six-seven weeks from now. I also like puns (which explains my forum name). I am a big Lord of the Rings fan which means the next couple of years are great fun for me at the movies.

I have only been acquainted with Harry since August 2002 and I was hooked instantly. It is a closet addiction and this is a wonderful outlet for it. I honestly thought I was losing it after I read the books the first time and I just couldn't stop thinking about them. I actually wish that I could be 11 years old with magical powers. I'm glad I'm not the only one, and apparently not the worst;^D. Now I don't feel so crazy. I don't own any of the books yet, but I am hoping to get a hard back box set for Christmas...

My name is really Laura. I am 29 also, like Jason here... I am finishing up a degree in Art History with an Anthropology minor and I'll be heading off to Grad School soon. I love the HP series, and would love to write a series too, someday. I am a bookworm, I like obscure topics, such as ancient history, prehistoric art, ethnohistory and native arts. Religion, spirituality, and culture interest me, as do things such as shamanism and magic. I don't read much fiction really, but I love JKR's style and imagination. Oh and I'm in the St. Louis area...

It's nice to meet you all. Oh! I also work in a library as a microforms assistant (my 2nd job).

I've only read the series 4 times so far, but I just started this past summer. I have no idea how many times I 've watched the movie, though... I LOVE medieval style architecture and, well my favorite animal is the owl, too. *_*

Let me start out by saying thank you to Steve for setting this up. I have posted a few times ( some very out there thoughts, thank you all for not trashing me Wink ) and really enjoyed the thoughts that came back. I have noticed the wide age gap and the different countries represented. I love the fact that, although everyone might not agree with everything, we all get along in a mature atmosphere. Anyway I am getting away from the string Smile. I am a 39 year old male from the great state of Ohio, in the US A. I have been married for 17 years no kids ( my wife thinks that I am bad enough lol ). I started reading the books thinking it was going to be a child’s book (I hear though boos and hisses now ). Boy was I wrong. When I started reading I could not put them down . . . I didn't start reading them until all 4 books were out. My niece said they were very good books, so I went out and bought all 4 at once. There I go again off the thread, ok I will end now with one last thank you to ALL of you for making this a great place

Kip has been badgering me to introduce myself, so here goes: I am a 21 year old boy from Washington State, and am currently finishing my senior year at Stanford University in California. I chose Aberforth as my screen name because, in my opinion, Aberforth is one of the most memorable characters in the Harry Potter series. He is only mentioned once in only a couple of lines, but nearly everyone who has ever read the books, knows who he is. I look forward to getting to know you all in this wonderful shrine to the magic of J.K. Rowling.

Kip Carter - Nov 16, 2002 2:50 am (#137 of 658)

Mogli - Nov 16, 2002 3:58 pm (#140 of 658)

Just say "hello"!

I am 26 years old and I like Harry Potter very much.

My native language is German and I am trying to read a lot of English now.

The first books I read were the Harry Potter books it was a great pleasure to read this books in English (I enjoyed them much more when I read them in English than in the German translation).

I am very glad to find a homepage like this!

Please excuse my bad English - I am trying to improve it.

On Thursday I have been in the new Harry Potter film which I like as much as the first.

From which countries are you all? (Sorry, I am just a bit curious)

It is nice to see how many people like Harry Potter as much as I do!

W J - Nov 16, 2002 4:33 pm (#141 of 658)

Welcome, Mogli, to the Lexicon forum. Many forum members speak English as a second language and we all seem to make ourselves understood, so don't worry about making mistakes in your writing. We welcome all Harry Potter fans who want to have some intelligent (and sometimes humorous) conversations about the books. Enjoy!

Dragoness of Ill Faith - Nov 16, 2002 6:37 pm (#142 of 658)

Greeting all! I'm a 21 year old female HP fanatic from Canada. I'm fortunate enough to have surrounded myself with friends who share my interest in Harry Potter... but unfortunately, not to the same (obsessive) degree as me. Hence, the many occasions in which they back away slowly from me when I start speaking Parseltongue Wink I think I've read just about every thread in this forum (took me late into the night too!) and I'm enjoying y'all and your discussions thoroughly!

My name is Christopher, I found my nickname on a packet of garden seeds (has a nice latinate ring, dontcha think??) and I'm finally getting around to introducing myself in this thread after hanging around the forum for a few weeks and going to the chat room a couple times.

As of a week ago I'm 42 years old. I'm married with one daughter and two sons, we all live in the Milwaukee (Wisconsin, USA) area. I'm an electrical controls designer/programmer working for a company that installs food processing equipment (basically big pressure cookers) all over North America, so I get sent out of town a lot. In my spare time I read, I listen to music, I accumulate old hand tools for woodworking, and I'm making my first violin. I hope to make a few more, as well as a classical guitar and maybe a lute or two someday.

My 9 year old daughter just discovered Harry Potter just this fall after being indifferent to the whole phenomenon for a couple years. I was surprised at how good the books are -- I just completed PoA earlier this week (it's now my favorite,) and now I'm a few hundred pages into GoF. As far as fiction goes, my very favorite author is Raymond Chandler. Yep, different genre... He wrote some wonderful novels and short stories about private detectives in mid-20th century Los Angeles, Philip Marlowe being his most famous character. His prose is incredibly beautiful.

And if you're still with me after the noir fiction rant ... I'm currently fascinated by the music of English composer John Dowland. I imagine this is the music that Dumbledore listens to in his spare time. Please investigate his Lachrimae for viols and lute -- they're indescribably beautiful. Complicated, cerebral, ravishingly melodic yet full of angst. Give 'em a listen, you probably won't be disappointed.

W J - Nov 16, 2002 8:41 pm (#145 of 658)

PV, you got your name off a seed packet! Well there goes my musings about you being Romainian or some other continental flavor. And married with children to boot! Your forum name is totally misleading!

However,I like it anyway. Wink

I am 18, female, now I'm in Urbana (University of Illinois) but I'm from the Chicago area. HP is actually quite popular among the college students. CoS has been sold out here (in campustown) for two days.

Welcome, Bailey! I'm at SIUE! ~_~

Matt Allair - Nov 17, 2002 8:01 pm (#148 of 658)

I chatted a little with Kip today and he wanted me to post a little about myself. I am from the San Francisco area, I'll be turning 35 this December. Have a background in the Film business, a computer tech for a small company. I do a lot of writing, mostly an aspiring Script writer. Music has always been a major part of my life, I'm a musician as a recreational hobby. I discovered the Harry Potter books around 1999 and really became hooked on them. Glad to be a part of this group!

Alish O'Neil - Nov 18, 2002 4:53 pm (#149 of 658)

Hi My name is Alish as you can see. I am 12 years old and I love Irish step dancing. The area I live in is south of Dublin, it's called Country Cork. The character that would most describe what I look like is definetly Ginny.

Aett - Nov 18, 2002 7:58 pm (#150 of 658)

Hello forum! My name is Brian, and I'm 19. I was born and raised in California (mostly in the middle/northern area) but I've been living on an Air Force base in Okinawa, Japan for the past few months. Smile So, be happy that you can see the new movie -- I have to wait at least a couple more months! The same goes for the new book, whenever it comes out... it will take about three weeks for it to be delivered to me! Anyway, I love the HP books as well as discussing them, if anyone wants to chat my AIM name is AettEternity. (Keep in mind the huge time difference, though!)

Shy Snape - Nov 19, 2002 3:44 pm (#152 of 658)

Hi! Hi! ^_^ My name's Shy Snape. And yes, that's my *real* name. Too bad it's completely different from my personality. I'm a loud, outspoken 17 y/o girl from the middle of nowhere (that's Oklahoma, USA to those of you not from here).

I started reading Harry Potter sometime last year I think and have suddenly become overly obsessed with it. I own all 4 books, which I've read a billion times, and the movie (which I sadly watch every night and fall asleep 10 minutes into it). Snape and Hermione are my two favorite characters. I sometimes wish that I had Snape's tongue and attitude and Hermione's brain, it'd make me a much more interesting person.

Um, yea, anyway... as I said, I'm 17, so that would make me a Junior in High School. I play soccer for my school's Varsity team and I'm in just about every school club there is, so I rarely have free time. But, in those few spare moments, I like to write fanfiction (which stinks but I dun care) about various things. I also enjoy chatting and talking to other HP fanatics like myself. My AIM is Kaiyton, and my MSN is [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] As I said, I LOVE to talk to people so IM me if ya wanna chat sometime!

Ari - Nov 19, 2002 5:36 pm (#153 of 658)

Well, thanks to a couple of other "older" Potter-nutters I guess I can come out of hiding and introduce myself. I'm 27, female, married with a four year old " reverse house-elf " (she creates the chaos, I clean it) and a one year old cuddly little wizard. For now we also house a gray cat, however she will probably accompany my daughter to Hogwarts one fine day. We live close to NYC ,but I am originally from Germany.

phoenixeleven - Nov 20, 2002 11:11 am (#154 of 658)

I guess I may as well post here too since I've been begging people to read my crazy ideas.

I'm a 19 year old female college student in Massachusetts (English major - probably why I look so hard for symbols and allegory) and an aspiring author/screenwriter. I didn't start reading Harry Potter until Newsweek ran that article on Goblet of Fire. Then I stole my brother's copy of Sorceror's Stone and the rest is history. Someday I'll write my own novels, they just won't be in the fantasy genre.

Speaking of which, I'm very glad that the two fanfics here are so well written and interesting because I can't stand fanfiction that just has a ton of swearing, sex scenes and bad spelling (you can tell I spend far too much time on the internet).

Oh, and you probably won't see me in the chatroom because I don't like them (I always feel like I'm intruding on something).

Makgraf - Nov 20, 2002 8:42 pm (#155 of 658)

I'm a 17 year old Canadian Harry Potter fan. I really like the books and I love the lexicon. When I saw there was a forum, I had to go and post on it. Smile

Originally I was very dismissive of HP because I thought it was a "children's book". However, after reading it I grew to really, really like it and converted all my friends who had been anti-potterists like me, into full- fledged Potterfans.

bldgblocks - Nov 21, 2002 8:10 am (#156 of 658)

Hi there. I'm 36 years old, from California and live with my partner of 11 years and one wacky cat named Tommy. My real name is Kari but the bldgblocks tag has stuck with me through the years, you can call me "bb" for short. I first read Harry Potter and the Sorcer's Stone as a suggestion from a co-worker and have been hooked ever since.

My apologies to anyone in the chat room yesterday. I probably came off a bit rude or abrupt but am normally not that way. It's really not a bright idea to try to work (I'm a reservations agent) and chat at the same time. lol

I have not yet posted to this forum, but I check the Lexicon every so often for updates on the new book, so I figured I'd check this out today. Also because I am curious and know the soutghern half of the lower penninsula fairly well, whereabouts are you from in Michigan, Steve?

ok sorry for sort of spamming here, but after reading everyone else's postings there are a couple of other things I'd like to say. FOr one, I have one pet, a 5 month old kitten named Austin, who still has his claws and will probably be as big as Crookshanks one day. I live with my fiance in Grand Rapids, and we are both BIlly Joel Fanatics. FInally-Aett is that a pic of Shinji from Neon Genesis? I love that series!

Oh wow, Kip. I was just re-reading some old posts so i can remember who's who, and i saw that you lived in Columbia. I spent some of the best years of my childhood in a little town near there called Irmo. Ever heard of it? Home of the Okrafest? (yeah, it sounds lame, but i found twenty bucks laying on the ground at an Okrafest one year. That's a FORTUNE when you're eight.)

This is my wife's 26th year teaching in the Irmo school system after teaching 6 years on the other side of Columbia. I have been a part of the Okrafest for years and yes it is still going and is extremely big now. So it has been almost sixteen years since you were here. You definitely would not recognize anything now.

P.S. it wasn't REALLY off-topic, the thread IS "tell about yourself..."

When I first got into anime, I was at the mercy of whatever the local video stores had to rent. That resulted in me watching a lot of dubbed anime. I got used to it, so I can watch most dubs without writhing in pain. Smile But, if I get to choose, I choose subs. Thank God for dual-language DVDs, huh?

This is off-topic but, SP, your fanfic is great. Hurry and finish. Smile

Mermista - Nov 23, 2002 1:35 pm (#170 of 658)

You mean doujinshi? I have a few of those, mainly MWPP+S centric (not yaoi). I'd be lying if I said I was fluent, but I can help out with translations if you ever need it.

I guess while I'm here, I might as well do the a/s/l thing...
I'm a 25-year-old female, married, no children, 7 cats, 2 dogs, 2 birds, 1 bouncy ferret, and lots of fish. I live in Colorado currently, but I'm not overly fond of it. I'm currently working ever so slowly toward my master's degree in behavioral neuroscience. Voracious reading is my primary hobby. Unlike my namesake, I neither sing nor swim well. It's all a deceptive façade.

I'd normally end this with a tidy Harry Potter geek code, but I have yet to find a version that I like. Oh, well.

Marie E. - Nov 23, 2002 1:48 pm (#171 of 658)

Mermista-Where in Colorado? I'm in Colorado Springs. There are a few other Coloradans here if I remember correctly.

I checked my other posting and I noticed that neglected to mention my family so..I have been married for nearly eleven years and have two daughters, five and three, and one fifteen year old cat. We have been here in Colorado for eight years. Prior to that we were in Georgia, near Savannah, and North Dakota where I grew up.

Mermista - Nov 23, 2002 5:16 pm (#172 of 658)

I'm up in Boulder county, but I'll be spending the holidays with my husband's family who lives in Colorado Springs. ^_^ Anything you recommend seeing or doing while I'm in town?

Marie E. - Nov 23, 2002 9:17 pm (#173 of 658)

Seven Falls always has a holiday light display that's pretty cool. Shopping in Old Colorado City or Manitou Springs is fun during Christmas too. If it hasn't snowed much you could try a trip to the summit of Pikes Peak. Sometimes this time of year the summit road is closed to the public, but we went up one year on Christmas Eve. That's all I have off the top of my head.

