Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks for the guess Choices, but it's another short lived riddle as Julia has the answer.
It is a doxy!
Black as night
Doxies are black!
Out of sight
Hidden in the folds
They hide in curtains
Four plus four
A doxy has four arms and four legs
Move no more
When sprayed with doxy-cide, they freeze
Poison bought and sold
The twins used doxy venom in their products - which were then bought and sold - yes a bit of poetic licence!
Guessed: Aragog, Borgin and Burke
Congratulations Julia. Over to you!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I'm so sorry Shepherdess and everyone! Thanks for reminding me!
New riddle:
Treasure of well-guarded source
That’s rarely taken by force
Beware when it’s a free gift
To inherit it: Be swift
Raise a goblet or a cup
Don’t let good fortune dry up.
It's too easy, I'm sure, so come and guess it!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Or is it acromantula venom?

Could it be the tears Snape shed as he lay dying, containing his memories?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks for the great guesses, everyone! I really like all of them and one of them is actually the answer! Congratulations, Verity! The answer is indeed acromantula venom.
The explanation:
Treasure of a well-guarded source
That’s rarely taken by force
Beware when it’s a free gift
To inherit it: Be swift
Raise a goblet or a cup
Don’t let good fortune dry up.
Acromantula venom is very expensive but it it very difficult to collect it from a living acromantula. Probably no one wants it as a "free gift", i.e. when an acromantula uses it to poison someone. However, when the acromantula dies, the venom quickly dries up, so you have to be quick to collect some, just like Horace did at Aragog's funeral.
Once again, I'm sorry for making you all wait for such a long time for this short-lived riddle.
Now I look forward to Verity's riddle!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Oh no! I knew I shouldn't have made that guess. I just couldn't help myself!
Anyway, thanks for the congratulations Julia. It was a good riddle. I like the line about having to beware when it's a free gift - that's such an interesting way of looking at it.
I will try to come up with something before too long.

OK, here's a new riddle. I'm sure it won't last long, so get in with your guesses quickly!
First of all I'm too hot to handle
It seems that I'm already burnt
Secondly I'm a little bit nutty
But made a welcome return
Suspicious beginnings
Neat ending

Well, the first thing that popped into my mind is a phoenix on a burning day.

I'm pretty sure this is not the answer, but just to get it out of the way: Is it the Gringotts dragon?

Sorry Choices, it's not baby Norbert. No one's on the right track yet, but keep guessing.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
No, it's not Sirius Black but this guess is kind of heading in the right general direction, in that there is a connection between Sirius Black and the answer.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
The Firebolt? (YES!)
Julia, you have the answer. It is the Firebolt!
First of all I'm too hot to handle
A reference to 'fire' being the first part of the answer. I also like that I got 'handle' in there too!
It seems that I'm already burnt
The Firebolt's body is made of ash
Secondly I'm a little bit nutty
This clue refers to the second part of the answer. What goes with nuts? Bolts of course.
But made a welcome return
Harry was glad to get his Firebolt back after Professor McGonagall had finished examining it
Suspicious beginnings
Hermione was very suspicious of the Firebolt when it arrived
Neat ending
The tail twigs are individually selected and honed to perfection - also regularly trimmed by Harry with his broomstick servicing kit.
Congratulations Julia! Take it away!

I'm beginning to think there are some folks on the forum that are in the wrong profession.......they should be detectives since they are so good at taking clues and solving mysteries! Well done, Julia!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Oooh ... that was a surprise! The concepts of "fire" and handle" as well as "suspicious beginnings" made me think of the Firebolt, but I really couldn't solve all the clues. Now, of course, everything is clear. A very clever riddle ... I really like it!
Thanks for the congratulations, Verity and Choices! I'll try to dream about a new riddle tonight.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Here is the new riddle. I'm afraid it will be too easy for you again. So ... who will guess the answer first?
Meant to protect – oh, but failed
When my secret was unveiled
But the trouble was contained
And at my post I remained.
Although I was friend to none
Though some harm was also done
Though I had none to protect
I was held in great respect.
Yet, in vain I’m strong as steel
I have my Achilles heel
When my old betrayer came
An accomplice I became.
