Choose a better/worse fate for Severus Snape (6/29/08-7/13/08)

Edited by Kip Carter Jul 20, 2008 3:17 pm

This poll was suggested --and partially written-- by Hogwarts Class of '85. The rest of the poll choices were written by Julia, Orion and Mrs. Brisbee. Kudos to you all! Great job!

If the prophecy could have applied to Terry Boot and possibly Michael Corner, rather than Harry Potter and possibly Neville Longbottom - what would Snape's fate have been by the end of DH?

------------------

PART ONE: From the 6 possible (relatively) good fates for Severus Snape, please choose your favorite (yes...just one).

A) You mean Harry Potter's stepfather? He moved in quickly after the tragic death of Harry's father James in the battle of Hogwarts. Who would have thought he would have switched sides in that final battle.

B) You mean the man whose name you can see on this memorial? He was a young Death Eater who one day decided to open Voldemort's prison and free the prisoners, who were facing torture and death there. He had to sacrifice his life to break the various spells that guarded the prison but he managed to free the prisoners. Among the ones who escaped were Lily and James Potter, who later named their second child after him.

C) Oh, yes. Professor Snape became the late Albus Dumbledore's most important ally in his fight against Voldemort when, as a young DE, he went to Dumbledore to warn him about an exceptionally vicious plan of Voldemort's against muggle-borns. He became headmaster after the victory and a very good one. Do you know he has recently got married? Very young wife, this Lily Snape, her parents went to school with her husband...

D)Severus Snape was rewarded for his loyalty to the Dark Lord with a prestigious Ministry job to produce new Dark spells and objects for Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Snape is currently the Head of the Dark Arts Development Department, where he is affectionately known to his underlings as Big DADDy.

E) Snape soon found out that he didn’t much like being a DE because he didn’t fancy the ladies. So he found a way to leave quickly, that is, to bash Voldie’s head in with a certain Gilbert Goyle’s old beater’s bat when Voldie wasn’t looking. There was much talk afterwards about Vapormort hanging around sadly in a forest in Albania, but DD finished off all the Horcruxes one by one. To get the Cup Horcrux, DD had to polyjuice Bellatrix, using two bottles of excellent Bordeaux. To his intense amazement, he found out that he liked looking like her so much that he decided to lock her into a trunk… that was the end of Bellatrix. Snape got over Lily in the end and married a certain Narcissa Black, divorced (and childless) Malfoy. They had a son called Draco who had a huge nose, a pointed chin, mousey-brown hair and a friendly personality.

F) If we all breathe very cautiously and don't make any sudden movements, she will write book eight (Harry Potter and the very very secret department) which starts in the Great Hall immediately when HRH have returned from DD's office, and a whey-faced and very disgruntled (well, nothing new here) Snape staggers in, clutching at his neck, and snarls at Harry "Thought I was done for, didn't you Potter? Well I have news for you - there were a few VERY useful spells in the last pages you were too slow to snaffle, and for the minutes, that was the last time I saved your spotty bum! That's it, I'm off." and then walks, staggers or crawls to the nearest exit and leaves this pestilential school for good. So hold your breath..."

------------------

PART TWO: From the 5 choices below, please choose your favorite horrible fate for Severus Snape (yes...just one).

G) You dare mention his name? - you must be very brave. We thought the Dark Lord was bad, but this self-proclaimed Prince is another matter altogether.

H) A member of the Dark Lord's inner circle, Professor Snape is currently Headmaster of Hogwarts. He was acquitted of the murders of former Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Mr and Mrs Corner and young Michael, Mr and Mrs Boot and young Terry as well as the torture of numerous muggle-borns by the Wizengamot of which he was Chief Warlock at the time.

I) Wasn't he a Death Eater who was killed by Voldermort when he tried to leave?

J) Severus who?

K) Severus Snape remained in favor with Lord What-Have-You-Done-For-Me-Lately Voldemort for only a short time. Having failed to achieve the accolades he felt he deserved, Snape fled to Switzerland. Although he remains in hiding, he has produced the international best selling Advancements in Potion Making, and is said to currently be working on his autobiography, Dark Arts, Death Eaters, Dunderheads, and Me.

If you enjoyed this poll, check out the other new thread (not exactly a poll) "Write Your Own Epilogue for Severus Snape", also in the Votes section.

