Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 Empty Riddle #494

Post  Potteraholic Wed Sep 21, 2011 9:39 am

Verity, I wasn't sure if Skiving Snackboxes was part of your guess or not, so included them, just to be on the safe side! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2222139670

I thought for sure the second verse would reveal all... it's so funny how, when you know the answer, everything seems so clear. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 266347159

Beware!
I'm charming.
I'm sweet.
I'll knock you off your feet!

Wait!
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Or you shan't be able
to say anything at all!

Hint 1: The first guess is the closest.
Hint 2: The 2nd verse.

Guessed: Fainting Fancies, U-No-Poo, Madam Rosmerta's oak-matured mead, Puking Pastilles, Skiving Snackboxes, Nosebleed Nougat

I'm sorry about the delay - here is a new riddle at last. Please, come and guess! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 3651937787

Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.

Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.

Thanks, Choices, for starting the riddle off with the first guess! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 It's a great guess, and I can see how most of the clues would fit, but the Bloody Baron is not the answer.

Interesting riddle, Julia. It does sound like a particularly lovely description of a ghost, especially the first verse, but the last line has me stumped. I'll just continue the ghostly line of guessing though.

Is it Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore?

Thanks, Verity! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 The answer is not Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore. About the last line: Perhaps the best approach is to take it fairly literally. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 464751818

Great new avatar, Choices! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 The answer to the riddle is not Hogwarts itself, but the direction is quite good. (You have solved the "Castle" part.) Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 464751818

Thanks about the avatar. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 OK, the castle part is Hogwarts, but I think it would be too easy to assume that the "Prince" part refers to Snape. confused JKR said in an interview that Harry made sure that a portrait of Snape was hung in the headmaster's office and I thought maybe the riddle referred to that, but it's not in the book. I am at a loss, but I'm still working on it. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2281877974

Excellent reasoning, Choices! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 858139975 That's the way to go! Keep guessing. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 3651937787

The answer is not Snape's portrait in the Headmaster's office, but there is reference to it (or to the lack of it) in the riddle. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 464751818

Neither solid, nor liquid

Guessed: the Bloody Baron, Sir Cadogan, Nearly Headless Nick, Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore, Hogwarts itself, Snape's portrait that is not in the Headmaster's office.

Choices, the memories are a very good guess Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 464751818 , in fact I almost expected that someone would think of them. You have done a great job throughout the guessing!

The answer, however, has been found by Verity: It is indeed
Spoiler:
I thought it deserved a riddle. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 Congratulations, Verity! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2942856553

The riddle:

Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.

Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.

The explanation:

Spoiler:

Well done, Verity! I look forward to your riddle!

Oh dear, now I have to think of a riddle! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 3906177977

Julia, that riddle was just perfect. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508 It sounded beautiful, and I was sure when I read it that the first verse referred to a ghost. It sounded like such a lovely ghostly description. However, when the Snape-shaped hole came to me, the whole of the riddle suddenly made sense, just the way it should when you know the answer. You are truly the riddle master! or mistress! Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 2752390508

Ghosts are defined in HP as "imprints", and I think the Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 858139975-shaped hole can also be defined as a sort of "imprint", so they have something in common. Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II) - Page 18 464751818
