Aragog lived.At that moment,
Dumbledore was a professor here then, and wasn't he head of Gryffindor? He'd have likely come to talk to Hagrid, I think, after hearing the news of his expulsion. Introducing another character will also help to add some more dialogue to this story.

Just my idea, of course.
I don't know if Dumbledore was Head of Gryffindor at this time... He may have been.

- Hm... if Dumbledore comforts Hagrid at this moment, Hagrid may not feel it necessary to run away into the Forest, and the story might end soon without any real drama. Perhaps Dumbledore wants to talk to Hagrid, but misses him (Hagrid runs away first) so that Hagrid can spend some time in the Forest, and Dumbledore can look for him. Dumbledore may be delayed because he may want to speak to Professor Dippet about Hagrid .. or he may be delayed by Tom Riddle ... I don't know.
I agree that some dialogue would be nice. An alternative possibility (if it's not Dumbledore) at this point could be the Gryffindor prefect who may want to urge Hagrid to leave.
Just my idea, of course.

- I agree, we definitely want Dumbledore in this story, but maybe not just yet. So perhaps this is just one of Hagrid's fellow third years, who comes in, sees Hagrid still there and leaves again awkwardly, which just reinforces to Hagrid that he is really an outcast and no one wants him around. That might spur him on with his plan of running away to the forbidden forest, where Dumbledore can find him later in the story.
