A Sneaking Suspicion
"Gilderoy, you have a visitor," said Professor Flitwick, after escorting a portly wizard in navy blue robes to the office. Professor Lockhart looked up from the letter he was reading and said, "Why hello there Filius, my dear friend! I see you have met Mr Slinkhard, the esteemed Under-Secretary of the Dark Force Defence League. Wilbert, what a pleasant surprise to see you here!"
Professor Lockhart stood and warmly shook hands with his guest, who was gazing at Gilderoy with awe.
Professor Flitwick hurriedly closed the door behind him and trotted off before his 'dear friend' could draw him into yet another discussion about the best way to cast a Shield Charm or a lengthy account of one of his adventures.
As the two wizards sat down on Gilderoy's velvet sofa, and a house-elf served them iced pumpkin juice, Wilbert cleared his throat.
"Well, Gilderoy, I was in Hogsmeade on Saturday, and guess what I saw displayed in the window of Dervish and Banges?"
Gilderoy Lockhart looked politely interested and waited for Wilbert to continue.
"It was a completely new sort of sneakoscope, one that is very similar to the one that the League have recently developed! I could hardly believe my eyes! This is plain theft! How dare they usurp us and steal our invention!" Wilbert finished with an indignant snort and gazed at Gilderoy, with furrowed brow.
"Are you suggesting someone has deliberately taken the League's designs and marketed them for profit?" Gilderoy exclaimed. "Who would do such a thing?"
"That's just the thing," Wilbert explained. "We think it must have been a member of the League because only one of us could have known about the new product. Who had access to the designs?"
"Well that is a good starting point for an investigation," Gilderoy agreed. "I'll help you make a list. Personally, I've never trusted Quentin Trimble. He's an unimaginative author who wouldn't know a Banshee from a hag! We should definitely start with him." He glanced at one of his portraits, which was nodding wisely at the suggestion.
Since Wilbert didn't seem to have noticed the enthusiastic likeness on the wall, Gilderoy stood and pretended to straighten the frame as he continued.
"Another name that might be worth investigating is Eldred Worple. He's a fraud if ever I saw one! Anyone who knows anything about vampires knows that they never greet each other with a secret handshake. They have a different custom, which I describe fully in my book Voyages with Vampires."
Wilbert, who had not read either book, looked slightly bewildered as he replied, "Yes, of course. But the documentation of the sneakoscope was supposed to be classified. Only a handful of people had access to that. What we must do is investigate how the leak occurred. But as an Honorary Member, perhaps you could help in another special way. I wonder if you could use your particular talents in an advertising campaign for the League's new range of products. We need a strong and reliable wizard to be the new face of our sneakoscope campaign."
Gilderoy puffed out his chest and replied with a wide smile. "Naturally, if my celebrity could be of service, I'd be delighted to help. You should never underestimate the power of a winning smile!"
Wilbert gave a grateful nod and took another sip of his pumpkin juice. Then they chatted about Gilderoy's latest 'Most Charming Smile Award' from Witch Weekly for a while before Wilbert announced he had to leave.
A few days later Gilderoy travelled to London to participate in the official photo shoot for the new campaign. He was wearing his favourite lilac robes and his elegant silver hat. He was greeted by a small gang of autograph hunters, and he graciously insisted on signing everything twice.
As he was just about to enter League Headquarters he caught sight of a flustered young wizard in dark robes, who looked strangely familiar.
"Professor Lockhart Sir, I've been trying to contact you all week. I need to talk to you about a certain ... werewolf." He gave an exaggerated wink, which made Gilderoy rather uncomfortable.
"I'm sure I don't know what you mean," said Gilderoy, a flush rising across his face, his forget-me-not blue eyes, and disappearing beneath his wavy golden hair.
The wizard, a dark-haired young man named Fearghal Addlestone, stepped closer and, staring fixedly at Gilderoy, said, "A reputable source told me that your account of the Wagga Wagga werewolf may not be entirely accurate." He paused for effect before continuing.
"As a full member of the League, I consider it my sworn duty to bring light to dark issues, such as those in your books. Last month I travelled to Australia on a study tour to examine local attitudes towards the Australian Muggles. While I was there, I came across certain information that..."
Gilderoy had stopped listening. He reached into his robes discreetly, keeping his expression as calm as was possible. Then, with his wand pointing at the young wizard's head through the lilac fabric, he slyly, quietly murmured a spell.
"Obliviate!"
A strangely blank look appeared on Fearghal Addlestone's face, quickly replaced by a quizzical expression as though he was trying to remember something. At last he cleared his throat and spoke.
"Hello, nice to meet you. Could you tell me what I'm doing here?”
Gilderoy was about to answer when a church bell started ringing, the door behind them opened and a cheerful voice called out, "Gilderoy! Fearghal! Why don't you come inside and we can get started at last!"
Wilbert was standing in the doorway, holding a strange object in his hand.
"What do you have there?" Gilderoy asked, heading towards the smiling wizard.
"This is the latest thing in Dark detectors,” Wilbert explained. "Fearghal can tell you about it. He brought us this clever little gadget back from Australia!"
He looked at his young friend, who furrowed his brows in concentration.
"Very well," shouted Gilderoy, "but let's not keep the photographer waiting!"
With that, he briskly strode across the threshold and Wilbert followed him, while Fearghal did so more hesitantly. Inside the building, the three wizards gathered around a small table on which there was a large collection of sneakoscopes. Gilderoy adjusted his robes and smoothed his hair.
"Where do you want to advertise the new products?" he asked, picking up a sneakoscope, which immediately started to spin and hum. He blinked. Wilbert stepped closer to examine the device and Gilderoy hastily put it down, laughing nervously.
"Oh dear, it seems someone's up to no good around here." He glanced across the table where Fearghal was still looking a little confused. Wilbert followed his glance and raised his eyebrows as he saw the young wizard's strange expression.
"Fearghal? Is there something the matter? You seem rather out of sorts."
"What? Oh, it's all right, I'm just trying to remember something. I wonder..."
Fearghal broke off abruptly as Gilderoy loudly announced, "let's get on with the photoshoot, shall we? Where do you want me?"
"Well," Wilbert replied, "that's really up to Fearghal, he's our official photographer."
Gilderoy looked taken aback, but quickly recovered himself and, turning to Fearghal, offered his most winning smile.
"My dearest friend, please tell me what you want."
After some hesitation, Fearghal decided to photograph Gilderoy with a sneakoscope in his hand.
"Just stand over there by the wall and keep smiling! Raise your palm up a bit so that I can place the sneakoscope on it."
An hour later, when the spinning and humming sneakoscope was finally back in its box and Gilderoy's cheeks were aching from constant smiling, the three wizards were satisfied that the photoshoot - the first step in their advertising campaign - had been a success, and they all sat down.
"The League thanks you for your cooperation. I'm sure that our endeavours here today will yield the desired results and avert the potential disaster the Dark Forces have tried to foist upon us," Wilbert said solemnly. "Now that our sneakoscopes have the endorsement of such an outstanding personage as the famous Gilderoy Lockhart, trusted by everyone and admired for his daring deeds of Dark defence, we can rest assured that evil will be held at bay. Although few people can appreciate the important work we do, we will carry on as long as Dark Forces continue to be a threat.”
The silence that greeted the end of this speech was broken only by the persistent humming of the League's brand new sneakoscope in its box. Fearghal cast a long, bewildered look between Gilderoy and Wilbert and said dreamily, "I wonder why that thing's still spinning?”
Gilderoy rose, smiling.
"Why don't we all go and celebrate this successful photoshoot at the Leaky Cauldron with a drop of Ogden's Firewhisky? You two can buy the first round!” Gilderoy gestured towards the door and ushered Wilbert and Fearghal out of the room. Then as Gilderoy followed, the sneakoscope spun around humming for the last time, finally falling silent, coming to a complete standstill.

