Thanks Lady A, but it is not the Grey Lady. I think both Hagrid and the Grey Lady would be considered magical beings.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Hmmm . . .the only rhyme that comes to mind for "beastie" is "feasty/feastie." Is it some kind of food? (Except food can't be conjured, can it . . . )

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I pretty much discounted food straightaway when I read that second line. I guess it could be some kind of animal - for instance it seemed like Crookshanks would have enjoyed eating Scabbers, but the clues don't seem to fit Scabbers.
Is there anything else that Crookshanks wanted to eat?
What about the garden gnomes in the Weasley garden?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
But do Crookshanks, Scabbers, and the gnomes count as magical? It's the "I'm not magic" line that is completely stumping me. (Well, stumping me the most - the rest of the puzzle is doing quite a good job of stumping me as well. )
Choices, when you posted the riddle, you started off with "I'm rather bad at riddles . . ." Ha! I'd say you were rather good!! This is a puzzler!

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Thanks for the guesses. Alas, it is not the garden gnomes at the Weasley's, but Lady A is right on target with her rhyme. You are correct that food cannot be conjured, but we could see something that is "food" be conjured for a different purpose. Hmmmmmmm........?

Hm... Wild guess: Is it the wine Slughorn and Hagrid drink after Aragog's burial? (Harry refills the wine bottles with magic.)

Hm ... it sounds like something a magical creature would like to eat but is not normally regarded as food. Stone? Metal? Paper? No idea what it could be.

Whoa Julia, the first part of your comment is spot on, not the last part though. We may not think of it as food, but the magical creature does. Now, just tell me what it is and you're the winner.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
OK, could it be the rock which one of the champions (Krum I think?) transfigured into a dog to distract the dragon in the first task of the Triwizard Tournament?

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
I am stumped. Some kind of food (but not normally a food) that can be used as both a bribe and a punishment. I have no idea! Maybe it would help us if we identified the 'beastie'.
Choices, can you give us a hint about the identity of the beastie? Is it Crookshanks?

Is the beastie Buckbeak? Doesn't he eat rats? Or does he also eat ferrets? (That would fit in with the "punishment" part.)

Ferrets are not magical, but as we saw in GOF, Mad-Eye Moody conjured Draco Malfoy into a white ferret and bounced him soundly up and down. Moody was told by Prof. McGonagall that transfiguration is never used as a punishment. I must confess that I think the ferret thing where Hermione bribes Buckbeak with dead ferrets to get him to follow them into the woods and to keep him quiet while they waited there, is just from the movie version of POA. However, we do see Buckbeak enjoying a big plate of dead ferrets in chapter 14 of POA. Thus, a ferret's life is tragic and sad as they are killed for food for Buckbeak, who does seem to relish a nice ferret snack.
Thanks for your guesses and congrats to Julia.

Re: Potty Games - Riddles Only (Vol. II)
Here is the new riddle: Enjoy!
Something for her, something for him
In a riddle asked on a whim
You will find out you must go back
From time to time on your own track
It’s getting clearer and clearer
As we are nearer and nearer
A remarkable successor
To a worthy predecessor
The connection, one tried to hide
The other one flatly denied
But I made my contribution
With the key to the solution
Of a riddle sly
Who or what am I?
Something for her, something for him
In a riddle asked on a whim
You will find out you must go back
From time to time on your own track
It’s getting clearer and clearer
As we are nearer and nearer
A remarkable successor
To a worthy predecessor
The connection, one tried to hide