Hi there,

I'm VeelaGirl, fifteen years old and I live in Holland. I've been a Potter fan for three years now and have been reading and re-reading them almost non stop since then. VeelaGirl is a nickname I gave myself two years ago - I don't like it very much now - when I discovered Potter on the internet. Whenever I feel bored or feel a sudden extreme craving for book five, I come to the Lexicon. Don't know why though ... inspiration I guess. Also, I'm extremely fond of theories, and this forum seems perfect for them. And the last thing I wanted to say:

From "Marieke van Hees": I have read the books in English and Dutch and I prefer the real deal, of course, but the Dutch translations are VERY good, too.

I SO agree ^_^

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Yep, CU is my alma mater. And it really is a lovely, lovely place. The campus and surrounding areas are beautiful, and the entire city truly seems tailor-made for college students. I don't know anything about their humanities departments, but the psych department is excellent. ^_^ One drawback is that the cost of living in Boulder county is very high, so be prepared to have plenty of roommates or commute from Denver. The only other negative thing I can think of is that it's very homogenous. Almost everyone you meet will be white, upper-middle class, and moderately liberal. Oh, and the traffic is horrible. But other than that, it's great. ^_^

I mean not just the kind of fan-fic where you just sit down and write, but I have drafts and people to peer-edit it, and all. My life basically revolves around that book. Out of the real Harry Potter books, I like Chamber of secrets the best, I think, but it changes over time. I never really liked the fourth book. If I was at Hogwarts, I'll probably be rither in Slitherin or Ravenclaw (in that order), and certainly not Hufflepuff. Well, my book is sort of complicated to explain, because it goes into a whole bunch of other stories. But I like to look in the forum and the lexicaon itself for ideas.

hi everyone. great forum. 32, male, eastern Pennsylvania, married, 3 kids. I got the first book for my oldest son when he was about 4, but he didn't have the attention span to sit through it. I read the first 2, then after seeing the SS movie, he wanted to read the book. We polished the first 3 off reading a little every night at bedtime. Now we're half way done with 4. I got caught up and finished the book after he went to sleep a few weeks ago. He loves it, but I'm a bit worried about how he'll process the last few chapters in goblet. every once in a while he'll crawl into bed in the middle of the night and say he had a bad dream about voldemort. He's 17 now. no wait, he's 6. My wife and I talked it over and will probably take to reading those chapters during daylight hours after school, and maybe it won't spook his sleep. Anyone else deal with this?

Potter-aholic - Dec 4, 2002 1:30 pm (#198 of 658)

Hi everybody! I just started posting on the Lexicon Forum yesterday and it was really exciting to see my message posted and get responses to both of them within a day! In fact, I checked the forum before I checked my own personal email!

Thanks Lexicon Steve for creating this site. I agree with all the other folks who prefer this site to other HP sites. It really is the best one I have found to satisfy my cravings for all things Potter.

Now for some info. about me, since that's what this thread is all about. I'm 35, female, live in NYC and teach in a public school. I heard about Harry Potter from a Reading Workshop I attended 5 years ago and started reading the books because my students highly recommended Books 1 and 2 to me (the only ones out at the time). I teach 10 and 11 year olds. I delight in having conversations about the books with anyone who's interested, and enjoy discussing theories with the students in my class who've read the books. Maybe they'll join the forum discussions one of these days. Maybe some of them are already posting messages already! Smile

Valerie Fore - Dec 4, 2002 11:28 pm (#199 of 658)

I came across Harry Potter after 3 years of resistance. I finally bought P/SS at a half price book store and promptly got myself in trouble at work because I couldn't stop reading it and as a result, didn't work for an entire day. I also got in trouble for wearing my Muggles for Harry Potter! t-shirt which is, apparently, against the dress code. Who knew? Needless to say, I had all four books in the span of a week and am working on reading them to my 3 year old son. He keeps telling me to skip to Harry Potter and the Goblins.... he doesn't understand that there is no such thing. I'm 22, female, and from Austin, TX. This is my first post... seemed like a great place to start. I would like to say that the Lexicon has GOT to be the coolest HP site that I've hit yet... I'm determined to follow every link and read every page. Fat chance of that, I think.

I would like one too... use it to scare people...

Alianora - Dec 5, 2002 7:16 pm (#202 of 658)

Hi, I'm 15 and I live in Maryland. I'm obsessive with all things HP and I love this website! Does anyone have an opinion on my idea that Percy is going to join Fudge's side in the next book?

Mrs Fortescue - Dec 6, 2002 7:40 am (#203 of 658)

Hi everyone, been reading this great site for a while, thought I'd join in. Thought I'd like to be married to the owner of the ice cream parlour, who is kind to Harry! In real life, I'm 40, female and live in the UK. Brought up in Edinburgh and have been in THE coffee shop. Married, with a 2 year old boy and a mad Kneazle lives with us. I first read Philosophers Stone to find out what the fuss was about -now I'm hooked. Love all the threads, the depth some of you go with your thoughts is amazing!

Dumbledore II - Dec 7, 2002 5:15 am (#204 of 658)

Welcome Mrs. Fortescue. Which part of the UK do you live?

Padfoot - Dec 8, 2002 6:19 am (#205 of 658)

Hello, Potter fans!!! I'm a new member, but I've been visiting this forum for months and months, so you may not know me... but I know you. Bwahahaha. (Little scary, ain't it?)

Anyway, I'm a 16 year old girl from New England... And it is really cold out here. Very, very cold. We're lookin' at a white Christmas!!! (Hasn't happened for years, whatever fools say about NE)

I've read all of the HP books about 12 times each, baring Prisoner of A, which I've read about 20. In my opinion it's the best b/c it doesn't end with the classic "Harry defeats Voldemort and somehow manages to escape." And Lupin helps.

Harry Potter is cool. Really cool. Of course, the statement "Harry Potter is cool" is sorta redundent... Harry Potter should be defined in a dictionary as "cool, very awesome book"

Asktqa - Dec 8, 2002 7:06 am (#206 of 658)

Hi everyone! I'm a 16 year old girl from the U.K, I've been reading Harry Potter since I was 11 and found the first book at my school book fair. ( I thought it would be boring because of all the awards it had won - its been my experience that nearly all the books that win awards don't deserve them, so I was pleasantly surprised..) I read and also write stories of my own a lot of the time.

Leelee - Dec 8, 2002 9:03 am (#207 of 658)

Hey, much like padfoot, i've been reading the forums for a while, but haven't often posted.

I hope my "unique" sense of humor can help, rather than hinder, discussions.

well, see you around.

Sly Girl - Dec 8, 2002 10:49 am (#208 of 658)

greetings everyone- just wanted to say hello- I've been a lurker on the forum for about a month and half now and finally got up the nerve to sign up. Smile It's fascinating reading, I have to admit. lol It's also nice to see I'm not the only Potterfanatic. All my family and friends think I'm a bit nuts as far as the whole universe is concerned. Very Happy A little bit about me- I'm 31, living in Arizona, single and basically an all around geek. When I grow up I want to be a writer, though. (hah) And ah yes.. about my nick, I think Slytherin's get a bit dumped on. Smile

We're not all bad.. we're just written that way....

Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

dudley - Dec 8, 2002 11:18 am (#209 of 658)

'suppose i may as well write a bit about myself. my name is really andy, i live in london (the uk one!) and i am 19 and a student doing econ/maths... so i reserve the right to be a geek.

if i am not in the uni bar discussing mr potter i am wasting my time writing comments on forums like this one.

i'm definatly a ravenclaw and if i could play quidditch i would be a beater (i play rugby in the rw)

WonTon Sean - Dec 8, 2002 11:58 am (#210 of 658)

Allow my self to introduce... Myself. After being recommended to the Lexicon by a friend and pouring over the entire thing, along with the forum, I decided to join and share my own ideas and thoughts in this wonderful forum. I am 21, currently living in the small town of Smackover, Arkansas, and loving the Harry Potter books, in addition to many other books. I guess that's it.

Emma Clarke - Dec 9, 2002 5:30 am (#211 of 658)

Welcome Emma Clarke!

Please feel free to share more about yourself, such as age, where you live, etc. I can see by your email address that you are anothr one of our growing European members. Feel free to post as you see fit and definitely enjoy what others have already submitted!

I do not try to personally welcome each and everyone who post to this thread "Tell about yourself"; however I felt that this would be a good place to tell you, Emma Clarke, that I moved your thread "What is Emma Watson's E-mail address?" to the area that is provided for the Harry Potter movies and the cast. Your thread is now #271 of the thread "-- Discussions about the Cast of any HP movie."

In the future, please read the various threads before starting a new thread, especially the thread "Please Read This Before You Post!" I hope that you understand. I thank you!

Istari Jones - Dec 9, 2002 6:05 am (#213 of 658)

Hi, everyone! I'm a fory-something SE Ohio mother of three who have nearly all flown the coop. When reading POA I kept wondering why I thought Lupin was so familiar to me and I realized my hubby has many of the same good attributes (without the werewolf thing). Professionally I'm a nurse. I was working on a degree in English for a while because I'm such a bibliophile. I LOVE all the analyzing and discussion of Harry & Co. Cannot get enough of it. Have wacky sense of humor - watched too many 1960s sitcoms growing up. The family thinks I've gone over the edge with HP but it sure is making it easier for them to pick out Christmas gifts!

Mickey - Dec 9, 2002 1:32 pm (#214 of 658)

Hi, I'm a female - Mickey is a nickname. I'm 45 and have been reading the HP books non-stop since July 4. Seeing the Sorcerer's Stone turned me onto them. My husband is just as much a fanatic as I am, and even my father's read the books and loves them! I love the mental exercise I get from reading the books - so much to think about! I'm from the Chicago area (you can tell I'm not a native or I would say "Chicagoland"), born in N.J., but I've long since lost my accent. I don't have kids, which is too bad because I would definitely let them read Harry Potter!

Istari - we have a lot in common - I love the 60's sitcoms, too!

Anna Diaz - Dec 9, 2002 2:20 pm (#215 of 658)

Hey, I am a 16 year old girl. I was born in Switzerland, but my dad got transferred to South Carolina when i was 5 so now i live in SC. I really love the books. At first i didn't want to read the books, but my friends kept telling me that they are really good, so i finally read the first one. Well, after that, i read the 2nd and the 3rd as well. All one after another. Untill the 4th book finally came out. And i read it in 4 days! They are my favorite books now. I can't wait till book five!!I really like the forum and reading everyone elses ideas about the books. Though i have to admit, some of them are downright silly! But i really like this forum, and I'm glad that i found this website!! It's great!

7 Veelas - Dec 9, 2002 3:24 pm (#216 of 658)

Hi everyone !

Stats: 32, married, reside in Chicago and I have been a HP fan since last November. (Saw the movie first, then read the books.) Actually I'm reading year 4 GoF at the moment. I would prefer to be all caught up with the 5th book finally comes out!

Kip Carter - Dec 9, 2002 3:27 pm (#217 of 658)

Welcome, Anna Diaz!

I finally see that there is a fellow South Carolinian on the Forum, even though you were born in Switzerland! I live outside of Columbia near Irmo.

Kip Carter

Istari Jones - Dec 9, 2002 8:23 pm (#218 of 658)

Hey, Mickey! You know, they just don't make theme songs like they did in the '60s. Even now, the theme from "Gilligan's Island" and "Beverly Hillbillies" still brings a tear to my eyes! We're close to the same age, I'm 46.

Nolwenn - Dec 10, 2002 9:11 am (#219 of 658)

Anna Diaz, where in Switzerland were you born ? I live right next to it ! And welcome to all the newbies. Have fun (I promise, you will...)

Kip Carter - Dec 10, 2002 9:22 am (#220 of 658)

Nolwenn, where in France do you live? My daughter and her husband have friends in that area that they visited the summer of 2001. Also, please visit the Chat Room every so often! We generally have a good time talking about any and everything. -Kip

Nolwenn - Dec 10, 2002 10:23 am (#221 of 658)

I live near Geneva, just on the french side... But my parents come from the south-east (Provence) and the north-west (Bretagne; I think it's Brittany in english). And about the chatroom, I love going but I'm afraid I don't have half the free time I would like to have... Sad I have trouble just keeping up with the threads !

Anna Diaz - Dec 10, 2002 1:13 pm (#222 of 658)

I was actually born in Wetzikon, Switzerland, but I spent my first five years in Jona, which is a town beside Rapperswil on Lake Zurich.

Jenna Boyce - Dec 13, 2002 4:06 pm (#230 of 658)

Hello everyone! I too am a Harry Potter junkie. I am also a Forum Virgin, so if I break any of the rules, please forgive me. It is purely accidental.

I am a 28 yr old mother from Utah. I swore a long time ago that I would never be a part of something that made people act so crazy. Like waiting outside in the freezing rain with a wind chill factor of -10°, for days, just for a book!! But my curiosity got the better of me, and 4 books later I cannot get enough of the HP gang. I actually squealed and clapped my hands when I stumbled across this site. Thank you Lexicon Steve for creating this site. Kudos on a job well done! I nearly went into sensory overload shock. So much information all in one place, all about my favorite characters, and it’s not even my birthday! Your time, effort, and research are greatly appreciated.

Oh, if anyone can tell me where I can get a “Free Dobby” t-shirt you’ll be my personal hero.

Denise S. - Dec 13, 2002 5:20 pm (#231 of 658)

Aett, I read your intro thing a bit ago and I am absolutely *exstatic* that you're on Okinawa! I lived there from 4th-almost 10th grade (tho not on Kadena). How is it? How long will you be there? Learned any Japanese yet? (I'd be more than happy to teach you the basics!!!) I believe my email's with my name, so go ahead and send one.

