Okay, I'll take a crack at it:

Silhouetted against the golden moon, and growing larger every moment, was a large, strangely lopsided creature, and it was flapping in Harry's direction.

I'm not positive of the book--PoA, I think--but it refers to Errol (the Weasleys' decrepit owl) and a couple of other owls bringing Harry his birthday cake and gifts from Ron and Hermione. They looked like a creature in the distance, because Errol was kind of "sagging" and needed to be held up by the other owls, if I remember right.