Kip's comments: Host shepherdess made the original edits on this post June 29, 2008 at 7:59 pm and should receive the credit for her work; however the system only will display the most recent edit and my edits were very minor in relation to shepherdess. I felt that it was necessary to make everyone aware that shepherdess had actually done the majority of the work.

For Part 1: F All I can say is LOL Hilarious!

Part 2: I'm going to have to go with K. The title of the Autobiography is great and since it;s the worst thing for Snape poll, I figured he'd hate to write a book! LOL

F and K. Lol, now I see that I've chosen the same as Tori - great minds etc...

Verity Weasley - Jun 30, 2008 4:29 am (#3 of 28)

E and J - it would be truly horrible for Snape not to be remembered at all.

Harry Potter

Thank you's go out to Solitaire --for noticing that choice H) did not post completely, af first-- and to Shepherdess and Kip for fixing my too-long-post-with-missing-bits so that it all shows. Thank you!

Such a hard choice. I guess I'll go for F and K.

I realize that I am not unique, but I think I choose F and K . I sort of like the attitude in F (though I must admit I also like friendly, mousy-haired Draco in E) and I like the title of the K autobiography and think I would like to read it if he ever finished it.

Hmm, I really like F, it's great and funny, but the poll states:

If the prophecy could have applied to Terry Boot and possibly Michael Corner, rather than Harry Potter and possibly Neville Longbottom - what would Snape's fate have been by the end of DH?

It would make a great entry on the other poll, "Write Your Own Epilogue for Severus Snape", but I'm not sure I can vote for it here and have it make sense within the definition of this poll.

It's a toss up between D and B. A "good" fate for Snape might be where he turns against Voldemort, so B is almost tolerable. But it's a little tough on Snape because he has to die. I suppose it's one of those there are fates worse than death things. So, Snape's soul, or his life?

I'll vote B.

For part 2 I'll go with J. Severus who? ROFL, he won't like that!

wynnleaf - Jun 30, 2008 5:35 pm (#8 of 28)

If Mrs Brisbee hadn't pointed out the original line in the poll, I'd have gone with F, because I like that ending to DH rather than Snape dead. But given that it's Terry and and Michael, and the prophecy didn't target Harry at all, then we'd never have Harry as Boy Who Lived. So I think I'll choose

C

At least in C, Snape turns away from LV, helps the Order, and gets to live. Wizards live so long, I guess he could eventually marry someone a lot younger, although I guess James would have a fit.

In Part 2, I love K. The autobiography title is excellent!

Oh wow, how to choose!

F: :rotflmao!!!

I guess it doesn't matter who the Prophecy Boy is, as long as it isn't Lily's child. Take Lily out of the equation and I don't know that Snape would have turned.

BUT- I choose E and K.

Take Lily out of the equation and I don't know that Snape would have turned. (journeymom)

Yes, which is why I couldn't choose F, even though I liked it. But I think Lily would have always been in the equation, if not sooner, then later, because she and James had "defied" LV 3 times. They were in the Order. And she was muggleborn. Sooner or later LV would have targeted them and Snape learned about it.

Nicoline Vance - Jul 1, 2008 7:08 pm (#11 of 28)

Great list, but since I can only choose one from each section, I'll go with B & K.

_____________________________________

mona amon - Jul 2, 2008 3:52 am (#12 of 28)

I'm not choosing c) because I don't like the idea of Severus marrying Lily and James' daughter. I'd much rather he he moved on and married someone completely unconnected to his past.

So I think I'll choose F) as it is absolutely hilarious, even if it does have Harry as the prophecy boy. D) is very funny too. Big DADDy LOL!

For part 2 it's K) without a doubt!

So F) and K) are my choices.

Julia H. - Jul 2, 2008 10:26 am (#13 of 28)

I will choose E because I think this is Orion at her best and because when I first read it, it made me absolutely ROTFL at the end of a rather gloomy evening.

I am not sure what to mean by a "favourite bad fate" - in what sense should it be favourite? The worst possible? The least bad? The most likely? I think I will pick what I find the most likely and it is I - because I think whatever happens to the prophecy as long as Snape loves Lily, Lily will be in the equation and sooner or later he will have to realize that Lily is targeted - and then he will want to quit.