Wow...*eyes glaze over, thinking of the memories*

Brent Sloan - Dec 13, 2002 10:09 pm (#232 of 658)

I'm a 43 year old drywall contractor, family trade. College drop out, 23 hours short of electrical engineering degree. Yea, sad isn't it? Here in Kansas the land of Oz. I haven't seen Dorthy or Toto but we do get our share of tornados. Two years ago my twelve year old son brought along a Harry Potter book on a family trip to Port Aransas, TX. Well, I picked it up and have been hooked ever since. It's awful. This site is the only relief I've been able to find.

Kind of sounds like I just introduced myself to one of those addiction help groups. "My name is ... I was hooked ...". Sorry, I'm not looking to give this up. I want more!

Thanks Steve and Kip.

SilverTree - Dec 14, 2002 5:15 am (#233 of 658)

Hi everyone! I'm a 18 years old girl from Portugal (BTW, is there any portuguese people around?) and I'm in my first year of college, graduating in Philosophy... and obviously i'm fan of Harry Potter and I'm really glad that I found the Lexicon, it's such a great site!

Kip Carter - Dec 14, 2002 5:43 am (#234 of 658)

To Jenna Boyce, Brent Sloan, and SilverTree,

Welcome to the Lexicon Forum family. I do appreciate the sharings about yourselves on this thread. We have members from all over the world who are on this Forum at all times of the day and night. The Chat Room sometimes can get quite busy with all the different thoughts going on.

The Forum is not three months old yet, but we have grown as a very fast pace. As you can see from some of the "administrative type" threads, there are changes in progress. I hope that you have the time to really enjoy some or all of the threads.

Feel free to post to the existing threads your thoughts. But most of all, have a great time here! Steve says it best in his "-- Philosophy of this Forum" thread near the top of this Forum.

Extra to SilverTree: Look at the thread "Nimbus 2004 - In England" to get an idea of some of the members in the European community.

Nikki Forrest - Dec 15, 2002 7:48 am (#235 of 658)

Nikki Female 15 Fleetwood, England

The town i live in 'Fleetwood' is mentioned in one of the books !! in the broomstick servicing kit their is 'Fleetwoods' high-finish polish. Also the town next to where i live is called Blackpool this is also mentioned when Neville says his uncle threw him of blackpool pier (i dont know which one though because there are three!)

Kip Carter - Dec 15, 2002 8:17 am (#236 of 658)

Welcome to the Forum. And I enjoyed the personal touch that you have added with the broomstick servicing kit and the pier.

Thank you for posting and I am looking forward to seeing more of your posts in the future.

more europeans! Take a look at the nimbus 2004, in england? thread!

Lamb - Dec 15, 2002 12:47 pm (#239 of 658)

I've posted enough that I ought to say who I am. My name is John, male of course, I'm 55 so I can be company for Kip, retired after a career as a lawyer and bank executive. I live in Toronto, Canada, but I was brought up and went to school in London, England.

I read the first book (Philosopher's Stone up here in Canada) out of curiosity because people were talking about it, and like everyone else got hooked immediately.

My nickname was given to me on another site by a friend who liked cute fuzzy lambs- it is so inappropriate that I just had to use it. I'm very impressed with the way this site is run and the great originality of thought among the posters. If all the ideas floated here were put together, they would make a wonderful fantasy book!

Dumbledore II - Dec 16, 2002 12:45 am (#240 of 658)

Hi anne-sophie, good to see more europeans comming.

Marè, thank's for advertising.

And last but certainly not least, good to know who you are Lamb.

W J - Dec 18, 2002 12:12 am (#242 of 658)

no Seeker, we have several Asians on the forum, from Japan and Singapore, I think. Welcome to the forum.

Kip Carter - Dec 18, 2002 12:14 am (#243 of 658)

Welcome, seeker!

In answer to your question, you are not the only Asian around here! There are others! I hope they see this post and contact you!

In the meantime, enjoy the Forum!

Thanks! I am enjoying it. Smile

Marè - Dec 18, 2002 2:54 am (#245 of 658)

I will introduce myself too, I have forgotten to do it earlier. (silly, I know)

My name is Steffie, female, 22 and from the Netherlands. I am a studying water quality and I spend a lot of my time rowing. (of course I also spend a lot of time on this forum because there simply isn't another place with so many HP freeks to discuss the books with, you people make the waiting fun!)

Madam Poppy - Dec 18, 2002 7:46 am (#246 of 658)

My name is Kirsten and I have 4 children, ages 17, 20, 23, 25. My husband is a Pastor and I have lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Nevada, Alaska and now the state of Washington. I bought Books 1 & 2 for my youngest son and then ended up reading them after seeing the first movie. Ever since then, Harry Potter has been creeping into our house. I have all the books on tape now and just picked up the hardback books at a Scholastic Warehouse Book Sale in Charlotte, N.C. last week. Also found their "Literature Guides" for teachers to use in the classroom, which are very interesting. I've only had a computer for a couple of years and have never tried to join a forum before, so I hope you will be patient with me.

hi, I'm male and 23. is there anyone out there from west virginia? besides onyx (my sister)

I live in a quiet house near a park, surrounded by wildlife, as most west virginians prefer. I enjoy computers, but I'm usually found out on my hammock reading a good book.

we've got a bunch of pets. A blue collie pup named Hedgehog who was sired by a tri collie named chief and a blue collie dam named velvet. We've got a turtle called Stormin Normin ( there's a funny story as to how he got the name) some flamepoint himalayan cats, Angel, Comet, Ragnar (raggy), Willow, and Obsidian (sid). and after much begging from my sister we got a hedgehog, now we may rename our pup. and a few wild pets (kept outside, no exceptions) that include, but not limited to, a shrew, two wild turkeys that enjoy stealing dog food, and a baby flying squirrel.

kimiraikkonen - Dec 18, 2002 9:15 pm (#248 of 658)

Hey kimiraikkonen, I'm from the Philippines. I'll be moving to the US soon though. Hey I've been to Singapore, really cool place. I think I'm the only Filipino here. (",)

mystkyten - Dec 19, 2002 8:47 am (#250 of 658)

Hi, I am a 32 year old housewife. I have a son, 5 and a daughter 2. I borrowed the HP books from my nieces and nephew after I saw the first movie. I was HOOKED. I recently went and saw the second movie. LOVED IT! I was cruising the internet for any facts and trivia about HP and found the LEXICON. I am glad that I am not the only adult that loves HP! I think my daughter must be one of the youngest HP fans. Any time she sees anything that has something to do with HP, she starts to dance and yells "Harry Potter, Harry Potter". My mom is currently knitting a Harry Potter scarf for her for xmas.

Sorry for rambling Smile

I read HP at the request of a friend -hi Dave- and it was UNREAL. Especially the end of GoF, I finished it and just wanted more dammit, thus here I am. I'm a 17 year old Canadian student and (hopefully) writer-to-be with a passion for these books, for I believe them to be the new Big Thing in English literature.

I recall that I was quite dismissive of HP when I first heard of it, and often poked fun at a girl who loved them in my school. When I started reading them, however, I could not stop. When that same girl saw me with them then, she said: "Hey, I thought you didn't like Harry Potter... They all come back!"

I'm also something of a writer, having written one fantasy novel by the age of sixteen (unpublished). I usually post on the Lexicon while working on my next novel (I'm doing that now, actually) and very much enjoy the debates that ensue with the sharp minds found here.

Neilisa - Dec 31, 2002 3:01 pm (#269 of 658)

Hello everybody. My name is Grace from Tulsa, OK. I'm fairly new to the HP craze. I started reading the books about a month ago. I wanted to find out what the fuss was all about so spent the weekend at the local Barnes & Noble reading all 4 books. Of course, I decided to purchase them after I was done, and have reread them continuously ever since.

I'm 35, a programmer, your basic geek, avid reader, and I get really obsessive with things I'm interested in. I'm sooo glad I found this forum.

I'm a girl, 13, and a Harry Potter addict. I'm a Chinese Canadian (no I don't own a pet beaver) and my favourite thing to do while reading the book is picking out little details and guessing who will end up liking who. I also like Lord of the Rings movies but not the books.

Kim Wong - Dec 31, 2002 5:30 pm (#271 of 658)

Hello fellow Harry Potter fans! I'd like to thank the makers of this forum for grouping avid readers together. It's nice to know I'm not the only Harry Potter fan that likes to reread the books six times over!

Kim Wong - Jan 1, 2003 8:09 am (#274 of 658)

Sorry I don't speak a word of Chinese. I do know a little french though, it comes from being Canadian.

Hello everybody! My name is Allie, I'm 26 and I'm from California. I'm so glad I found this forum. I thought I was the only person above the age of ten that was completely obsessed with the HP craze! I've loved escaping into books ever since I was a little kid. HP made me feel like I was ten all over again. It gave me a great escape! I've been reading HP for about a year now. So far I'm on my fourth time arounnd. I can't get enough.

WOW! It's so great to find a posting place for all of my sparse and random Harry Potter thoughts. However, here are some random thoughts about me: I have spent 20 wonderful (some not quite so peachy) years in this existance:) I'm a "girl" cause i still like to have fun and be a kid but I inset the "" bc I do have the serious biochemisty streak in me, i.e. I go to FSU and am a Biochem major. I have lived between Florida and Greece for all of my life so to me Tallahasse is the North Pole (heck its been 20 degrees C something for the last week!*wink*) I'm also one of those people who is getting really antsy waiting for the next book. I do hate my impatience (argh stupid spelling). Ok I think bordom has sunk deep enough into all of you so I must be saying nightie night to you all:) Have fun out there!

Hi Allie,

I'm 38-year old Harry Potter fan from the Philippines. Can anybody else get older? I wonder! My wife and I loved the 2 Harry Potter movies. I've also read all the 4 books and Quidditch Through the Ages - loved them and the fact that a forum like this exists - for kids over 25! Hope to make some good acquaintances (maybe friends too) over a common interest! Happy Wizarding!

Edited by Jan 9, 2003 11:55 pm

Hi, everybody, my name is Drusilla (my friends call me Dru). I am 31 years old, a born Austrian but have lived in England and now live in Germany. I studied languages, literature and theatre and am now training to be a teacher. Such a pity you can't apply at Hogwarts, I hear they are always looking for teachers there ;-)

Two years ago my mom bought the Harry-Potter-books and I became interested and - even while reading the first book - absolutely addicted. I also watched both films several times and found them exceptionally well done.

The Harry-Potter-books have been my famous books since I first read them and I extremely enjoy talking and speculating about them. I am now reading the books for the third time. I only have the German edition (though I plan to buy and read the English one as well), so please forgive me if I cannot give exact quotations here or make mistakes, as the translation is quite good but not ideal and a few things differ quite a lot from the original.

The picture I chose to represent myself is Amber Benson (Tara from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"). I chose her, because I like her a lot and think I look a bit like her.

Dumbledore II - Jan 10, 2003 12:30 am (#285 of 658)

Hi Drusilla, I am Austrian too. Welcome!

I am really Caitlin McCoy, but the rest of the internet knows me as ianslove (with this same avatar).

18 year old female

Extreme bibliophile!!! My folks act like it's a bad thing!!

Became a Harry Potter fan last june (like a week before my birthday) when my sister's DVD club sent her the film and I took it from her!!!

As soon as I got a job in August, I bought all 4 books and love HP even more!!

My boyfriend and one of my former coworkers also love HP. My b/f tends to quote at will.

Oh, blonde hair dark brown eyes 117 lbs and about 5 foot 5 or so.

Hi all,

My name's Tim and I live in the UK. I'm a 53 year old Harry Potter fan who has read all the books several times over. And if you think I'm old for a fan, I lent the books to my in-laws, who loved them also. That's two Harry Potter fans pushing 80!

I thought I'd make my New Year's resolution an easy one this year. Read The Order Of The Phoenix!

Diagon Otter - Jan 16, 2003 5:09 pm (#299 of 658)

Hi, I'm 32, From Boston Massachusetts, now living in Pennsylvania. I am married with 2 little girls 3 and 6 years old. My husband and I love the books and are bouncing around with joy about Order of the Phoenix coming out this summer, Mid-Summers Day actually!

I noticed some other Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans out there so I will get off topic for a moment and say an extra HI to them and get right back to HP!

I have been reading Harry for some years now and the amount of times I have read them...i will not share, but I will share that I wanted my husband to read them I knew he would love them! But he has a very demanding job and when he gets home he wants to be with the girls or spend time with me so we started reading them aloud, that way we would be able to talk about the chapters as they go and spend time together, they are great out-load stories. I can't wait until my eldest daughter is 8 I think then I will start reading them with her!

Brandon Pennington - Jan 16, 2003 9:23 pm (#300 of 658)

Im Brandon Im 14, I live in Kentucky USA. Um, I really dunno what else too say this is a pic of me if it worked right. Ive read SS CoS PoA and GoF about seven times each. So if I can't think of anything else to say, I guess Ill cya guys around.

Hi Everyone,

I was SO impressed when I found the lexicon a few months ago! (Steve is the BEST!) I was here when the forum was started, but only as a guest and I have spent many, MANY hours reading thread after thread.

In the process I have learned many things, disagreed with some things, accepted others, and come to know many forum members even though they don't know me.

I've been here when people argued with each other and when they supported each other. I've read discussions which were humorous, frustrating, irritating, sad, supportive and most informative. I've been through "Join the Potties!", cried for Headache when he was in the hospital and again for Hamuera when Headache was gone, looked forward to Denise's next baby, appreciated Kip's work when he became co-host of the forum (Go, Kip!), been grateful for everyone's input, and marveled at the tolerance, patience, mutual respect and intelligence on this forum.

Since I know you, I suppose it's time you know me. I'm a 47 year old wife and mother of 3 (not so little any more) lambs aged 18, 20 and almost 22. And I'm another Oklahoman, although I was born in Kentucky, grew up in Michigan, and lived in Hawaii for 3 years.

I'm happy to be a member of the absolute best Harry Potter site on the planet!

Kip Carter - Jan 17, 2003 3:05 am (#302 of 658)

Thank you so much for the nice history lesson. It has been a fun and exciting three and a half months. I am definitely looking forward to see some of your posts in the future, considering the insight that you have from your past.

