I had no idea what Snape hurried out of (he had already left the Great Hall and was going upstairs, thinking about Quirrell all the time), so I invented a secret shortcut - I'm not sure if that's what you thought of, Verity!

shortcut between the first-floor
Well, to be honest, I had forgotten that he had already exited the Hall, but I was also thinking that he would have to use some kind of shortcut to get to where he was going so quickly, so the sentence works fine.

DADA corridor and the Charms
... corridor or classroom
The door to the forbidden corridor is at the end of the Charms corridor on the third floor. Since there is a Charms corridor (with the Charms classroom), I suppose there can be a DADA corridor as well (for the DADA classroom and the DADA teacher's office).
Perhaps first floor in your post could be a hyphenated word now, in which case you could use six words next time!

Charms corridor seemed deserted, but
Now I wonder who gets to Fluffy first. Has Quirrell had time to go past Fluffy and get through the trap door, so that Severus will have to follow him there, too? Or will Severus catch him right behind the door to the forbidden corridor? I think Quirrell is probably ahead of Severus, because if Severus gets there first, there is no need for either of them to actually go to the forbidden corridor, as Snape could catch Quirrell at the entrance, but we know that Fluffy gets involved in the episode.

Severus held his wand at
the ready...
Now we have to be fairly ambiguous in how we write this scene. We know that at this point Quirrell doesn't know how to get past Fluffy, and Snape can't have more than a vague suspicion otherwise he would surely go to Dumbledore. The confrontation between Quirrell and Snape has to be such that each could accuse the other of trying to steal the stone, while at the same time insisting that their own motives were only to check on the safety of the stone.

- Spoiler:
- Snape gets injured by Fluffy, but Quirrell, as far we know, does not. So perhaps Quirrell had got as far as unlocking the door but then hid when he heard Snape's footsteps approaching. Snape finds the door unlocked and proceeds, gets injured, retreats and comes face to face with Quirrell in the corridor. That might work.

I like this sequence of events, Verity. Now what was Quirrell going to do with Fluffy if he didn't know how to get past him? Did he think he could kill him? Bringing the troll into the castle and so on with the risk of getting blocked at the trap door would not be a wise thing to do, so he may have had some plan (even if it didn't work). So perhaps he tried to kill Fluffy, so no wonder Fluffy was angry... or perhaps he somehow set Fluffy on Snape.
Snape did not go to Dumbledore probably because he thought Dumbledore was needed elsewhere (someone had to deal with the troll) and he thought he was perfectly able to handle Quirrell (especially with Fluffy being there  ).

the doorknob. The door creaked
On the one hand, the incident has to be ambiguous enough to explain why Quirrell is able to stay at Hogwarts for the rest of the year, though I think it is only a surface explanation. Dumbledore probably suspects that Quirrell may not want the Stone simply for himself. In this case, he may find it wiser to keep Quirrell in the castle and watch him - they don't know that it means Voldemort is in the castle, too. On the other hand, Snape's role in the incident has to be quite clear and rather important from Voldemort's viewpoint since in HBP Bellatrix accuses Snape of stopping the Dark Lord from procuring the Stone, and Snape cannot deny that he did everything in his power to thwart Quirrell (not knowing that he was working for Voldemort).

It's true that Snape did everything in his power to thwart Quirrell, but that was over the course of the year, and at this point, it must still be early in the suspicion stage.

The suspicion must be pretty strong if Snape thinks watching Quirrell is more important than looking for the troll. I agree that Snape watched Quirrell over the course of the whole year, but Quirrell seems to be quite angry about this particular incident even when he talks about it to Harry.

- Spoiler:
- Another possible scenario: Quirrell may be inside trying to charm Fluffy into sleep or kill him. Perhaps Fluffy is just about to attack when Snape enters, so Quirrell runs past Snape and out of the corridor when Snape's attention is focused on Fluffy. Then Quirrell may claim he has never been inside.
Then again, perhaps Quirrell can't get through the door so easily either. If Quirrell gets out immediately Snape arrives or doesn't enter the forbidden corridor at all, he can run away without Snape noticing him while Snape is fighting Fluffy. But we know they arrive at the "troll bathroom" together so even though Quirrell is not injured, he probably does not have a chance to run away - or if he does, then Snape, limping, with a severely injured leg, has to run very fast to catch up with him. It may be possible, too - then we'll have to write the chase scene. Â

I like the scenario that Quirrell is already inside, trying in vain to calm Fluffy. Otherwise, the reader won't technically know that Quirrell had been attempting to steal the stone. It will also set up a more convincing confrontation between Snape and Quirrell, than if they only see each other in the corridor.

- With this he probably draws attention to himself as well. Just to include some dialogue in the story, Snape and Quirrell might perhaps exchange a few words while Fluffy is a bit woozy from Quirrell's curse. The dog attack could put an end to the argument any time.
