Elanor - Apr 12, 2009 8:34 pm (#294 of 2994)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 25, 2009 9:17 am

1. Is it a person? No
2. Is it magical? No
3. Is it a thing? In itself, it is not. However it can become one.
4. Is it in the first three books? No
5. Is it/he/she in the last 3 books? Yes
6. Is it in all of the last three books? No
7. Is it alive? No
8. Is it in DH? Yes (but not only)
9. Is it some kind of entity-I am thinking about Ghosties and Ghouls and stuff like that? No
10. Is it also in HBP? No
11. Is it a concept ... like love? No (although this idea might put you on the right track)
12. Is it an object or part of an object? No. (I'm sorry, I can't explain more without giving the answer away. It is not an object yet somehow it can become part of an object.)
13. Is it the Soul-bit that goes into a Horcrux? No
14. Is it the anger Harry feels against Dumbledore? No
15. Does it go into or come out of the pensieve? No
16. Is it in GoF? No
17. Is it some kind of material? No
18. Is it thoughts of some kind? Well, it all depends on the definition of "thought". There is one meaning of the word that may be close enough to fit (not the first meaning of it though).
19. Is it visible for wizards? Let's say that in the scenes it appears it is visible. However, in itself, it is not something material.
20. Would it be the thoughts that attack Ron, both in the brain room and from the locket? No, it's not that kind of thoughts. However this is a brilliant idea for a future 20 questions game.
21. Is it what Harry sees when he is reading Voldemort's thoughts while inside Nagini? No
22. Is it the voice in the Ravenclaw Tower door that asks you a question? No
23. Is it the prophecy? No
24. Is this nonmaterial thing something that concerns (or affects, or interacts with) someone other than Harry? Yes (although he is the one seeing it in the scenes mentioned in question 19)
25. Does this non-thing become a thing as a result of a spell or incantation? I guess it could, and it probably did in the present case, but it doesn't have to. (like one doesn't need magic to wash the dishes but that doesn't mean it can't be done magically and, if it's at the Burrow, it is then probable it is done by magic)
26. Does it interact with an adult? Edit: (Or does an adult interact with it?) When we first see it, yes. But in itself it concerns more a group than one person.
27. Is it the scar on the back of Harry's hand that says "I must not tell lies"? No, but that track of thoughts could lead you to the answer...
28. Is it connected with Umbridge? No but this kind of question may help you a lot!
29. Is this topic some sort of action or activity? No (and it is not a verb that becomes a noun either)
30. Does it have something to do with the Battle of the DoM? No
31. Is it the Dark Mark? No
32. Is it the smoky apparition that appeared over DD's little silver instrument where he said, "Yes, but divided in essence?" No
33. Do we see this thing/non-thing in different locations in the two books? No. We see it at the same location (if not at the very same place at this location)
34. Do we see it at 12GP? Yes!!!
35. Is it the horcrux in the locket? No
36. Is it the image of Moody seen at 12GP? No
37. Is it connected to Sirius in some way? Yes!
38. Is it the fragment of mirror that Harry carries with him in his moleskin pouch? No
39 bis. Is it the image of the blue Dumbledore eyes Harry sees in that fragment of mirror? No
40. Is it the communication possible via this magical mirror Sirius gave to Harry? No
41. Is it the Patronus messages that come to 12GP--in OotP to notify Order members that the kids were at the Ministry and in DH to notify the kids that the Weasleys are okay? No. the "group" is not the trio or the order (and it is not something ghost-like either).
42. Is Kreacher involved with whatever it is somehow?
43. Is the "group" the Black family?
44. Is it the Black family tree?
45. Is it the Black family motto, Toujours Pur?

It is!!!! Congratulations Soli!

A motto is not something material, yet it can be when it is written down/painted/embroidered on a family tree or crest. We see it in the OotP on the Black family tree and in the DH in Regulus's bedroom.

Next game is yours Soli!

Edited to insert the full list of questions asked, with their answers, into the final post of this game, which originally included just the winner's name, the answer, and an accompanying message.

Edited the original post to correct a numbering problem later corrected by Elanor.

2. It is magical? No
3. Is it seen in more than one book? No
4. Is it an object? No
5. Is it a place? Yes
6. Is it in one of the first three books? Yes

12. Is it in the Hogwarts area? Yes
13. Is it a shop? No
14. Is it a green house? No
15. Do we actually see a character in this place as opposed to only hearing someone tell about it? We don't actually see the character inside the place.