Welcome to the best Harry Potter family on the planet!

shepherdess - Jan 17, 2003 10:35 am (#303 of 658)

Thank you, Kip!

Marè - Jan 17, 2003 5:13 pm (#304 of 658)

The one thread I would like to call back from the grave is the "what to be called" thread, that one is long gone, but it was so funny. It was about the beginning of the potties and all the other strange societies we have around here. And I had the tears running down my cheeks reading it.

And hello Shepherdess (why the name?) I was one of the read-but-not-participate-persons, but it took you even longer to come out! Nice to see that you do eventually!

Istari Jones - Jan 17, 2003 7:58 pm (#305 of 658)

I have just re-read all the posts for this thread. I have to say I am really overwhelmed with the family we have here. All ages... all kinds of backgrounds...all kinds of interests...people from all over the world coming to this site to discuss Harry Potter. Why can't the rest of the world enjoy interacting with each other in peace and harmony as we do here at this Lexicon? Well, this may sound stupid, but here's to Steve and Kip, to us, to JKR and Harry Potter, ...and to love and world peace!

A Naive yet profound sentiment, exceptional in its ideology yet futile in the real world. The internet is the closest we can get to a workable Marxist system, people are mostly faceless and nameless so everyone is on the same footing.

Lucero de la Torre - Jan 18, 2003 12:48 am (#308 of 658)

Hello, I'm a 19 years old psychology student, I'm mexican and I've been a fan of the movies ever since the first came out, and a book fan only recently, and I am so glad there a lot of "old" fans out there, 'cause my brother is always teasing me about HP being just a boring children's book. By the way, does anybody know how can I get "The Order of the Phoenix" delivered to Mexico as soon as it comes out? I've tried to pre-order it but I haven't been able to. THANKS.

Ebba Lupin - Jan 18, 2003 1:15 am (#309 of 658)

Hi Lucero de la Torre, try amazon.com, or if that fails any other bookstore online. They all, as far as I know, have the "preorder your copy" function, and you can have it sent to where you live. I'm gonna have to order my copy of the 5th from England, because it won't be out in Sweden until sometime in 2004.

Istari Jones - Jan 18, 2003 7:49 am (#310 of 658)

Dudders.......Naive? Try idealistic and hopeful for a good world. I have lived through nearly a half a century of wars, racism, prejudice, incompetent bureacracy and the rise and fall of communism, as well witnessing the deterioration of morals/society in our/world. It would be altogether too easy to be cynical and negative. But in re-reading my statement it does sound that way. (Big Sigh here) I don't really like the Marxist comparison, though, but that's OK. All I can say is that when I get discouraged it's nice to go somewhere (this website) and to go away feeling better about the world.

Carina - Jan 18, 2003 11:28 am (#311 of 658)

Hi Lucero! Where in Mexico are you from? I have family in Baja California, but my mother's family is originally from the Mexico City area.

Dave Crowley - Jan 19, 2003 8:18 am (#312 of 658)

H1 Lucero. I had the same problem here in England, until the publication date was announced. I then got onto the website of Bloomsbury, the publishers in England, and it's ordered and paid for, to be delivered on 6/21. You can't get it from Bloomsbury due to copyrite laws, but why not try the Scholastic website? They are the publishers in USA.

Denise P. - Jan 19, 2003 8:27 am (#313 of 658)

If someone is wanting the British editions of the books, AmazonUK will ship to the US. There are loads of bookstores (online) in Canada that will ship to the US as well. The ones in Canada are the British editions and the shipping/exchange rate is better than that on AmazonUK.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] <--Chapters in Canada, currently OoP is $17.59 US with shipping $7

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]<--Amazon UK OoP is currently $13.70 US with shipping of $9.60 US

My name is, as stated in my handle Kimberly Bloink, though I usually go by just Kim. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but have lived on the east side of the state as well. I am twenty years old, and officially a junior at Grand Valley State University, though it will ake me another 3 or so years to complete my degree in HIstory with an emphasis on secondary education(my minor is english). I am engaged to be married on Feb. 14, 2004. And I think that's about it. I am curious as to where in Michigan our other Michiganders live though.

Hello, Sigrid, Hello, Marè ! Even if english is spoken here -schön zu wissen, daß wir uns auch auf Deutsch unterhalten könnten - und Holländisch kann ich immerhin lesen und verstehen. Un op "Platt" hefft ji ook de Probleme mit "de" un "de" nich, nur "dat" möötst weeten. So künn wi ook snacken över snaaksche Dinge. (Not to exclude all our english speaking friends: some bridge-building between dutch and german- though that would belong to the "Translations" thread)

Marè - Feb 11, 2003 4:04 pm (#335 of 658)

Hahaha, your "Platt" sounds like my neighbour! Living close to the German border, her dialect always sounded more "Deutch" than dutch. Smile

O and sigrid, I am working on my mail, but I still have to dig up a dictionary somewhere, I am definitely better in understanding German than speaking, or worse, writing it. Smile

I can't speak any other language besides English, unless you count just a few words. I wanted to take German next year, but no one teaches it at the highschool, so I will resort to French and Spanish. But anyways... I'm going to tell about myself... b/c I can't seem to find where I told about myself before... but anywho... I'm Lindsay, I'm 13, am in 8th Grade, and live in Kentucky. I've been here on the forum since about November, I think. I don't seem to post much anymore... I mainly just read the fanfictions and occasionaly visit the chatroom. That's about it, I guess...

Watashi wa Nihongo ga hanasemasu. Demo, Nihongo de amari jozu janai desu.

But hey, I'm going to Japan in May! I'm so excited, no one has *any* idea. Maybe I can improve my Japanese then. *Eyes glaze over as she daydreams about being in Japan and gets a little Japan-homesick* ... ^_^

Watashi no tomodachi wa san getsu ni Nihon e ikimasu.

I really need to practice also, I'm in my second semester of it. what is jozu janai. I've never been there but I would like to.

gracie me - Feb 14, 2003 5:49 pm (#349 of 658)

Hi, everyone. I began joining the forum just this week. But this is the first time I'll introduce myself. I am Grace, 21, female, from the Philippines.

I didn't like HP before because everyone seemed to do so. I guess I am a late bloomer since I only started reading HP books just last November after I saw the CoS movie. But after I saw the movie with my HP fanatic friend, I decided that if I am to watch the next HP movie with her, it'd be better if I already have read the books. I mean, it's pretty annoying to watch a movie with someone who keeps on telling you what's gonna happen next(Hermione will be attacked, It's Voldemort, etc.,). And after I have read the books, what can I do? I can't help but love them.

Denise S. - Feb 15, 2003 10:17 pm (#350 of 658)

Hee hee, Prof. Sprout, I was only saying that I wasn't all that good in Japanese. "Jozu janai"--"jozu" means skilled, "janai" is the short informal of "de wa arimasen", or "ja arimasen", and at any rate I made a mistake, because you don't use "janai desu" for verbs. Anyhow, it means "I'm not very skillful at Japanese."

I suppose I am one of a tiny group here who can speak Chinese, even though it is the most widely spoken language in the world. Funny how few foreigners learn Chinese as a second language. (It is my first language, along with English, if any of you are wondering.)

prof sprout - Feb 16, 2003 6:26 am (#352 of 658)

Denise S. now I recognize janai, I always separated it as ja nai, or put it at the end of a noun or verb, I never realized it was one word. When writing in kanji and hiragana, I hate that there are no spaces. When we have to do dialogs, Words that I don't know I run together, but I speak fast enough no one notices Smile

Lexicon Steve - Feb 16, 2003 2:44 pm (#354 of 658)

Grand Rapids? Did someone say Grand Rapids?

I live in Grand Rapids. South end, just off Division Ave. in Cutlerville. So the Lexicon website is right here in your home town.

So do we have a Lexicon party one of these days?

kabloink! - Feb 16, 2003 3:08 pm (#355 of 658)

Soudns great to me-I live right downtown, on Lookout Hill, Belknap Lookout, or whatever you want to call it. Just up the hill from Griff's ice House-I can see the river/junction from my backyard!

raingirl3179 - Feb 16, 2003 7:25 pm (#356 of 658)

I'm Jenn, 24, recent HP fan. I have a BA in literature and love discussing HP from that standpoint. I want to be a high school English teacher and write my own novels. AIM is Nimfalma. Looking forward to discussing Harry Potter!

Istari Jones - Feb 17, 2003 6:49 am (#357 of 658)

Steve...Did you say you're having a Lexicon party at your house, and you're inviting the whole world????? I hope you have enough parking ...and bathrooms!!

(Just kidding!! Just kidding!!)

Ari - Feb 19, 2003 11:15 am (#358 of 658)

Well,if Steve doesn't, I might. :^) ... and after we move we'll actually have enough bathrooms...

As much as I love this forum, I'd really like to have some "actual live humans" to debate Harry Potter with. It's not that I am not trying to "convert " people! My friends and relatives (including, but not limited to my numerous nieces and nephews) keep getting the books for all real or imagined "events" in their lives, but most just put them on the shelf and DON'T TOUCH THEM!! (Sorry for shouting) Bad people, really bad people. They should start shutting their ears in oven doors,grrr.... :^)

I can commiserate, Ari.. it took me some doing but I actually got my mom to finally read the series. Now that she understands the obsession, it's cool and we actually talk about everything. I tell her things that are discussed on this forum. heh. She gets a kick out of it.

Wow. Harry Potter bringing people and families, closer.

:wide grin:

Norbert - Feb 20, 2003 1:21 pm (#360 of 658)

Ari, I know what you mean. My family has read the series but they are not into dissecting everything the way we are on this site. My sister gave me the HP/CoS Triva game. It is so cool but I don't have anyone to play it with. Maybe we could get an online game going.

I wanted to say something to everyone.

Kip and Steve have created something so wonderful that everyone can share. And it's not just their creating this site that has made it so special, it's coming here and knowing you've got a few friends (even if you've never actually seen them) and everyone here is just kind and thoughtful, I really love it here! Thanks everyone! (I hope I didn't sound too emotional, here. Oops! *nervous smile*) Well, I'm finished, I'll probably come back later, bye! (hee hee!)

I've been reading the lexicon and the forum for months now but only started posting recently. I am 20 years old, female and live in Halifax in the UK but spend most of my time at university in Leeds. Am moving down to London in a few months when i finish uni and can't wait. I started reading the HP books after the first movie came out - would you believe I only went to watch it to see what all the fuss is about! Now i am obsessed. My family are very unimpressed cause I'm 21 soon and all i want for my birthday is the box set of the first four books in hardback! I have my watch set to count down the days till June 21st (is that really sad?????????)

I'm a woman, late 20s, married, no kids, in the northeast US. I'm an avid reader of just about all types of fiction. I was a bit of a latecomer to HP-mania -- read the first book just before the first movie came out, the rest of them this past fall. I didn't "resist" them because they were popular, the books just weren't especially on my radar screen. Initially, I enjoyed them as entertaining and well-written, but got more deeply interested after PoA, and after GoF became pretty obsessed. My husband and friends have read and liked the books, but none quite shares my ... er ... enthusiasm. I love the friendliness, humor and intelligent discussion on this forum, and the wealth of info in the Lexicon. Have been lurking for awhile, but recently started posting.

I like reading harry potter (what earth-shattering news, huh!) and i personally find harry a little too...um...moody? silly? i don't think i like harry hinself as much as ron. like reading and i like writing, i've written a lot of stories and poems, gotten them published too. first began when i was 8, first got published (a story about a squirrel, in a children's mag) when i was 10. am i boasting too much? yknow what, reading over this, i get the feeling that i've got a lot of attitude...but i just need to know how to go about here. i mean, once i become a regular, i'll have no problem. at the mo, i'm totally confused. hmmmmmmmmm.

To Hedwig,

Welcome to the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum. I am curious about something. Back on 16 October 2002 (two weeks after this Forum was begun), a poster who chose the username Hedwig also posted to this thread at #65.

Could this be you! The similarities are interesting!

If you have problems finding this post, please email me and I will be glad to help you! Or you can use the procedure that I provide in post #389 which is two posts below this one.

To all others who have recently posted to this thread, welcome!

kimiraikkonen - Mar 4, 2003 6:55 am (#387 of 658)

Kip, I think one needs edit access to view whatever is in that link above.

I do not understand why you feel that edit access is necessary to view what is in that link above. Could you please explain why you feel that?

The post was addressed to Hedwig and should not affect anyone else. I have removed the link if that was what was the problem.

However if someone needs to view posts in the early post number like the one above, do the following:

1. At the top of this page is an icon that says "To Top"

2. Click on this icon and that action will take the view to the beginning of this thread.

3. At the bottom of the posts on that new page will be an icon that says "More"

4. Click on that icon and your action will take you to the next page of erly posts.

5. Continue clicking on the "More" icon on each following page until you reach #65 or whatever early post you need to view.

This procedure works on all large threads.

Hello, I stumbled accross the lexicon two days or so ago when on the search for some HP information Smile I'm glad to find a place where there are many people who like me are interested in the details of HP. Unfortunately the people around me seem not to appreciate it when I want to discuss theories about HP for hours..., I guess I'll do a lot of reading (in the forums) first to see if I can participate in any ongoing discussion, but just knowing that there is s side for adults is great already Smile

Oh, I guess I should introduce myself... I'm a german student, female, love HP and LotR but do not like to compare them as they are "two different pairs of shoes"... Nice to meet you all Smile Laurelin

Rosariana - Mar 8, 2003 9:21 am (#393 of 658)

After being a forum member since December, I am finally posting here! I don't know what's prevented me from doing so earlier. My name is not really Rosariana, I made that name up. I am a sixteen year old female from New England. I'm a junior in High School, but I'm taking college-level English classes. I love languages, theatre and art. I have been learning Spanish for six years. Harry Potter has inspired me to take Latin, and I love it!

I used to be one of thise people that thought Harry Potter was for young children until a friend lent me a copy of the first book about a year and a half ago. The rest, as they say, is history!

