Archive of HP Related Trivia Quizzes
This is a work-in-progress. As it is an archive, and not a discussion thread, it will be a locked topic.
A huge THANK YOU to Mona for archiving these quizzes and their answers to transfer them over from World Crossing to our new home here on forumotion. As much as I wanted this archive to make it over here, intact, from our previous home, I didn't have the time to do the actual copying and pasting myself with the other threads I was archiving at the time. When these quizzes and their answers were safely archived somewhere, thanks to Mona's efforts, I didn't need to feel so anxious about not having enough time to get to them, before World Crossing closed on April 15, 2011. So now, they are all formatted and reposted here. These archives would not be possible without your help, Mona!
I thought, for archiving purposes, it would be good to save the header post of this thread, originally posted by:

Hi. I love trivia and Harry Potter and wanted to create a thread similar to the Logic Puzzle thread. I will post, every so often, trivia questions derived from Harry Potter. There are a few rules that I will request that people will follow.
1. Please use "invisible" writing when posting answers.
2. No Cheating. That means I hope that you don't go and look up the answers. It is supposed to be off the cuff.
3. Feel free to post any trivia that has not been posted previously.
4. Have Fun.
Here is the first one.
JKR uses Latin roots in many of her spells. She also uses Latin in her naming of characters. Approximately what percent of the English Language has Latin roots (prefixes and suffixes as well)?

When you'd like to celebrate a good result on a quiz, or try to forget about a not-so-good one, have a virtual ice cream treat! This was something that was started on the old forum, in Volume II. I'm not quite sure how this tradition started, but it evolved over time and became 'PAH's Parfaits'. Click on the graphic to see a scrumptious selection!

This topic serves as an archives of the riddles played on the 'Potty Games: HP Related Trivia Quizzes' thread from the Harry Potter Lexicon Forum as hosted on World Crossing which ceased operation on April 15, 2011. This Archive of Trivia Quizzes was reposted from March 27, 2011 to May 1, 2011. None of the original emoticons, font styles, or colors were archived. Any emoticons that appear are those that converted easily to BBCode, like : ) or ; ) to create or . Hopefully, the absence of the original emoticons does not affect a reader's enjoyment of the quizzes. ~ Potteraholic, May 1, 2011

NOTE: The first 12 quizzes and their answers were originally posted as two separate posts, but upon discovering the spoiler box option available in forumotion, I decided to combine the 2 separate posts into one. That is why so many edits were made in the first 12 quizzes.

Madam Pince - Jul 2, 2006 9:18 pm (#1506 of 2932)
Edited Jul 2, 2006 10:31 pm
All right, finally ready. Sorry I took so long -- this making up questions is harder than it sounds! Here we go -- all questions worth one point unless otherwise noted.
1. What color are Ginny's eyes?
2. How many E's did Harry get on his OWLS?
3. What is Bellatrix's husband's name?
4. What two food rations did Uncle Vernon bring along to the island when they were avoiding the owls in PS/SS? (1/2 point each)
5. What was Hagrid swinging from his hand at breakfast before he taught his first CoMC lesson?
6. What's the name of the cat Mrs. Figg set to watch over Harry at the beginning of OotP?
7. Who is the referee at the Quidditch World Cup?
8. What is the date of the diary day that Tom Riddle takes Harry "back into" to see Myrtle's death and Hagrid/Aragog? (Month and day)
9. What logic does Hermione use to decide that Durmstrang must be located in the north?
10. When Hermione smelled the amortentia, of what two things did she say it reminded her? (1/2 point each)
Good luck!

