What Will be the Biggest secret to be revealed in Deathly Hallows? (3/24/07-4/14/07)

Edited by Kip Carter May 21, 2007 4:30 am

What is the biggest secret you think will be revealed in Deathly Hallows?

A - What James and Lily did for a living
B - The significance of the Love Room at the DoM
C - What part Neville has in the prophecy
D - Is Snape evil or good and why
E - Who will do magic "late in life"
F - What we will discover about Petunia and Lily's parents
G - Why the "slow sad song about a dying wizard named Odo" was crucial
H - What really happened at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents were killed
I - Something we haven't even thought of yet

(Suggested by painting sheila, with a suggested answer by Luna Logic)

This poll will be closed sometime 8pm (server time) on April 14, 2007.

Definitely D, but there are some other really good choices in that list.

EDIT: w00t! I've never gotten the first post before!

D intrigues me most currently. But H is at least as important, if not more so. Whatever secrets are revealed about Godricks Hollow might pertain to Snape's alliegence. And I really like G.

Wow, how to choose! I choose H.

geauxtigers - Mar 24, 2007 10:32 pm (#3 of 53)

Hmmm its a tie between B, D, and H!! So which to choose? If there was a J: A Combination of a Few things, that's what I'd vote for! The one thing that has been eating away at me for nearly 2 years now is Snape. Hmmm perhaps I'll go with B? But I aslo really want to know whats up with the love room and what really happened the night Lily and James died. Okay I changed my mind, I'm going with H because if you think about it, everything that the story is based on started with that night. Everything. And we know very little about it. ALl we know is that Vold killed James, proceeded to Harry, but Lily made the ultimate sacrifice for her son, and then Vold's AK rebounded. Yeah definatly H. Thats going to reveal a lot of reasons for some of the other voting choices, I think!

Do you mean which of the above will be a BIGGER surprise? Because hope all of these questions will be answered in DH. And I don't know, but they are all so big. If I had to pick, the only choice I would venture is we may NEVER know if Snape is good or evil. (that's why I love Sirius,he was a simple man, no ambiguities, he was one one side only now and forever)

Hmmm D, H, or F. I think H is probably the most important because so much stems from it. The events that happened that night are what have shaped the entire series. It could help answer so many questions in one shot. Is Snape good or evil, is Harry a horcrux, ect. The possibilities are endless. The things that happened at GH are probably the most significant events in the whole series. That will absolutely be the biggest secret IMO, So H

I'll go with H because JKR has so carefully written and omitted about that Godric's Hollow scene - like a classical tragedy- events, place, time, characters (who was there), and even objects (Gryffondor's relic?). All the major elements of the plot seems to be linked to that night (IMO).

Hmmmm, I'm between:

H - What really happened at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents were killed and I - Something we haven't even thought of yet

I'll go with ***H*** for now, reason being...as it has been said...so many things were affected by that night. It's going to be quite interesting to finally hear the backstory. And Jo being the great writer she is, I can also see it being "I" too....no telling what she will pull out from her magic witch's hat to surprise us with.

One thing I'm really looking for to finding out is the answer to & that is why did DD have James' cloak!

Later, Deb

It's the choices we make, hmm, let's see...

I'll say B, as we know nothing about it, and we must have seen it for a reason.

But what about the "gleam in DD's eye"? We haven't figured out that yet, either.

JKR said that within her 10-15 versions of the first chapter of PS/SS can be found pretty much the whole story. I presume by that she means the basis for which everything has happened. So it has to be...

H

However, I have a strong suspicions that D -- Snape's loyalties and the reasons DD trusted him -- are closely related to what really happened at Godric's Hollow.

For me it will be the biggest secret, as contrasted to the most interesting information or the most telling of information.

I vote D, because I think Snape is a bad guy, but there are some clues and such that kind of make him a good guy.