I love the Lexicon and this forum! It's a great place to share ideas and not be ashamed of my HP addiction!

Not even Harry could get me to take another Latin class...(bellum bellum belli bello bello...aghhh!)

Tommie - Mar 9, 2003 3:19 pm (#395 of 658)

If you want to go to University you have to know another language. Oh, no...I couldn't stand French, it was too unfamiliar to me (no offense to everyone who's French). I wouldn't mind learning Ancient Egyptian though.

Oddly enough, I've been on this forum a while and never properly introduced myself. My first post was "LOL Pyro, 'Momma jokes'!" on the Things never to do/say to Lord Voldie thread.

Well, better introduce then...stuff is in the info part. Wink Great intro, eh?

Hello, I too have been lurking around this forum (I really love this forum) for quite sometime and have never properly introduced myself. I am officially a soccer mom, to a son and triplet daughters . I first read the HP books after listening to an interview with JK on public radio. I wanted to read the books before my then 4 year read them and I became hooked. Then I got my husband to read them too. (For Sam) I grew up in New York city but live in sleepy Conneticut. I have read the books several times and am trying to fill the next 3 months, one week, and half hour with all background and support materials about Harry Potter. I only recently opened this thread so I figured I add my bit. Thanks to all of you for being so articulate and thoughtful.

Mrs. Sirius - Mar 14, 2003 8:49 pm (#398 of 658)

PS I have read all the books in Spanish so maybe we can get a chat on the Spanish version sometime.

OK I have finally dared to venture on this thread! My real name is not azi (surprise surprise) but Laura. I'm currently 15 but 16 in April! I should really mention the fact I'm female. I live in Huddersfield, England and was born there so I'm a Yorkshire lass. People call me hippy when I walk down the street and I go to Explorers (aka Scouts, Ventures etc.)

Penny Lane. - Mar 15, 2003 8:51 pm (#400 of 658)

I've been here for a while and I guess its about time I posted here. Okay, I'm 20 yrs old, Grand Rapids, MI. I first read Harry Potter when GoF came out, my mom brought me SS because it was on sale. I finished that, and got CoS. Two days later I was begging for PoA. When I got PoA I stayed up all night reading it. The next day I went to the bookstore and came home with GoF. At which point I found out that that was the last one that I could read at that time, and promptly got depressed about rushing through. So I started over. Oh, right... I go to college, and I am a waitress. I'm still trying to decide on a major, so don't ask, unless you want a long drawn out answer. :-)

Caitlin McCoy - Mar 18, 2003 7:35 pm (#407 of 658)

Too bad H.P. Logic doesn't work in the Muggle's Real World...otherwise I'd be employed.

Mordicus Egg - Mar 19, 2003 1:53 pm (#408 of 658)

I'm not Mordicus Egg, but I play him on the Muggle Internet.

My real name is Jeff. I am 34 years old. I'm originally from New York State, but I've been living in Massachusetts for the past three years. I'm a Mental Health Counselor; my profession was what led me to Harry Potter.

In 2000 I was assigned to work with a pre-teenaged boy. This boy was somewhat difficult to engage in therapy, but the one subject he would talk about was Harry Potter. I'd been hearing about how Harry was becoming increasingly popular for some time, but had not yet made the time to check out what all the fuss was about. After the second session with my client talking about Wizards, and also Muggles and Hogwarts --whatever they were, I thought that I'd better go to the library on the way home from work and check out the first Harry Potter book, just so I'd have something better to say than, "Sounds like you really like Harry Potter!"

I figured that I'd just read the first book, so that I could make progress with my client. Well, I'd say that I read the first 20-30 pages for the client. After that, it was all me! I couldn't believe the humor, pathos, richness of the characters and the setting. I think I slept about three hours that first night! I was through PoA about 10 days after I started P/SS. I went through withdrawal prior to GoF's release, luckily I only had to wait a few months. I wish I knew then that we'd be waiting three years for OoP!

Well, it's been a continual obsession ever since. I re-read the books in order, only taking time off if I can find an engrossing read.

Just 94 more days! I think I'll make it! See you at the line party!

Marè - Mar 19, 2003 4:22 pm (#409 of 658)

Hey Mordicus, you can't stop there! What happened to the boy?

Denise S. - Mar 19, 2003 7:40 pm (#410 of 658)

If he still needs therapy, maybe he might get some here, provided he still likes Harry Potter ;-)

Pinky - Mar 19, 2003 7:57 pm (#411 of 658)

Hello everyone. I bookmarked this site ages ago, but never actually started exploring it until a few days ago. I've spent the last several days desperately reading every thread I could. Since most of them are quite long, it's taking me quite a while! I'm female, married, 25, and live in Canada.

I've been completely blown away by the theories on this board. I've chosen my handle to reflect that. Do any of you like the "Pinky and the Brain" cartoon? I feel like all of you people are like the Brain - really intelligent, finding clues, making logical assumptions. I, on the other hand, am Pinky - bumbling along trying not to make too much of a mess while trying to understand what you all are saying. I'm still a little unsure about the whole squid thing....

Anyway, I'm glad to be here, even if I can't think of anything intelligent to post!

shepherdess - Mar 19, 2003 8:15 pm (#412 of 658)

Welcome, Pinky. This is an impressive forum, isn't it? It can be overwhelming at first because we have spent so much time brainstorming and hammering out theories that it sounds like we know almost as much as JKR. But there's no guarantee that she will use any of the theories we have so logically figured out. We could be wrong about everything. How smart will we look then? Please don't feel intimidated-I'm sure your thoughts are just as good as anyone else's. Jump in and join the fun!

Denise S. - Mar 19, 2003 8:19 pm (#413 of 658)

Oh, Pinky, if you don't know where to start, my advice would be start with the thread titled "Slytherin Prefect, show me the evidence that Dumbledore is the Giant Squid!" Very excellent thread...and a nice club to join! ;-)

Welcome everyone!

Mordicus what a great story. You'll fit in nicely here, among the patients of St.Mungo's. We could use the help. Wink

And Pinky! Have no fear- pretty soon you'll be swimming along with the rest of us (and the giant squid).

I am a new member of this forum. I am a Danish girl from Denmark and I am 16 years old. I have read all 4 harry potter books in Danish - and now I am waiting on the 5. but as you all know it is taken a lot of time to translate a book to another language (in my case Danish) so I have to wait VERY long time for it.

just want to say hallo to all members out there, and i am happy to know that it is not just me who is a huge harry potter fan

Hi, troops! In response to overwhelming demand (okay, okay, just Matt Allair!), here's a bit about me:

Tall, dark and handsome Smile
(Actually: tall with huge feet, mousy blond with the odd red streak, and average-looking)

Hailing from Bolton, Lancashire1, UK

37, recent Harry Potter convert (duh!), keen archer (1st Class, bordering on Bowman Class), would-be writer and computer programmer, long-time SF fan (currently in possession of over 700 books), keen modelmaker.

I took the Sorting Test on the HP website and was sorted into Gryffindor, and I work at the Bolton branch of Reality (formerly White Arrow) - with a bunch of lads I'd place mostly in Slytherin!
(There's one or two I'd put in Hufflepuff, but the rest are certainly not "unafraid of toil", and as for bravery, wit and learning - naaah!)

I speak Assembler, C, PASCAL, BASIC, COBOL, UNIX, HTML and Technobabble...and, occasionally, English.

Oops, nearly forgot - I love cats! I'm owned by a beautiful 3-year-old British Shorthair Tricolour Tortoiseshell called Tigger (yes, I know Tigger of Winnie the Pooh fame was a boy and all torties are queens, but if you'd seen her as a kitten you'd know the name fits!).

1 Anyone prattling on about "Greater Manchester" in my hearing will get the hiding they deserve, I promise you. ;>

W J - Mar 23, 2003 12:30 pm (#426 of 658)

More cat lovers are always welcome, so it's nice to have you on board. 'Hope you have fun, Karl.

Matt Allair - Mar 23, 2003 8:08 pm (#427 of 658)

Karl, I had a feeling we'd get along. I'm two years younger than your 37, also an avid SF book reader and collector of SF Books and Pulp Magazines from the 30's to 50's, and a reader of a lot of contemporary Science Fiction as well.

I'm a huge cat lover as well! Being that I am from the San Francisco, CA area, and therefore not qualified to make any comments about "Greater Manchester", I won't!

Karl, if you see this please take a look in the Fan Fiction discussion thread, because I have a question for you, a creative proposition.

My name is Corinne Fletcher, I am 14 and I live in Portland, Oregon. I play the violin, piano, and french horn, as well as being in choir. I love animals, small children, drawing, and (obviously) fantasy books. My favorite authors are Lewis Carrol, Victor Hugo, Tolkien(and no, I am not one of those stupid, annoying people who only likes The Lord of The Rings because they think Orlando Bloom is cute), and JKR. I also like math and chocolate. Basically, I love fine arts and I'm a nerd.

Congratulations. What's Greenhead?

Alaria Relladrem - Mar 24, 2003 11:01 pm (#435 of 658)

Hello. I'm a 17 year old girl who lives in Texas. I'm basically a half-homeschooler, or rather, I do school by correspondence. In the homeschooling community where I live, liking the Harry Potter books is frowned upon. Thus it is rather difficult to discuss HP with most of the people I know. Fortunately, my two best friends do like the books.

I love to read all kinds of books, especially fantasy. Also, I am obsessed with writing, and can't go more than a couple of days without it. However, I have no plans to become a full-time professional writer. I'll simply have to make time to write and do the other tasks that I need to do as well. At least, that's what I tell myself. In reality, I often get so caught up in stories I'm writing that I forget to do my other work!

When I go to college, I may major in biochemistry. So far, my favorite subject in school has been chemistry, though biology is a close second.

By the way, I am an absolutely weird person. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Jennifer Raye- Mar 25, 2003 2:29 am (#436 of 658)

Well done azi, you'll love it!

Hi all. I'm a 24 year old female named Jess. I'm originally from south Georgia, went to college in Nashville, TN, lived in DC for a year following graduation, and moved to Durham, NC in August to be closer to my fiance. I was introduced to the Potter books just over a year ago, and have become borderline obesessed with them. Thanks to Kip and Steve for creating the lexicon and forum so that we can all be crazy together.

Erm, welcome all!

Hi my name is Sarah and I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I am twelve(almost thirteen), and I love Harry Potter! I've known about the lexicon for a while but I haven't really posted much. My favorite author(besides JK of course) is Tamora Pierce. I like art and theater and history too!

Gina R Snape - Mar 29, 2003 9:27 am (#442 of 658)

I can't remember if I ever introduced myself here. So here goes.

My name is Gina. I'm 33 years old (will be 34 end of April). I live in New York City. I am a social worker--I run a homeless shelter and teach at a university.

I first got into HP by watching the first movie on cable about 8 times. Then I broke down in December and bought CoS. After that I was hooked. I started prowling around the internet. I knew there was this huge HP fanbase. I remembered seeing all the merchandise in the stores and thinking it was cute. But after I got hooked, I started searching around the internet wondering if there were others as obsessed with Snape as I am. Sure enough, we are out there. And in here, to my great pleasure!

I'm having so much fun here. I check the Lexicon Forum every day now unless something comes up (like getting a new tattoo last weekend! Someone please stop me before I get the Slytherin coat of arms on my shoulder. I've already managed to get Xena's chakram subtley included in the design on my left arm). All you crazed fans should definitely come to St. Mungos on the fanfic forum. Dessert is on us! (Well, mostly those in the Fans of Trelawney room at this point)

I'll be back in London in June, just in time for the release of OoP. And I'm thrilled beyond belief. Oh, and I speak German too, for to add to the earlier discussion.

Ok, well, enough about me then.

I've been lurking here for quite a while, and I figured I should register and introduce myself. I'm an 18 year old girl from Massachusetts, and I first discovered Harry Potter about three years ago. School and work takes up a lot of my time (I'm majoring in history and education, and waitressing on the weekends,) but I love to read: Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings especially. Hello! I'm new here! I'm a 17 year old female from Canada. I live on Vancouver Island, just off the west coast of British Columbia. Wow, so at least two of you are from California? I have some friends living there. It's really rainy here right now, but I've been told it is technically a rain forest. Yay... I don't think I've been properly dry for a while now... I'd like to live in Ireland or maybe Japan. But I kind of like it here actually. I think I'll travel first before I make a decision. Ja mata!

Shinsei Asahi - Apr 12, 2003 9:59 pm (#460 of 658)

Wow, I've just scanned the first 100 or so posts and I've only seen one other Canadian! *sobs* I feel so alone... But it is really cool how diverse this forum is. A close friend of mine(who looks EXACTLY like an older version of Harry) is from new Zealand. I should tell him about this forum, considering the many NZ natives on here. Oh yeah, and my name isn't really Shinsei-or Danica for that matter, but close. I also have a twin sister. We aren't as mischivous as the WEaley twins but do love jokes and being silly. I'll try and tone it down here for those who wanna keep this a serious forum...oh, and those people really shouldn't visit some of my websites. The one listed under my profile is close to safe though. Ciao!

Kip Carter - Apr 13, 2003 2:35 am (#461 of 658)

Saralinda - Apr 17, 2003 6:40 am (#463 of 658)

Oh, dear ...

OK, I'm Kayte ("Saralinda" is our boss cat), age -- let's just say I qualify for senior discounts. I'm married and a multiple grandma in scenic Pittsburgh, PA. My son got me reading HP in September of 2001. Now the whole extended family (save one holdout daughter on Long Island) are hooked thoroughly. I'm a writer and an editor, and I really appreciate the mature tone of the posters here, even the very youngest.

Hm, what else? Oh, right -- seven cats (four of them black), one enormous dog, also black. When I'm not obsessing on Harry, I obsess on Holmesiana, grand opera, Shakespeare, old-fashioned pen-and-paper-and-dice role playing games, and true crime. Um, and I really like Eminem, which freaks my kids out totally.

