legolas returns - Sep 27, 2009 7:47 am (#2109 of 2994)
Edited Sep 27, 2009 8:48 am

1. Is it a person? No
2. Is whatever it is magical? Yes
3. Do we see him/her/it at Hogwarts? No we don't see it there but that does not mean that people in Hogwarts don't know about it.
4. Is it some sort of object? No
5. Is it an abstract concept? No. Nothing obscure
6. If not a person or thing, is it a place, then? No
7. Is it a creature of some description? No
8. Is it a simple concept, then, rather than an abstract, obscure one? Not a concept at all.
9. Is it a spell? No. but some magic is involved.
10. Is it a plant? No
11. Is this magical whatsit an event? Yes (think loosely). Each instance you could call a sort of event e.g more than one person takes part. In order for the event to take place there has to be a degree of planning.
12. Do these 'instance[s] you could call a sort of event' happen in all the books? No
13. Is it the Sorting? I know it happens each year, but we do not see it in all books. It’s not the sorting because that happens every year regardless of whether you see it or not. You are correct in assuming that some of the events happen "off camera". There is a full description of one of the instances.
14. Is it an Exam? No. We have a number of exams described.

Perhaps you should look to another angle. There are many questions normally asked that have not been asked. They may point the way.

15. Is Dumbledore somehow involved in these magical 'instance[s] you could call a sort of event'? This is not possible.

As a hint refer to 12 and 15

16. Is this an event in which Harry has participated? He did not actively participate but he was aware and experienced it. Participation and experiencing of the answer are two separate things.
17. Does this event break any wizarding laws? Given the answer to Q18 I would say yes. The law could be broken without the MOM being aware. The MOM would be furious and I am sure that there would be laws against it. [/b]
18. Does this instance/event happen in the last book? Yes
19. Is the event a negative one, from Harry's viewpoint? No, completely the opposite it makes him feel good.
20. Are any Hogwarts faculty involved in this event? Current staff members may have experienced it but they were not directly involved. A former member of staff was involved.
21. Were there Muggle witnesses to this event? No, none were involved.
22. So we see this at the Burrow? We the reader do not read about it at the Burrow but they would have been in full knowledge of the answer to this 20 question quiz. The Weasley family would have experienced it at the Burrow but active participation at the Burrow I assume would have been stopped by Mrs Weasley.
23. Do we see it at the Malfoy mansion? No. Voldemort and his death eaters being there would have prevented it.
24. Was it the wedding of Tonks and Remus? No. Voldemort mentioned the wedding.
25. Do Harry, Ron and Hermione all witness this event in DH? Yes they experience it. They have the same reaction and it lightens the mood.
26. Is the full description given in DH? Yes. There is a nice long passage in the book describing what you are looking for.
27. Is it Kreacher's transformation from angry House-Elf to loyal Harry supporter? No, although that would be a nice 20 question
28. Is it the birth of Teddy Lupin (or the celebration when Lupin brings the news)? No
29. Is it the Potterwatch programme? Yes it is, congratulations Azi.

Looking forward to your 20 question riddle Azi.

Post  Potteraholic Thu Apr 21, 2011 8:27 am

legolas returns - Oct 29, 2009 10:56 am (#2449 of 2994)

1. Is it a place? No
2. Is it magical? Something about it is magical.
4. Is it an animal? No
5. Do we see it in more than one book? No WE don't.
6. Is it a person? No
7. Is it bigger than a penguin? Penguins can vary so much in size. I have seen really small and cute Blue Penguins that are around 30-40cm in height. Emporer penguines can reach up to 1.2m tall. So you would probably be looking for not quite a fully grown Blue Penguin in terms of the length. Other dimensions may vary.
8. Is it particularly ugly? The item was viewed with distate by one group but I could not describe such an item as ugly. To another it would be a wonderful thing so would have a beauty of its own.
9. Do we see it in "real time" in the book(s)? Yes
10. Is it a dark object? Yes but the owner/one who posses it is not necessarily a dark Witch or Wizard.
11. Is it found at 12 Grimmauld Place? No not the location it was originally found in, but it may have passed through Grimmauld Place.
12. Is it found in London? No not the location it was originally found in, but it may have passed through London.
13. Is it seen in one of the last three books? Yes
14. Is it a wand? No
15. Is it a form of furniture? No-too big. See the answer to the Penguin question
16. Does it belong to one of the Malfoys? No but something similar might
17. Do we see it in DH? Yes
18. Is it the hair of Bellatrix that Hermione uses? No, but you have got the correct idea in things changing location
19. Is it the locket that Harry and DD found in the basin in the cave....the one that Regulus had left there after removing the horcrux locket? No. The item never belonged to a Black
20. Is it a Horcrux? No
21. Is it the Vanishing cabinet that Draco repaired? No see Q7 for size
22. Does a DE use it? Hmm how do I answer this? Depends on who you include as part of the death eater group.
23. Does it get destroyed or otherwise neutralized in the story? No but it is used to great effect.
24. Is it something that remains with one character? Yes when we read about it stays with one character but they are not the owner. More than one person has used the object since it was first made.
25. Is it Draco's wand --Hawthorne, I think?-- that Harry "won" the allegience of when he disarmed Draco? Not a wand
26. Is the character this dark object stays with Severus Snape? he never has it, but if he did possess a similar object he would be able to rightly argue to the OOP why he should be allowed to have it.
27. Is this dark object used by LV? It was.
28. Is it a wizard in the form of a little person such as Prof. Flitwick? A pint-sized DE? No, the item is not alive
29. Do we ever see this object at Hogwarts? WE don't see the object at Hogwarts but a passage in the book confirms that it was found in Hogwarts.
30. Is this item something that can be worn on a person? Not an item of clothing.
31. Regarding #24 & 27, is Voldemort the character we see this item with in real time? No
32. Does this item show up in any book besides DH? No [/b]
34. Is this mysterious object found in the first 10 chapters of DH? Yes
35. Was this mysterious object mentioned in Dumbledore's will? No
36. Was this object found in chapters 6-10 of DH? Yes
37. Do we see it in more than one chapter in the book? No
38. Is Harry the character who has this item in real time? No
39. Does this object have the function of finding things out? Yes
40. Is it Secrets of the Darkest Arts? Yes you are correct, congratulations.