Mrs Brisbee - Mar 26, 2007 5:20 am (#26 of 53)

H for me. What happened at Godrics Hollow? How did Dumbledore and the Wizarding World know? What object did Voldemort bring for his intended Horcrux, and what happened to it? Why and how was a connection forged between Voldy and Harry via the rebounding AK, and what is the connection's exact nature? What time did Hagrid pick up Harry, and where did they go afterwards? There are a lot of answers lurking in that night's events!

mona amon - Mar 26, 2007 8:27 am (#27 of 53)

For me the biggest secret revealed in DH will be why Snape made that Unbreakable Vow, but since that isn't included as an option, I choose H, for all the compelling reasons stated by Mrs Brisbee above.

I

I think the biggest secret to be revealed will be that someone Harry trusts will be under the imperious curse without his knowledge until the near to the end. There will be a mole (or a stinking rat other than Pettigrew).

Anna L. Black - Mar 26, 2007 1:43 pm (#29 of 53)

I’m torn between D - Is Snape evil or good and why and H - What really happened at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents were killed.

But I think that we have a lot more information about Snape, and either outcome is possible and won't surprise us (the circumstances surrounding it surely will, but not the outcome itself). With H, on the other hand, there's so much deliberately-hidden mystery, that I believe it will be the biggest secret revealed. So, H. (And I agree with DJ Evans, what's with DD and the cloak??)

freshwater - Mar 26, 2007 1:46 pm (#30 of 53)

Of course I am hoping that all those secrets will be revealed. But the biggest.....has to be H: what really happened that night in Godric's Hollow. It is the key to the entire series, yet the one thing which no one --not even Dumbledore-- really understands.

TomProffitt - Mar 26, 2007 2:22 pm (#31 of 53)

Right now I'm most interested in "D" about Snape's loyalties, but it could well be "I" something new. If Jo pops a big enough surprise it could change everything, but if we have "ho hum" kind of answers you never know.

I guess what I'm saying is that if in DH everyone treats Snape as evil and we never learn anything to contradict that and the book treats it as though DD's murder made everything obvious and we were just looking for JFK in area 51 or something ... yada yada yada.

Um, I'll try again.

Right now I'm assuming that there are unanswered questions about DD's death. It could be that Jo intended for Snape's murder of DD to be the obvious and blatant answer to Snape's loyalties, so that the answer "D" is already revealed and I was just looking for an answer I already had.

There are a lot of questions we think we need answered that we probably don't and there are probably a few that we don't know we should be asking (thus answer "I"), but I'm sticking with "D," as it's the one I must want to have answer I'm satisfied with.

aggieamy - Mar 26, 2007 7:39 pm (#32 of 53)

It has to be "I". At some point in the book I'm going to put it down and say OH MY GOSH. Then I will pick it up and continue reading but I know that sometime during it there will be something resolved that will just totally floor me and that I will not be suspecting at all and it will be great.

I mean really, who would have suspected that the reason Voldemort couldn't die was because he tore his soul into seven pieces and imbedded them into sacred object. Wow. Didn't see that one coming. Cool.

Madam Pince - Mar 26, 2007 8:34 pm (#33 of 53)

All interesting mysteries, but I am (as most people) torn between answering D - Is Snape evil or good and why, and H - What really happened at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents were killed as being the two biggest secrets. In my mind, they are indelibly linked since one of my major theories about the whole series has Snape's loyalty described against the backdrop of Godric's Hollow, so....

Hum... I suppose I will vote D - Snape good or evil? because it's really technically more of a "secret" (as Nicholas explained earlier) rather than a "mystery" like Godric's Hollow. Nit-picky, but I don't know how else to answer this question, and that's how it seems to me...

Madam Pince: In my mind, they are indelibly linked since one of my major theories about the whole series has Snape's loyalty described against the backdrop of Godric's Hollow, so....
Was it Snape at GH this night ? I see that you didn't renounce! We will be some like you to hope, all the Book 7's reading long, about this missing link which has for the moment resisted or escaped to our inquiries...
(I have voted H, but with the secret hope it would resolve D also.)

Definately, H – What really happened at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents were killed.

As is who (if anyone) was there other than Voldemort, why James's cloak was with Dumbledore, and where were James and Lily laid to rest. These all will be answered with what really happened at Godric's Hollow. Harry is sure to question Hagrid, Peter, and anyone else that may have witnessed at least some of the events.

