Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Great new avatar, Choices! The answer to the riddle is not Hogwarts itself, but the direction is quite good. (You have solved the "Castle" part.)
Keep guessing, please.
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.
Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.
Guessed: the Bloody Baron, Sir Cadogan, Nearly Headless Nick, Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore, Hogwarts itself.
Keep guessing, please.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks about the avatar. OK, the castle part is Hogwarts, but I think it would be too easy to assume that the "Prince" part refers to Snape. JKR said in an interview that Harry made sure that a portrait of Snape was hung in the headmaster's office and I thought maybe the riddle referred to that, but it's not in the book. I am at a loss, but I'm still working on it.

Excellent reasoning, Choices! That's the way to go! Keep guessing.
The answer is not Snape's portrait in the Headmaster's office, but there is reference to it (or to the lack of it) in the riddle.

OK, now I am grasping at straws, but could it be Snape's memories that he leaves at the time of his death?

Or could it be the Snape-shaped hole that was left in the window after Snape leapt through it?

Choices, the memories are a very good guess , in fact I almost expected that someone would think of them. You have done a great job throughout the guessing!
The answer, however, has been found by Verity: It is indeed
The riddle:
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.
Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.
The explanation:
Well done, Verity! I look forward to your riddle!
The answer, however, has been found by Verity: It is indeed
- Spoiler:
- the Snape-shaped hole that was left in the window after Snape leapt through it.
The riddle:
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.
Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.
The explanation:
- Spoiler:
- Neither solid, nor liquid
A hole has no substance.
On departure left behind
When leaves the castle for the last time...
Of high and dramatic birth
'High' refers to the location of the window: one of the upper floors of Hogwarts, only two floors below Ravenclaw Tower. 'Dramatic' refers to 's duel against the four Heads of the Houses and his dramatic escape through the window.
You can't touch me – never mind.
You can't exactly touch a hole (only its edges or the air through it).
Neither canvas, nor colour
On the pages of the book at least, there is no mention of a magical portrait appearing after 's death - it seems the -shaped hole is the only representation he gets.
I bet he did not even wince
probably used magic as he went through the window, so (hopefully) the glass did not give him reason to "wince".
You can see me and beyond
You may not be able to touch a hole, but you can certainly see it, and you can also see through it.
I am the Castle and the Prince.
The -shaped hole is physically part of Hogwarts Castle (or one of its windows), and it is also a representation of Severus Snape, the Half-Blood Prince.
Guessed: the Bloody Baron, Sir Cadogan, Nearly Headless Nick, Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore, Hogwarts itself, Snape's portrait that is not in the Headmaster's office, Snape's memories that he leaves at the time of his death.
Well done, Verity! I look forward to your riddle!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Oh dear, now I have to think of a riddle!
Julia, that riddle was just perfect. It sounded beautiful, and I was sure when I read it that the first verse referred to a ghost. It sounded like such a lovely ghostly description. However, when the Snape-shaped hole came to me, the whole of the riddle suddenly made sense, just the way it should when you know the answer. You are truly the riddle master! or mistress!

Oh, thanks, Verity!
Ghosts are defined in HP as "imprints", and I think the -shaped hole can also be defined as a sort of "imprint", so they have something in common.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
OK, here goes with the new riddle. I'm afraid it's not nearly as poetic as Julia's beautiful riddle, but my brain is so busy with other stuff these days that coming up with a riddle at all is quite an achievement.
I'm almost bearded but I have no hair
Charmingly large, you can take me anywhere
I expect this will be solved quite easily. It seems perfectly obvious to me, but it's the best I could do for now.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I think it's a very good riddle......I'm already stumped. LOL But, I will hazard a guess - at first I thought of a hippogryff, but they do have hair on the back end, so is it a dragon?

Thanks for the guess Choices. It's not a dragon though (or a hippogriff).

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thank goodness for you, Choices, or this thread would grind to a halt. And you make some good guesses, even though they're not correct (so far) you save other people making those same guesses and so help to narrow down the riddle and perhaps steer their guessing in the right direction. That's what happened with that last riddle of Julia's. I was convinced the riddle referred to a ghost of some kind, but then your guess about the memories just caused the right answer to suddenly flash into my head. So keep guessing!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks Verity. :-)
Almost bearded - this makes me think of something that has not yet reached the age to grow a beard - something young. It has no hair and is large. You can take him anywhere, so this seems to say he has traveled a bit.
Is it possibly a snake - either Nagini or the zoo snake?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks for the new guesses Choices, but I'm afraid it's not a snake of any kind. I'll leave it a bit longer before I add a clue - you never know, someone else might actually make a guess!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I've been thinking about the riddle for days, but I haven't been able to think of anything that would seem to fit the clues. Here are two desperate guesses anyway:
Almost bearded with no hair makes me suspect a pun - perhaps it's something that sounds similar to bearded but not quite the same. Charmingly may refer to some magical quality, and you can take me anywhere reminds me of transportation. So the answer could be (LOL) a large magical vehicle that can be boarded (not exactly 'bearded') - how about the Durmstrang ship?
Alternatively, bearded can be associated with 'old', so my second guess is Running Gag 3, the Elder Wand.
Have we earned a hint?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Yay, another guesser! You are right to not take the clues too literally, Julia. I wouldn't describe it as a pun, but it is a play on words. Unfortunately, neither the Durmstrang Ship nor the Elder Wand is the answer I'm looking for. I will add a hint, but remember to think laterally.
I'm almost bearded but I have no hair
Charmingly large, you can take me anywhere
Hint: A mixed up Talented Cube made me what I am
Guessed: Dragon, Hippogriff, Thestral, Nagini or the zoo snake, the Durmstrang Ship, the Elder Wand

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Whoa, a mixed up Talented Cube? I'm a mixed up Choices........I think that hint just confunded me more. LOL The first thing that came to mind is Rubik's Cube - huh? Then I googled Talented Cube and it mentioned someone named Ice Cube and his Talented friends and that I do not pretend to understand. So, here's another wild guess - Is it the tent the Weasley's used at the Quidditch World Cup? It was getting older, but had no hair - enchanted to make it larger and used to stay in when traveling.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Sorry Choices, I was afraid the hint might do that. Anyway, you are definitely on the right track with your reasoning about the tent, not so much the bit about it being old, but definitely the bit about it being large and useful when travelling.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I thought I'd post my thoughts and hope that I don't win since I'm not good at thinking up riddles.
Focusing on the second line, charmingly implies magical, large, well large! Take me anywhere sounds like transportation...
So... The Knight Bus, or the Beauxbaton's carriage?
Neither of these works well with the first line on the surface, so I don't expect these to be right.
BB

Thanks for the guesses BB, but persistence pays off - Choices has the answer!
It is...
I hope we keep seeing you on this thread, BB
Congratulations Choices!
It is...
- Spoiler:
- Hermione's small, beaded handbag.
I'm almost bearded but I have no hair
If you take away the r then bearded becomes beaded, but the handbag obviously doesn't have any hair
Charmingly large, you can take me anywhere
Hermione performed an undetectable extension charm on the bag, hence the word 'charmingly'. So although it is large on the inside, it's still easy to carry around
Hint: A mixed up TALENTED CUBE made me what I am
'Talented Cube' is an anagram of 'undetectable' - a hint about the charm that Hermione performed
I hope we keep seeing you on this thread, BB
Congratulations Choices!