17. Is this place actually somewhere inside the Hogwarts grounds? Yes
18. Is the place out in the open air? No
19. Is (are?) the character(s) student(s)? The character is definitely not a student!
20. Is this place within or a part of the castle of Hogwarts? Yes

Yes; Freshwater! It's the cupboard that Hagrid had Aragog in. We don't actually see the inside of the cupboard, or anyone or anything in it, but we see Aragog coming out of it. That made answering some questions a little tricky.

It's your turn!

Edited Apr 26, 2009 9:27 am

1. Is it a person? No.
2. Is it magical? Yes, I think so. I know the taps are magical, and the door must be also in order to recognize the password....and so is the mermaid window...but the whole room? This was a tough call...

5. Is it an animal? No.
6. Is it a place? YES!
7. Is it seen in more than one book? No, I don't believe so....
8. Does it ever say anything? No.
9. Is it rare? Not in the outrageously valuable sense, but in the sense of uncommon, yes.

11. Do we see or hear of this place in DH? We don't see it...it may be mentioned in passing, but is not important to the story in DH.

14. Is it inside the castle? Yes.
15. Do we actually get to visit this place with a character.....? Yes, we certainly do.

3. Is it magical? No.
4. Is it a place? No.
5. Is it a spell? No.
6. Is it an object? Yes, it is.

12. Do we see it in PS/SS? No.
13. Is it multi-coloured? No.
14. Is it something likely to be banned by Filch if he knew about it? Under normal circumstances, I doubt it would even be noticed.
15. Is the student it belongs to a male? Yes. Sorry, Shepherdess. I was at school and began working on the post before you ever posted. Since I didn't have my "sticky" at school, I had to go into the "source" so as to not have to totally reformat things all over again. Once I submitted it, I don't think I checked again, as I was busy with kids by that time. Again, sorry!
16. Does it move on its own in any way? No. (see #3)
17. You said "under normal circumstances", does it mean we see it under "special/unusual" circumstances? Yes. Additional information: This mundane thing only becomes important because of something that is happening at the time.

20. Does it belong to Harry? No.
21. Is it an item of clothing? No.

23. Is it a pair of Uncle Vernon's socks? LOL Nope!

freshwater - May 2, 2009 4:05 am (#540 of 2994)
Edited May 2, 2009 5:07 am

1. Is it magical? Yes.
2. Is it a witch or wizard? Yes.
3. Is it an object? No.
4. Is it related to the Dark Arts? Almost certainly "no".
5. Is this a male? No.
6. Is this magical person an adult? Yes.
7. Do we see him/her in more than one book? No, she is in only one book, I believe.
8. Is she a member of Hogwart's staff? No.
9. Is it Amelia Bones? No.
10. Does she work in Diagon Alley? Not work....no.
11. Do we see this witch actually perform any magic. No.

13. Is this witch Doris Crockford, whom Harry meets in PS/SS? YES! I love her enthusiasm when meeting Harry....she keeps getting in line to shake his hand...3X!

Wow, Solitaire! Here I'd thought I'd found a truly obscure HP person and was worried that folks might get cranky about it taking so long to guess... ...guess I didn't have to worry about that!

Thanks for the tip, BTW. I don't have Mac (funny how teachers seem to buy whatever system their school district uses so as to be compatible when doing work at home!) so I don't know what a "sticky" is. But I don't retype the list each time...I've been copy/pasting from previous posts. However, the page breaks don't seem to copy so I have to add those at the end of each line....

Elanor - May 14, 2009 8:35 pm (#694 of 2994)
Edited May 14, 2009 9:35 pm

1. Is it a person? No
2. Is it magical? No
3. Is it a place? Yes
4. Is it a thing? It is not an object but "a thing" might qualify in the way that it is quite a material place.
5. Is it located at Hogwarts? No
6. Is it a place like a room or structure of some sort? Not a (one) room. If by "structure" you mean it has walls, then yes.
7. Is this "place" portable? No
8. Is it located in London? No
9. Does this place have more than four walls? Yes
10. Is it a building? Yes
11. Is it a workplace for anyone? Yes
12. Is at least a part of it, bigger than just the average basement, underground? I don't know since we don't visit its basement in the series but I doubt it is bigger than average.
13. Has Harry ever entered this building? Yes
14. Does somebody live in this building? If you mean it is the usual residence of a character: no. If you mean it is a place suitable for living: yes.
15. Is it a shop? No
16. Is it the shack out on the rock, from PS/SS? No
17. Do we read about this place in more than one book? No
18. Is it mentioned in DH? No
19. Is Harry in a dangerous situation there? Not dangerous but not fun either. 'Awkward" would probably fit better.
20. Is it the Railview Hotel in PS, where Uncle Vernon takes his family? YES!!!