It's wonderful to meet all of you!

There seem to be loads of new people here. Welcome. I guess we have to do something before OoP. It feels like the St. Mungo's waiting room.

What's with all the Yorkshire posse? nice one.

I thought I would stop clogging up the Why is everyone English thread and come on here for a moment.

I am British. I have a British passport. I am also from the north of England. I have Irish, Scottish and Welsh friends. I particularly enjoyed living in Wales with a Scottish house-mate and Irish boyfriend(now ex). I always actively encourge people to visit the whole of the UK. I sometimes annoy people at work with this enthusiastic "encouraging".

I believe that I get this trait from my mum who has been known to start conversations with folks from different nations in the queues (that means lines) at Florida's Disneyworld on the same theme.

Ok, I have got that off my chest now. Thankyou.

PS I think it's time that Wales/somebody Welsh got a mention in the books.

Welcome to the Forum. I noticed that you are from Pittsburgh. That is one of my favorite cities being that my daughter and son-in-law met each other at Carnegie Mellon as undergrads and both have masters from there. They lived on Kentucky Avenue while there.

I notice that you also feel that you are one of our mature wizards. That may be true; however I hope that I still have the honor to say that I am the oldest one on the Forum. Presently 62, I hit 63 next month. I know I should be at least the oldest grandfather here.

When do people use the chat room?

Kip Carter - Apr 17, 2003 8:22 pm (#476 of 658)

The Chat Room on the Forum is an extra that World Crossing apparently thinks is hardly used. It can be very enjoyable; however you have to have patience in finding someone there. Some times there are a dozen or so in the Chat Room for long period of time and then there are long periods of times when there is no one in the Chat Room.

We have set up a thread to let me know when someone is in the Chat Room; however the information is only as good as the person has the patience to stay if he/she is there alone. It is tricky to keep talking to yourself so that the Chat Room will not time out on you!

But have fun!

kimiraikkonen - Apr 18, 2003 7:39 am (#477 of 658)

Saralinda, perhaps you could enlighten me on what is meant by scenic Pittsburgh? I have never been to the USA, and my impression of the cities are based on what I read, and that of Pittsburgh is "hell with the lid off".

Saralinda - Apr 18, 2003 1:23 pm (#478 of 658)

Hi, kimiraikkonen!

You said ‘Saralinda, perhaps you could enlighten me on what is meant by scenic Pittsburgh? I have never been to the USA, and my impression of the cities are based on what I read, and that of Pittsburgh is "hell with the lid off".’

Certainly! Pittsburgh was a nightmare throughout most of its history, because there were no controls on the steel mills and coal mines. I'm not a native, but I've seen film footage of this place with the skies black and scarlet from the smokestacks. Friends tell me how it was never truly night for the glow off the horizon, and never truly day because of the smoke hanging in the air.

After World War II the region cracked down on pollution in a big way. (Possibly related to this, most of the steel industry has abandoned the area.) Geography helped here; Pittsburgh is located along a steep four-river valley. A surprising amount of its terrain is just too rugged to build on, so there are these beautiful green areas even in the heart of downtown. Trees help cleanse the atmosphere efficiently, so the scrub-up has proceeded quickly.

We live twelve minutes from the Golden Triangle (the heart of the city, where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers unite to form the Ohio), and just a mile from the Ohio River itself, and yet our kids routinely saw deer (and some say the occasional bear cub) out the windows of their secondary school. The flow of the terrain means that streets bend and dip, and builders use some creative methods to construct houses.

Paradise, no. Scenic, absolutely! One of the reasons we moved here was the city's tendency to surprise us: We would be chugging along what looked like an industrial road and suddenly round a bend into a park or a steep hillside dotted with wildflowers.

Wow -- didn't mean to sound so much like a booster! It's not perfect, but it sure can be pretty. Smile

Saralinda - I have found that people are usually in the chat room around 10pm EST. This is not manadtory, just the time that I find people. Some days there are more then others, sometimes people come in earlier, sometimes later. Every now and then, I find people there during the day as well.

Kip - What do you mean by "World Crossing apparently thinks that it is hardley used?" I think the chat room on the main forum is used plenty, I find people there almost every night. Do they keep tabs on us?

Thanks for the reply Kip, I hope so, too. Wow, you're a writer, Saralinda?!? That's so cool! I want to be one and I'm presently "attempting" to write two stories and a bunch on fanfics(mostly anime), but whenver I write a chapter I read it and think "I can do better" and start all over again. Also also want to travel the the places in my stories to get more of a feel for it. I figure I'll probably finish one by thirty. I need to live more before I can write something good. I'm told you are supposed to write what you know, after all. Wow, sounds like Pitsburgs very pretty! I spent almost twelve of my years in a very small town called Tumbler Ridge(a coal mining town) in the middle of the Northern Rockies. I'd see bear, deer, cougars, etc. quite often. Great place to grow up. And here there are a lot of rabbits(thanks to parents letting their bunnies free after Easter), turtles, snakes, many deer, seagulls and other birds. I don't like the starlings much. One attacked me and they are everywhere since they have no natural predators. They came over from England, or so I am told. I've had three cats in my life, Malika(f/tabby), Dahja(m/black with a crooked tail, whom we were told was a girl but wasn't), and my first cat since age 5, Cotton Ball(female part persian who we had to leave with our neighbors when moving to Grande Prairie, Alberta and she ran off and is still lost.) We had to give away the former two cats from bad allergies. Can't help it when you can't breathe. Cruel. I'm sorry, I blab too much. This is a fantastic site! I know what it's like to have to go through every book fifty times over to get every bit of information possible. I also know what it's like to fall asleep while doing so and have your face collide with the keyboard. Very painful. Coffee is a necessity. Later!

Hello everybody,

I've been lurking for quite a while and thought it was time I started contributing; this is a really neat place! About me: I'm sixteen, female, from Minnesota (Go Twins!), and I've been reading Harry Potter for about 3 years now. My real name is Johanna, Jo for short. I should go to bed now, but I'll be posting more soon. Nice to meet you all! Smile

I'm Holly from the middle of nowhere PA. I'm 17, a junior in high school, and I can't wait to get out of here to travel the world (after college). I want to become an anthropologist or biologist. I enjoy reading, singing, eating (who doesn't?), watching movies, hanging out friends, etc.

My name is Leanne, I'm 16 (17 in 17 days!) Female and from Aberdeen, Scotland. I became obsessed with HP basically right after the second book did. I got reading and got addicted! I LOVE it but believe me there are very few people I know who are as enthusistic about it as I am so it's great to be amongst like-minded people! I hope to become a regular member and that I can make some good net friends! My MSN's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Blessed be Leanne xxxxxxxx

Ticker - Apr 26, 2003 4:50 pm (#498 of 658)

I haven't posted here in a long time, so let me just re-introduce myself - 32 y.o. female from the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. I work as a clinic nurse and I recreate by gardening, rock-climbing, and of course obsessing about Harry Potter's amazing world (not necesarily in that order). I recently found out that I am pregnant & unless you want a lecture on how ambivalent I am about it, don't ask me how I'm doing. I'm fine - really.

Let me also extend a warm welcome to all those new posters (& lurkers too) - especially those from up north, North America. You know who you are - you frequently say "eh" (which means 20 different things, depending on the context) and when you say "a boat" and "about" it sounds the same. When you get a chance, come on over to the Fan-Fiction Forum & I'll buy you all a butter-beer!

Ticker - Apr 26, 2003 4:59 pm (#499 of 658)

Woah - hey - just had to say ummmm - well, nothing really. I just wanted to be the 500th post.

kimiraikkonen - Apr 26, 2003 5:53 pm (#500 of 658)

Wow... you got the 500th post. So what? Please don't post just for the sake of doing so.

I'll reintroduce myself as well. Tay Li Hang, 15, male, Singapore, MSN [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Congratulations, Ticker, on personally creating a new Harry Potter fan of the future! I guess they can be a gardener and rock-climber too, but the 'obsessing about Harry Potter' hobby is the most important thing to teach them. Wink

Oh and being the 500th poster on this thread is cool, too. Smile

Hello! My name's Isobel, I'm 16 and from England. I love books and films (except "teen-movies" (yuk!)) and chocolate (who doesn't?!). I've only just discovered this site, but I've loved HP since book one!

Xela - Apr 30, 2003 2:57 pm (#514 of 658)

I have been around since late October and I think it is time I introduce myself: My name is Alejandra, I am 33 year old, single, from Austin Texas originally from Mexico; English is my second language. I am a teacher and discover the Lexicon by accident while looking for vocabulary. I love the Harry Potter series and was so happy not to be alone anymore. I am very humble by the level of intelegince on this forum. I have been corrupted by television and only rediscover my love of reading after reading the Harry Potter books. I was in shock at first; there was so much information to read in the Lexicon and here. I wanted to read it all. As this is my first experience with a forum, it took me a while to figure out that I could become a member and that threads that I had read will no longer be marked as new. I will probably not post often; I am not as eloquent as so many here and writing is one of my weeknesses; I am also shy by nature and a loner but I read almost everything. I come here so often that you have become part of my family and I guess I wanted to become part of the Lexicon family. As you can notice I am also bad at punctuation and I will die without a spell check. I also wanted to thank Steve for starting the Lexicon and the forum and Kip and Denise P. for all their hard work on the forum; know that it is all appreciated. Sorry about the long post.

Marè - Apr 30, 2003 3:03 pm (#515 of 658)

Welcome to the forum Xela. Please don't let shyness or problems with the language stop you from posting. You say you feel we are a part of your family, than please give us a chance of getting to know you too! Smile

Happy posting!

Pleased to meet all of you, and happy to have stumbled onto this forum, where everyone seems so friendly. =) Actually, I found this website a long time ago, but haven't been here for quite some time... so didn't know there is a forum here now. I'm glad I decided to look for this site again. Thank you, Steve for this wonderfully informative and fun site. Once again, hello! ^_^

Nolwenn - May 2, 2003 8:07 am (#524 of 658)

I really had no clue as to where to put this post but I felt I had to write it anyway : today the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum is 7 months old ! Almost a thousand people have come here and more than 500 have became members ! I haven't been able to come on the forum for 5 weeks and I am amazed (and even a bit scared, I must admit)at the number of threads and at how many people have arrived on board. I know a lot of people are like me and don't post much, whatever the reason (shyness ? lack of time ?) but it still feels like one big family. So welcome to all the newbies (I'm feeling exactly like one right now !) and have fun !

Rosariana - May 2, 2003 1:39 pm (#525 of 658)

Jackie !Fast - May 2, 2003 5:02 pm (#527 of 658)

Ahh, formal introductions. I've been posting around for about a month now, and I must say that I feel so comfortable on this thread that I'm starting to be a Harry Potter obsessor again. I first read Harry Potter books four years ago (right when PoA came out), and I was crazy for Harry Potter for that entire year, when I was a regular at the Amazon.com message board (is anyone else here an old member of that site?) Anyways, once I got into high school I was too busy to be a big fan, but now that OotP is coming, I've decided to get involved again. And I'm having sooo much fun!

Jackie Fast is my real name. I'm a 16 year old female, living in Seattle, Washington, USA. I have two cats and I speak Hebrew, aval ani lo yechola ledaber ivrit shotefet (translation: I'm not able to speak it fluently).

I would like to take this opporyunity to thank everyone at the forum; this is a perfect place to discuss HP, with other people who know it all by heart and speculate intellectually, without all the immature fan stuff that most other sites have. I can't wait to explore new theories when OotP comes out!

Gina R Snape - May 2, 2003 6:11 pm (#528 of 658)

Welcome, Jackie. And welcome...back!

I think we are all getting a little crazy waiting for OoP Day. This is definitely the perfect place to discuss it!

Mrs. Sirius - May 2, 2003 7:33 pm (#529 of 658)

Congratulations Ticker!! I promise I'll ask no questions. Welcome to all newcomers! Xena, relax your English is fine and we're fairly cordial here. I hope to see you in the Chat Room someday. I am planning to re-read the 4 books again in Spanish before the 21st, it would be nice to discuss with a native speaker (though admittedly my English is now better than my Spanish).

Nolwenn - May 3, 2003 1:53 am (#530 of 658)

Oh my ! I never meant to "steal your thunder" Kip ! I'm really sorry if it came out that way... I had just read those numbers and was still amazed over them but of course I should've mentioned my sources. My biggie !

kimiraikkonen - May 3, 2003 3:23 am (#531 of 658)

June, if you look above I posted that my real name is Tay Li Hang. Most people (in real life at least) call me Hang, so you can call me that. I don't mind kimiraikkonen, or kimi, but I prefer if people don't call me kim.

Marlene Baerman - May 3, 2003 12:23 pm (#532 of 658)

Hello everyone! I'm Marlene, and I'm a new member. I live in Phoenix Arizona, and I'm obsessed with Harry Potter. Actually, one of my close friends calls me a "new convert" to HP, because up until a few months ago, I wasn't at all interested. Shameful as it is, my friend got me to read the first book by winning a bet we had made. If I had known the sheer brilliance of these books, no persuation would have been needed. I look forward to being a member here!

And though I'm a newcomer myself, welcome to all other newcomers here. ^_~

Gabrielle D - May 4, 2003 10:16 am (#537 of 658)

Wow... I am poster 537...

I figured I posted so long ago, I might as well re-post. My name is Gabrielle and the "D" is from my real last name, not Fleurs little sisters name. I am from New York, Northern Westchester to be exact. Well, not entirly exact. I live in a small(ish) town in Westchester but that shall remain nameless. I live with my mom, sister (when she isn't at school in the University of Rhode Island) and my brother. I am the middle child.

Hm... alittle bit about me... Well, my spelling is horrible (which I'm sure most of you have noticed), and I love to write. I am in High School, a freshmen. My birthday is November 11th (1987) so that makes me 15. I tend to ramble and sometimes I dont make sence the first time I write things.

I have a cat (named Scribble). She is a silver tabby. I also have a bird (named Hobbes). He is a Canary.