On Potterwatch Voldemort was called Chief Deatheater hence my answer to the death eater question. In terms of whether the book was ugly or not I decided that a book could not be ugly. Hermione pulls a face when she gets the book out. I answered two questions on location saying that the book might have passed through a certain area. I am pretty sure that Hermione would have packed the book.

50. Is it the Floo network? Yes! Congratulations, Orion!

Thanks for the questions, HH and Legolas. Orion has already guessed the answer.

PAH, I did worry a bit that not everybody would agree about the category of the Floo Network; but it seemed pretty much like an abstract concept to me (with "material manifestation", as I said, in the form of many fire-places), as the network itself cannot be seen or touched or described by adjectives referring to physical appearance. I find it similar to the Internet or a telephone network. (BTW, the concept of "thing" is more and more mysterious to me...)

Well done, Orion! I look forward to your puzzle!

* NOTE: This question was asked before the answer to Question #1 was changed to Yes.

** Before folks think my answers to either #6 or #9 contradict the answer to #2, which I had difficulty answering without leading people astray, I consider a person to be in the 'is it living?' category, whether s/he is alive or dead, since it was never an inanimate object or abstract concept. Hope that makes sense.

You are evil Potteraholic *huff*. ~ legolas

11. Is it some kind of container? No.
12. Is the adult who uses, or whatever verb fits better than 'owns', this object a Hogwarts staff member? Yes.
13. Is the item in question something that was owned by someone originally and is now in different hands. I was thinking something like Gryffindors sword? Yes, we can say that it was owned by someone originally and now it is in different hands. Not Gryffindor's sword though.
14. Do we see this object in GoF? No.
15. Is the adult in whose hands this object once was a male Hogwarts professor, at one time or other? Yes.
16. Do we see this object in DH? In a broad sense of the word, yes.
17. Is Dumbledore the one who owned?/used?/safeguarded the thing in question? Yes.
18. The Deathstick? No.
19. Is it a book? No.
20. Do we see this object, in a more narrow sense of the word, in any book? No.
21. Did it live in Dumbledore's office? I'm not sure about "live", but it can be assumed that the object spent some (rather short!) time in Dumbledore's office.
22. Is it pretty? I suppose it looks neat, but we get no specific details. "Pretty" is probably not the word to describe it.
23. Do we first 'see' this object, in a broad sense of the word (see), in the first half of DH? No.
24. Did a wizard create this object? Yes.
25. Is it an object that he kept on the table? It is likely that the object was on his desk at one point, but it is not specifically mentioned. I doubt that it was actually "kept" there.
26. Do we first 'see' this object, in a broad sense of the word (see), in chapters 18 to 28 of DH? No.
27. Does it have a metal element? I don't think so.
28. Do we first 'see' this object, in a broad sense of the word (see), in chapters 29 to 33 of DH? Yes.
29. Is it the lost diadem of Helena Ravenclaw? No.
30. Do we first 'see' this object, in a broad sense of the word (see), in and odd-numbered chapter in DH? Yes.
31. Is it Dumbledore's kind reply (i.e. letter) to Petunia Evans' request to be allowed to attend Hogwarts? Yes! The answer is indeed Dumbledore's letter to Petunia! Congratulations!

Thanks for the question, Solitaire (I hope you are feeling better now) but PAH has already guessed the answer.

Some of the questions were difficult to answer (again!) - especially the ones concerning the ownership of the letter. I think it belongs to Petunia, as it was written for her, but perhaps it could be argued that it was Dumbledore's property at first, and anyway, I did not want to block the Dumbledore-related questions by simply saying that the object was not his. I also know that goblins would probably say it was Dumbledore's all along and Petunia only "borrowed" it. But we did not get to Petunia at all.

All in all, well done, PAH! I look forward to your puzzle now!

P.S. I must admit, I had a little chuckle when I answered Q #4, since a foot, covered by a sock, is not really that much bigger than a hand.

LOL, I interpreted "shop-bought" as opposed to "home-made" or "found in nature" but the clarification was a good idea. I look forward to the next game.