A - a very opportunistic fate

Solitaire - Jul 2, 2008 10:41 pm (#15 of 28)

Favorite good fate? Hm ... E, I think, although I am a bit confused about one thing. Snape keeps Bella locked in a trunk so he can fire up a cauldron full of Polyjuice potion and look like her when he wants ... yet he marries her sister? Does he keep his predilection for looking like Bella a secret from Narcissa? I rather like the idea of a friendly Draco, though.

Favorite horrible fate? I would say K. Snape is good at Occlumency, so he should be able to keep his and Narcissa's whereabouts a secret, although writing best-sellers could jeopardize his security. Draco is also a fair Occlumens, so he can certainly keep himself hidden from Voldy. Not being the Chosen One, however, it is probably not necessary. I do love the title of Snape's autobiography.

Part of option E: "...To get the Cup Horcrux, DD had to polyjuice Bellatrix, using two bottles of excellent Bordeaux. To his intense amazement, he found out that he liked looking like her so much that he decided to lock her into a trunk… that was the end of Bellatrix.....

Solitaire, I think it was Dumbledore who locked Bella in a trunk, because he liked looking at her.....I know....Eeeeewwwwww!

Orion - Jul 3, 2008 8:06 am (#17 of 28)

No no no, erm, DD locked Bella into a trunk because he liked looking like her. Yes, I know, it's a bit yucky, but GOF tends to give you ideas.

Edit: Aaargh! Now I've found the mistake! It should have read "he had to polyjuice himself as Bellatrix". Sorry, foreign language and sloppiness.

Oh, and I misread, also ...something I do more and more frequently as I get older (probably not connected, though)...I thought it said "he liked looking at her", instead of "he liked looking like her"....I think the ick-factor is about equal for either version though, Orion.

Eek! I almost forgot to put in M2K in this poll!

PART 1: I'll have to go with my personal favourite ever since I read it on the Sirius thread, F, although the prophecy pertaining to Corner and Boot doesn't necessarily work with it (it doesn't necessarily not work either ). LOL, big DADDy!

PART 2: There are so many great choices here! I especially love the self-proclaimed Prince! The book title is also too funny! However, I'll go with J as I feel that Snape really wanted to be somebody in life. Forgotten after death would be terrible for him.

If LV doesn't target Lily Evans Potter and her son, assuming that is the only change, Snape's fate: for both (J) Severus who?

Now that the poll is over, I must say I am surprised that people voted for K. I'm flattered, because I submitted it, but it was originally supposed to be a "good fate" (good for an unrepentant Snape, anyway. He escapes Voldemort, never pays for his crimes, and gets international acclaim). I'm curious, if you voted for it, what made it your favorite bad fate?

_____________________________________

freshwater - Jul 13, 2008 9:10 pm (#25 of 28)

Maybe because I stuck it in the 'bad fate' list? I had a really hard time sorting the good fates from the bad fates....most could have been considered 'good', and I wanted to have nearly equal # of choices for each.....so I ended up putting most of the fates where he would have been considered a bad guy in the 'bad fate' list, and fates that the wizarding world would have admired in the 'good fate' list. Certainly some of the 'bad fates' could have been good in Severus' eyes because he ended up wealthy or successful in some way.

_____________________________________

Hoot Owl - Jul 17, 2008 9:13 pm (#26 of 28)

I found this poll question and the choices very confusing. If the prophecy had been applied to another child (not Lily's son), wouldn't the same fate have befallen LV? I am sure most mothers would stand between thier infant and the Dark Lord. Snape would not have returned to the good side, he would not have worked at Hogwarts, and Voldermont would have returned to hunt down whoever was ' The Boy Who Lived.'

James and Lily would have raised Harry themselves. Sirius and Remus would have been around his whole life. Who knows about Pettigrew he may have done like the Malfoys and pretended to be Imperiused. Or just got away with it like many of the Death Eaters.

The same holds for Snape! He would have been just another out of work Death Eater. He may have made a name for himself as a potioner or something. But DD would never have let him teach.

Anna L. Black - Jul 18, 2008 2:27 am (#27 of 28)

Hoot Owl, if it was somebody else, Voldemort wouldn't give the mother the choice to "stand aside". He only did that because Snape asked him to...