This is unbelievable -- I count a four-way tie for first place! I was sure that with ten questions and two of them 1/2 point each that we'd never get a tie! Yet I have counted and re-counted and that is still what I get! Answers are as follows:
1. Ginny's eyes are brown. (So many guessed blue!)
2. Harry got 5 E's on his OWLS.
3. Bellatrix is Mrs. Rodolphus LeStrange. (I was lenient on spelling - hey, if I'd been playing I'd have said Rabastan.)
4. Uncle Vernon's rations were a bag of chips/crisps and a banana each.
5. Hagrid was absentmindedly swinging a dead polecat at breakfast before his first CoMC class. (Only 1/2 point to Regan due to others mentioned too.)
6. Mrs. Figg set her cat Mr. Tibbles to watch over Harry. (1/2 point for "Tibbles" or "Mr. T-something")
7. The referee at the Quidditch World Cup was Hassan Mostafa. (Full point if you got half of name plus that he was Egyptian)
8. The "memory diary day" was June 13th. (I gave 1/2 point if you got June.)
9. Hermione noticed that the Durmstrang students wore fur capes, so she guessed that the school was in the north. (I was looking for the operative word "fur" - I was less picky on the "capes" part...)
10. When Hermione smelled amortentia, she thought of new parchment and freshly cut grass, and something else embarrassing which she stopped short of telling us!
If you want the tie-breaker, here it is: The London-side entrance to The Leaky Cauldron has a muggle shop on either side of its front door. What type of shops are they? 1/2 point each.
Edit: P.S. This is a pain to score....

If no one minds, I quite like this 10 question idea, so I'll stick to it!
1. What spell reverses the effect of the Sonorus charm?
2. What was the name of Hepzibah Smith's house elf?
3. How many people did the Quidditch World Cup stadium hold?
4. What magical creature is attracted to anything shiny?
5. Which 'C' is an artefact banned in OWL examinations?
6. What was the name of the junior minister to the muggle Prime Minister who impersonated a duck?
7. Who wrote 'Unfogging the Future'?
8. Where is Mimbulus mimbletonia native to?
9. In which county is Malfoy Manor located?
10. What specific crime (that we know about) was Antonin Dolohov sent to Azkaban for? (being a Death Eater or killing/torturing muggles/wizards does not count!)
Enjoy!

I was lax on spelling. I was going to be harsh, but then I decided the questions were difficult enough.
The answers:
1. The opposite of Sonorus is QUIETUS. (quietius was also allowed)
2. Hepzibah Smith's house elf is HOKEY.
3. The stadium fitted 100,000 people.
4. A NIFFLER is attracted to anything shiny.
5. CRIBBING CUFFS are banned in Hogwarts examinations.
6. The junior minister was HERBERT CHORLEY.
7. Unfogging the Future was written by CASSANDRA VABLATSKY.
8. Mimubulus Mimbletonia is native to ASSYRIA.
9. Malfoy Manor is in WILTSHIRE (same county as Stonehenge for anyone interested, Edinburgh and Manchester are cities).
10. Antonin Dolohov specifically MURDERED THE PREWETTS (I allowed spelling of 'Prewitt', naturally he's probably murdered much more than that, we just know of this crime).

The answers:
1. Destination, Determination, and Deliberation. No one, unless I've miss-read, got the order correct, I thought maybe the Lex was wrong, but its the same in the book so...
2. Brockdale Bridge (gave credit if you just said bridge), murders of Emmeline Vance and Amelia Bones, (murders worked, even if you only gave one name) and the Hurricane a.k.a. the Giants.
3. Railview Hotel
4. Romainia
5. Gringotts
6. Protean Charm
7. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington (Ginny there is not III after it so I took off 1/2 pts)
8. Born from a chicken's egg, hatched beneath a toad (Finn, I didn't know roosters could lay eggs! lol I still gave it to you!)
9. McGonagall telling her she failed everything. (its not what Ron said, a piece of paper that only got a 9/10, this is what she saw in the DADA final in PoA)
10. 665

I gave an extra half mark to the best answer about Gilderoy Lockhart's greatest achievement to date. Here's the rest of the answers-
Q1: Gilderoy Lockhart's favourite colour is indeed lilac
Q2: Fleur Delacour asked for the Bouillabaisse
Q3: Percy was absorbed in Prefects who gained Power
Q4: Mr Ollivander conjured a fountain of wine from Harry's wand in the weighing of the wands
Q5: Travers the Death Eater helped murder, as only Finn remembered, the McKinnons
Q6: Percy wouldn't recognise a joke if it danced naked in front of him wearing Dobby's tea cozy
Q7: Gilderoy Lockhart has won Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award 5 times
Q8: At the zoo Harry was bought a cheap lemon ice lolly/popsicle/ice block
Q9: Hagrid bought, as only Jewel and Finn remembered, 12 Hippogriffs to the first Care of Magical Creatures Class
Q10: For Christmas in OotP, Ron bought Hermione perfume for Christmas, which smelled quite unusual.
And for the bonus question, I couldn't go past Amilia Smith's answer of joined-up writing for which she receives 1/2 a mark.

