Riddle #494
Verity, I wasn't sure if Skiving Snackboxes was part of your guess or not, so included them, just to be on the safe side!
I thought for sure the second verse would reveal all... it's so funny how, when you know the answer, everything seems so clear.
Beware!
I'm charming.
I'm sweet.
I'll knock you off your feet!
Wait!
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Or you shan't be able
to say anything at all!
Hint 1: The first guess is the closest.
Hint 2: The 2nd verse.
Guessed: Fainting Fancies, U-No-Poo, Madam Rosmerta's oak-matured mead, Puking Pastilles, Skiving Snackboxes, Nosebleed Nougat

Julia, you have guessed the right answer!
Beware!
I'm charming.
I'm sweet.
I'll knock you off your feet!
Wait!
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Or you shan't be able
to say anything at all!
Hint 1: The first guess is the closest.
Hint 2: The 2nd verse.
* answers below *
The riddle baton now goes to you, Julia.
Beware!
I'm charming.
I'm sweet.
I'll knock you off your feet!
Wait!
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Or you shan't be able
to say anything at all!
Hint 1: The first guess is the closest.
Hint 2: The 2nd verse.
* answers below *
- Spoiler:
- The answer is indeed Ton-Tongue Toffee! I'm not sure an explanation is needed, but here it goes:
Beware!
I'm charming.
I'm sweet.
I'll knock you off your feet!
Ton-Tongue Toffees are charmed sweets that make one's tongue "swell up to ten times its normal size". I figured that would knock someone off their feet!
Wait!
Don't say I didn't warn you.
Or you shan't be able
to say anything at all!
If your tongue is that swollen, it's going to be hard to talk. Exhibit A: Dudley Dursley.
Hint 1: The first guess is the closest. Verity guessed Fainting Fancies, a similarly charmed WWW sweet
Hint 2: The 2nd verse. - explained above
Guessed: Fainting Fancies, U-No-Poo, Madam Rosmerta's oak-matured mead, Puking Pastilles, Skiving Snackboxes, Nosebleed Nougat
The riddle baton now goes to you, Julia.

Thanks, PAH! That was a lovely riddle!
I have an idea for an answer to a new riddle, only I need to write the riddle yet.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I'm sorry about the delay - here is a new riddle at last. Please, come and guess!
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.
Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.

I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks, Choices, for starting the riddle off with the first guess! It's a great guess, and I can see how most of the clues would fit, but the Bloody Baron is not the answer.
Keep guessing, please.

Thanks for the new guess, Choices! The last line ... yes, that's a key sentence. The answer is not Nearly Headless Nick, but keep guessing, please. You are not far from the right track.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Interesting riddle, Julia. It does sound like a particularly lovely description of a ghost, especially the first verse, but the last line has me stumped. I'll just continue the ghostly line of guessing though.
Is it Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore?

Thanks, Verity! The answer is not Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore. About the last line: Perhaps the best approach is to take it fairly literally.

Great new avatar, Choices! The answer to the riddle is not Hogwarts itself, but the direction is quite good. (You have solved the "Castle" part.)

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks about the avatar. OK, the castle part is Hogwarts, but I think it would be too easy to assume that the "Prince" part refers to Snape. JKR said in an interview that Harry made sure that a portrait of Snape was hung in the headmaster's office and I thought maybe the riddle referred to that, but it's not in the book. I am at a loss, but I'm still working on it.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Excellent reasoning, Choices! That's the way to go! Keep guessing.
The answer is not Snape's portrait in the Headmaster's office, but there is reference to it (or to the lack of it) in the riddle.

OK, now I am grasping at straws, but could it be Snape's memories that he leaves at the time of his death?

Or could it be the Snape-shaped hole that was left in the window after Snape leapt through it?

Choices, the memories are a very good guess , in fact I almost expected that someone would think of them. You have done a great job throughout the guessing!
The answer, however, has been found by Verity: It is indeed
The riddle:
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.
Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.
The explanation:
Well done, Verity! I look forward to your riddle!
The answer, however, has been found by Verity: It is indeed
- Spoiler:
- the Snape-shaped hole that was left in the window after Snape leapt through it.
The riddle:
Neither solid, nor liquid
On departure left behind
Of high and dramatic birth
You can't touch me – never mind.
Neither canvas, nor colour
I bet he did not even wince
You can see me and beyond
I am the Castle and the Prince.
The explanation:
- Spoiler:
- Neither solid, nor liquid
A hole has no substance.
On departure left behind
When leaves the castle for the last time...
Of high and dramatic birth
'High' refers to the location of the window: one of the upper floors of Hogwarts, only two floors below Ravenclaw Tower. 'Dramatic' refers to 's duel against the four Heads of the Houses and his dramatic escape through the window.
You can't touch me – never mind.
You can't exactly touch a hole (only its edges or the air through it).
Neither canvas, nor colour
On the pages of the book at least, there is no mention of a magical portrait appearing after 's death - it seems the -shaped hole is the only representation he gets.
I bet he did not even wince
probably used magic as he went through the window, so (hopefully) the glass did not give him reason to "wince".
You can see me and beyond
You may not be able to touch a hole, but you can certainly see it, and you can also see through it.
I am the Castle and the Prince.
The -shaped hole is physically part of Hogwarts Castle (or one of its windows), and it is also a representation of Severus Snape, the Half-Blood Prince.
Guessed: the Bloody Baron, Sir Cadogan, Nearly Headless Nick, Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore, Hogwarts itself, Snape's portrait that is not in the Headmaster's office, Snape's memories that he leaves at the time of his death.
Well done, Verity! I look forward to your riddle!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Oh dear, now I have to think of a riddle!
Julia, that riddle was just perfect. It sounded beautiful, and I was sure when I read it that the first verse referred to a ghost. It sounded like such a lovely ghostly description. However, when the Snape-shaped hole came to me, the whole of the riddle suddenly made sense, just the way it should when you know the answer. You are truly the riddle master! or mistress!

Oh, thanks, Verity!
Ghosts are defined in HP as "imprints", and I think the -shaped hole can also be defined as a sort of "imprint", so they have something in common.
