I agree with Verity - I think we are stumped. I come here every day and read the riddle, but nothing clicks in my mind. One set of four lines will make me think of something, but then another set of four dispells that thought. However, I will venture another guess.....Is it Hagrid's friend, Aragog?

Now Julia was very sneaky there and didn't let on whether 'tail' or 'silver' was anywhere remotely on the right track or not. But a patronus is meant to protect, and it is silver - and it might have a tail - but that doesn't really help either! Especially with the new hint.

The new hint also made me think of Mad Eye Moody, but then I thought about the clues in the riddle itself and wondered if it might be Barty Crouch Jr disguised as Mad Eye?

This time I won't be sneaky and I will tell you that neither silver nor tails have anything to do with the first hint. You need a completely different line of thinking to interpret that hint correctly. (The second hint, on the other hand, is quite straightforward.) It could also be a good idea to try a different set of guesses to find the answer to the riddle.