That is what I hope will be answered.

Okay, I just reviewed the votes so far and it seem remarkable that D and H are the the answers we most seek in ... DH (Deathly Hallows). Who wrote this question? Did you purposefully chose letters D and H for these two questions? LOL Okay, I know 12 is a recurring number in the Harry Potter series, can we now add the letters D and H to our mystical collection?

**tottles off muttering to himself, "Dumbledore is a 'DD', Hogs Head that's an 'HH' are these twice as important?" etc.**

freshwater - Mar 30, 2007 5:18 pm (#43 of 53)

Love your insights, JB! When you mentioned 12 being a significant # in HP lore, were you aware that D is the 4th letter in the alphabet, and H is the 8th....add them together and you have 12. Spooky, eh?

And, just to get really wacky, HH would = 16, and 1 + 6 = 7! Woohoo!

Also, if DD and the Hogs Head are twice as important....DD = 8 and HH = 16, together they make 24, times 2 = 48, and 4 + 8 = 12. OK, now I'm getting a bit scared.

**skipping off to St. Mungo's for a dreamless sleep potion to knock me out until July 21**

Well, I was certain I'd say H as I saw the question and read through the posts. But it struck me that that might not be the biggest secret revealed, and so, to go against the crowd and into a part of the series which I've never really gone into before (i.e. I don't know/haven't heard a lot of theories on it), I'll say B – after all, the driving force of the saga is love.

Hmmm... My gut feeling is that we already know what happened at Godric's Hollow: Peter ratted them out, Lily jumped in front of Harry, there was a flash of green light, the structural integrity of what was to have been the final horcrux faltered, and Harry was left scarred and orphaned. Learning a few more details will only show why DD trusted Snape, but we've really known all along that Snape is trustworthy. So the big secret isn't "what happened?" The big secret is "How will Voldemort be defeated?" How will the events of Godric's Hollow be avenged? I am sure I want to know I: How will the vanquishing take place?
C'mon! Aren't you even a little curious?

I agree with many of you and have to say H. As far as D, that's obviously one of the major questions. I'm 99% sure of the first part of the answer. I'm really in suspense about how exactly Rowling will incorporate it into the plot. And the real "reveal" here will be why Dumbledore trusted Snape (and we've heard a partial answer already). So the most crucial part of D may go back to H anyway.

I also like I since a new twist never hurts, and I'm expecting to see at least one. I know DH is supposedly the second part of HBP, but what's an HP book without some major twists? And, as others have said, there are a few options not listed. The meaning of the gleam in Dumbledore's eye is a big one, for those of us who haven't figured it out yet. And the other options people have listed under I are biggies, too.

I'm interested in all the others, but particularly B & C.

G? Is this a statement JKR made earlier and I missed? I definitely picked the wrong 3 -4 months to go MIA from all things Harry Potter. The Odo song has always bothered me. (The two partial prophecies from OotP had too and I suspected they'd come back, just not in the form they did!)

And I agree with Finn that the biggest secret might be B, which goes toward How Will Harry Defeat Voldemort which leads back to I.

Anyway, I'm voting for H with I as an unofficial second choice.

I can't wait to find out all of them!

Okay, poll's closed. I'll get back with the results as soon as I can.

Results: 48 votes; the most voted for answer was 'H' and is listed in red.

Question: What is the biggest secret you think will be revealed in Deathly Hallows?

   A - 0 of 48; 0.0% - What James and Lily did for a living
B - 3 of 48; 6.3% - The significance of the Love Room at the DoM
   C - 0 of 48; 0.0% - What part Neville has in the prophecy
   D - 9 of 48; 18.8% - Is Snape evil or good and why
   E - 0 of 48; 0.0% - Who will do magic "late in life"
   F - 0 of 48; 0.0% - What we will discover about Petunia and Lily's parents
G - 0 of 48; 0.0% - Why the "slow sad song about a dying wizard named Odo" was crucial
   H - 28 of 48; 58.3% - What really happened at Godric's Hollow the night Harry's parents were killed
   I - 8 of 48; 16.7% - Something we haven't even thought of yet
