Riddles - From the Archives
Thanks to the dedicated work of many of our forum members, in this case mostly Potteraholic and Mona, we are fortunate to have a fantastic archive of many of our Potty Games. For this reunion, I thought it would be fun to gather a selection of riddles from the archives and present them here to be re-solved. I don't think there's any danger of people remembering the answer from when the riddles first appeared, as there were riddles in the archives that I had created, and I still couldn't remember the answer!
I had a lot of fun trawling through and selecting these riddles. If you enjoy them, why not have a look yourself. If you used to play on the riddle thread, it can be fun to look back at your old riddles.
I will post FIVE riddles here in this post. Feel free to make a guess for any or all of them. I'll try and update during the weekend to let people know if they're on the right track or not, and I'll post the solutions, in spoiler boxes on Sunday, so others can still guess if they want to.
Riddle No. 1

Handsome was I, in days past
In my prime, I was filled with hatred and arrogance,
And a pride so fierce and unrelenting,
Some of my prized possessions were cast far and wide
And I was promised to one who did not want me
I have been sought by many,
But have been found only by a lofty few

My story is quite gory
but I can't take all the credit
If you ask, I shall not bask,
so you might as well forget it
I'm partial to a drink and my appetite is hearty
but you will never find me in the kitchen at a party
Who or what am I?
Riddle No. 3

This was obviously a challenging riddle, as it seems Julia progressively added lines as additional clues. The original riddle is recreated below, with the additional sections in the spoiler boxes. Try to resist the temptation to look in the second spoiler box until you're really sure you can't solve it.
We are no brothers; no child, man and wife.
Three things unite us: matter, knowledge, life.
Of differences, three things will be told:
Invisible veil, animal and gold.

What's owned by our running spy
What's watered down if women cry
Ask legolas! Ask legolas!
Have fun!

Of differences, three things will be told:
Invisible veil, animal and gold.
- First Clue:
- Knowledge of wisdom, of school and of old,
Life: opposed to death, matter: hard and cold.
One of us: guarded, one: lost in the past,
Forgotten the third - remembered at last.
- Second Clue:
- Our hiding places can be useful guides.
Other things are shown where the first one hides.
The sun never shines where the second grows.
The case of the third opens at the close.

It's great to see the first guess here. Where's everyone else?
