- ...thanks to a sudden explosion of Dr Filibusters fireworks (or some other commotion) Fred was able to slip past Filch and around the corner ...or something like that ...or something totally different!

Q: How did they [Fred and George] figure out how to work the map?
JKR: Don't you — well. This is how I explained it to myself at the time, and this does sound glib. Don't you think it would be quite a Fred and George-ish thing to say in jest ["I solemnly swear that I am up to no good"], and then see this thing transform?
Q: Yeah.
JKR: Can't you just see them?
Q: But the exact word combination? Is that just a lot of luck, or Felix Felicis..
JKR: Or, the map helped.
Q: Yep, yeah. You can see them sort of answering and joking with each other..
JKR: And the map flickering into life here and there when they got closer and closer, and finally they hit upon the exact right word combination and it just erupts.
Of course we can invent our own scenario if we want.

But they had to figure out to say "Mischief managed" to hide the map, I meant. 
Maybe Lee leaves the common room now, and
go up to the dorm, to try and suss out the mystery of the parchment...

Good research Mona!
Remember how the map interacted with Snape? I would imagine it was a case of trial and error and probably getting some hints from the map's responses along the way. However, we should probably come up with some reason for Lee to leave, since I always got the impression this was secret.
