I just have to say... you people are amazingly clever! I wouldn't have the foggiest notion of what to guess! I didn't even remember the whole

The riddle makes me think of the cakes that knocked out Crabb and Goyle in CoS in the Polyjuice Potion chapter.

That's a good guess Julia. I'm still totally stumped, but I'll guess Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Good guesses, but not the answer. Verity, you are heading in the right direction.
Taking an afternoon respite, I see.
Clotted cream cakes - as genteel as can be!
But while you are nibbling the best fromage blanc,
Be ever so careful, or I'LL GET YOUR CONK!
Guessed: Peeves, Tom Riddle, Jr., the cakes that knocked out Crab and Goyle, Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop
edited to add: After a quick check of the books, I discovered there are two answers that fit equally well . . . . (sigh). But that doubles your chances!

Could it be Draco Malfoy, who knocked Harry out on the train and then broke his nose?

What about one of the floating, golden, confetti-throwing cherubs at Madam Puddifoot's?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Choices, that is a good guess, but not what I was thinking of.
Verity is getting even closer, although the answer isn't actually found at Madam Puddifoot's.
Concentrate on the last line . . .

Is it possibly Aberforth Dumbledore (since fromage blanc is made with goat's milk)?

Is it a nose-biting teacup?

Julia has the answer!! But everyone had some interesting guesses - I enjoyed hearing them.
Taking an afternoon respite, I see.
Clotted cream cakes - as genteel as can be!
But while you are nibbling the best fromage blanc,
Be ever so careful, or I'LL GET YOUR CONK!

- Spoiler:
The answer was a nose-biting teacup.
Taking an afternoon respite, I see,
Clotted-cream cakes, as genteel as can be!
I was trying to suggest afternoon tea or a tea party, where a tea cup would be used. Afternoon tea is often considered a "respite" (at least, according to my British brother-in-law), and clotted cream is often served.
But while you are nibbling the best fromage blanc
OK - this existed solely for the sake of the rhyme, but when I checked online, fromage blanc can be served with fruit and sugar for dessert, so I thought it wouldn't be completely out of place for tea.
Be ever so careful, or I'LL GET YOUR CONK!
Peeves' line when grabbing your nose was, "GOT YOUR CONK!"
When I checked CoS (which is where I thought I read about the cup ), I discovered the nose-grabbing implement was a pair of enchanted sugar tongs, so that answer would have worked as well.

Thanks, Lady Arabella!
The new riddle:
Meant to do the job
For less than a year
Entertained the mob
Didn't work, oh dear.
Still, some help I got
As I was to fail
- Success on the spot?
On a larger scale.

Well let's get the rest of the DADA teachers out of the way. Is it Dolores Umbridge?

LOL, Verity, these DADA teachers all seem to fit to some extent, but the answer is not Dolores Umbridge.

OK, I'm moving on to lines 3 and 4 - is it the band playing the musical saws at Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Great ideas, Lady Arabella and Verity. The answer is neither Hagrid trying to enlist the giants' support, nor the band playing the musical saws at Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I am scared to guess because by some stroke of luck, I have to make up my own riddle.
However, no guts, no glory.
Is it Severus Snape?

BB, you might be on to something there. Just to be a bit more specific, is it the charm Snape did on DD's cursed hand?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
BB, Severus Snape is my favourite guess for any riddle, but not the answer this time.
Verity, the charm Snape did on DD's cursed hand is a great idea for a riddle, but unfortunately, it was not my idea. However, this guess is more in the direction of the answer than the earlier ones.
As a general warning, I'll let you know that the first two lines are somewhat ... tricky. Keep guessing, please.