21. Do we see it in the first three books? Yes

Congratulations Julia! It was the Railview Hotel indeed! Next game is yours.

Julia H. - May 20, 2009 12:52 pm (#751 of 2994)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 25, 2009 12:10 pm

1. Is it a person? No.
2. Is it an object? Yes.
3. Is it a magical object? I don't know about any magical properties but it belongs to the wizarding world.
4. Does it belong to a specific person as opposed to an institution? Good question ... I would say both.
5. Can you carry it around? Yes. [/color]
6. Do we see it in more than one book? Yes.
7. Do we see it in all 7 books? No, at least I don't recall.
8. Is it a household item? No.
9. Do we see it in the first three books? Yes.
10. Is it a book? No.
11. Is the "institution" (question 4) it belongs to Hogwarts? Yes.
12. Is it smaller than a grown up person? Yes.
13. Can it be considered a piece of jewelry? Yes, I think it can. At least by some.
14. Is it the jewels that are used to determine each house's points? No, they are not jewels in that sense.
15. Did they once belong to a founder of Hogwarts? No, I don't think they could own them as others could.
16. Is it one of Dumbledore's? Yes, Dumbledore had one.
17. Is it a wizarding watch that we saw on DD in PS/SS and like Ron received for his 17th birthday? No, it is not.
18. Your enigmatic answer to #13 leads me to ask....is this some sort of embellishment on the skin, such as a tatoo or scar? No.
Clarifying the enigmatic answer: It is not a piece of jewelry, but it is apparently considered to be some kind of jewelry (and treated as such) by one character at least ...
19. Is it spectacles, like DD's silver moon spectacles? No, not spectacles.
20. Is one of these things (it sounds as if there were more of them in the series) in the possession of a house elf? No, house elves don't have any of these objects (but you are right that there are several of them).
21. When DD had one, did we learn of it or see it in only one book? I think we learn of it implicitly in one book but I don't think we actually "see" it.
22. Is it the scar on Dumbledore's knee that is a map of the London Underground? No.

Hint: There are several of these items and it is worth finding out who have them.

23. Is it the Time-Turner that Hermione wore on a chain around her neck? No, sorry.
24. Does Dumbledore use his as jewelry? We never see Dumbledore use it.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to abandon the Dumbledore line: He has had so many things and this object is not what you would first associate with Dumbledore, even though it is very much in character for him to have it.

25. Does Harry ever use one? No, not Harry...
26. Do we ever see one of the Trio use one of these nonmagical items? Yes!
27. Is one of these items owned by an adult (vs. a Hogwarts student)? No, not an adult vs. a student...
28. Do we see Muggle-born Hermione use this non-magical item? Yes, we do.
29. You have said this item makes an appearance in books 1-3. Do we see it in books 4 or 5, as well? Yes. I think the object makes its most important appearance in book 5. As for book 4, I don't remember seeing the object itself, but it is possible that we catch a glimpse of it somewhere.
30. Did Hermione get this object as a gift (as opposed to buying it somewhere)? Yes, she got it as opposed to buying it, but I would not call it a gift.
31. Is it a fancy quill, like the fancy black and gold one Hermione bought in Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop in Hogsmeade ... in OotP? No.
It is worth discovering other owners as well... and the purpose of the object.
32. Is this object used for school work? I can say yes if "school work" is not restricted to studying.
33. Does this object mimic another thing in appearance, like let's say a chess figure mimics a horse or a tower? No, I don't think so.
34. Is this object a Prefect's badge ... as worn by Percy (who totally considers it jewelry), and later Ron, Hermione, and others?

Yes!!! Congratulations, Solitaire!

I'm glad you agree that Percy considers it jewelry. About Dumbledore: It is mentioned in DH that he was a prefect, too, so I suppose he must have had a badge, even if it is not shown.

I look forward to your next puzzle.

2. Is it an object? Yes.
3. Do we ever see it at the Burrow? I don't think we actually see it there.
4. Is this object presumably at the Burrow with his/her owner at some point (something we can assume must be in the trunk of someone staying there for some time for example)? Yes.
5. Would it fit into an average pocket? (Not Hagrid's. ) It might ... we aren't given exact dimensions.
6. Is this object unique? No, we see others.

13. Has it been given to him by Ron or Hermione? Yes.
14. Is this object used in the fight against Voldemort? This particular one, no.