Question 3: many of you said Hannah Abbott but also gave another answer, the most popular being Susan Bones. I had to give only .5 points if you got Hannah but put somebody else.
Question 4: all of you got Dumbledore, but only a few got Fudge. Half a point for each right answer.
Question 5: .33 points for each correct element (Friday, 16, October). Many of you came close but weren't quite there!
Question 6: was the toughest to grade. I took off .1 points as noted below if you missed a word, as the answer was so long.
Question 7: like #3, some got Seamus but also gave another answer. I could only give .5 points if you put Seamus and somebody else.
Question 8: 1 point for "Comet," an extra .5 points for 260.
Questions 9 and 10: no notes.

Here are answers to my questions.
Anwser 1. The answer is 3 PS, GoF, and OotP have all included the Sorting Hat song in the text.
Answer 2. 1 Galleon = 17 Sickles, 1 Sickle = 29 Knuts. On question 2 since the question consisted of two parts, if people missed one but got the other portion of the answer I gave half a point.
Answer 3. Marlene McKinnon
Answer 4. Tonks, Dawlish, Proudfoot, and Savage were the aurpors stationed at Hogsmeade, On question 4 each answer was worth 0.25 points so that a person who got all four questions would recieve 1 point.
Answer 5. I accepted either of the following answers:
A. Donaghan Tremlett, the Bassist
B. The Bassist without inclusion of the name
Answer 6. She stated that in the event of a conflict between Charms Club and Quidditch, Charms Club would take precedence over Quidditch Practices. Note on this question I gave Madam Pince full credit because she got the general gist of the question
Answer 7. He invented the entrail expelling curse.
Answer 8. I gave full credit either of the following answers or variations on them:
A. He was a famous wizard for whom, a ward was named at Saint Mungo's. This ward houses patients with permanent or long-term spell damage. Gilderoy Lockhart, Broderick Bode and the Longbottoms are residents.
B. In 1973, Janus Thickey left a note on the bedside table for his wife, claiming that he had been killed by a Lethifold Janus was shortly thereafter discovered five miles away, living with the landlady of the Green Dragon which resulted in a long term stay at Saint Mungo's because, a ward was named for him. This ward houses patients with permanent or long term spell damage Gilderoy Lockhart, Broderick Bode and the Longbottoms are residents.
C. He was a famous wizard for whom, a ward was named at Saint Mungo's, This ward houses patients with severe spell damage Gilderoy Lockhart, Broderick Bode and the Longbottoms are residents.
D. He was a famous wizard for whom a ward at Saint Mungo's was also given credit was named.
Note on Answer 8 each of the answers given is equally acceptable because at the time I posted the question Although, I knew that the Janus Thickey ward and its purpose were mentioned in OotP chapter 23. I did not realize that the reason for Janus Thickey being at Saint Mungo's was not included in the text of OotP at time posted the question because I did not have book to check the question against and it was only later when I got mu copy that I had erred in thinking the reason for his tenure at saint Mungo's had been included. I apologize.
Answer 9. A dozen
Answer 10. A cockatrice

