Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Lady Arabella, Luna Lovegood, lunar or moon have nothing to do with the riddle. But the Luna - lunar connection is a step in the direction of the answer.
Keep guessing, please.
The shared friend of bitter foes
Or an old man's joys and woes
A duplicate for the third
Reaching a sound for a word
And finally something small
Reminds you of someone tall
- There are altogether five
We can see two of them live
Hint:
Now string them together, and answer me this,
Which of them would you be willing to kiss?
Guessed: Beds in Harry's dormitory in Gryffindor Tower; Hagrid's pets (Fang, Fluffy, Aragog, Norbert, Buckbeak), people's pets, Luna Lovegood, lunar or moon.
Keep guessing, please.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Do wands, feathers or keys have any connection?
(What is the record length of time a puzzle has gone unsolved, and are we approaching it?
Where are the when you need them? )

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Lady Arabella, I don't think we are anywhere near the record length yet. The are you all, so it's you who will solve the puzzle.
Let's see... Wands: There is something in the riddle that you do with wands. Feathers: No. More like hair and skin. Keys: No, not really.
You'll find some more hints below. Keep guessing, please.

NEW games subfolders...
Some things on the Home page have changed...
I noticed that the 20Qs thread was going to end in 5 pages, so I asked Denise to rename the 'Indexed Archives' folder in the Potty Games section to 'Completed Game Threads'. Each Potty Game has its own folder where its completed thread will go, as well as its Archived List of past games and answers (if applicable). So anyone who checks any game's Archived list, look for it in that game's folder.

I really don't think I have the answer, but in order to get this thread going again, I'll hazard a guess.
The dragons in the stories? (4 in triwizard tournament and 1 in Gringotts).

Thanks for the guess, BB! The answer is much less scary than the dragons in the stories (in fact, not scary at all), but the riddle is so thankful that it's sending you some more hints.
Keep guessing, please.

Hint 4: The "shared friend" is not a person.
Hint 5: The connection between "something small" and "someone tall" is especially apparent in cold weather.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Julia, I have absolutely no idea what the answer is , but I make a desperate guess, just because the riddle deserves some guesses: animaguses (animagi?)

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Nice to see you, Dryleaves!
The answer is not animaguses (animagi) - or at least I don't think so (hint!) -, but one of the clues refers to a certain animagus indeed.
Keep guessing, please.

The shared friend of bitter foes
Or an old man's joys and woes
A duplicate for the third
Reaching a sound for a word
And finally something small
Reminds you of someone tall
- There are altogether five

The riddle is solved! Well done, Dryleaves!
* answers below *
I look forward to a new Dryleaves-riddle!
Or an old man's joys and woes
A duplicate for the third
Reaching a sound for a word
And finally something small
Reminds you of someone tall
- There are altogether five
We can see two of them live
The riddle is solved! Well done, Dryleaves!
* answers below *
- Spoiler:
The explanation:
The shared friend of bitter foes
CAT: The shared patronus of Minerva and Umbridge
Or an old man's joys and woes
Another clue for CAT by means of Filch's Mrs Norris
A duplicate for the third
Another T (the third letter in CATTERMOLE is doubled)
Reaching a sound for a word
ER: In the Sphinx's riddle, it is defined as "the sound often heard / During the search for a hard-to-find word"
And finally something small
Reminds you of someone tall
MOLE: A mole is a small animal, which can be associated with Hagrid because Hagrid wears a moleskin overcoat.
- There are altogether five
We can see two of them live
There are five of the Cattermoles mentioned in the series, Mary, Reg and their children. The children are only mentioned, the parents actually appear on the pages of DH.
Hint:
Now string them together, and answer me this,
Which of them would you be willing to kiss?
... It's the clues that you need to string together.
A modified version of a part of the Sphinx's riddle indicating the method of finding the solution (the "kiss" is not really important, I only changed the words to make them more suitable for the answer of this ridddle).
Hint 2: The answer is a name.
The name of a family.
Hint 3: The foes mentioned in the first line are women.
Minerva and Umbridge.
Hint 4: The "shared friend" is not a person.
A Patronus.
Hint 5: The connection between "something small" and "someone tall" is especially apparent in cold weather.
Reference to the overcoat.
Guessed: Beds in Harry's dormitory in Gryffindor Tower; Hagrid's pets (Fang, Fluffy, Aragog, Norbert, Buckbeak), people's pets, Luna Lovegood, lunar or moon, wands, feathers or keys, the dragons in the stories, animaguses (animagi).
I look forward to a new Dryleaves-riddle!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks Julia!
I'm afraid you will have to wait for a while for a new riddle, as it's been such a long time since I made one (and read the books ). But I'll try.
On the kiss: I think Ron kisses Mary Cattermole in the movie, but it was the cat that made me think in this direction.
Well, I'd better start thinking of a new riddle, then.