I like the theater, history, films (Im big on Moulin Rough and Chicago, but two of my all time favorites are The Iron Giant and The Emporer's New Groove), reading (besides JKR, I really like Nick Hornby), Calvin and Hobbes (yes, the comic) and music. I'm not particulary an Eminem fan like some of you are (about 100 posts ago... I think), I like rock alot better but I'm no stranger to classical, pop and country.

Well, now that you all know pretty much everything about me, I'd like to welcome all the new members and thank Kip, Steve and Denise P for keeping such a cool Lexicon!

Gabrielle D

Xela - May 4, 2003 1:16 pm (#538 of 658)

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. My English is ok; I have been in the US since 1982. I do not post much because I am not good with words and awful at writing. Now that I have introduce myself, I will try to contribute more instead of just talking to myself when I read others posts. Thanks again; it is great to be part of the Harry Potter Lexicon family.

Hi everybody! This is my first post. I am 20 years old, from Indiana, and I just love Harry Potter! I'm kind of new to it compared to most people, as I got hooked on the books only a few months ago. I actually thought they were just a kiddie fad until I caught the movie SS on HBO and just fell in love with it, and had to read the books. Now I'm addicted. I really like reading this forum, it is really interesting and also fun to read!

I really hope to have fun as a member here!

Hi I'm Evan. Cool web site. Lots to read.

Starseeker - May 6, 2003 1:47 pm (#545 of 658)

Yes, here I am again. Wink I was here a few months ago, but then kind of disappeared from the forum until now, and since everyone's demanding I introduce myself... well, here I am re-introducing myself. Smile

I'm a female from Jacksonville, Florida, USA. I just turned 18 on April 2 (making me an Aries and proud of it) and will soon be graduating from high school and entering Jacksonville University this fall to major in Elementary Education (yes, I hope to become a teacher). Smile

My interests include dragons (as you can probably tell from my pic), horses, sharpshooting (a recent hobby, actually), American football, history, and Lord of the Rings. And now my smart and manipulative friends have gotten me hooked on Harry Potter. Very Happy

I like most everyone in the books, however Draco and Lucius strike a cord of loathing in me. My favorite character would be, dare I say, Severus Snape, especially for his complexity and seemingly anti-hero role. The character I'm most like, so I'm told by many, is Hermione, from the book smarts to the self-confidence to the looks, even. Smile

You'll notice also from my pic that I favor Slytherin. I've picked that house as my own because, honestly, every on-line test I've taken has sorted me into all four houses at some point, making me a bit like Harry in that the Sorting Hat has seemed to have difficulty placing me in a house due to my possession of all the houses' main traits. Wink Overall, though, I tend to be very ambitious about whatever I set out to do and demand nothing short of excellence from myself (nope, not a perfectionist at all... whatever gave you that idea? Wink ), so Slytherin it is. Smile Although, I can happily and confidently assure you that I'm not going to turn evil anytime soon, and that I'm probably one of the more friendly Slytherins you'll meet. Smile

Anyway, thank you, everyone, for the warm welcomes so far. Very Happy

Celestina W. - May 6, 2003 3:56 pm (#546 of 658)

Hey Starseeker, I just had to mention that I have the same birthday as you! I turned sixteen. Hope you had a great day!

J Smith-Capp - May 6, 2003 7:30 pm (#547 of 658)

Hi I'm Jack 35 y/o live in NY

I just got into the Harry Potter series and now have become a bit obsessed with it. I read all four books 5 times in 3 months. I'm not really a fan of these types of books but something about them really got to me. The good vs evil. choices and actions that have a causal effect in the future, and the memory of childhood friendships.

JKR really is one heck ( is that allowed ) of a mystery writer. Something of no apparent reasoning in Book 1 seems to explain EVERYTHING in Book 3. and so on.

I really have to thank everyone who has posted to this site. I came across things I had never thought of on my own.

kimiraikkonen - May 7, 2003 4:46 am (#549 of 658)

I'm a month and 9 days younger than Gabrielle, and one month 19 days younger than Alianora. (20/12/1987) I'm in 10th grade, so that would make me a sophomore in high school if I was in the US. But Gabrielle is a freshman. How does the education system work that results in this discrepancy?

Kip Carter - May 7, 2003 5:07 am (#550 of 658)

In each of the 50 states, there is a state department of education that sets the rules for education within that state. Most states have students begin their education with a kindergarten system of one or two years before they begin grade 1. Most states use a system of twelve grades in their public education system that is free to all students. Names normally assigned to the grades 9 through 12 in the last four years of this public education system are freshman (9th), sophomore (10th), junior (11th), and senior (12th).

The key to your question is at what age does a student begin the first grade. Most states use a cut-off date of 1 November. If the student is 6 years old by that date, he/she would have been able to start the first grade at the beginning of the school year which is normally in the middle of August before that 1 November date. So some students may be five and some may be six when they begin the first grade.

Making the system more complex is a number of issues that I will not completely cover:

Parents or the school may decide to hold a student back a year from their normal class for a lot of reasons. Some deal with the physical size of the student or health related problems and some deal with their academic ability. Students may also be advanced to a higher grade.

The bottom line is that birthdays have a lot of where a child is placed; however there are many other factors that are considered in the placement of a student in a particular grade.

I hope that answers your question.

Don't worry Jack, we allow "heck" ;-).

Gabrielle D - May 7, 2003 7:49 am (#552 of 658)

Nice to know there are so many people born within 2 months of me.

Let me explain why I am considered "old" for my grade (for Kimiraikkonen). In parts New York, where I live, the cut off age is December 2nd, (3 weeks and 2 days after my birthday). I went to kindergarten with I was 4. Basically, I didn't say one word my whole year. I was incredibly shy in kindergarten in first grade. So, even though my academics were OK, my mom decided to hold me back one year to make me more comfortable (at least that's what she tells me). There are quite a few kids in my grade older than me. Some were born in the summer of '87 but still only in 9th grade. I guess it just depends on the kid. My friend Joanna is exactly one year younger than me and we have all the same classes.

So... I hope that kind of cleared that up... Smile

Gina R Snape - May 7, 2003 4:37 pm (#553 of 658)

Oooh! Another New Yorker on the Lexicon. Great. Welcome.

Alianora - May 7, 2003 6:09 pm (#554 of 658)

Actually, there's a reason for me being in 9th as well. I went to a school where there was an extra grade between kindergarten and 1st grade, only for a few kids with birthdays after a certain point.

rettoP yrraH - May 7, 2003 7:31 pm (#555 of 658)

Pre1A? In my School we had PreKindergarten Kindergarten 1st 2nd....ect but I know that some schools in NY have a gread called Pre1A or something of the sort

Alianora - May 8, 2003 2:01 am (#556 of 658)

It was called T1 or something like that.

Penny Lane. - May 8, 2003 6:27 am (#557 of 658)

Well - as long as we are chatting in here about birthdays - mine is in June, but I was always the youngest in my class too, not sure why. I wasn't held back or anything, even though I wanted to be. Where I went to school, we had 3yr old preschool, 4 yr old preschool, kidnergarten, and then 1st grade. I never knew that some places had another grade between K and 1.

Anyway - Everyone who is new - Welcome!

Hello, My real name is Amy. I am a huge Harry Potter Fanatic, and have been for some time. I am from California, and 26. My b-day is febuary the 5th.

I've been dropping in here from time to time, and find this site wonderful but overwelming. There is SO much posted in one day, and you sort of feel like you've gotta read everything in the thread before posting any thoughts of your own. But everyone has such great input so I suppose (hope) you get used to that overwelming feeling after awhile. Nice to be around other fanatics anyway. :-)

Saralinda - May 8, 2003 6:11 pm (#560 of 658)

Welcome, Richard and Amy! I know what you mean, Amy. The sheer volume of posting here can be daunting, and it's substantial, not fluff.

My birthday is in December, and I am one of the youngest in my grade. I am a junior, but I have plenty of sophomore friends who are older than me and I have some junior friends that are a year or more older.

Marie E. - May 9, 2003 7:19 pm (#563 of 658)

For a point of reference on the school/age issue, here in Colorado Springs the cut-off date for starting school is September 15th. School usually starts in the middle of August, this year will be Aug. 19th. I had about three students this year start kindergarten at age four and half. So these kids will still be five when they go to first grade, but will turn six soon after. A friend in Anchorage told me that his son, whose birthday is in July, had to wait a year for kindergarten because their date is June 1st.

kimiraikkonen - May 10, 2003 1:44 am (#564 of 658)

Thank you for all your detailed answers. In Singapore the cutoff date is simple and easy to remember: 1st January. Everyone born in a year is in the same grade (not counting those that stay extra years or start later). The school year starts in January and ends in November, with short breaks in March and September and longer ones in June and December. I have yet to figure out the American school year, which I think starts in the middle of nowhere in the year and has a two month long summer break somewhere in there.

Pinky - May 10, 2003 4:27 am (#565 of 658)

Kimiraikkonen, your post made me laugh. Does our school system really look that confusing? I think the reason it "starts in the middle of nowhere in the year and has a two month long summer break somewhere in there" is because of how life was when schools were started up way back in the 1700's. Children needed to be available to work on the farms during the summer so that the family could raise animals and harvest crops for food. During the winter months, they weren't needed for farmwork, so they were allowed to go to school.

Welcome, Suzan! So glad you have officially introduced yourself. Have fun reading posts and contributing to them.

I am Denise S(tudent) (as opposed to Denise P[arent] who is a moderator [-er?] while I am not; figured I should clear that up). I am 19 and have just come home to MD from my first year of school in Randolph-Macon Woman's College in VA. My Harry Potter mania has developed to frightening proportions since I have become a member of this forum (the week after the 2nd movie came out) and am sorely disappointed that I must now view the forum via a 56K dial-up modem >:-(.

My other hobbies include reading, video games, travelling, atypical languages, and watching thunderstorms. I have a dog and a cat and a little brother who is now taller than me (:-/), and I am leaving for Japan in 7 days, and there are no words to describe how excited I am to be going :-).

Does this work ? I have just become a new member - I hope... For about six weeks, I thought I could join this group - until HP # 5 comes along, that is... You see, I live in Sweden, and I read the HP-books in both English and Swedish. The Swedish translation will not be released until next year - sad, but true - and as for the English books, it's the "adult pocket edition" I read. So which ever of these I first can lay my hands on, I will read - but until that; no HPL for me. I will not risk any spoilers ! As for myself, I'm a grown man, 37 years old - but I still like the Harry Potter-books; and why not, I'm the same age as J. K. Rowling... Well, now I'm going to post this message - my first ever - and I can only hope that it will work...

edit from Kip ~ So as not to confuse those of you who read this thread, I felt that I should add this to Sam's post. First, Sam is known for his humor on this Forum. Next, the Forum has experienced a number of posts around the "satanic" opinion surrounding the Harry Potter books to the point that it has become a joke to each of us on the Forum. When Kathy Korengold mentioned it in her post #578 above on this thread, Sam (rettoP yrraH) just could not hold back on his feelings and evaluation of the "satanic" label that some have attached to the Harry Potter series. Most who have been around this Forum and have read most of the threads would laugh at Sam's way of poking fun at the "satanic" issue. I hope that those who read Sam's post will laugh with Sam and the rest of us.

Hey, Kip just recently reminded me that I haven't posted on this thread yet, a fact that I completely overlooked in my zeal to share my HP-mania.

Hi! The "S" stands for Sarah, the "E" stands for Elizabeth (my middle name), and the "Jones" stands for...something...I forget! :-)

Anyway, I'm a 22 Oklahoma resident and have just finished my senior, though next to last, year of college at Oklahoma State University where I'm going after a double major in Cell & Molecular Biology and Microbiology. I hope to eventually become a Genetic Counselor as I love Genetics and, well, counseling, duh! I got hooked on Harry Potter after my little brother, the other Potter-fanatic in our family, forced me to watch Sorcerer's Stone with him, which peeked my interest, and then found the Lexicon which made HP an addiction (Thanks Steve!)!

It's been terrific to share my ponderings with other fans and take part in such interesting debates. Thanks guys!

S.E. Jones - May 14, 2003 8:02 pm (#583 of 658)

Nope, Penny, unfortunately not. But it does look just like one of my two cats, Kender. It was sent to me by a friend during a week in which I was really sick and rundown and I thought it just really fit my mental state at the moment so I put it up. It certainly does remind me of my Kender though, she sleeps curled around her food dish all the time. My other cat is named Precious because she has these big round eyes like those Precious Moments cartoons.

Penny, I think we came to the conclusion that Sarah's kitty was an expression of exhaustion from constantly staying up all night, rereading all the HP books. :-)

Welcome, Kathy. It's true, we are so varied in age here. I'm 34. I hear Kip is something like 190. ;-) You are not alone!

My husband is in the military, currently at home. In my spare time (bwahahahahahahahahaha) I read, cross stitch and sew cloth diapers. I am from California, I happen to live in Tennessee but I am NOT a native....no southern accent here unless I am faking it.

Uhm...I guess that sums it up Smile

Kathy Korengold - May 15, 2003 3:24 pm (#587 of 658)

Hi Denise P:

You have 8 children and have "spare time"? I am extremely impressed! I can hardly handle two - Justin is 9; Ashley is 7. I like to read in my "spare time", as well. Mostly, I'm busy with the kids activities; sports, girl/boy scouts, volunteering in the classroom, working six hours a day at my office nearby, and logging on the internet for my HP fix!

Hiya everyone, I'm new (I signed up yesterday) and I've really enjoyed reading the threads I've gotten to so far, even if I have added some kind of dumb posts to them...

I'm 25, and yet another female from California, and I started reading Harry Potter in late 2000 after I'd lived in England for about a year and a half. I read the books first, and then got the Stephen Fry audio tapes, which I continue to listen to incessantly.

Anyway, everyone here seems really nice and clever, so I'm looking forward to being part of the forum.

Sly Girl - May 18, 2003 10:47 pm (#597 of 658)

Interesting name too.... any story there?