1. Ron is well known for paying attention to Hermione. In GoF, how long does it go from Hermione shrinks her teeth till Ron notices, and why does he notice?
The duel leading to Hermione going to the hospital wing to fix her teeth took place a few days after Harry's name came out of the goblet. Ron noticed the day before the Yule Ball, i.e. 1 2/3 months later:
GoF Chapter 23: "You're joking, Weasley!" said Malfoy, behind them. "You're not telling me someone's asked that to the ball? Not the long-molared Mudblood?" ; Harry and Ron both whipped around, but Hermione said loudly, waving to somebody over Malfoy's shoulder, "Hello, Professor Moody!" Malfoy went pale and jumped backward, looking wildly around for Moody, but he was still up at the staff table, finishing his stew. "Twitchy little ferret, aren't you, Malfoy?" said Hermione scathingly, and she, Harry, and Ron went up the marble staircase laughing heartily. "Hermione," said Ron, looking sideways at her, suddenly frowning, "your teeth ..." "What about them?" she said. "Well, they're different. . . I've just noticed. . . ." "Of course they are - did you expect me to keep those fangs Malfoy gave me?"
And apparently he noticed because Draco was taunting her about her having big teeth, when he realized that was no longer true. No one got a score here.
2. Mundungus Fletcher appears in the story for the fist time when he fails his guard duty at the beginning of OotP. But before that he is mentioned a number of times. In what contexts have we heard about Dung before? (He is mentioned three times.)
CoS, chapter 3: "What a night," he mumbled, groping for the teapot as they all sat down around him. "Nine raids. Nine! And old Mundungus Fletcher tried to put a hex on me when I had my back turned ......" Mr. Weasley took a long gulp of tea and sighed.
GoF chapter 10: "Complaining about security at the World Cup," said Percy. "They want compensation for their ruined property. Mundungus Fletcher's put in a claim for a twelve-bedroomed tent with en-suite Jacuzzi, but I've got his number. I know for a fact he was sleeping under a cloak propped on sticks."
In GoF chapter 36, Dumbledore says: "Sirius, I need you to set off at once. You are to alert Remus Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletcher - the old crowd. Lie low at Lupin's for a while; I will contact you there."
3. What did Ron brag about when he met the Veela in the forest at the QWC?
GoF, Chapter 9: "I pull down about a hundred sacks of Galleons a year!" one of them shouted. "I'm a dragon killer for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures." "No, you're not!" yelled his friend. "You're a dishwasher at the Leaky Cauldron. . . . but I'm a vampire hunter, I've killed about ninety so far -" A third young wizard, whose pimples were visible even by the dim, silvery light of the veela, now cut in, "I'm about to become the youngest ever Minister of Magic, I am." Harry snorted with laughter. He recognised the pimply wizard: His name was Stan Shunpike, and he was in fact a conductor on the triple-decker Knight Bus. He turned to tell Ron this, but Ron's face had gone oddly slack, and next second Ron was yelling, "Did I tell you I've invented a broomstick that'll reach Jupiter?"
"Inventing a broomstick" or "a broomstick that will reach the moon" gives half score.
4. What funny sight did make Hermione giggle and pull Harry's finger out of his ear at the QWC?
GoF Chapter 8: He turned to look at her, and she pulled his fingers impatiently out of his ears.
"Look at the referee!" she said, giggling.
Harry looked down at the field. Hassan Mostafa had landed right in front of the dancing veela, and was acting very oddly indeed. He was flexing his muscles and smoothing his moustache excitedly.
"Now, we can't have that!" said Ludo Bagman, though he sounded highly amused. "Somebody slap the referee!"
5. Before the Yule Ball Ron declares one girl completely unacceptable as a date. Who is this girl, why is she unacceptable, and how has the condition that makes her unacceptable come by? (The answer to the third part we do not really know, but a likely explanation can be inferred from the story)
GoF Chapter 22: "Well - you know," said Ron, shrugging. "I'd rather go alone than with - with Eloise Midgen, say."
"Her acne's loads better lately - and she's really nice!"(Hermione said)
"Her nose is off-centre," said Ron.
As to why her nose if off-center: GoF Chapter 13: "An excellent remedy for the more stubborn forms of acne, bubotuber pus. Should stop students resorting to desperate measures to rid themselves of pimples."
"Like poor Eloise Midgen," said Hannah Abbott, a Hufflepuff, in a hushed voice. "She tried to curse hers off."
"Silly girl," said Professor Sprout, shaking her head. "But Madam Pomfrey fixed her nose back on in the end."
6. Who is the head of Huffelpuff house, and how do we know, i.e. what is the first time it is mentioned in the books?
GoF chapter 18
The Hufflepuffs, who were usually on excellent terms with the Gryffindors, had turned remarkably cold toward the whole lot of them. One Herbology lesson was enough to demonstrate this. It was plain that the Hufflepuffs felt that Harry had stolen their champion's glory; a feeling exacerbated, perhaps, by the fact that Hufflepuff House very rarely got any glory, and that Cedric was one of the few who had ever given them any, having beaten Gryffindor once at Quidditch. Ernie Macmillan and Justin Finch-Fletchley, with whom Harry normally got on very well, did not talk to him even though they were repotting Bouncing Bulbs at the same tray - though they did laugh rather unpleasantly when one of the Bouncing Bulbs wriggled free from Harry's grip and smacked him hard in the face. Ron wasn't talking to Harry either. Hermione sat between them, making very forced conversation, but though both answered her normally, they avoided making eye contact with each other. Harry thought even Professor Sprout seemed distant with him - but then, she was Head of Hufflepuff House.
7. I just have to add a movie question: What "organization" is mentioned or shown in both the PS/SS movie and the PoA movie, but only mentioned in the CoS book?
The Headless Hunt. During the start-of-year feast in the PS movie Nearly Headless Nick complains about being rejected by The Headless Hunt. In the PoA movie we see The Headless Hunt smash through a window and ride into the Great Hall. In the CoS move there is no reference to The Headless Hunt at all, even if CoS is the only book where the Headless Hunt appears.