Julia, you're correct, it is the swamp. Congratulations! I'm looking forward to your new 20 questions riddle. Hopefully it's totally obscure, not in the sense of "mentioned once in passing and then never again" but in the sense of "so weird that all the answers have to have extra answers attached to them" but I don't want to put pressure on you, it's just a hope.

In everyday speech every living thing is a creature, aren't they? What else would a plant be? It eats, it breathes, it reproduces, it communicates.

Julia H. - Jul 3, 2009 10:20 am (#1176 of 2994)
Edited by Potteraholic Aug 25, 2009 1:22 pm

1. Is it an object? Yes.
2. Is whatever it is magical? Yes.
3. Do we see it in the first book? Yes.
4. Does this object belong to a particular person? No. On second thought, in fact some of these objects do.
5. Can it move? No.
6. Do we see these magical objects in any of the other books? Yes.
7. Are all of these objects in the first book identical? My first answer is that I don't know. My second answer is that I guess, even if they are not completely identical, they may be fairly similar.
8. Is it something required for a class? It is used in class.
9. Can you buy it in a shop? Yes.
10. Do these magical objects belong to students? Yes, some of them.
11. Are you talking about magic wands? No...
12. Is it a book? No.
13. Is it something the school furnishes for most kids? Hm. I think it is possible, but it depends on the use of the object.
14. Is it a broom? No.
15. Is it used in more than one class? For one kind of purpose, it is used in one class; for another kind of purpose, it is used in several classes.
16. Is it used in potions? Yes.
17. Is it dragonhide gloves? No, but a part of this guess is getting close!
18. Is it the earmuffs used in Herbology to prevent the students from hearing the cries of the Mandrakes? No.
19. Is it some sort of gloves? No.
20. Is it something on the supply list the kids receive? No, at least I don't think it is mentioned.
21. Is it a piece of equipment? No.
22. Is it a dragon's egg? No.
23. Is it parchment? No.
24. Is it some kind of material? Yes, it can be regarded as a kind of material, but in a more specific form.
25. Does Harry see it in a shop in Diagon Alley? I don't recall Harry seeing it in Diagon Alley, but he did get quite near at least one of these things there!
26. Is it edible? No.
27. Does Harry have one, whatever it is? Not until quite late in the series, when he comes into the possession of one.
28. Is it a potion ingredient? Yes...
29. Is it a Bezoar? No.
30. Is it a copy of Advanced Potion Making? No.
31. Is it the Snitch Dumbledore left to Harry in his will? No.
32. Is it dangerous to handle? No.
33. Do Ron and Hermione have whatever it is, as well? Ron does.

Hint: Even though Harry acquires one at some point in the story, it is not one of his "obvious" possessions. In fact, he acquires something else, and this thing "goes with it". It may be a good idea to find out where the readers can actually "see" these objects, or what else they are used for (apart from being potion ingredients).

34. Are these objects man-made? No.
35. Are these objects useful for defense? Not in themselves, but in combination with something else, definitely.
36. Does Harry steal this potions ingredient from someone (as opposed to having received it from someone)? Harry never steals this thing. When he acquires one, it is not as a potion ingredient, and he neither steals, nor receives it. He acquires it in another way.
37. Does Harry find this item? No.
38. Are these objects plants? No, not plants...
39. Are they parts of animals? Yes!
40. Does Harry buy this item? No.
41. Is it given to him? No.
42. Does he win it? If you mean winning it in a fight, then yes, he does (as a part of something else).
43. When Harry acquires this item, is he at Hogwarts (as opposed to being somewhere else)? He is somewhere else.
44. Does he acquire it during DH, when he and the trio are Horcrux-hunting? Yes!
So these objects are animal parts that are used as potion ingredients but can be used in other ways as well. Harry acquires one as part of something else that he acquires by winning it in a fight during his Horcrux-hunt in DH. Ron has also got one, and this object can be used for defence though not in itself.
45. A unicorn tail hair?

Yes!!! It is both a potion ingredient and a wand core, and it happens to be the core of Draco's wand.

Congratulations, Orion!

21. Do we see this 'object' in the last 10 chapters of DH? Yes, we do indeed, old bean!
22. Do we see this 'object' in the last 5 chapters of DH? No.
23. Is it the shiny stuff--the thoughts--in the Pensieve? No.
24. Is it the hideout version of the Room of Requirement used by Neville and friends in DH? Almost! You’re fantastically close. Can you specify a bit?
25. Is it the bathroom that sprouted in the RoR when the girls came in?

Yes! Sprout! Oh, I love that bathroom! Clever ROR!

Congratulations, Soli!

(Obviously there was no need for a bathroom before the girls came in... )