Sorry about the spacing on the story. This new formatting will take some getting used to. Let's see how the table function works.
That's the most contributors we've had on a story in a while! Even if some of them only contributed the odd post here and there, it's still nice to see a few more names.
Since we agreed to take turns with the story-starting, I think it would be good if PAH or Mona started the next story. However, if they haven't popped in to start the next story in the next day or so, then Julia, you should go ahead and start a new one.

Post-Story Comments
We deviated a little from our original brief but I really enjoyed this story. It's fun and light-hearted. We may not have fully exploited all the possibilities, but I liked how we explored some of Lockhart's professional jealousy and Wilbert was also fun to write. Maybe we'll see him back in a future story. As always, I think there are places where the story could use a little more description but that's fairly typical for a five words story. Overall, I think it's an entertaining story with a clear plot.
What does everyone else think?

Dear Harry,
I hope you
Great job posting the story, Verity. I will post comments later... need to get ready for school now. I also saw your email about your upcoming trip and will respond to that soon.
I thought we could write a short piece, since there are just over 60 posts left in this thread, and it would be easier for me to keep track of and post a short piece now, as I have loads of stuff to get done before the school year ends. I hope that's okay.
I thought, to keep things light and easy, a letter from Hermione to Harry the summer after Year 1 might be fun. (Hence my choice of story pic.) These would be one of the letters that Dobby kept from Harry in CoS. I will pop in more often for this story... promise!

Hi PAH! It's great to see you starting the new story!
It's a good idea to do a letter. That should keep the length nice and manageable. I hope we do see a bit more of you.
It was my last day today! A few days to relax (kind of), get organised and then we fly out on Tuesday.

(I can't work out these paragraph breaks with this new formatting. If I put a space between paragraphs as I normally would, when I post it, there is a double space between paragraphs, and then when I go back to edit it there are two spaces and I need to delete one. But if I don't put a line space in, then there is no space between paragraphs when I post. Grrr!)

Thanks, Verity.
When I posted the other day, I thought the change in how we format was due to the browser I was using or something. But I see it's a change forumotion made, and I must say, I don't see the point. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." The previous formatting worked just fine. Alas, earwax!
YAY, Verity on your last day! I am quite jealous!
My summer plans have changed, so instead of going to India to take care of some family business (my brother will be going instead), I am free from August 5th to about the 23rd to go on a proper holiday. So I have been messaging folks I have met in the various Pottermore Facebook groups I belong to and am going to try to get to a meet-up in London which involves a visit to Leavesden! I hope everything falls into place so this trip actually happens. It will be really interesting to meet folks I met in the Common Room and Dueling Hall, and have chatted with for a while, in person. The wonders of social network sites.
And now back to my spelling assessments!