Well those were obviously very easy - or you are all HP fanatics - your choice!!!
answers are:
Bubble head charm
They played the flute that Hagrid had given Harry for Christmas
Ronan, Bane and Firenze
Elphias Doge / Broderick Bode / Hippocrates Smethwyck
a bust with a tiara on its head was placed on the cabinet
Madam Marsh got off at Abergavenny
A map of the campsite for you ..... and here's your change
a mass of cream and sugared violets
SNEAK
under the table in the three broomsticks and the Chrismtas tree was moved to obscure them from view.
Excellently answered (and they were all from the top of my head so I had to check a few to get them right!) for the multi part questions you scored 1 point for all the correct answers and 1/2 a point if you got one or more parts but not all – judge’s decision is final!

Question 1: Who is Davy Gudgeon and what did he do and what was the result of his act?

Answer 2: Professor Tofty
Question 3: Which witch is described as being tiny and stooped, her face so lined it appeared draped in cobwebs and what position does she hold?
Answer 3: Madam (Professor) Griselda Marchbanks, Head of the Wizarding Examining Authority, and formerly a member of the Wizengamot.
Question 4: How many points did Gryffindor and Ravenclaw initially earn in the the aftermath of the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and why?
Answer 4: 300 points, Gryffindor initially earned 250 points at the end of OotP, and Ravenclaw earned 50 points for alerting the world to Voldemort's return. Note 1: I also gave full credit for stating that Snape wanted to deduct points from Gryffindor but there were none to deduct so McGonagall awarded points, and after awarding the 300 points McGonagall deducted 10 points from Gryffindor's total to honor Professor Snape's decision.
Note 2: I gave only partial credit on those answers that gave one of the two aforementioned reasons but, gave the wrong answer on the total number of points initially awarded.
Question 5: What model of broomstick had an Anti Burglar Buzzer included in its design?
Answer 5: The Bluebottle comes equipped with an Anti Burglar Buzzer.
Question 6: Besides Hogsmeade, Gladrags Wizard Wear has branches in what cities?
Answer 6: Gladrags has branches in London, and Paris.
Question 7: Where in London is The Leaky Cauldron located?
Answer 7: The Leaky Cauldron is located on Charing Cross Road in between a Bookshop and record shop.

