Is it Professor Quirrell's failed attempt to steal the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringotts Bank?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
The Halloween-related guesses are on the right track, and Choices' interpretation of "trick or treat" is probably in the right direction, too. The answer, however, is neither Sir Cadogan taking guard of the portrait hole after the Fat Lady takes flight, nor Professor Quirrell's failed attempt to steal the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringotts Bank.
Keep guessing, please.

Guessed: Horace Slughorn, Gilderoy Lockhart, Dolores Umbridge, Hagrid trying to enlist the giants' support, the band playing the musical saws at Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party, Severus Snape , the charm Snape did on DD 's cursed hand, Hagrid looking after his half-brother Grawp, Draco Malfoy - or more specifically, his task to kill Dumbledore , the Unbreakable Vow, the troll that Professor Quirrel let into the school at Halloween, Sir Cadogan taking guard of the portrait hole after the Fat Lady takes flight, Professor Quirrell's failed attempt to steal the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringotts Bank.

I admit this is grasping at straws, and really has nothing to do with Halloween, but is it Crabbe and Goyle in their Polyjuiced disguises guarding the Room of Requirement?

Could it be Voldemort's attempt to kill Harry (and killing the Potters instead) on Halloween night?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks for the new guesses to everyone!
Lady Arabella, the answer is not Crabbe and Goyle in their Polyjuiced disguises guarding the Room of Requirement, but some components of this guess are similar to some components of the answer.
Choices, I can see how Voldemort's attempt to kill Harry (and killing the Potters instead) on Halloween night would fit many of the clues, but the answer is related to another Halloween.
Verity, the Basilisk petrifying Mrs Norris is yet another Halloween-trick in the HP-books, but not the one we are looking for.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
OK, I have racked my brains to try and think of another Halloween related guess, and the best I can come up with is this - the age line around the Goblet of Fire. It fits with the bearded hint!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Verity you're almost there! You have certainly got the bearded hint right, and I'm already half-inclined to declare you the winner, but the actual answer is not the age line around the Goblet of Fire, but ... (Think of the first two lines.)
Choices, you're in the right book, too, but the polyjuiced Mad Eye Moody (Barty Crouch, Jr) is not the answer.
I'm adding one more hint. Keep guessing, please.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Julia, following your hints to their logical conclusion then, the answer must be the aging potion that Gred & Forge used to try to trick the age line around the Goblet of Fire. Is that it?

- The answer is indeed the aging potion that Gred & Forge used to try to trick the age line around the Goblet of Fire!
Meant to do the job
For less than a year
The twins tried to use the potion to "bridge" the remaining months until their birthday so the potion was supposed to do the job of those months.

Although the twins did not manage to deceive the age line, thanks to Dumbledore, they sprouted white beards, so seemingly they aged many years instead of the few months. (Of course, they did not really age, hence the question mark.)
Hint: Trick or treat?
Halloween. The "trick" is what the twins tried to do, but also Dumbledore's trick. The treat: becoming a Triwizard champion.
Hint 2: Beware of the bearded one!
Two meanings: a) It is not easy to trick Dumbledore. b) The beards that the studens sprouted marked them as tricksters and rule-breakers.
Hint 3: "Less than a year" is in fact 5 months.
April 1st is the twins' birthday, that's five months from Halloween.
Guessed: Horace Slughorn, Gilderoy Lockhart, Dolores Umbridge, Hagrid trying to enlist the giants' support, the band playing the musical saws at Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday Party, Severus Snape , the charm Snape did on DD 's cursed hand, Hagrid looking after his half-brother Grawp, Draco Malfoy - or more specifically, his task to kill Dumbledore , the Unbreakable Vow, the troll that Professor Quirrel let into the school at Halloween, Sir Cadogan taking guard of the portrait hole after the Fat Lady takes flight, Professor Quirrell's failed attempt to steal the Sorcerer's Stone from Gringotts Bank, Crabbe and Goyle in their Polyjuiced disguises guarding the Room of Requirement, Voldemort's attempt to kill Harry (and killing the Potters instead) on Halloween night, the Basilisk petrifying Mrs Norris, the age line around the Goblet of Fire, the polyjuiced Mad Eye Moody (Barty Crouch, Jr).

Wow, Lady A, you're making me
Much as I would like that award, I don't think I really deserve it! I was pretty clueless until we got the Trick or Treat hint, and then it was a process of elimination of things that happened at Halloween that might fit the clues. Thanks Julia. It was a great riddle.
I planned to have a new riddle up today but I've had a really busy day and have only been able to come up with the first two lines so far. I'll post those anyway - you never know, someone might guess it before I have a chance to add to it.
Edit: OK, I've added another two lines. You can tell by the dreadful rhyme that this was done in a bit of a rush.
I'm there at the end but not at the start.
A little bit fruity but pure of heart.
My predecessor suffered a fractured defeat.
But not at the hands of a Death Eat-er

Ooh guesses! Yay! But no comments on my dreadful rhyme? I thought I'd be dodging a few dungbombs for that.
It's not Horace Slughorn, azi and it's not Luna Lovegood either, Puck. But I guess both of those characters could be described as a little fruity!
Julia, it's not Draco's wand, but this guess is definitely heading in the right direction.

- Spoiler:
- indeed Neville's second wand.
That was a pretty short-lived one, wasn't it? Here's the explanation:
I'm there at the end but not at the start.
Neville gets a new wand between books 5 and 6, so this particular wand was not there when the story starts, but is there when it finishes.
A little bit fruity but pure of heart.
Neville's wand was cherry with a unicorn hair core.
My predecessor suffered a fractured defeat.
Neville's first wand was broken in the battle at the Ministry, along with his nose, hence the choice of the word 'fractured.'
But not at the hands of a Death Eat-er.
A bit of a trick here. A Death Eater was responsible for breaking Neville's wand, but he broke it with his foot, not his hand!
Guessed: Horace Slughorn, Luna Lovegood, Draco Malfoy's hawthorn and unicorn hair wand
Take it away Julia!

Thanks, Verity! I really liked your riddle - even the rhyme!
Here is mine:
I was not alone
How could I have known?
Another one's art
Robbed me at the start.
But that stolen name
Today I reclaim
Part of my old dreams
Has come true, it seems.
Enjoy!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I am completely stumped by your riddle, Julia. I've been trying to decipher the clues and work out how art could have stolen something, and why 'today' is italicised. I've no idea, but in the interests of getting the guessing going, is it Stubby Boardman?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
LOL, Verity, I had to look up Stubby Boardman in the Lexicon, so no, he is not the answer. The word "art" is a synonym for 'magic' here (like in Dark Arts), for the sake of the rhyme. The word today is italicised because it has to be interpreted quite ... literally. Does that help?
Keep guessing, please.

Daily Prophet? Doesn't totally fit, but the today part made me think of it. At first it was the only wizarding paper, but then the Quibbler become the more reliable of the two. One would hope the fall of the DE would allow it to print truth once more.
