I have to admit I came by yesterday but didn't post because I was a bit confused. Dolly had left the room and bumped into Ron in the corridor, so I wasn't sure which door she was walking towards or why she'd be addressing Griselda. In the end I went with Mona's suggestion. Maybe we need to explain that she was calling through the open door or something.
Great title PAH!

Dunno what should happen next, so left out the endquote, in case someone wanted to have Dolly say something else? Are we ending the story with dialogue or narrative?
Oh dear, in my stalling efforts, we ended up going down a random and unexplained doorway. So I'm changing my previous post from: and walking towards the door, to: and calling out behind her,
So now the sentence reads: "Well," she said, taking out her wand and calling out behind her, "you see, Griselda, it's time someone took a firm hand and dealt with things properly.
Thanks, Mona and Verity. I just thought, keep it simple, so thought about the O.W.L.s, and how they were exams —> examinations, Griselda and Dolores' chat and ... voila! Cross Examinations!

I think a couple of narrative posts, just to show them marching off down the corridor, should do it. Thanks for making the change, PAH, it does read better now.
You have a real gift with dreaming up titles, PAH. I wish I had it!

Potty Five Words: "Cross Examinations"
Griselda Marchbanks riffled through the exam papers, shaking her head now and then, and chuckling once or twice, when she came across a particularly humorous answer to a question. For example, for the question about Wizard-Muggle relations in the early sixteenth century, during the North Berwick Witch Trials:
The Muggles of North Berwick were mostly miserable, because of the cloudy days and cold weather. So they lit fires and burnt witches to keep warm. Therefore, Wizard-Muggle relations were heated.
Curiously, Griselda glanced at the name on the top of the page.Goyle, Gregory... The surname rang a bell. She vaguely remembered another Goyle, who used to give similar answers. The pumpkin doesn't roll far from the patch, she thought, and continued reading.
Many hands make lite work, as they neded lots of Muggles to make a fire. Muggles aren't as good as wizards at anything and they should be kept in there place.
Oh dear, Griselda mused, it's clear that Gregory Goyle has no idea of Wizard-Muggle relations, and only the vaguest idea of how to write. She picked up her quill, dipped it in red ink and quickly wrote, Absolutely incorrect.
Maybe I'm getting too old for this. Hmmm... Granger, Hermione... perhaps this witch has more of her wits about her than this dolt of a wizard.
Griselda flicked ahead to different question.
Explain the reasons why the International Confederation of Wizards was formed.
Pierre Bonaccord, the first Supreme Mugwump of the Confederation, had vision of a time when all the wizards of the world would be united for the benefit of the whole wizarding world, so he founded the International Confederation of Wizards. Because the wizarding world's main concern was the ever-growing tension between themselves and Muggles, the Confederation's first piece of legislation was to draft the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy in 1692. ...
Lovely, Griselda thought. A student who clearly knows her material. Marking this exam will be just a formality. If this isn't Outstanding, I don't know what is. I've seen a lot of exam papers in my time, and this is clearly one of the better ones. It reminds me of Albus. His O.W.L. exams were exemplary, already showing signs of genius.
With a sigh, Griselda put down her quill.
Who could even suggest that Albus, of all people, was a threat to the Ministry or that he was losing his grip on reality? The very idea is outrageous! Albus would never be tempted by power. He is the best Headmaster Hogwarts has ever had. Resigning from the Wizengamot may not have been an easy decision, but I had to make it clear where I stood. Now, of course, the Daily Prophet thinks that the whole thing is hokum, and... well... She shook her head, turned back to the pile and continued reading.
Suddenly the door opened and Griselda looked up, annoyed. She hated interruptions when she was working.
"Hem, hem," said Professor Dolores Umbridge with a simpering smile. A velvet black bow sat atop her head like a fly perched on a fluffy pink toad.
"Yes, Dolores?" said Griselda with forced politeness. "Did you wish to speak to me? I am rather busy you know."
"Oh Griselda, I hate to interrupt, but I was wondering how you were getting along with the exams. We've implemented a few changes, as you might have noticed—"
"Hmmm... yes, I've noticed. I'm not sure I understand why. Dumbledore seems to have managed perfectly well without them."
"Times are changing, and the Ministry feels there is much to improve at Hogwarts."
"Hmmph! I've been an examiner here for more than a century, and there's a lot I could tell you, but I've never seen a jumped-up Ministry official trying to run the school before."
Dolores coughed, then said, "Griselda, these are extenuating circumstances. Dumbledore has exposed the students here to dangerous and subversive ideas. Just look at the way that Potter boy tried to destabilise the Ministry with these fanciful stories of He Who Must Not Be Named returning."
"But he is back. Dumbledore believes Potter, and that's good enough for me," stated Griselda quietly, fixing Dolores with a steely gaze. Dolores blinked and instinctively took a step back but quickly recovered her composure.
"This attitude only goes to show that the Daily Prophet was right," she replied. "Your judgment has been impaired since you began associating with goblins. It's no wonder the Wizengamot was happy to get rid of you."
"My dear woman," Griselda said icily, "if that's the best you can do..." She picked up an exam paper and turned away, making it clear that the Headmistress had outstayed her welcome.
Dolores hesitated for a moment, then walked out the door. She bumped straight into Ron Weasley, who, strangely enough, did not back away but seemed almost as if he were looking for someone.
"Er, Professor," he said solemnly, "...there's a problem in the Transfiguration Department. Peeves is going crazy, smashing everything to pieces. I have tried telling him to stop, but it's no good." He trailed off uncomfortably as Dolores scrutinized him intently, an unreadable expression on her face.
"Well," she said, taking out her wand and calling out behind her, "you see, Griselda, it's time someone took a firm hand and dealt with things properly." And gripping Ron firmly by the arm, she briskly marched him away down the corridor like a predator its prey.

Story #149
Hi Five Worders! I will not be able to post the finished story and stats for Story #148 until this weekend, so I have set aside some posts for this material so that Story #149 can get started sooner rather than later.
Verity passed on her story-starting rights to Julia. Looking forward to the first five words of the next story. I wonder, will I need to find a picture of for the next story's avatar?

Thanks again for the opportunity to start a story!
LOL, PAH, I love -stories and -avatars, but how about looking for a picture of this time? I'm thinking of a story of little being expelled from Hogwarts but eventually getting a job as gamekeeper. So... starting in medias res:
With a crack, Rubeus's wand

Great idea for a story, Julia.
So, Hagrid was in his third year when he was expelled, wasn't he? And Professor Dippet would have been headmaster then. That's what my memory is telling me, but I could be wrong.

Where are we? At Hogwarts, at the Ministry? Who is pronouncing Hagrid guilty? I'm curious to find it out.
PAH, that's a very cute picture!
I think an 'and' is missing from the last sentence.

...Ministry official?
I was thinking this was at Hogwarts, but now that you mention it, I do think that there would be a Ministry official there to do the actual snapping. The warning letter Harry got in fifth year said that Ministry officials would be calling shortly to confiscate his wand, but given the incident that precipitated this took place at Hogwarts, I think it's reasonable that the Ministry official would come there.