Answer 8: Number 2 Laburnum Gardens is the home of Sturgis Podmore.
Question 9: Scarab beetles, ginger roots, and armadillo bile are the ingredients necessary to produce which potion?
Answer 9: Scarab beetles, ginger roots, and armadillo bile are the ingredients necessary to produce Wit Sharpening Potion
Question 10: Name three known recipients of the Order of Merlin?
Answer 10: Albus Dumbledore, Cornelius Fudge, Newt Scamander, Peter Pettigrew, Gilderoy Lockhart, Sirius Black's grandfather

Apologies for not replying after four hours. Alas, the forum broke and then it was bedtime.
1. In which village did Slughorn reside when Harry and Dumbledore visit him? - Buddleigh Babberton. I still gave credit for answers with spelling mistakes, but it depended how close you were to the actual spelling.
2. Who wrote The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self Protection? - Quentin Trimble. Same with spelling as #1.
3. What magical creature is the Loch Ness Monster? -A Kelpie.
4. Name two instances where Harry has used the penknife Sirius gave him. - Twice in Umbridge's fire to speak to Sirius, once on the locked door in the Department of Mysteries. If you didn't state to talk to Sirius twice in Umbridge's office, then I was harsh and didn't give full credit.
5. What was on Harry's charms exam at the end of his first year at Hogwarts? - You had to make a pineapple tap-dance across the desk. Partial credit for 'tap-dancing' given.
6. What was Lucius Malfoy hit with during the fight with Arthur Weasley in COS? - An Encyclopedia of Toadstools. Partial credit given for 'book' or 'toadstools'.
7. What were Blast-ended Skrewts a cross-breed of? - Manticores and Fire Crabs
8. What are Albus Dumbledore's middle names (in the right order!)? - Percival Wulfric Brian. Quarter of a point for each right name, full point for the right order.
9. Name two known Legilimens. - Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Lord Voldemort
10. What was Harold Dingle in trouble with Hermione for in OotP? - He tried to sell what he said was powdered dragon claw to help study skills, but which was actually doxy droppings. I gave partial credit for a link to OWLS, and for not remembering doxy droppings but getting most other things.
Thank you to all for participating. See you again!

9. Into what did Barty Crouch Jr. transfigure his father after he killed him? - A bone.

Here are the results!
1. Who is the Junior Minister who was entertaining the public by behaving like a duck? Herbert Chorley (HBP, ch. 1).
2. Where did Tom Riddle buy the diary he later turned into a horcrux? In a variety shop on Vauxhall Road, London (CoS, ch. 13)
3. In what did Harry soak his hand after his detention with Umbridge left his hand bleeding severely? A solution of strained and pickled murtlap tentacles (OoP, ch. 15)
4. What was the name of the apparition point near the Burrow used to travel to the Quidditch World Cup? Stoatshead Hill (GoF, ch. 9) Well, some of you must be able to perform long-distance legilimancy, because I really meant the place where they got the portkey, which is the answer I got from most! I gave credit to everyone on this one as my question was so poorly worded!
5. How many people were at Christmas dinner in PoA? 13, because Professor Trelawney joined the group of 12. (PoA, ch. 11)
6. What three items did Ron and Harry have to help Malfoy with during Potions when Malfoy was faking his arm injury from Buckbeak’s attack? Ron cut up daisy roots, Harry skinned a shrivelfig, and Ron sliced caterpillars. (PoA, ch. 7) (Half credit was given for 1 or 2 correct answers; full credit for all 3!)
7. What did Ginny use as an excuse for keeping people away from Umbridge’s door, allowing Harry and Hermione to break in to her office? Someone had let off Garroting Gas (OoP, ch. 32)
8. What did Sirius send to Harry the morning of the Third Task? A good luck note on a piece of folded parchment with a muddy pawprint on it. (GoF, ch. 31)
9. Name one song sung by Celestina Warbeck in HBP. “A Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love” and “You Charmed the Heart Right Out of Me”(HBP, ch. 16) Credit was given for reasonable close answers, such as “Cauldron of Hot Steaming Love”, etc.
10. What new word did Dudley learn on the day the story begins? “Won’t” (PS/SS, ch. 1) Because two of the three UK members who posted answers gave “SHAN’T” as the answer (and the third used “WON’T”), I gave credit for that as it seems the US version was likely different from the UK one here. I did not give credit for “NO” or, although a very good guess, “MINE”.
Well done, all, despite my bumbling! Now I have another good reason to order to full set in the UK version. Over to you, Julie!