Oh, yes, I did think of Ron and Mary Cattermole when I wrote the first hint, but I forgot it when I wrote the explanation.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Here is a new riddle:
A long time spent in ice and snow
Walking where the footless go
Passing by an ugly mark
And the dangerous thirst in the night so dark
A spell of rest and deadly screams
Run with the one above your dreams
Rats and lice I'll lead away
It's the nasty woman's special day
And then, remember, you must try
At last: the lie about the lie
A long time spent in ice and snow
Walking where the footless go
Passing by an ugly mark
And the dangerous thirst in the night so dark
A spell of rest and deadly screams
Run with the one above your dreams
Rats and lice I'll lead away
It's the nasty woman's special day
And then, remember, you must try
At last: the lie about the lie

Choices, Hagrid's trip to visit the giants is a good guess, but unfortunately not the answer to the riddle. (Lovely avatar, BTW! )
Mona, Dumbledore's death on the tower is also a good guess, but is not the answer, either.
Verity, the Giant Squid is not the answer, but I almost wish it was.
But, alas! The riddle has been solved.

LOL! I thought this riddle would be a shortlived one, but it was really fun to make one again. Thanks again for your guesses!
Congratulations, Julia! Now we're all waiting for your next riddle!

- Spoiler:
- Julia, the answer is indeed the Collected Works of Gilderoy Lockhart.
A long time spent in ice and snow
Year with the Yeti (the Snowman).
Walking where the footless go
Wanderings with Werewolves. I assume they have paws, not feet...
Passing by an ugly mark
Travels with Trolls. Troll is a mark, and trolls are ugly.
And the dangerous thirst in the night so dark
Voyages with Vampires. They are nocturnal creatures and drink blood.
A spell of rest and deadly screams
Break with a Banshee. Banshees have a scream that may kill you.
Run with the one above your dreams
Gadding with Ghouls. Ron has his bedroom under the Ghoul in the attic at the Burrow.
Rats and lice I'll lead away
Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests.
It's the nasty woman's special day
Holidays with Hags.
And then, remember, you must try
At last: the lie about the lie
Magical Me. Lockhart's autobiography. As he has lied about his deeds, you could say that his life is a lie, and in his autobiography he keeps on lying. The word "remember" is meant to make you think of memory and Lockhart's skill for Memory Charms.
LOL! I thought this riddle would be a shortlived one, but it was really fun to make one again. Thanks again for your guesses!
Congratulations, Julia! Now we're all waiting for your next riddle!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Really??? I didn't mean it! The riddle reminded me of Lockhart's books, but I couldn't figure out all the clues (like the "ugly mark", LOL), and I was sure there was a trick somewhere! I really like the riddle with this answer, too; but ... I'm sorry I can't start a new riddle now. In a few days, we are going away for a ten-day trip, and I won't be able to visit the Forum regularly (if at all).

If it's Ok, I'll give it a try. This came to me in the middle of the night, so don't judge too harshly and don't guess it too quickly.
Now that I'm leaving, what do you say?
Up, up and away, you'll see me no more today.
Once again, what do you say?
Let the guessing begin.......