Alden M. - May 18, 2003 11:20 pm (#598 of 658)

Not an interesting story! My aunt used to call me Wednesday (after Wednesday Addams) and I was born on a Wednesday, and one of my cats is named Wednesday. Riveting, isn't it?

Thank you for being nice about my postings! Well, I suppose that listening to the audio tapes a billion times each helps with memorizing random HP facts.

Hello Lexicon.

I've been reading you all for a very long while. This site along with The Leaky Cauldron have managed to keep entertained for hours and hours while I've been waiting for Order Of the Phoenix.

First, thank you for enforcing the "no net speak" rule. Trying to decipher that 'language' drives me insane! Since this site has been down, I've visited many other Harry Potter fan sites and none of them have this rule (including TLC in the comments section).

Now, I'll get on with it:

It soothes me to know because my boyfriend has been teasing me about what a nerd Harry is and i dont want to be the only one thinking he's amazing! Anyway, I'm Ing Hui, 18 female from Malaysia. And i'm shielding my computer from my boyfriend's gaze before he burst into another fit of laughter about what a dork i am! URGH.

Kip Carter - Jun 14, 2003 2:52 am (#611 of 658)

Welcome. Ing Hui, to the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum. First of all, I feel for you in what you said about your boyfriend. I am a 63-year-old grandfather who happens to be a Host on this Forum. I just released your post from the moderated status. Please click on my name at the top left of this post and the new page will take you to a page about who I am. I am proud to say that I enjoy the Harry Potter series.

Tell him that if he really love you to accept your challenge to read all four books with a clear and unbiased mind. If he does that, he will soon find that the books were not necessary written for children, but for JKR herself. If he does it with an unbiased mind, I believe that he will be fighting you for Book 5 when it is released on June 21st. Make sure he starts with Book 1 and reads them in order.

I am not trying to cause a split in your relationship, but if he is not willing to do that, maybe he is not the type of friend you need. You should never feel embarassed by reading something or discussing something that you like. You can read through this Forum and you will find that we have a very close and supportive family worldwide, including Malaysia.

Again, thank you for having the courage to post and welcome!

It's nice; this Forum works normally again - but now I have only one week left to be here ! And there is something I would like to share with you all - although I'm not sure this is the proper place to do so... And I don't expect you to believe me, but I swear it's the truth ! Many years ago, probably before even J.K.R. knew about Harry Potter, I (yes, me), started to write a book about a boy who was going to a boarding school for magicians ! I only wrote six chapters - then I run out of imagination - but IF I had been able to finish that book; then it would have been I who had wrote "Harry Potter" ! How about that...?

Miss Malaprop - Jun 15, 2003 4:23 pm (#617 of 658)

Hi all!

I’m so glad the Forum’s back! (Although it seemed to have a relapse yesterday). I didn’t know how much I loved it till I couldn’t get my daily fix. I thought I’d do the polite thing and introduce myself before posting elsewhere. I’ve been content to mainly observe quietly since joining...uh...6 months ago(!), but I decided I’d like to join in more, especially with this growing knot in my stomach that I hope will go away after the 21st! It’s not helped by the fact that I work in the book section of a department store and have been taking OoP preorders all week!

Caput Draconis - Jun 15, 2003 4:32 pm (#618 of 658)

Hello, my dear - I've no doubt the pain will go away in 5 days or so, but until then, welcome! It is very nice have this place back. And I hope that working in a book department is as cool as I imagine it to be...unless you're giving other people their copies of OoP on the 21st, that is. Smile Enjoy!

Hi, I just realized that I never posted here before. I'm Abby, 19 (today!), female, from Louisiana. I'm going to be starting my second year of college at the end of August. At the moment, I'm a history major and library science administration minor. However, my true ambition is to be an Egyptologist. That's my other obsession :-).

I've been around since just about the beginning of the forum, but I never even registered until around January. I'm very quiet and shy, but you wouldn't believe me if you've ever spoken (or typed, rather) to me in the chat room.

I read a great deal, but I was reluctant to read the Harry Potter books at first. Mainly because my mom recommended it, and books she recommends to me, I rarely enjoy. But I started reading them in May 2000, and I've been hooked ever since.

Abby 8-)

Dumbledore II - Jun 16, 2003 12:30 am (#620 of 658)

Happy Birthday Abby!

Caput Draconis - Jun 16, 2003 4:31 pm (#621 of 658)

Ditto - and nice pic. Smile

amathaunta - Jun 16, 2003 5:11 pm (#622 of 658)

Hi everyone!

I have been reading all the wonderful ideas and theories on here for a while, and decided with OOTP coming out in less than a week it would be a good idea to introduce myself, as I will most definitely enjoy adding my thoughts into the mix after reading!

So here goes....

My actual name is Tara, I'm an 18 yr old college student from Florida.

AIM Screenname : greenpixie006

Like I said, I really enjoy this forum and will be posting more soon!

Saralinda - Jun 16, 2003 5:46 pm (#623 of 658)

Welcome, Tara! I'm sure you'll be a real asset to the Forum family.

The Great Abbycadabra - Jun 16, 2003 7:50 pm (#624 of 658)

Welcome Tara!

And thanks Dumbledore and Caput! It is a nice pic isn't it?

Esra - Jun 17, 2003 1:40 am (#625 of 658)

HI everybody!

I've been reading the forum for a great while now and it's amazing what you all know about Harry Potter! It seems to me you all must have been reading and re-reading the books at least a hundred times.

Well, I don't know that much about the books, but like all of you I'm eagerly awaiting the 21st - so here I am!

My name is Irene, I am 18 and from Austria!

Glad to have joined in at last, Ira

Welcome Irene, If I'm not mistaken, I believe you're our first member from Austria.

Well a hundred times may be stretching it, but most of us have read the books multiple times. (Sshhh...don't tell anyone-most of what we "know" is speculation.)

Esra - Jun 17, 2003 3:08 am (#627 of 658)

I'm so jealous, I borrowed all 4 books so I can't re-read them. It makes me run berserk when I realize I've forgotten something and can't look it up! (the Lexicon is a great help but still)

Greetings, Ira

Dumbledore II - Jun 17, 2003 4:15 am (#628 of 658)

No she is not shepherdess, I was the first one! I only don't live there anymore but I am Austrian

Molli Hall - Jun 17, 2003 12:10 pm (#629 of 658)

Hello... I'm from the south east Texas. I'm real close to the coast and to Louisiana.

Molli Hall - Jun 17, 2003 12:17 pm (#630 of 658)

I'm from Port Arthur. I teach in a Catholic school here. We read Chamber of Secrets with our 5th and 6th graders. When they finished it, the movie was just coming out in the theathers and I arranged a private screening for them at the movie theater. They loved all of it and they were able to pick out all of the differences between the book and the movie and what they had left out. They are pumped up about next year and next book.

rettoP yrraH - Jun 17, 2003 1:22 pm (#631 of 658)

(I would make a comment but i might get murdered for it...this is a joke by the way)

Hi Molli. Did your class read the Plisphers stone first or you went right to Chamber of Secrets?

Sam the Onewhostirrsupthemudonthebottomofthepond

Molli Hall - Jun 17, 2003 5:24 pm (#632 of 658)

Yes, they did. They at first were thinking that since the next one was a larger book that we would not have them read it but we are.

Ticker - Jun 17, 2003 5:52 pm (#633 of 658)

Hey - welcome everyone - Tara, Esra, Molli, anyone else I missed!

From - Ticker

Cliff Hamaker - Jun 17, 2003 6:52 pm (#634 of 658)

You know, I never actually posted to this thread...

Guess I'll do it now!

Well, I'm Cliff, as you may have guessed. I've been on the Forum since UHPFC went down, so you do the math. I live in the Hampton Roads area, and I don't think anyoe is remotely close to me... So! I feel alone.... But I've got y'all, so I'm good. And now I'm done.

Ticker - Jun 17, 2003 7:04 pm (#635 of 658)

UHPFC? - sounds like I need to do English rather than math.

Hampton Roads? - Is that near the Yellow Brick one near Kansas?

Cliff - It's great to see you introduce yourself! Just harassing you a bit to learn more about you. Hope you don't mind.

For those of you who haven't met Cliff, let me just say that he has profound thoughts, amazing stories & is an all-around great guy (and he didn't even liquor me up on butter-beer to say this - but I hope he will).

shepherdess - Jun 17, 2003 11:39 pm (#636 of 658)

Dumbledore II, I'm so sorry! I didn't realize you were Austrian. I didn't mean to leave you out.

This has nothing to do with anything, but when I was in elementary school I had a teacher who was from Austria (loved her!), and in eleventh grade I went to school with her son (nice young man).

Dumbledore II - Jun 18, 2003 12:10 am (#637 of 658)

No harm done shepherdess! Smile

KathyG - Jun 18, 2003 11:55 am (#639 of 658)

Hi! I'm 28 Gender Momma (as my kids call me) I live in upstate NY. I had no interest in reading a "kids book" until My daughter got punished and her punishment was to right me a paragragh (shes Cool on two differances between the book and the movie.Well, needless to say I started PS myself so I knew what the diffrences where. Three weeks later I finished GoF and Pre ordered OoP. I now know the differences between ignorance and knowledge.

Cliff Hamaker - Jun 18, 2003 5:52 pm (#640 of 658)

Yeah! Glad to have you on board, Kathy!

And thank you, Ticker. I didn't know I was so well loved! We REALLY need our chat room back...

Oh and in answer to your questions...

UHPFC- Unofficial Harry Potter Fan Club (run by Jenna, taken down earlier this year)

Hampton Roads- Nope, a little west of Kansas...

Lars Smedberg - Jun 19, 2003 11:05 am (#641 of 658)

Well... I guess this is goodbye then ! Tomorrow I won't be able to reach the Internet, and the day after tomorrow is June 21; the arrival of HP # 5. The Swedish translation won't come until next year, and when will the "adult pocket" come (that's the English edition I'm collecting) and be for sale in Sweden ? Well - I can't come back here until I've read HP # 5 - so good-bye !

megfox - Jun 19, 2003 11:06 am (#642 of 658)

Bye Lars! Hopefully you can get a copy of it sooner, but come back when you can!

Kip Carter - Jun 19, 2003 11:14 am (#643 of 658)

You are welcome to come back. I have not announce it yet; however I will be placing everyone on a moderated status beginning at 12:01 am BST (British Summer Time) Saturday 21 June 2003 which is when the book officially goes on sale in London. All members and guest will remain in that status until the first part of next week and I have not determine that time and date as of this moment.

What this will mean is that the Hosts of this Forum will have to release a post before it is allowed on this system. This would allow you to still read the Forum. You would be more than welcome to post to a thread that does not concern Book Five.

rettoP yrraH - Jun 19, 2003 12:18 pm (#644 of 658)

So long Lars, Have a good year.

Cool Kip!

Buckbeat - Jun 19, 2003 1:16 pm (#645 of 658)

Hello, I finally found this thread and I think it´s time to introduce myself: I am female, from Germany and never thought about reading HP, till I got PS and CS for my 30th birthday three years ago. Since people get suspicious when I try to discuss HP more than once a week with them, I am happy to have found this forum. It´s just 11p.m. - 26 hours to go....

And: Buckbeat really is one of my favorite characters (there are only two who can fly without broomstick).

Gabrielle D - Jun 19, 2003 2:14 pm (#646 of 658)

Buckbeat, Who's the other?

(Oh no ---> I've Harry memory block the day before the new one's out!)

Penny Lane. - Jun 19, 2003 2:23 pm (#647 of 658)

Norbert, silly!

Hey, in Fantastic Beasts, there are lots of beings and beasts and spirits who can fly. although I guess Ghosts glide more then fly...

anbigin - Jun 19, 2003 2:25 pm (#648 of 658)
Edited Jun 19, 2003 3:25 pm

How about the phenoix? For that matter, what about owls ... they can fly ... but then maybe theyre not her favorites?

Denise S. - Jun 19, 2003 5:49 pm (#649 of 658)

Hi ever'one. I'm not entirely sure what has been up with the forums and all, so I'll post here and say I'm back and extremely jealous--I read the online journal of a librarian who has alreadys started reading OoP!!! *grrr* *kind of*

Gabrielle D - Jun 19, 2003 6:32 pm (#650 of 658)

OOOOOOhhh... Norbert... how can I forget my little fire breathing friend. Some other ones that fly ---> the snitch and the three dragons in the first task.

Carina - Jun 19, 2003 8:13 pm (#651 of 658)

Hey Gabriella, (totally un-related to Harry, BTW) where are you getting the cool Calvin and Hobbes pictures? I was so bummed when they stopped!

Detail Seeker - Jun 19, 2003 10:18 pm (#652 of 658)

Hallo, Buckbeat - wo in Deutschland lebst Du ? Gruss eines Holsteiners aus Berlin

kimiraikkonen - Jun 20, 2003 5:03 am (#653 of 658)

10 hours to go...

Is anyone keeping count of the number of Texans on this forum? They seem to be overunning this place.

And I think the moderated status idea is a great one Kip. I'm glad you thought of it, the reasons for which i mentioned some time ago.

Kathy Lynch - Jun 20, 2003 5:42 am (#654 of 658)

I was thinking the same thing, kimi. Let's see, there's.... what, five now?

Gabrielle D - Jun 20, 2003 7:28 am (#655 of 658)

This address should take you right to the site [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

kimiraikkonen - Jun 20, 2003 8:27 am (#656 of 658)

I think there are more than five, but I'm not keeping count, so I'll trust your figure Kathy. But one thing that I'm sure of is that the Texans are a vocal bunch, so that might be why I'm getting the numbers wrong.

Sly Girl - Jun 20, 2003 10:39 am (#657 of 658)

Welcome Back Denise! Missed ya.

Carina - Jun 20, 2003 5:38 pm (#658 of 658)

Thanks, Gabrielle! I love C&H almost as much as Harry!

edit: poop, I've been moderated!
